As a festival, we are proud to continue innovating ourselves and creating new experiences for our audience. After the darkest times of the pandemic, in which we incepted the Lavazza Drive-In Festival to safely reconnect people and communities, we are finally ecstatic to look forward to this new 2022 edition where everyone can meet and socialize again under the stars without the boundaries and restrictions of a vehicle. ICFF, presented by Lavazza, is thrilled to present a three-week festival in the unique venue of The Distillery Historic District, one of Canada’s most iconic and famous landmarks. This incredible initiative is the result of the work and passion of our organization, The Distillery District and all our sponsors and partners who enable us to always aim bigger and higher. Thanks to them and to our Board, we are able to bring audiences a never-before-seen outdoor experience with theaters created ad hoc for the occasion, with all of the glamour of red carpet appearances, cocktails and prestigious stars in attendance. After spending the past two years physically distanced, coming together once again to share in the viewing of a film in a unique cinema village, while surrounded by the people and cultures that make up our beautiful city, is how we learn and appreciate the cultural mosaic we call home. Thanks to the steadfast support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Embassy, the Italian Consulate General in Toronto and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto, ICFF is proud to present thrilling premieres in Toronto, at the renowned TIFF Bell Lightbox and at the Distillery District, and screenings in Vaughan, Hamilton, Halifax and Montreal, as well as a program online available Canada-wide. Supported by numerous Embassies, Consulates, and cultural organizations, the festival will screen a thoughtfully curated selection of 31 international features, and 67 new Italian films, premieres and shorts.

ICFF will celebrate the best of Italian manufacturing through a night dedicated to the life and legacy of automotive business tycoon, Sergio Marchionne. Through four different remarkable events, ICFF Architettura and Design will celebrate the architectural feats of Italian architects and designers and their influence today from Olivetti to Renzo Piano. As the long awaited return to the cinema has come to an end, ICFF hopes to renew the connections among communities and return to the feeling of the night at the movies. We wish each and every attendee whether on a couch in the Distillery or on a couch in their homes an enjoyable and memorable festival experience. In just a decade, the ICFF has become one of the most important events in Canada for the promotion of Italian arts and culture, with a special dedication to cinema. Film has the magical power to connect us, across societies and borders and to convey important messages and deep emotions, uniting audiences in the power of a shared experience. I am glad to see that this year the Festival is returning to in-person screenings and that several will take place under the stars in some of Toronto’s most pleasant outdoor spaces. The films in the program are firstclass productions and I am sure you will be delighted by them, as they are among the best new titles from major Italian directors. From comedies to dramas to documentaries, you will not want to miss this “assaggio“, this taste, of Italian culture and lifestyle as you enjoy the Canadian summer. The Festival also represents a great opportunity for the industry side of filmmaking, with important business events that further build and strengthen the connections between Canada and Italy in this dynamic sector. Special appreciation goes to the organizers, who have done a wonderful job of bringing to Canada this varied and engaging selection of films, among them the not-to-be-missed “Ennio“ by Giuseppe Tornatore, a loving look at the life and work of the late maestro Ennio Morricone, the Italian icon, whose music has marked the history of contemporary cinema. On this note, I wish you warm summer evenings under the spell of a captivating story, enjoyed once again in the company of fellow film lovers. “Buon cinema“ to all.

Cinema is indisputably one of the forms of elaboration of a cultural vision of an era, in a specific historical moment. Spreading Italian cinema abroad therefore means spreading the cultural subjectivity of our country, its values, and distinctive characteristics. Cinema is a privileged instrument of guidance and understanding of the social and cultural dynamics in an evolving society, such as Italy. There is no better way to discover Italy than through its rich cinema. Storytelling via a cinematographic medium is a formidable and immediate way to portray a country, its people, and its culture. Italy is renowned worldwide for its great ﬁlm directors from Fellini to Antonioni, to Rossellini to name a few. But there is a whole new generation of visionary, contemporary Italian ﬁlm directors that bring their own narrative to the screen to talk about modern-day Italy and the Italian Contemporary Film Festival is a formidable way to discover today’s Italy and its newest or more recent movie releases. THE ARTIST BEHIND THE 2022 ICFF COVER ALESSANDRO GIORGINI This year the festival is presented with an innovative formula. The opening of an open-air cinema village, a return to great events in person and a push towards being social again. Elements that you managed to capture very well in this year’s poster. Can you tell us a bit about it? In my illustrations I like to make different elements coexist, telling complex situations in a sort of “simplified view“ that relates places, people, objects, and abstract elements that are defined by the same lines and shapes. This is what I did with the poster for this year’s Festival edition: the program of events and the extraordinary location were extremely inspiring, allowing me to have many visual stimuli and suggestive contents. The design is created starting from the central element that depicts the extreme synthesis of the festival: two people enjoying a film, sitting in an armchair which in its shape defines the lines of the figure of the colosseum. From there, a universe of other elements “explode“ that tell the story of the Festival in its many facets:

"IN MY ILLUSTRATIONS I LIKE TO MAKE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS COEXIST" there are the iconic shapes of the Distillery District, the marvelous location that will host this edition, there is the atmosphere of the gala event, the reference to the moments dedicated to cooking, to moments of cocktails and coffee (a must for us Italians), there are the sculptures of the open air art exhibit and in the background there are a series of elements that form an “impossible“ skyline that tells Canada, passing from the ocean coasts, to the architectures that recall the big cities, all the way to the natural panoramas of woods and mountain ranges. Finally, a visual quote is hidden, taken from one of the Italian films of recent years that I loved the most, and that was awarded by the Academy. But I will leave it to those who look at the festival poster to find out which one it is. We know you are a movie buff. Among the illustrations of the posters of past films, which one is your favourite and why? The list of my favourite films is quite long, each one is there for different reasons. The one I am most fond us is Ghostbusters, this is because it was the first film I went to watch at the cinema. I still remember the emotion of that Sunday afternoon spent in the small movie theatre of the village I was born and raised in. The magic of the images projected on the big screen that kept us glued to our chair. I rewatch Ghostbusters at least once a year because it reminds me of the moment I fell in love with cinema. We have seen that your illustrations can also become animated images, have you ever thought about making a cartoon or a short film? It has always been a dream of mine and I have approached “animated“ productions several times. I have realized how the production of a cartoon is a very tedious job and that it really involves a lot of effort. Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to be part of an animated production and fulfill this dream.

ALESSANDRO GASSMANN WORTHY OF HIS NAME!

Alessandro Gassmann is one of the most appreciated and soughtafter contemporary Italian actors in the world of cinema — an actor, who owes his success to his great talent and participation in some of the most important films made in recent years. Recently, Alessandro Gassmann was the protagonist in a couple of the best loved Italian fiction series, such as the Bastardi di Pizzofalcone and just lately, in the title role of Il Professore broadcast on Rai television. It was the illustrious Vittorio Gassmann who initially pushed his son to become an actor like himself. “I didn't want to do anything“, says the younger Gassmann, “ I played basketball, … I worked as a bouncer at the Piper…“. Forced by his father however, he found himself at the age of 17 making his debut in 1982 with the film From Father To Son, written and directed and starring Gassmann Sr. In 1985 he appeared in the sequel to “I soliti ignoti“ (“I soliti ignoti, Twenty Years Later“), again with his father, and actors Marcello Mastroianni and Tiberio Murgia. In 1995 he worked in an American production, “A Month at the Lake“ by John Irvin with Uma Thurman. The big break comes in 1997 when the young man finally comes to terms with his desire to act. With Ferzan Ozpetek's directorial debut film, The Turkish Bath - Hamam, thanks to Gassmann’s interpretation of Francesco, an interior

architect who inherits a hamam in Turkey, directors realize that Alessandro, who followed in his father's footsteps, had finally found his way. In 2021, with “The Great Silence“,Alessandro Gassmann returns to directing after four years, and for the first time in his career, he decides to shoot a film that does not feature him as an actor. He does so with a play written by Maurizio De Giovanni, and already performed on the stage, but now adapted for the big screen by Gassmann himself with De Giovanni and with Andrea Ozza. “The Great Silence“ is a perfect blend of cinema and theater. It is, in fact, a theatrical film that emphasizes the importance and use of words and communication. The film amazes for the masterful use of the word. Set in the 1960s, the film sounds very contemporary. “Silence is a bad disease,“ says Bettina, the housekeeper. “Many small silences give life to a great silence“ she says, a theory that she expounds to Mr. Valerio Primic, head of the family, played by Massimiliano Gallo.

