I am certain that everyone in attendance will be entertained and engaged by the diverse selection of films being screened during this year’s edition of the festival, and that the many other events planned for the next three weeks –from panel discussions and visual arts exhibits to performances and gourmet tastings– will enhance the experience for everyone involved.

JUSTIN P.J. TRUDEAU The RT Hon., PC, MP, Prime Minister of Canada

I would like to thank the organizers for their hard work and dedication. You can take pride in your commitment to bringing the community together through the medium of film. Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice. Our government knows that building an equitable society—one that is open, inclusive, and rights-based—takes hard work, thoughtful consideration, and engagement. This is why the Lavazza IncluCity Festival is so important. For over 10 years, the Lavazza IncluCity Festival has promoted intercultural understanding that fosters collaboration and engagement, while also highlighting the many different communities that make our country what it is today.

Sending my best wishes to everyone attending the Lavazza IncluCity Festival, taking place during the 11th ICFF! For many years, I’ve been attending the ICFF’s events and multicultural programs. Each year, they go above and beyond to celebrate the many diverse cultures that can be seen across Ontario. As a proud Canadian of Italian heritage, I believe our cultures and traditions define who we are, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with sharing them with each other.

MICHAEL TIBOLLO Hon., Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions

I’ve always believed that the more we celebrate our cultures, the easier it is to love and respect each other. Peace comes from understanding and sharing, out in the open for all to see and hear. Our government is proud to support the important work being done by the ICFF. Through this year’s festival, the ICFF is actively preserving our cultures and traditions, and is truly making Ontario a better place for everyone. I wish you all a wonderful festival!

JOHN TORY Mayor of Toronto

The arts are an integral component of Toronto's cultural and economic fabric that enrich and enhance the lives of many. Throughout the pandemic, the arts and film have played a vital role in bringing people together and providing hope for residents as we navigate these challenging times. Events like the Italian Contemporary Film Festival not only bring a sense of hope and joy to people’s lives, but it also is our way of supporting the talent that is within our city. On behalf of Toronto City Council, I wish everyone an enjoyable and memorable event. Please accept my best wishes for continued success.

Watching a film on a big screen, in a communal space is an irreplaceable experience. That is why we are proud to support the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and the Lavazza IncluCity Festival! In a time of change, Canada has shown the many innovative and resourceful ways in which we make our audiovisual sector thrive. We have given the world many reasons to take notice of Canada and why we are a Partner of Choice.

CHRISTA DICKENSON Executive Director, Telefilm Canada

Telefilm continues to put the needs of Canadian talent and their work at the centre of its decisions. With our modernization efforts along with heightened priorities on equity, diversity and inclusion, and now eco-responsibility, Telefilm has taken major steps to ensure growth and success of the screen-based industry as we head back to cinemas to enjoy the films. Standing united, I want to thank and congratulate ICFF for continuing its work of uplifting a dynamic range of voices through films and celebrating the brilliance of Canadian content at home and around the world. As always, please continue to watch Canadian films wherever they are available and tell others to do the same!

6IX ART OUTDOOR EXHIBIT From June 27 to July 16, the festival is excited to present a one-of-a-kind art exhibit titled 6IX Art Outdoors. The free-of-charge art installation along Gristmill Lane will feature 13 unique statues, standing over 8 feet tall, painted by some of Canada’s most talented multicultural artists.

MISSION STATEMENT The ‘6ix Art Outdoor’ is a constellation of ideas and messages: a place that opens onto a larger cultural and entertaining space, an exhibition that moves through multiple cultures and critically engages emerging ideas and pushes the boundaries of the definition of the art itself. The way that people experience arts and culture is changing, and so too is the type of creative and educational experiences they enjoy. We provide an inspiring and enriching visitor experience that celebrates artistic excellence by thoughtfully engaging a broad group of emerging and established artists and prioritizing diversity in all areas. The '6ix Art Outdoor' will serve as a public space with the goal of fostering intercultural and multicultural dialogue by promoting a more active engagement and awareness within the communities through the use of visual art. This Curator of 6ix Art Outdoor exhibit embraces the value of heritage showcased not only through the humanshape statue but, most importantly, through the artists and the cultural richness they embody: stories, ideas, emotions, desires, dreams, and hopes. We are aware that an exhibit plays only a small part in the complex process of promoting art, integration and the respectful coexistence of different communities and cultural practices. Nonetheless, I sincerely believe that this contribution has an extraordinary potential to challenge prejudice and stereotypes as well as create shared spaces and a sense of belonging.

In this comedy film, protagonist Dhruv Shikhar is an orphan who has overcome all odds but is in desperate need of a family; Anya Mehra, the woman he is in love with, wants to marry a man who has a “sweet family” and a dog. In his quest for a couple of fake parents he finds Purshottam Mishra and Dipti Kashyap, who have a history of their own, and adopts them as his real guardians. Despite this solution, the question remains: will Dhruv be able to persuade Anya to marry him, with the whole façade he has put on?

HON. JEAN AUGUSTINE Augustine served on the boards for many organizations and institutions like York University, The Hospital for Sick Children, the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the Harbourfront Corporation, and served as the National President of the Congress of Black Women in Canada. In all her work Augustine always placed an emphasis on those who were impacted by social, socioeconomic, and racial factors. This was especially true during her time as the chair of the Metro Toronto Housing Authority which provided over 300,000 people with affordable housing.

To be the first in anything is a feat worthy of celebration. Winning a gold medal at the Olympics, receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. But to be the first African-Canadian woman to be elected to the house of Commons is a pivotal moment in Canadian history only one person can claim. That person is the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine. In a career that has spanned over multiple decades, Jean Augustine continues to advocate for social justice with grace and fortitude that is so distinctly Augustine. In her early years Augustine was a bright student living with her grandmother in her home of St. George’s, Grenada. Before immigrating to Canada in 1960, Augustine was already a qualified teacher and completed her master’s in education while in Canada. In a testament to her care and compassion for others, working in education seemed to be the most logical path. Augustine had the ability and care to shape young lives and aid them in their educational journey. Throughout her educational career, what Augustine never lost focus of was supporting community efforts.

The year of 1993 was the year that changed everything for Canadian politics as Augustine was elected to the House of Commons as the first African-Canadian woman to do so. But Augustine did not stop there. Being part of Parliament unleashed an added sense of urgency in Augustine as she championed countless bills once again protecting the disadvantaged and receiving unanimous support for landmark decisions. One of her most notable

successes in Parliament was passing legislation to designate February as Black History Month in Canada. But Augustine’s career hasn’t stalled since her days in parliament. Augustine continues to make an impact wherever she goes. The Jean Augustine Centre for Young Women’s Empowerment focuses on supporting young girls to develop their full potential through programs aimed at raising selfesteem and making an active difference in their communities. Augustine also has other schools, organizations, parks and awards named in her honour. To be first is the most desired result in most things in life. However, to be the first was never Augustine’s goal. Her goal was to find ways to best help those in the communities around her. It didn't matter if it was people in her old riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore or impoverished communities on the other side of the world, Augustine was prepared to do the work. To consistently fight for a

cause as long as she has is a commendable feat and combined with her personal life of raising two daughters with the demands of a political career, Jean Augustine has continued to prove that social justice is a true benefit to us all. What we can all learn from Jean Augustine is that sometimes to be a part of history, you have to be the one to make it.
