These past two years have represented an unprecedent challenge for everyone around the world and, despite the many obstacles in the way, the ICFF has continued striving with passion and enthusiasm to create a new festival that would reconnect people and communities. “Share emotions together again” was last year’s motto and now more than ever we want to reinforce and highlight the importance and value of this message.

ICFF, presented by Lavazza and supported by the Italian Embassy, Consulates, and the Italian Cultural Institutes, this year brings an enhanced three-week program with exceptional drive-in screenings, and more films, communities, and events for everyone. The festival introduces new open-air cinemas, recreating the classic and beloved cinema atmosphere outdoor, in a distanced, glamorous, and safe fashion.

This year marks the milestone 10th anniversary of the festival, and ICFF is thrilled to celebrate this incredible birthday with everyone, bringing the best of Italian contemporary cinema to audiences in Ontario and across Canada, thanks to the ICFF digital platform. We are excited to present many new releases, amongst them the latest masterpiece by Gabriele Muccino, Gli anni più belli, and honour ICFF’s history by bringing back the former winners of the ICFF People’s Choice Award. The Festival is also proud and thrilled to present for the first public screening of the latest Disney and Pixar animation, Luca.

The 10th edition of the ICFF is also filled with Special Events celebrating the different facets of Italian culture. ICFF Moda takes a deep dive into the Italian contemporary fashion and make-up industry. ICFF Architettura and Design, presented by Great Gulf and in partnership with Cecconi Simone, takes the audience on a journey across the ocean to rediscover Italian architecture and art. ICFF Champions honours Italian contributions to sports and focuses on cycling. ICFF Letteratura celebrates the 700-year anniversary of the death of the medieval poet and philosopher, Dante Alighieri.

While adjusting to the new reality and awaiting to go back to the cinemas, ICFF hopes to bring back the feeling and sense of community typical of the movie-going experience. Cinema is truly a unique medium and has a special way of connecting people and, with this incredible festival, we hope to do just that, reconnect people through engaging and insightful films and events across Canada.

I am certain that everyone in attendance will be entertained and engaged by the films being showcased this year.

A lot has been asked of us during these difficult times, which I hope we will very soon leave behind. We have made significant sacrifices but it has not dulled our spirit of initiative or the desire to make art and enjoy life that are synonymous with our country.

The Italian Contemporary Film Festival is concrete proof of this will.

Film is a powerful tool for cultural growth, thanks to its ability to convey feelings and emotions to a wide and varied audience directly and effectively.

At this critical time, the ICFF organizers have shown great resilience and creativity, as usual. By turning the Festival into a drive-in, while also making the programming available on an online platform, they have brought together innovation and tradition, two key elements of Italian culture.

This year’s film selection is once again rich and varied, and includes among others the North American première of Gabriele Muccino’s latest film “The Best Years.” And, we will also have the pleasure of rediscovering award-winning films from past editions, which are screening in celebration of the ICFF’s tenth anniversary.

Italy has a long and proud history of excellence in the film industry, with a wealth of outstanding actors, directors, screenwriters and composers, toghether with very skilled film crews. And still today, Italian cinema continues to amaze us with beauty and emotions that are unique to its cultural tradition.

In fact, the Italian film industry is recognized as a national treasure for its elevated cultural and economic significance, and it enjoys the full support of both the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

OUR 2021 OPENING MOVIE The ICFF, presented by Lavazza, is thrilled to announce that the 10th edition of the Festival will open with Disney & Pixar’s upcoming original feature film Luca, directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa.

The screening will feature an exquisite Luca— themed dinner prepared by Eataly, and will include a special greeting from Enrico Casarosa and from Character Art Director Deanna Marsiglese, an Italian-Canadian and proud Torontonian.

The Special Opening Screening of Luca was a gift from Disney & Pixar to the Italian-Canadian community, honouring this celebration and providing audiences with an opportunity to reconnect after a long period of isolation.

FILM PLOT Disney & Pixar’s original feature film Luca is a coming-of-age story about a young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

AN INTERVIEW WITH ENRICO CASAROSA DIRECTOR OF DISNEY AND PIXAR’S FILM LUCA

by Cristiano de Florentiis What elements of your Italian culture, identity and general approach to life did you bring to Pixar and this film? And, if any, what Italian customs did you want or had to change to be able to integrate into this new working environment?