The film presented at the 78th Venice Film Festival in 2021, tells a story that focuses on the Primics, a wealthy Neapolitan family: Valerio is a well-known writer of novels, recognized nationally. At present, however, the family is condemned like the house itself, to decay due to economic problems. Rose, the wife, played exquisitely by Margherita Buy, decides to sell the luxurious residence to obviate her debts and shortcomings, clashing with her husband, who would like to stay in that villa, a symbol of the good name of the Primic family. The entire narrative therefore focuses on the memories and confessions of family members, from Rose herself to her children Massimiliano and Adele, who open up for the first time with the protagonist, accused by the housekeeper Bettina of never being able to listen to others. Elegant, ironic and moving, “The Great Silence“ reminds us of a film from the past. Gassmann’s direction works also thanks to the tremendous imagination of its protagonist, Massimiliano Gallo. This is a film ICFF audiences will love and appreciate as it is very reminiscent of the De Filippo style. “The Great Silence“ is a well thought-out film, with a nice twist, sweet and sincere in content and form. And Gassmann proves, as an artist, that he is a “chip off the old block“.

IN CONSTANT MOTION: CLAUDIA GERINI by Tonia Serrao Soppelsa It must be said that Claudia Gerini is one of the best known and prolific actresses on the Italian film scene today. Born in Rome in 1971, Gerini made her film debut at just 17 years of age. Her first appearance on the big screen came with Viaggi di Nozze by Carlo Verdone, and from that moment on she has never looked back. A particular beauty with a keen mind and vivacious personality, Gerini has had a long and varied career that has earned her notable success in Italy and abroad.

Equally at home on the stage as in film, Gerini first appeared when she was 22 years old in the show “Angelo e Beatrice“ by Francesco Apolloni. It was where she was first noticed by Verdone. More recently in 2015, she returned to the stage with the one-woman show “Storie di Claudia,“ written and directed by Giampiero Solari, a musical which highlighted all her skills: dance, singing and acting. In film Claudia Gerini has acted in some of the most interesting projects of contemporary Italian cinema, such as “La Sconosciuta“ by Giuseppe Tornatore, “Non ti muovere“ by Sergio Castellitto, “Una famiglia perfetta“ by Paolo Genovese, “Diverso da chi“ by Umberto Carteni, and many others. Earlier this year, “Mancino Naturale“ arrived in theatres; a film that brings Claudia Gerini back to the big screen as a single mother who dreams of a future in the world of soccer for her son. The film is directed by Salvatore Allocca and also features Massimo Ranieri among its protagonists. Gerini plays Isabella, a single mother who has been

widowed for a few years. She lives a modest existence in a popular neighbourhood of Latina, together with her son Paolo, named by his father in honour of his soccer idol, Paolo Rossi. Even Paolo, like the great soccer player with whom he shares the name, has an incredible left foot, so much so that Isabella is sure that her son will become a professional player. The film is all built around Isabella, brought to perfection by Claudia Gerini. The mother-child relationship is the beating heart of this story, but the film also includes other universal themes, such as family relationships, love, guilt, redemption, passion for sport and economic difficulties. In this role, Claudia Gerini is masterful and it is not surprising that her Isabella remains the best part of the whole film. Everything can be said about Claudia Gerini except that she is not willing to put herself to the test. In fact, the popular actress, a versatile interpreter of many dramas and comedies, and awarded the David di Donatello for her role in “Ammore e Malavita“ in 2018, has gone

behind the camera, directing herself as she runs incessantly on a treadmill (tapis roulant) and conversing with other characters exclusively through a tv monitor. The entire film takes place in one room. In fact, “Tapirulàn“ is an athletic tour de force. The protagonist, embodied by Gerini, is called Emma and is a woman in her forties who lives alone in a spacious loft with large windows overlooking a park, and who spends a lot of time on her supertechnological treadmill, because running makes her stay well and it helps her to think. Emma, who works as a psychological counselor trains while she also works, answering video calls of her numerous patients. Emma has words of reassurance and comfort for everyone; in her own case, however, she hides from the outside world, and obsesses with running. She is in constant motion but does not advance an inch. Like her character in “Tapirulàn“, Gerini too is in constant motions; Unlike her character, Gerini is constantly going places! Her body of work speaks for itself. “Tapirulàn“ will be screened at the 2022 ICFF festival.

