Head of School Review

It has been an exciting week on campus with sports, basketball homecoming, and preparation and practices for our theatre performances I am always amazed at the many day-to-day things that happen on campus. We had gutsy performances Tuesday night from our Boys and Girls Middle School Basketball teams and also a wonderful homecoming ceremony. Check the school calendar for all sporting events.

Thanks to Matt Jones for serving as our Master of Ceremonies, and we apologize to everyone for the sound issue. It turns out that we had a faulty cable on the soundboard. I suspected this as Mrs. Wehrer and I collectively punched every button on the unit to try to fix the issue. Sadly, we did not have a spare cable, but Mr Cousar has fixed the problem for tomorrow evening's Upper School Homecoming activities.

We are excited about the number of inquiries that we are receiving for the 2023-24 school year We have had several student shadows in the past few days, and we are enthusiastic about a very robust admissions season this year. Our student contracts go out on February 1st, and one thing that I would ask is that you get your contracts in as soon as you possibly can We would never want to lose any of our students, but we expect admissions to be very competitive this year with lots of interest from the community. This year (2022-23) we grew by nearly 14%, and we want to thank all of you for not only supporting our school but for telling others about the great things happening at the Academy. As always, thanks for sharing your awesome children with us!

Mrs. Hannah Maddux’s 6th grade math classes have been busy working on one-step equations. But, even in the midst of all that hard work, they managed to find some time to mix in a little fun because, well, math IS fun! Great work, 6th graders!

The underclassman student of the month for December was sophomore, Mr. Owen Peterson. Owen is the son of Heath and Shannon Peterson Owen has been selected to attend the HOBY Leadership Conference, has maintained a 4.0 making the headmaster’s list every year. Owen also earned a 24 on the ACT when he was just in the 7th grade, and more recently scored an 1140 on the PSAT. He is a member of student council, a TRA student ambassador, plays on the varsity tennis team and also tutors younger students after school. One of Owen’s favorite things about TRA is how well the students get along and how many different friendships can be formed.

One TRA staff member said about him, “Owen is a great choice for student of the month because he has shown his excellent character by being dependable, generous, and humble in helping others within the classroom and through peer tutoring He has taken initiative to help those younger students as well as be a good role model for them.” Congratulations, Owen, we are so proud of you

The January underclassman representative for student of the month is also from the sophomore class, Miss McKenna Brigman. McKenna is the daughter of Ronnie and Tina Anne Brigman. McKenna recently joined the TRA student body this school year, and we could not be more pleased to have her with us. What a blessing she has been for our school. McKenna is an honor student, and a member of the National Beta Club. She also plays the piano. Her favorite thing about TRA is the people. A high school teacher had this to say of her, “McKenna is one of the kindest, most caring students I have met. She is friendly to everybody and demonstrates high character She is also extremely academic and works hard in the classroom everyday.” Well done, McKenna, we are so proud of you!!

“My command is this: Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12). Many classes this week have taught the lesson of this scripture verse which, we know, is God’s commandment to us. Our teachers focus on this all year. However, this week’s lessons have centered around Dr Martin Luther King’s message of loving all and treating everyone with fairness and kindness. Our boys and girls have read stories and done many art projects based on this lesson this week. Our PreK-4 students read a biography on Martin Luther King, learned various ways they can be kind to all and made handprints with the message “I can change the world with my own two hands” Kindergarten did one of my favorite yearly activities Each child received a brown egg and a white egg and talked about how they were alike and different. They then broke the eggs open to find that the inside is the same. They learned that, while we may all look different on the outside, our inside is the same, and we are all children of God and should love one another. First grade did a creative writing piece about the difference Dr King made in our world, and they did an awesome directed drawing of him I hope that our boys and girls will remember these activities and grow up to be loving, caring, and respectful of all people.

Our PreK -3 focused on letter “P” this week. It is my favorite letter they do because I had the opportunity to read the book, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, to them. We had so much fun reading together and talking about all the letter P words. After the story, the students made pancakes and enjoyed them lots!

Our boys and girls are BUSY stacking on those AR points, and Mrs. Stacy is keeping up with charting the number of words read. Our total, as of last week, is an AMAZING 14,809, 873!! I am so impressed and proud! Keep up the good work! Remember our Read A Thon started January 17 and will end January 31. This raises money for our library program

Second grade has worked on creative writing and used the cold weather and winter as an opportunity to write about a snowman. They had to name the snowman and write about what their snowman likes to do. These were cute and so fun to read! Writing is one of the hardest things to teach a child to do. Our teachers work on this skill weekly because we know that writing is a huge part of being a successful reader, speaker, and overall student in the grades to come.

I caught Mrs. Samantha’s music class working on rhythm today using the rhythm sticks. This is so fun, and the boys and girls look forward to music every single week! They love being creative and learning new things with Mrs Samantha!

I cannot stress the importance of car line safety! Please put your car in PARK, allow the assistant to open the door, stay off your phone and turn your music down. We have had several recent incidents that could have caused an accident or injury. THANK YOU!!