I’ve lived in the US for more than twenty years.

Making the films I make enables me to embrace my roots and share them with our team and with the world once they’re done. I loved sharing the details of our beautiful Italian language, our amazing food (specifically the Ligurian one) and all the wonderful details of our small towns. It was a pleasure to play host when we visited Liguria with our team for example. As far as customs go: I think we certainly had a lot more Spritz at Pixar since we started this project! Lastly, we are gunning for Pesto to dominate the pasta sauce world!

The film tackles the themes of finding yourself and the power of friendship to transform us and helps us grow. What does your childhood and Luca’s childhood have in common?

I share a lot with Luca-- like him I grew up a timid and introverted kid with a big imagination. Like Luca I also met a wonderful extrovert that was a whirlwind of fun and passion. Like Luca the friendship with my best friend helped me grow up, challenge myself and chase the things I wanted.

The two boys are hiding a secret underneath the water as they transform into sea monsters-which is what they are. What drove you to tell a story of people who are different?

There is so much at age 12 or 13 that makes us feel odd and out of place. It’s easy to feel like outsiders or losers. The idea of having a second identity that made you feel a sense of shame, something you needed to hide like a sea monster on land would have to, that felt like a great metaphor for all the ways we feel different or other. Especially in the formative years when we’re all trying to figure out our identity.

Tell me about your choice to have Luca set in the 50’s: I love the music from the period. I love the cinema from the period (a true golden age in Italy - Visconti, De Sica, Fellini to name a few). And I love the design (the most beautiful Ape and Vespa!). I also find that in this wonderfully paradoxical way, when you stage something in a specific era like the 50s, the feel of the setting actually becomes more timeless.

The film will bring even more tourists and visitors to one of the most beautiful regions in Italy and in the world. Many will discover your homeland thanks to your film. How do you feel about this?

I’m both happy and worried about it honestly. I feel the timing is right to help tourism back in Italy. But in our research and visits we’ve found how much the region is in need of preservation. The rock walls and terraces need continuous upkeep. The vineyards and the wine making are key to preserving the territory.

Unfortunately many visitors stop over for just a couple of hours and leave. I hope we can promote a tourism that truly values and supports the Cinque Terre. I highly recommend staying at least for a few nights and enjoying the beautiful walks between the towns! Lastly the whole Ligurian Riviera is amazing. Towns like Camogli, Portofino, Portovenere and many more are all stunning and definitely worth a visit!

The drive-in is certainly not an Italian tradition; have you ever had this experience? Toronto will be a unique opportunity, at least for Canada, to be able to see the film on a big screen, in front of an audience that will experience the emotions all together. Will you come and enjoy it?

You have no idea how much I wish I could travel to Toronto for it! I am starved for movie watching as a communal experience, reacting and feeling the emotions and the laughs together. It’s something I absolutely miss and crave! I have actually never watched a movie in a drive-in so I really wish I could be there!!

ENRICO CASAROSA (Director/Story By) joined Pixar Animation Studios in January 2002.

He began as a story artist on Cars before moving on to work on the Academy Award-Winning feature films Ratatouille and Up. He made his directorial debut with the Academy Award-Nominated short film La Luna, which screened theatrically with Brave in 2012. He then went on to work on The Good Dinosaur and the Academy Award-Winning feature Coco. Casarosa then turned his sights to his own feature film, and is currently directing Disney and Pixar’s Luca, which is set to release on June 18, 2021. Casarosa found early influences in Japanese animation and grew up watching Japanese television series in Italy.

Born and raised in Genoa, Casarosa moved to New York City in his twenties to study animation at the School of Visual Arts and Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Before coming to Pixar, Casarosa worked as a storyboard artist at Blue Sky Studios on Ice Age and Robots. He also worked as a background designer and storyboard artist for a number of Disney Channel television series, including 101 Dalmatians and PB&J Otters. Casarosa lives in Berkeley, Calif., with his wife, daughter and three chickens.

ICFF’s debut festival in 2012 took place in Toronto only, screening 16 films in 4 days to celebrate Italian and Canadian culture in Toronto through TIFF Bell Lightbox. Special guests included Ivan Controneo and Rocco Mortelliti.