ENNIO MORRICONE "HE COULD MAKE AN AVERAGE MOVIE INTO A MUST-SEE, A GOOD MOVIE INTO ART, AND A GREAT MOVIE INTO LEGEND.“ - E WRIGHT, DIRECTOR By Tonia Serrao Soppelsa

Ennio Morricone is himself, the legend. He left us a legacy of compositions that have become timeless masterpieces. From the Italian “spaghetti westerns“ by director Sergio Leone, to his Oscar nominations like “Days of Heaven“, “The Mission“, “The Untouchables“, and “The Hateful Eight“,— for which he won an Oscar— to “Once Upon A Time“ in America and “Cinema Paradiso“, his compositions set a new standard in cinematic musical scores; not simply complementing a film, but overwhelming it. In 2007 he was belatedly awarded an honourary Academy Award. Morricone’s scores added a new dimension to movies. His was not the subtle sound that fills the empty space in a film and guides an audience’s emotional response to the story. Most film composers write music that blends into the scenery or offers tasteful subtlety. Not Morricone. His was an in-your-face and exquisitely crafted music that added layers of perspective and tones and hues to the moving image. His scores were expressive, grandiose, and undeniably audacious. And, what’s more, he successfully adapted his work for many different styles of cinema. “I am disturbed when people think about me as a specialist for Westerns,“ he once said. This association irked him because he was in fact a multifaceted composer who wrote scores for more than 500 films and tv shows for many different cinema genres, not just Westerns. He had a genius for composition: scoring, conducting, and mixing his own soundtracks; and often mixed elements of classical music, jazz, and the avant-garde. Morricone’s work for Sergio Leone’s

spaghetti western films is justly famous, but it is only the tip of an enormous iceberg of musical genius. The composer was born in Rome in 1928 during the fascist era, and wrote his first composition by the time he was six. His father taught him to play several instruments and by the age of 12 Ennio had entered the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia to study trumpet, composition and choral music, enrolling in a four-year program which he completed in six months. Later in life, when he started composing for film, Morricone used his background knowledge of various instruments and his love and fascination for different sounds. He made instrumental choices that were far off the norm, such as the use of pan pipes, for example, in 1989’s Casualties of War and Haitian drumming and a children’s choir in 1977’s Exorcist II. Think of the famous call and response howl of the coyotes in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Sergio Leone famously said in an interview, “I’ve always felt that music is more expressive than dialogue. I’ve always said that my best dialogue and screenwriter is Ennio Morricone.“ Morricone exerted a significant influence also on rock and pop artists. Consider the wonderful and unique trumpets that open “Se Telefonando“ performed majestically by Mina. Metallica, have routinely used “The Ecstasy of Gold“ from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly—as concert warm-up music since the mid-’80s. In film, the directors came calling by the hundreds. Among the most notable were Tarantino, De Palma, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Terrence Malick. Every one of them wanted their film to be resounding with the notes of Ennio Morricone’s music. Hollywood had been particularly keen on bringing Morricone to the States, but Ennio, who after working with

“MUSIC IS AN EXPERIENCE, NOT A SCIENCE” many American directors, and despite his prominent presence in Hollywood, chose to remain in Rome for most of his life. In 2007, a thunderous applause and standing ovation followed Clint Eastwood's presentation of the Oscar to Ennio Morricone. The composer offered a brief “thank you“ in English and then in Italian: “Credo che questo premio sia per me non un punto di arrivo ma un punto di partenza per migliorarmi al servizio del cinema…“ (I believe that this award is not a point of arrival for me but a starting point to improve myself in the service of cinema …) He was 79.

GIUSEPPE TORNATORE “Giuseppe Tornatore is one of the few authentically original voices to emerge in the cinematic world over the past 40 years. He champions community values, solidly grounded in emotional engagement and interaction, over the brash, loud, self-proclaiming egocentricity that has increasingly dominated western societies since the nineteen-eighties .

