EDITOR’S LETTER

CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR L’ALTRA ITALIA CO-FOUNDER

MAURIZIO MAGNIFICO MANAGING DIRECTOR L’ALTRA ITALIA CO-FOUNDER

‘Building cultural events in Canada.’ This is the motto that graces the cover of this year’s program schedule. It is also the focus of the video that introduces L’Altra Italia’s 2013-2014 season: it presents the rotating ‘bricks’ showing evocative stills from upcoming films. L’Altra Italia is a wellspring of projects and ideas. Our growth, measured in terms of membership, events, importance and resonance for our activities, has undoubtedly changed the shape and substance of the cultural association founded in 2002. The basic purpose of our group, which is to create a meeting place, a sort of ‘island’ of Italian culture for our members, will further expand into Toronto’s mainstream. The main objective is to create cultural, artistic and entertainment events tied to the Italian culture that will have a seismic impact in our ‘megacity’ and beyond. The promotion of cinema through the Italian Contemporary Film Festival will continue to play a central role. We will, however, also aim at promoting other initiatives with more fervid dedication: music, poetry, theatre, graphics and visual arts, expositions, as well as welcoming world-renowned figures in the Italian cultural landscape in order to provide an eclectic and multifaceted journey. Additionally, L’Altra Italia is widening its range of action: for the second year, the monthly film revue will be expanded to include screenings at Vaughan’s prestigious Colossus Theatre. In other words, our mission is becoming more ambitious and the courage needed to bring it to fruition is assured by the great enthusiasm we feel emanating from you, our partners and sponsors. Thank you! Costruire eventi culturali a Toronto. Grazie!

ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE

Adriana Frisenna Acting director

Everyone knows who Fellini is. And even if you have never seen any of his movies, Rossellini is a name that rings a bell. Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves is considered one of the 15 most influential movies of all times. Sergio Leone defined Spaghetti Westerns, Dario Argento is a cult deity among the slasher movie lovers, while Sophia Loren’s ageless beauty continues to be renown the world over. We are extremely proud of our heritage, what the Italian genius was able to produce in the then developing world of cinema but it is not necessary to look that far in the past to see Italy’s great accomplishments. The sequence of Roberto Benigni winning his first Oscar is one of the show’s most memorable moment. Gabriele Muccino’s collaboration with Hollywood legend Will Smith produced heartfelt movies, showing the most serious side of the actor. As of 2013, Italian films have won 13 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, the most of any country, as well as 12 Palmes d’Or, the second-most of any country. That is our past which has helped pave an incredible path to a future of new faces, stories, characters. Italian cinema is ready to add new chapters to this ever-growing book of accomplishments. Thanks to L’Altra Italia we get to see it all happen on the big screen here in Toronto. Enjoy the 2013-2014 Season!

ITALIAN TRADE COMMISSION

ASCAL BOVA ICE DIRECTOR, TORONTO

Toronto, October 30, 2013 On behalf of the Italian Trade Commission, I am very pleased to extend warm greetings to our friends at L’Altra Italia, and to everyone attending the cultural and artistic events included in this program. I am delighted that L’Altra Italia has once again chosen an array of cultural activities of the highest quality for the 20132014 season, that will build on the successes of previous editions to stimulate the interest and participation of Italians and Canadians alike. Members will find a renewed commitment to excellence this year, as the Italian Trade Commission will continue to partner with L’Altra Italia to promote “Made in Italy” brands and a particularly distinctive selection of specialty foods and wines. Overall, our partnership aims at strengthening the relationship between Italian producers and Canadian consumers. The former seize the opportunity to showcase their products in the context of distinguished events, while the latter can experience a delightful journey through the regional flavors of Italian cuisine. I would like to commend L’Altra Italia for the cultural and artistic efforts it mobilizes every year and members for their sustained involvement. I wish each and every member an enjoyable and memorable participation in the 2013-2014 activities of L’Altra Italia and continued success.

WE’RE PROUD TO SUPPORT YOU.