In 2013, ICFF celebrated Italian and Canadian culture with 34 films and 26 shorts screened in Toronto and Montreal over 10 days!

In 2014, we screened 25 films and 37 shorts over 8 days in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. Special guests included Enrico Brignano, Carlo Verdone, Paolo Genovese, Vittoria Puccini, Danny Glover, Andrea Iervolino, Monika Bacardi, Martina Stella and Stephen Baldwin.

ICFF’s 2012, inaugural poster represented some of the biggest icons in Italian cinema from around the world, including Monica Bellucci and Roberto Benigni from the film To Rome with Love by Woody Allen.

The poster conveys the message that cinema, in its truest form is art and art has the ability to connect people of different nations. The ICFF has always used the art of cinema to connect with audiences all across Canada.

During our 4th annual festival, we shared the joy of film in Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City! We screened 28 feature films.

In 2016, we screened 28 films alongside 22 shorts in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Vaughan, Mississauga, Niagara Falls and Hamilton!

During the 2017 Edition of our festival we held screenings in Toronto, Montreal, Vaughan, Quebec City, Hamilton and additionally, Vancouver!

This poster represents our mandate to bridge the gap between Italy and Canada through cinema!

For our poster, we highlighted Ontario’s multiculturalism and tourism with special attention to the cities where the festival was featured in that year.

The poster also showcases the ways we embrace and honour both Italian and International stars on our Red Carpet and the iconic Italian vespa!

The 8th edition of our festival included 47 feature films and 47 shorts with screenings in Toronto, Vaughan, Montreal, Quebec City, Hamilton, Vancouver, and Ottawa!

The poster of this year’s festival featured a Canadian RCMP officer making his way through Italy on a gondola.

This portrayed our mission and vision of taking our audience on a journey to Italy through film!

The poster showcased a classic Italian Fiat roaming the Canadian country landscape featuring the iconic geese, reflecting our goal of consistently bringing aspects of Italy to Canada.

The 2020 festival was unique to say the least. With COVID-19 restrictions, we presented our audience with the first Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival, co-organized with Chin Radio, honouring the countries most affected by the pandemic. Our 17-night Drive-In was just one of the unique programs coordinated, along with the first ever ICFF At Home, an online film festival for all of Canada!

GET TO KNOW THE ARTIST BEHIND THE ICFF 2021 COVER

ALE GIORGINI is a talented illustrator whose work has been featured in many galleries and exhibitions worldwide. The artist from Vicenza, Italy, claims that he started drawing as a child and never stopped. He has had great success as an illustrator and amassed a diverse collection of well-known clients such as Armani, Emirates, Martini/Bacardi Group, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, Amazon, Jeep, and many others. In 2017, he founded Magnifico Illustrators Agency which represents some of the most talented Italian illustrators. In addition to these many accolades, Giorgini has also taught illustration at IED (Turin), Scuola Internazionale di Comics (Padua), Bauer (Milan), and IDEA Academy (Rome).

Often in your drawings there are cinematic works represented; what emotion does cinema and storytelling give you through cinematic works?

How do you compare it to your media?

I love cinema and I believe it has strongly contributed to building my imagination. I am very fond of a few films in particular that have marked different periods of my life; my living room is a real museum of memorabilia related to these movies. I believe that in some ways, similar to an illustration or a drawing, cinema can be considered a universal language. For instance, I think of the extraordinary first minutes of Pixar’s film Wall-E, which are an outstanding example of how the seventh art can move audiences without needing any words, just like in illustration.

You are an artist whose drawings appear in many international publications; how would you like Italy to be portrayed abroad through your drawings?

Italy is an extraordinary country and it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to be able to tell its many aspects and facets. Often Italy is portrayed with a reflection that binds it to usual stereotypes or iconic places that tell only a part of its beauty.

When in reality, even for me who lives here, it is a continuous discovery and a never-ending source of creative inspiration. This year, for the third year, I will take a break from work and travel for two months through Italy to discover places and landscapes that I have yet to see. I will share this experience live through a series of drawings inspired by the photographs that I take during the trip. If you want to get to know Italy through my eyes you can follow Intervallo (this is the name of my personal project, now in its third edition) on my Instagram profile (@alegiorgini), starting from May 15th until mid-July.