When we talk about Giuseppe Tornatore, we mean Sicily. This great Italian director has in fact dedicated much of his career to the representation of the island where he was born and raised. Later, he detached himself from his origins, and explored new paths, themes of a profound and broader universality. This could happen precisely because he had been able to fully come to

terms with his Sicilian roots: Cinema Paradiso (1988), Everyone Is Fine (1990), The Star Maker (1995), Malena (2000), Baaria (2009), the documentary The Three-pronged Screen (1995) Tornatore's Sicily, the Sicily of the past, the one that no longer exists, is represented above all in Cinema Paradiso, the film that revealed him, and that immediately qualified him as the director who regained to Italian cinema the prestige and the critical acclaim it had lost in the crisis of the Eighties. Tornatore's cinema is based on emotions, but it does not strike under the belt, it is not “emotional“ in a reductive way. Many of his films explore the feeling of nostalgia, but Tornatore has also shown us that he can describe the complexities of the human intellect, with A Pure Formality (1994), The Best Offer (2013) and The Correspondence (2016).

"EVERYTHING CAN BE FAKED, VIRGIL. JOY, PAIN, HATE... ILLNESS, RECOVERY. EVEN LOVE." Even The Star Maker, although it is a story of deceit, fully belongs to Tornatore's homage to his beloved Sicily; an extremely clear tribute is also found in Malena. The later Baaria (it stands for Bagheria, the small town where he was born and raised) is the film that evokes the loves, the dreams, and the disappointments of an entire community and (for the moment) is Tornatore’s last work on the nostalgia for a bygone time. And his major merit, the secret of how he has succeeded in involving viewers so deeply, lies in reminding us that we are made of heart and brain; conversely, his less nostalgic films have a very strong emotional charge These films expand outside of Sicily, exploring limitless horizons, as Tornatore once again conveys to us his nostalgic vision of the world, as in The Legend of 1900; or presents us with reflections of a breadth that can be defined as cosmic, as in The Correspondence; or works on a script-plot full of mystery and twists, as in A Pure Formality, or -in an even more intricate, sophisticated and fascinating way- in The Best Offer. Both Tornatores, the Sicilian and the international, bear the signs of his authorial imprint, of his unmistakable style. His documentary film Ennio contains, on closer inspection, the same elements: a deep love for cinema, as the art form of his life (and of the life of all of us); but also, a deep sense of love for Ennio Morricone, his closest mentor and collaborator, who accompanied him for all his films starting from Cinema Paradiso. Nostalgia, fond memories, affectionate feelings: all elements that are made harmonious with each other by a deep knowledge of the craft of cinema, never treated with excessive or facile approach.

SERGIO MARCHIONNE Few people can say they saved an automotive icon from the brink of bankruptcy. Fewer can say that they did this all in a matter of 10 years. What Sergio Marchionne did with Fiat Chrysler changed the automotive industry forever. His pragmatic nononsense leadership style made for a businessman that demanded success from those who worked with him, while those closest to him saw a man with a dream for success. At a time when the automotive industry was facing a dreadful recession, many thought that Chrysler would fail, be liquidated and be gone forever. What those people lacked though, was the vision of Marchionne. His master plan to acquire partial ownership and soon full ownership put Marchionne in for the long haul, a challenge he was willing to accept. At the helm of a company in desperation, Marchionne did what all the best leaders do: lead. When Marchionne took over Fiat in 2004, the CEO streamlined communications, addressed leadership problems and improved administration processes. Marchionne’s take-over turned Fiat back into

a reliable and productive enterprise. His leadership tactics and hardball corporate negotiations turned heads in the automotive industry, but his concern was always about what there was to do next. Acquiring Chrysler in an unprecedented business deal, Marchionne rebranded, killing the small car production and promoting and redesigning all Jeep models. His demand for perfection while working extremely long hours led to Fiat Chrysler’s returning to stable profits and thousands of employees' jobs saved. These incredible achievements all stem from a man with no experience with cars. He was not the typical CEO, never donning a suit and never falling back on logistical jargon when answering reporter questions. But none of that mattered. Fiat Chrysler saw stability and profits as their future with Marchionne’s leadership along with his other quirks and traits.

