ICFF 2016 Program

JUNE 9 - 19 | 2016

ICFF'S 5TH EDITION Welcome to ICFF. This event is one of the biggest Italian festivals in the world, hosting over 27,000 attendees annually. From June 9-19, 2016, the ICFF will show audiences in Toronto, Vaughan, Hamilton, the Niagara Region, Montreal and Québec City the best in contemporary Italian cinema in the world.

CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

This year the ICFF is partnering with the Niagara Integrated Film Festival (NIFF) and will co-produce the ‘Spotlight on Italy’ program. This new initiative will fulfill our mission to bring Italian cinema to an even larger audience. The ICFF is the culmination of a maze of logistical and financial initiatives that would have been unthinkable without the support from our partners: TIFF, The Italian Embassy in Ottawa, the Italian Consulates and the Italian Institutes of Culture in Toronto and Montreal, the Italian Trade Agency, and L’Altra Italia. We are grateful to some of Canada’s largest movie theatre operators, such as Cineplex, Cinema Guzzo, Cinémathèque Québécoise and Cinema Cartier. Our valued collaboration with the TCSB and YCSB allowed us to organize the ICFF Junior, our ‘sister’ program dedicated to students under 18. Over 3,500 students filled our cinemas, making this a truly special year. However, the ICFF is not only a showcase of Italian contemporary films. ICFF eagerly anticipates the third annual ICFF Industry Day presented by SIRT and ETV Film Inc. Once again, the Industry Day will be held at Pinewood Studios Toronto. Virtual Reality and 360 Filming will be the focus of immersive workshops, demos and panels.

MAURIZIO MAGNIFICO MANAGING DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

The festival will also honour Ettore Scola, one of the keystones of Italian-style comedy with FASHI-ON, an initiative created in collaboration with the Ryerson Institute. In celebration of the opening of ICFF Montreal, and in recognition of the exhibition dedicated to Pompeii, we will hold the opening gala at the Montreal Musée des Beaux-Arts. We are proud of our success; our vision is to reach new heights, while remaining a not-for-profit organization: a unique, fun and exciting place to mark June, the Italian Heritage Month. We also want to thank our sponsors and media partners. Finally, I am grateful for the continued support we receive from volunteers, staff and board members who strongly believe in the need for events like this one in our country.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A film festival is as good as the films being produced…and the last few years were truly bountiful for Italian cinema. We have programmed films that won major awards in Berlin, Cannes and Venice. Choosing which films to screen in our Festival becomes more challenging each year, given the enormous amount of high quality submissions we receive. But it is also fun and exciting.

CRISTIANO DE FLORENTIIS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ICFF CO-FOUNDER

The fifth edition of the ICFF, presented by IC Savings, has a lineup of 70 features, shorts and documentaries, including 42 premieres. The selection represents the highest quality and extensive program of contemporary Italian film available. The ten-day festival will feature the film The Correspondence, starring Jeremy Irons, directed by Oscar winner Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso). Also screening is the late Claudio Caligari’s final work, Don’t Be Bad, Italy’s submission for the 2015 Best Foreign Language Oscar, and Gabriele Mainetti’s gritty superhero anti-blockbuster They Call Me Jeeg, winner of seven David Di Donatello awards. Renowned Italian director Renzo Martinelli, notorious for his incisive investigative films, presents his latest feature, Ustica. The 2016 line-up, with so many dramas and an audience eager to welcome moments of depth, favoured the more personal over the extrovert. However, there is also room for levity: The opening film will be Quo Vado?, the highest-grossing Italian film in box office history. Star Checco Zalone and director Gennaro Nunziante will be present. Among the stars coming to Canada is Italian legend Claudia Cardinale, who starred in such classic films as Once Upon a Time in the West, The Leopard and 8 ½. Cardinale will be conferred ICFF’s ‘Lifetime Achievement Award,’ whose previous recipients include Al Pacino, Oscar winner Roberto Benigni and box office superstar Carlo Verdone. Cardinale will also present her latest film, All Roads Lead to Rome together with her co-star, Raoul Bova. Bova will also present the film Rewind and Reboot (Torno Indietro e Cambio Vita). I have had the privilege of working with a remarkable group of programmers whom I can never thank enough for their dedication and sheer competence: Carlo Coen, shrewd and wise; Mara Cataldi, energetic and passionate; Alberto Diamante, ironic and profound. We’re thrilled to champion these films, and equally excited to provide an opportunity for audiences in a record number of Canadian cities to see them at this ever-growing festival. In this year’s poster, two actors ride a Vespa on the red carpet. This recalls our mission, which is to bring the Italian lifestyle to Canada.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AMBASSADOR Congratulations on the 5th edition of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival! To Cristiano de Florentiis and Maurizio Magnifico, complimenti on this achievement and best wishes for continued success! We look forward to many more milestone anniversaries.