Describe the poster that you have created for ICFF this year: To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the ICFF, I imagined a toast to cinema; with glasses of wine, popcorn, and some “Festival Moments” in the background. I wanted to represent cinema in its “outdoor” version, with its characteristic fashion and cuisine, all framed by a skyline that conceptually connects both Canada and Italy, exactly as the ICFF has done for the past ten years.

Muccino makes his Hollywood debut with the films, The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), and Seven Pounds (2008), both starring Will Smith. In 2010, he releases Kiss Me Again, sequel to The Last Kiss, and in 2012, he goes back to the US to direct Playing for Keeps.

In 2015, he directed Fathers and Daughters, followed by Summertime (2016), There’s No Place Like Home (2018), and his latest film, The Best Years, released in 2020.

Based on the memoir of the same name, She Still Talks to Me (Lei Mi Parla Ancora) tells the love story of Nino and Caterina an elderly couple married for 65 years. On June 10, 1940, Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced the detainment and internment of Italian-Canadians considered a threat to the safety of our country. Under the guidelines of the War Measures Act, the RCMP were given freedom to arrest any person with ties to an Axis nation without proof of threat, disloyalty, or subversion to our government. Out of 150,000 immigrated and Canadian born Italian-Canadians, 30,000 were listed as “enemy aliens” and over 700 were interned in camps.

Some interned men lost sons fighting in the war, others enlisted in the war for Canada once released.

Dante’s Inferno recounts faithfully the first Cantica of the Divine Comedy, through a series of scenes inspired by the drawings of Gustave Doré. In the dark woods, Dante encounters Virgilio and initiates his journey through Hell with him. Dante’s Inferno is the first 5-reel Italian film and is considered one of the masterpieces of the costume drama genre, for which Italian producers created their fame in the 1910s. Its special cinematic and theatrical effects (over impression, the use of ropes and machineries for flying actors) make the film a visionary work, where captions are used extensively and accurately for the first time. The production took almost two years, employing hundreds of extras and huge three-dimensional sets, built in wood and plaster.

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE SOMMO POETA! ” FROM A SILENT CLASSIC TO EXPERIMENTAL SHORTS, THERE HAVE BEEN INTERESTING EFFORTS TO CAPTURE THE DIVINE COMEDY ON FILM” You may never have read a single line of The Divine Comedy, the three-part epic poem published in 1320

by Dante Alighieri, but 700 years later its influence is felt everywhere and has produced a plethora of literary work, and inspired painters and sculptors and musicians for centuries.

Although Dante’s influence in the literary and visual arts sphere is huge, equally significant is his determining role in the evolution of the visual media unique to our times, namely, cinema.

From the silent era, with the 1911 movie L’Inferno directed by Bertolini, de Liguoro and Padovan, through to the era of sound and to film of the present day, as well as its impact on specific directors and actors in international cinema, we see the extent and staying power in the modern world of Dante’s Divine Comedy.

There are surprisingly only a handful of actual adaptations of the Divine Comedy with respect to the time period it was written in. The monumental 1911 classic, L’Inferno, stands as the first. It also happens to be the first Italian feature film ever made. The footage is spectacular, and the primitive special effects still evoke the same shock and emotion they must

have done upon its Premiere. Most recently a unique cinematic journey was produced by heavy metal pioneer, and award winning producer responsible for the progressive rock band Goblin and the soundtrack to Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Maurizio Guarini, who created a compelling new soundtrack to this classic silent film of Dante’s Inferno. In 2017, Toronto’s very own director of the Italian Institute of Culture had the idea and asked Guarini to do a live soundtrack on the occasion of the International Seminar on Critical Approaches to Dante organized by the University of Toronto. The musician saw this incredible film from 1911 and took up the challenge. His first performance took place at Innis Town Hall (University of Toronto), and received a great audience response.