Marchionne often and willingly spoke his mind, weaving the teachings of the great philosophers into his responses. He wore the same black sweater and jeans combination regardless of where he was going and who he was meeting. He made the final call and stood by his decisions despite the insurmountable risks and was rewarded equally with success. However, even with the best of planning and strategy, the unfortunate happens. Sergio Marchionne passed away at the age of 66 in 2018. There is something about being considered one of the greatest in business that makes someone seem untouchable, that the world’s reality does not exist for them. With this in mind, Marchionne’s passing feels especially heartbreaking. Those who worked with Marchionne knew him as the serious businessman who had a severe addiction to working. But there was a side a privileged few got to see, Marchionne the friend and Marchionne the man. He was an enigma to those trying to get in closer, but Marchionne was a master at keeping his cards close to his chest. For all his quirks, beliefs, and leadership methods, there is one thing that can unequivocally be said about Sergio Marchionne. He was an automotive executive legend that left us far too soon.

ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COMEDIANS AND ACTORS IN RECENT ITALIAN HISTORY Fabio De Luigi can make you laugh with a simple look, an expression, or a goofy smile. Only a few comedians can make you do that; turn a sorrowful face toward the camera and with exquisite, rhythmic timing blink away a tear that causes you to fall into uncontrolled laughter. This is the reason why the very talented De Luigi finds himself now on the crest of the wave of success. It is thanks above all to his comic ability and perfect timing, allowing him to disregard screenplays, and to create for himself his own “niche“ of characters that always ends up being most hilariously effective. Some of the characters played by Fabio De Luigi will remain in the annals of comedic history. Among the many characters, most notably there is Olmo, the sickly sweet singer in love with a Paola Cortellesi who refuses him at every performance, and Fabius, the model with his foul-smelling breath, and Medioman, the superhero who despite his best efforts never really saves the day.

In his latest film “E noi come stronzi rimanemmo a guardare“ or “On Our Watch“, De Luigi plays Arturo whose own technological advancement at work leads to his job being obsolete. From there, his life continues on a downward spiral, but Arturo is determined to keep himself afloat. Along the way he meets the hologram Stella, however their time together is limited. Through De Luigi, Arturo is a relatable character as he tries to navigate this new technological environment. De Luigi plays every role with spirit and passion whether he is making us laugh, cry, or cheer. As we anticipate De Luigi’s visit to Toronto at ICFF, we cannot help but recall what he told an audience back home in Italy at one of his live performances in his usual mild mannered, polite way: “Sarò in sala. Vi prego fatevi vivi!“

Who, of those that have any connection to Italy, hasn't at least once in their life, uttered one of Lino Banfi's cult jokes? His unmistakable Pugliese accent has conquered generations of Italians, from north to south, and abroad. Many —and I for one— have hurled “Disgrazieto“at someone, for the pure joy of it. Even the national football team during the Italy - Turkey game at the 2021 European Championships saw Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne rejoicing after a goal and shouting “Porca puttena!“. This of course was a salute to Banfi in his role as Oronzo Canà, the legendary Longobard coach in his cult film L’Allenatore Nel Pallone (The Soccer Coach). Lino Banfi is perhaps the best representative, or rather advocate, of the brand of comedy that hails from Bari, and which has managed to overcome the borders of Puglia and conquer a large audience. He has made a career, from his start in cinema to the

present, of playing with the clichés, vices and defects of Italians. And he does so with wisdom and humour making fun of the stereotype of the noisy Pugliese, exaggerated in his gestures, and with a language incomprehensible to many. Many are the jokes, indeed the catchphrases, taken up by the actor in his films which have entered the common language. Lines such as “Madooonna Benedetta dell'Incoroneta“, “Ti spezzo la noce del capocollo“, and “Disgrazieto“, to name a few, have been pronounced in scenes such as the famous one in the bathtub, in the 1983 film Occhio, Malocchio, Prezzemolo e Finocchio, by director Sergio Martino. What do these comic, garbled, dialectical words mean? No translation available, I’m afraid. HE HAS MADE A CAREER, FROM HIS START IN CINEMA TO THE PRESENT, OF PLAYING WITH THE CLICHÉS, VICES AND DEFECTS OF ITALIANS. And what of the critics? To those that take umbrage to his making fun of the Pugliese dialect, Banfi answers that he just wants to bring “Pugliesità“ to the rest of the world, “because we [the Pugliesi] are a beautiful people without the drama of the Neapolitans or the Sicilians. I hope I have opened a new path “, concludes Banfi.