NATIONAL CONGRESS OF ITALIAN CANADIANS

MICHAEL A. TIBOLLO PRESIDENT

Toronto, October 21, 2013 Dear Members: Once again, we are at the preface of another spectacular ye ar of film with L’Altra Italia. During the last three years, the National Congress of Italian Canadians and the National Congress of Italian Canadians-Toronto District have been strong supporters of L’Altra Italia and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival. Clearly, our community needs such an organization to provide a unique service. Through film, we are able to understand many of the issues, hopes and dreams of Italians as seen through the eyes and lenses of Italian film directors. Cinema is a reflection of culture and culture is at the base of who we are individually and as a community. We have watched over the last few years how the innovation and vision of Cristiano DeFlorentis and Maurizio Magnifico has brought new experiences to our community. We applaud their efforts and continue to support their vision. They have now expanded through their perseverance to Montreal and Vancouver thereby building bridges between our various communities. I would like to personally thank Cristiano, Maurizio and the dedication of Mara Cataldi and the hundreds of volunteers that work to provide our community with a vibrant form of expression that entertains and stimulates thought. To another successful year of Italian film in Canada. Buon Divertimento!

Buon Divertimento!

ABOUT US L’ Altra Italia was founded in 2002 in Toronto. It is a non profit organization dedicated to highlighting the Italian arts and culture and establishing a two-way cultural interaction between Canada and Italy. Growing from the success of its cinema screenings, the association is now an organization that presents year-round programs. Our initiatives have drawn an outpouring of support from the community, from the Italian institutional organizations and local sponsors. Each year we have grown as a cultural entity and we have initiated more ambitious programs and events. We want to emphasize that L’Altra Italia, although predominantly made up of newly emigrated Italians, is open to all those that have an affinity with Italy and its culture. While enjoying the Canadian lifestyle, our goal is to have the opportunity to find an Italian cultural retreat. The association’s projects, like any other not-for-profit organization, are carried out thanks to the support of its members who have committed their time to volunteer. The Association sees its members as partners who seek new projects, resources and contacts as well as promoters of all its initiatives. In a multicultural and hospitable country such as Canada, where many diverse events occur, L’Altra Italia intends to be a promoter, a catalyst and an amplifier of several events in different sectors: exhibitions, conferences, conventions, seminars, all related to cultural and artistic themes. L’Altra Italia is committed to supporting initiatives such as theatre shows, movie viewings, concerts and any other events or activities that might generate socializing.

We want to thank you for the support and enthusiasm that you will bring to this venture.

A warm welcome to you all!

Vi porgiamo il nostro più caloroso benvenuto!

The Secretary of the main opposition party Enrico Olivieri is in the midst of a crisis. The opinion polls for the upcoming elections show him to be losing. One night after the umpteenth protest Olivieri vanishes leaving a laconic note. Rumors and inferences abound in the institutional and party circles while the grey eminence Andrea Bottini and his wife Anna continue to rack their brains trying to understand the reason why he has disappeared and identify a possible accomplice. It is Anna who mentions the Secretary’s twin brother Giovanni Ernani an ingenious philosopher who suffers from bipolar depression. Andrea decides to meet with him and ends up so fascinated by him that he starts to dream of a plan that has the plot of a dangerous gamble. PRESENTED BY

The film tells the story of a Siberian community, a kind of mafia with strong mystical connections. Here we find the criminals who call themselves “honest criminals.” Among the rules: contempt for money and power in general, the police and the communists; the love of weapons, tattoos, people who have physical or mental disabilities and religion. Besides weapons, these honest criminals spend all their money buying precious icons. All this is told through the stories of two boys, Kolima and Gagarin, who will find themselves behaving opposite to their traditions with the advent of globalization.

On his deathbed, a father asks his son, Andrea, to travel to Kenya for a last farewell. Andrea, twenty-seven, has not seen his father for more than twenty years. Persuaded to go by his girlfriend Livia, Andrea travels to Nairobi. There, among incredible adventures, including the “forced adoption” of a child, Andrea will finally become a man.

An ironic and disenchanted comedy that tells of the subversive power of passion. Nina grew up with strong left political values. An idealist, environmentalist and radical chic, believes in what she does and is convinced that we can all work towards a better world. None more differently is Giulio, heir to the family ‘s industrial empire, wealthy, arrogant and sexist. Indifferent to the thought of a better world. But Nina and Giulio meet by chance, immediately disliking each other. He is exactly the type of man that she’s always despised. She’s the type of woman that he always ignored.World’s apart, different ideals and values, it is for that thin line that exists between love and hate that will reshape their inherent passion. Nina è cresciuta a pane e politica. PRESENTED BY