Throughout the years most films, rather than adapt, only reference Alighieri’s work or re-imagine it in a contemporary setting. DeSica, Rossellini, and Fellini have all had a say. In Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, Marcello Mastroianni is a celebrity journalist navigating Rome’s midnight bacchanalias and orgies (with the original Paparazzo constantly in tow) in search of life’s meaning. He personifies a sort of hybrid essence of Dante and Virgil leading us through each of his encounters through the absurdities of a modern hell. Unlike a true adaptation, modern and contemporary films, like La Dolce Vita, feature The Divine Comedy as a metaphor of man’s descent into his own private Hell, with or without Divine attainment.

Two films from the same period, the 1975 Pasolini work Salò o Le 120 giornate di Sodoma, and Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now (1979), borrow intensely in spirit and in kind from the epic poem.

Pasolini deals in extremes. His brush strokes are repulsive as he narrates this parable about the rise of Fas-

cism in Italy, and more. The 120 Days of Sodom draws clearly from Dante’s Inferno as levels of hell are inflicted on 18 youths, forced into a whole variety of unspeakable acts much like the sinners in the 9 circles.

In the film Apocalypse Now, Vittorio Storaro’s cinematography is in itself very Dantesque. The smoldering thick air enveloping most of the scenes is reminiscent of Dante’s Hell, in a story that describes the odyssey of Willard and which is based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Willard is on a mission to find Kurtz, and goes on an emotional, philosophical and theological journey, much the same as Dante did. Kurtz is the face of war; Willard (Dante) passes through circles or stages and when he finds Kurtz he finally understands him and war, as Dante understands evil.

Many are the films that come later and arrive at the present day, that have borrowed or been influenced by the Divine Comedy. Most noteworthy are: Johnny Depp’s From Hell, in which reference is made with the placement of coins on the eyes of corpses to ensure that payment is made for the ferryman, Caronte. The comedy Liar Liar, starring Jim Carrey, also contains one abstruse Dantean reference, a kind of in-joke which only someone who has studied Dante would get. Se7en (1995) stars Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as two detectives who investigate a series of ritualistic murders inspired by the seven deadly sins; Hannibal (2001) features quotes from Dante’s Divine Comedy, while Ron Howard’s 2016 mystery thriller Inferno is steeped in Dantean allusions; and finally even the animated Coco by Lee Kunrich (2017), a Pixar film set

in Mexico tells of a journey into the kingdom of the dead made by little Miguel and his dog named Dante and the friendly Hector - a sort of Virgil.

The theme of Retribution and Redemption has always captivated man, especially the creative mind.

Dante Alighieri immortalized this concept in his masterful opus, The Divine Comedy, and filmmakers since the dawn of cinema have followed his lead and taken inspiration in bringing to the screen man’s quest to know the afterlife.

In 1998, Calopresti released La parola amore esiste, esiste, starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, star of Aspromonte Aspromonte,, who would go on to work with Calopresti on many projects. He would become both a participant and a member of the jury at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2006 would release Volevo solo vivere, vivere, a Holocaust documentary that demonstrated the inevitable influence of his political views on his work. Calopresti has worked with various filmmakers over the past decade as both a director and an actor.

The Award represents an opportunity to produce projects that explore the complex reality of the contemporary world, highlight its shady aspects and tell stories with modern tools and language. It is an initiative that rewards investigative journalism: the jury

formed by professionals and experts selects five projects, divided in two categories: video report and multimedia investigation. The four finalists for this award receive the economic support of 4000 euros each, as well as professional, legal, musical, and technical tutoring. Once produced, a winner is chosen as the Best Report and is given a final prize of 2000 euros.

The Best Video Report is broadcasted on Rai News24. From 2012 to date, 1117 young artists have participated, with 667 investigative topics. Thanks to this Award, 32 reporters’ investigations were carried out.

The film is the portrait of two masters of Italian architecture, extremely different in training and vision, both in search of an architecture that transcends time: Aldo Rossi seemed to find the answers in the abstract thought of things, Carlo Scarpa in the concrete way of putting them into light.

The part dedicated to Aldo Rossi was also created inside the Palazzo della Ragione in Padua, where, in 2019, the exhibition Aldo Rossi and Reason was held.

The past and memory, monuments and what remains of people’s work over time are among the dominant themes of the Milanese architect, the first Italian to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1990, the so-called Nobel Prize for architecture. Aldo Rossi was a complex figure in the Italian architecture of the second half of the 1900s, also thanks to the importance of his thought and theoretical elaboration, as well as to the impact that his writings have. In search of permanent values in architecture, he became a master for generations.