Davide Maffei is an Italian writer and director. Living and working in Modena, many of Maffei’s films centre around the themes of design in different industrial companies. Maffei’s first film was “Villaggio Eni“. A pleasant stay in the future (2013). The film follows two men who build an architectural social experiment to create a tourist spot for the oil company’s workers and their families. In 2014 Maffei directed "Tellurica: Racconti dal cratere", which recounts the stories of 10 people that experienced the Emilia earthquakes in 2012. Maffei is the co-founder of Gilson Productions focused on short films and commercial productions. His most recent documentaries "Prospettiva Olivetti" and "Paradigma Olivetti" (2020), follow the history of the iconic Italian industrial company.

The life and work of Italian-Brazilian architect, Lina Bo Bardi (b.1914–d.1992), will surprise anyone unaware of her achievements. Through insightful interviews with friends and colleagues, we come to recognize Lina’s courage and charm embodied in the dramatic gestures of her built works, just as it becomes clear her intentions were directed less toward self expression, and more toward making cultural institutions to embolden, inspire and protect her adopted population. Featured projects include the paradoxically modest but structurally daring São Paulo Museum of Art (1957–68), and the whimsically monumental community “leisure“ center, SESC Pompéia (1977–86)—the collective and in situ design which participated in a “revolution in the modus operandi of contemporary architectural practice.“ Whether we call her work modern, or post-modern, the best way to understand Bo Bardi’s architectural intentions, methods, and results, is as a kind of living poetry.

LINA BO BARDI Lina Bo Bardi (b. 1914, Rome – d.1992, São Paulo) was an Italian-born Brazilian architect, furniture designer, set designer, and journalist whose work combines a Modernist sensitivity with a profound commitment to social responsibility. After graduating in architecture in Rome, she began her career in Gio Ponti's studio in Milan. When Bo Bardi lost her studio to an aerial bombardment in 1943 she became an activist of the Italian Communist Party, and subsequently moved to Brazil. Her iconic architectural projects include the Glass House, built in 1951 in Morumbi, São Paulo, Brasil; São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) designed in 1968; the SESC Pompeia Factory built in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1977–86; and the Casa do Benin designed in Salvador de Bahia in 1988.

In a career now spanning over 30 years, Tornatore’s innumerable accolades (56 wins and 53 nominations) started with the Silver Ribbon for Best New Director for his debut feature film Il Camorrista in 1985, followed by prestigious prizes at Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and culminated with the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film for Cinema Paradiso in 1988. He has also directed the advertising campaigns for the iconic Italian brand Dolce and Gabbana. Tornatore was on the jury for the Venice Film festival in 1993. He has shared a long-standing partnership with composer Ennio Morricone, who worked on 13 of Tornatore’s films.

The film follows the story of Ada, an elderly woman from Puglia, who has always worked as a housekeeper in a beautiful country villa. Now that the house is for sale, Ada is forced to find another place to live. This is a cruel fate for an old woman without a husband or children, who has devoted her entire life to taking care of a house and a family that are not her own. But Ada is a stubborn and proud woman, and rather than leave to be with her sister and have to live with a grumpy brother-in-law, she decides not to give the keys back and, in effect, to squat in the villa.This is where Irene, the daughter of the owner of the property, comes in, returning from Rome to her hometown to try to resolve the issue. Her mission: convince Ada to move out.

She made her screenwriting debut with the film, Il ladro di bambini with Gianni Amelio, Sandro Petraglia and Stefano Rulli in 1992. The film received the David di Donatello nomination for Best Screenplay. She was later nominated for a Nastro D’Argento for the films Sangue vivo in 2001 and Il miracolo in 2004. She directed her first film, Il primo incarico in 2010 which received a nomination for the Controcampo Italiano Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2010 and won the N.I.C.E. award in 2011. After writing other screenplays, she directed her second and third films, In un posto bellissimo (2015) and Sulla giostra (2021).