Princess Letizia lives in the magnificent castle of a small principality together with her father the King, and the Chamberlain Anastasio. The young girl is sad and frustrated: she’s being ignored by both the gossip magazines and her subjects. The King orders the Chamberlain to prepare a plan that will help Letizia give her people something to talk and dream about again. It’s an easy ploy to set up: all she has to do is pretend to fall in love with a poor wretch, Antonio De Biase, an unemployed Neapolitan and professional moocher, create a scandal, and all the magazines will start talking about her. To be accepted at the “upper levels”, he’ll have to follow the lessons in etiquette and good manners imparted by the strict Anastasio. Romantic and comical situations are interwoven into a hilarious comedy rich with surprises and plot twists. PRESENTED BY MONTEMURRO

Gemma leaves Rome to visit Sarajevo with her son, Pietro. Sixteen years earlier, Gemma escaped the war-torn city with Pietro while Diego remained behind. As she uses the visit to repair her difficult relationship with Pietro, she also confronts her past. She first met and fell in love with Diego while visiting Sarajevo as a student in the 1980s. After many upheavals, the two lovers found passionate, if temporary, happiness. They desperately wanted children but Gemma could not conceive. As Sarajevo was being torn apart by the siege of 1992, they found a possible surrogate - Aska, a young and beautiful musician. Gemma pushed her into Diego’s arms, only to be overwhelmed by guilt and jealousy. Now, a revelation awaits Gemma in Sarajevo that will force her to face the full extent of her loss, the true horror of war and the redemptive power of love. PRESENTED BY

The film tells a story of love and deceit, set in Europe in the world of high-end art auctions and antiques. The story revolves around Virgil Oldman, an elderly and esteemed, but somewhat eccentric, managing director of an auction house. Oldman is hired by a reclusive young heiress, Claire Ibbetson, to auction off the large collection of art and antiques left to her by her parents. For some reason, Claire always refuses to be seen in person. An astute young artificer, Robert, then aids Oldman in restoring and reassembling some odd mechanical parts he finds amongst Claire’s belongings, while also giving him advice on how to befriend her, and how to deal with his feelings towards her. Oldman’s poise and prestige is counterpointed by an ongoing scam whereby his friend Billy Whistler helps him to acquire a secret private collection of master paintings. PRESENTED BY

MAY 2014

WHO BENEFITS? The Festival will be open to all the schools of Toronto and the GTA (and outside if requested) from the ages of 8 to 18. We will implement age appropriate programs to make sure the film is relevant not only in terms of content and message but also in terms of communication and perception for the audience. The selection will be guided by Toronto educators in order to ensure that the films will reflect the interests of a variety of age groups.

THE IDEA We think that in a multicultural and multimedia environment such as the city of Toronto, the use of cinematography could help to promote a variety of different learning experiences in media literacy, and Italian language for the students of Toronto and the GTA. By participating in this project, the students will develop their critical and analytical skills. The material include feature films, documentaries, animations and shorts.

HOW? We would like to give the students the opportunity to have a full cultural experience, that isn’t limited to the viewing of the film. Indeed, we will be providing educational tools to the teachers to enrich the learning experience, that will be available directly on the ICFF website. The teachers will be able to accompany the students through the screening by giving them the context prior to the film and back at school there will be resources for follow up activities to go more in depth.

A TAVOLA CON L’ALTRA ITALIA VIAGGIO ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA CUCINA REGIONALE TRA ANTICHI E NUOVI SAPORI

PRESENTED BY

L’Altra Italia Culinary Events

L’Altra Italia Eventi Culinari

Throughout the 2013-2014 season we will embark again on the discovery of Italian regional cultures through food and wine.

L’Altra Italia will host regular culinary events of specific regions where food and wine specialties will be introduced in conjunction with poetry, music, history and folklore. We all know and praise “Italian Cuisine” which is though an abstract concept as “Mediterranean Cuisine” is. In fact, in Italy there are several regional culinary traditions that are influenced by a particular history, culture or environment and that differ from each other because of the many different ingredients and methods of cooking. For this reason we decided to begin our journey to discover Italian regional cuisine. We will enjoy authentic regional dishes and come to understand and better appreciate the local areas where these great traditions originated. We express particular gratitude to the Italian Trade Commission of Toronto, directed by Mr. Ascal Bova, We thank him for continuously supporting us and guiding us throughout this project. The I.C.E. representative will be joined, from time to time, by various experts who will guide us through the culinary traditions of specific regions, helping us better recognize and value their secrets and particularities.

VOLUNTEERS OPPORTUNITIES L’Altra Italia is supported by a vibrant and dedicated community of volunteers. We are always looking for new faces to help out at L’Altra Italia with our various events. Tasks vary, individuals with computer skills and web experience are most welcome!