SEARCHING FOR AN ARCHITECTURE BEYOND TIME LIMITATIONS FRANCESCO CONVERSANO AND NENE GRIGNAFFINI Francesco Conversano and Nene Grignaffini have been collaborating with Rai for many years as creators, directors and producers with the Movie Movie, the small factory they founded in Bologna, that has been operating for over 30 years in the field of film production, making documentaries and reportages, privileging the "author documentary" as a place and genre in which to experiment with new languages and different narrative forms. In 2018, Conversano and Grignaffini directed and produced, with the supervision of the architect Michael Obrist of the University of Vienna, a three-part series entitled The Three Architects. Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Gio Ponti, also premiered at the Milan Triennale in 2019 and subsequently at the Maxxi in Rome.

Taking the form of a free-wheeling journey around the world (10 films, 10 cities), the project invites us to observe in detail the multiple forms and complex interactions that exist every day between people and their urban environments.

Somewhere between visual anthropology and observational cinema, these films put urban man under the microscope and encourage us to take a closer look at individual and collective behaviour, interpersonal dynamics, social tensions, and the economic and political forces that play out every day on the grand stage of the city streets. LAVAZZA DRIVE-IN ND 2 EDITION The ICFF and CHIN Radio/TV are thrilled to announce the much-anticipated second edition of the Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival, taking place at Ontario Place from June 27th to July 17th, 2021. This extraordinary event will feature a program showcasing some of the most acclaimed films from across the globe from 16 different countries. Following last year’s objective, the mission of the Festival remains to reconnect communities within the unique multicultural mosaic of Canadian society.

During this three-week program, the ICFF will also celebrate its milestone anniversary with the 10th celebratory edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival thanks to the support of the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and media partners OMNI Television and RAI Italia.

The Lavazza Drive-In Film Festival will officially open its gates on Sunday, June 27th in celebration of Canadian Multiculturalism Day. “Toronto stands as a beacon of cultural diversity in Canada and the world,” said Lenny Lombardi, President of CHIN RADIO/Tv the leading multicultural radio broadcaster in Canada.

“It is important to us that this unique festival launch on the day that celebrates our character as a Nation”.

The Festival will launch its 2nd edition with the Canadian Premiere of The Comeback Trail. The film recounts the story of two movie producers, indebted to the mob, who try to save themselves by setting up an aging actor for an insurance scam.

Another year and another successful edition of ICFF’s Call the Shots: Female Power Through Film. Celebrating International Women’s Day, the annual event remained true to its core, depicting and promoting women’s achievements in film and in the whole of society, the fourth edition delivered exactly that.

The panel discussion with these highly accomplished female officials was a stimulating conversation about their fields and the roles they play, as well as highlighting the importance of female empowerment to ensure that young girls and women are always encouraged and made to feel powerful, and that they can be accomplished and successful in male-dominated industries. The panelists reflected that while the industries are still predominantly male-dominated, we are beginning to see more and more females and visible minorities enter these workforces.

Now, more than ever before, it is crucial that people, and specifically women, push past the societal ideals of where their jobs and futures should take them.

Instead, they should jump towards

ICFF 2021 what drives them, no matter how unconventional it might be. An important common theme between all these women was that none of them were initially drawn to their future careers.

They did not anticipate the paths that would later be laid out before them.

However, when inspiration strikes, or even purely by accident, it is a chance worth taking.

The conversation largely stated that societal biases are continuouly changing in these industries and women are showing their strength, their intelligence and breaking down societal preconceptions of what leadership is in these male-dominated industries by showcasing their own characteristics and personalities and refraining from stereotypes, owning their authentic and unique selves and ascending to positions of leadership and power. Uniforms do not dictate personalities.

The evening ended with the presentation of the first episode of the mini-series, Petra, following a twice-divorced female detective who is surrounded by sexist colleagues and is thrust onto the front line to solve violent crimes.

She shows her power and strength against societal stereotypes by refusing to submit to the compliant role people would prefer she stepped into.

In conclusion, let us continue to show the strength of women and how blue really is becoming the new pink, while always remembering and ensuring that sharing your opinions and your thoughts is important.