After participating in Fiorello’s Karaoke and La Sai L’Ultima, the duo continued to gain success, even reaching the semifinals at the Troisi Prize Comic Festival. In 2001, he conceived of and hosted the comedy program Tipi Tochi with Danilo Enfiomusi and Bennu Riolo. Over the years Bruno Tedeschi has accumulated a wealth of emotional experiences that have prompted him to pursue his career in filmmaking. His philosophy of life is that filmmaking is about seizing every moment, to take care of the details and to search for those details in every story; each has its own history and soul. Tedeschi has won several awards in his field such as: 2021 WEVA Awards Best Videographer/Best Engagement, 2021 IGHA Summer/Spring/Winter winner, 2020 WEVA Awards Best Debut of the Year, Best Engagement, Best Video Editor, and Best Videographer, 2020 IGHA Autumn winner.

MAXIMILIAN NIEMANN, ZACKARY CANEPARI, DREA COOPER Maximilian Niemann, born in 1988 in Brandenburg, Germany, is a Hamburg-based film director from Germany. He graduated from the acclaimed Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. He has created multiple award-winning experiences: NBC Universal Shocking shorts, FWA Site of the Year, and Two Clio Silver are a few of his awards. Zackary Canepari, born 1979 in Boston, United States,and Drea Cooper(aka ZCDC) are Emmy Award-winning filmmakers. In 2010, they launched the short doc series California Is A Place,which premiered at Sundance. The success of this show landed the two artists on Filmmaker Magazine’s “Top 25 New Filmmakers to Watch“, which led them to Flint, Michigan to pursue future successful projects. They have a Netflix Original documentary series Flint Town that earned many nominations from Critics Choice Awards and IDA. Their latest Netflix film Fire in Paradise was awarded both an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow award and was shortlisted for an Academy award.

This film follows the radical filmmaker, poet, and author Pier Paolo Pasolini and the important connections to his life growing up in Bologna. Pasolini pushed the boundaries of film and literature during post World War II in Italy. He often found himself highly criticized for his political beliefs and taboo topics he wrote or filmed. Moving between the political unrest in Italy and his own personal challenges, and countless charges and lawsuits about the nature of his writings and films, Pasolini somehow still managed to be considered a great director and his films were highly popular. Obsessed with class culture and divide, these struggles made many appearances in his films along with his contempt of consumerism. Through Marrese’s documentary, audiences will get an inside look into one of the world’s most controversial filmmakers.

BOLOGNA: HOME OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL DIRECTOR EMILIO MARRESE Emilio Marrese is an Italian director, writer and journalist. Born in Naples, he eventually moved to Bologna and then to Rome where he stayed until 2015. Since 1987, Marrese worked as a journalist for the newspaper the “Rupbblica“. He released his first novel in 2010 called “Rosa di fuoco“, for which he won the 2011 Coni Award for sports fiction. Marrese has also written multiple documentary films. In 2010 his film “Via Volonté n.9“ won the Best Documentary category at the Rome Independent Film Festival. The film follows families in a particular building as they attempt to pay rent and support their families by working an honest job. Marrese’s most recent project “Il Giovane Corsaro -Pasolini da Bologna“ (2022) commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of the legendary figure Pier Paolo Pasolini.

In 1988 he opened his own film production company Pidgin which produced Paolo Fiore Angelini’s film “Paris, Dabar“ (2003) and Gropplero’s documentary film “Comunismo Futuro“ (2017). The film analyzes communism in the 21st century using archives from Russia and Italy and their communist movements. Gropplero focuses largely on documentary film. His short film “Quando l'Italia mangiava in bianco e nero“ (2015) takes an in-depth look at the eating and cooking traditions of Italians and how they have changed to constitute what is “good food“. His most recent documentary “Il colore della fatica“ (2021) follows the harrowing event that is the Tour of Italy.

THE MAREMMA FELIX INVESTIGATION DEALT WITH MAFIA INFILTRATIONS AND THE INVASION OF RUSSIAN OLIGARCHS IN THE MAREMMA (TUSCANY) TERRITORY ROBERTO MORRIONE AWARD The Roberto Morrione Award for Investigative Journalism was created in 2011 out of the desire by relatives, friends and colleagues to keep alive the memory and the professional example set by Roberto Morrione. It is promoted by Associazione Amici di Roberto Morrione (Friends of Roberto Morrione Association) and Rai and focuses on two main points: investigative journalism and young people. The Award, now in its tenth edition, funds the production of investigative projects run by young people under the age of 30 on topics relevant to the Italian and/or European political, social and cultural life, such as: environment, rule of law, human rights, new technologies, economic development.