Be proud of your successes no matter how small they are, and overcome any obstacles despite the forces working against you. ICFF supports you and stands by you!

MARA CATALDI, DIRECTOR, CALL THE SHOTS When I founded Call the Shots: Female Power Through Film back in 2018, I wanted to create an event that gives voice to successful women in order to empower and inspire others. We want women to have the support of each other, as well as develop a network for them to share experience and knowledge.

We believe that the stronger the network of women, the better their chances for success.

Unlike many other initiatives focused on female empowerment, which are incredibly important in their own right, Call the Shots: Female Power Through Film is unique. With my team, every year, we select a different thematic, not strictly related to matters regarding women. In the previous editions in fact, we spoke about immigration, education, entrepreneurship, and storytelling. For us, what is important to have highlighted on stage is the perspective of women who have achieved great success and have become experts in their respective fields.

This year’s edition looked very different from the rest. Traditionally, each year this event would fill all 550 seats at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. This year, thanks to our digital platform, we were able to bring this Celebration of Women to even more Canadians across the country. This year’s theme is Women in Uniform: Blue is the New Pink and it honours and celebrates women in the protective and public service industries in the areas of Law Enforcement, Firefighting and the Navy/Military.

Through this event, our goal is to encourage the younger female generation to consider a career in Law Enforcement, Fire Protection, the Navy, or the Military. We want to encourage young women to believe that a career in protective and public services, and wearing a uniform proudly, can be their future careers. We as a community, as friends, or as family members need to be open-minded in order to erase the conception that a career path in these areas is a non-traditional choice. It’s important to shine a positive light on women such as our panelists, successful women in uniform, who have made a real difference in our communities and to their safety and well-being, and who can be role models and superheroes for the girls of today and tomorrow.

White Fang, the film adaptation of Jack London’s masterpiece which has been translated into over 90 languages, is an adventure that has thrilled entire generations. Directed by Alexandre Espigares, the animated story features a half-wolf half-dog. The wolf is a proud and courageous creature, and for this reason it will fall victim to man’s cruelty. After growing up in the snowy, wonderful but hostile lands of the Great North, it is welcomed by Gray Beaver and his Native American tribe. Here the animal is protected by the tribe, but will have to be accepted by other dogs. Unfortunately, Gray Beaver will be forced to surrender White Fang to a cruel man, who will force him to transform himself into a fighting dog. This is a story of redemption, and above all, of the extraordinary strength of love that binds an animal inextricably to man.

Mikuan and Shaniss, two teenage girls from an Innu community, are best friends that have grown up alongside one another. However, while Mikuan has always had a loving family and a good future in store for her, Shaniss is trying to build a life for herself and is still picking up the pieces of her shattered childhood.

Their friendship is finally put to the test when Mikuan falls for Francis, a non-native youth from her workshop, and begins to dream of leaving the reserve, creating a rift between the two that shakes the very foundation of their relationship.

Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Naomi Fontaine, Kuessipan (which translates roughly to “Your Turn”).

MYRIAM VERREAULT Best known for her work directing À l’ouest de Pluton/West of Pluto, screenwriter, editor and director Myriam Verreault has spent most of her time contributing to Québécois documentaries. She has worked with the National Film Board of Canada to produce award-winning works such as My Tribe Is My Life and The Devil’s Toy Remix. Her work with Kuessipan saw her take multiple trips to the Canadian North Shore to immerse herself in Innu culture. After falling in love with their community, she decided it was necessary to show the world their way of life.

Kuessipan is her first fiction feature, and has already been selected for more than 50 festivals worldwide.

NANCY FLORENCE SAVARD Nancy Florence Savard made a name for herself by becoming the first Canadian to direct an 80-minute animated feature film in 3D for her work on the 2013 film, La légende de Sarila. Before she was an award-winning director, Nancy started out her career working in the media industry as a journalist, creator, director, production head and associate producer for over 10 years. As a native of Quebec, Nancy decided to create 10th Avenue Productions, launching her career into the film industry. Nancy has since produced the first 100% Quebec-made French-language animated film, The Rooster of Saint-Victor, in 2013, and co-directed and produced Nelly et Simon: Mission Yéti, in 2018.