GIAN LORENZO CORNADO ITALIAN AMBASSADOR IN CANADA

Another wonderful selection of contemporary Italian cinema awaits growing audiences in Ontario and Québec. In Toronto, Vaughan, Hamilton, and Niagara, the Festival takes place during the celebration of Italian Heritage Month. This happy coincidence highlights the opportunity to celebrate our past – the centuries of tradition and culture and language passed from generation to generation – as we appreciate the dynamism and excitement of Italy’s current film arts landscape. The ICFF has so much to offer film lovers: there are unique opportunities to hear from filmmakers and actors in person, to see major films in their North American premieres, and to discover lesser known independent films. Short of crossing the ocean, I cannot think of a better way to immerse oneself in Italy’s cinema culture! To the founders and organizers, the staff and volunteers, the audiences – to all of you, my sincere thanks and very best wishes for another successful Festival.

GIUSEPPE PASTORELLI CONSUL GENERAL OF ITALY IN TORONTO

A MESSAGE FROM IIC TORONTO Italy is a country of poets, saints and navigators, as an old saying goes. Personally I would add of filmmakers, since Italy has been involved with the industry from its origins in the early 1900s and was highly influential for the development of cinema with the Futurist movement.

ALESSANDRO RUGGERA DIRECTOR ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF CULTURE TORONTO

In the 1940s, we left our mark with the Neorealist movement and branched into various genres, creating a slew of followers worldwide. De Sica and Mario Monicelli developed the "Commedia all'Italiana" which treated important themes with comedy. We have Fellini, who is in a league of his own, as well as Pasolini. Sergio Leone with his "Spaghetti Westerns", Dario Argento, Roberto Benigni, Giuseppe Tornatore, Paolo Sorrentino are just a few to create waves in our recent past. The Istituto is very pleased to collaborate with the ICFF in discovering the new trendsetters of Italian cinema, those who will be honoured, create controversy, explore new approaches to the art of filmmaking, those who will inspire future generations of filmmakers, directors, actors, and everyone else involved in the complex process of entertaining us, making us think, dream and smile.

FRANCESCO D'ARELLI DIRECTOR ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF CULTURE MONTREAL

CANADIAN ITALIAN HERITAGE FOUNDATION Welcome to this year’s celebration of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival. The ICFF, now celebrating its fifth year, is a jewel in the crown of Italian Heritage Month and we are proud supporters of this magnificent event.

MICHAEL TIBOLLO PRESIDENT CANADIAN ITALIAN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

As Canadians of Italian heritage, we have much to be proud. Canada gave many of our families a permanent home that provided freedom, peace and opportunity. With those elements, the richness of our culture was permitted to take root and thrive. Its propagation throughout our society speaks to its richness. It has grown from a Toronto based event to one that now has more than 27,000 attendees in cities across Canada! The value systems of our parents is evident not in words, but in the accomplishments of the generations that followed them and are now following us. Italian Heritage Month is a time to remember their sacrifices, bond with each other and build bridges with other communities that make up the people of Canada. It is also a time to celebrate our achievements and showcase our strengths and continuing contributions to the success of Canada. Canadians of Italian heritage are but one strand of the Canadian mosaic and together with the others, weave the very fabric of our Canadian identity. The ICFF allows us to reconnect with our Italian roots and see what is influencing Italians residing in Italy. Nurture your heritage and be fiercely proud of our country. Canada! As we showcase Italian heritage, it is my hope that the best of all our cultures are highlighted and we strengthen our bonds as one community, one magnificent country. Happy Italian Heritage Month to all! See you at the movies!

Maurizio is a headstrong little boy, who grew up living out a thousand solitary adventures by the creek which Maurizio has transformed from a dumping ground into his own playground. There, his dream of playing in the neighborhood band develops. Maurizio starts to take music lessons with other children in the local band, but is soon the only one left without a musical instrument. His mother Rosa sees music as yet another luxury that the family cannot afford. But Maurizio knows that if he wants to realize his dream he must be determined until the end.

CHECCO ZALONE is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished comedic actors in the history of Italian cinema. His four feature films, co-written and directed by his friend Gennaro Nunziante, Cado dalle nubi, Che bella giornata, Sole a Catinelle, and his latest, Quo Vado?, have all broken Italian box office records. Quo Vado?’s monumental take of 65 million Euro (in three months) was just shy of Avatar’s all-time record in Italy (the equivalent of almost $600 million in the US). Zalone, born Luca Medici, has appeared on countless national television programs, often doing celebrity impressions or performing comedic songs (like his iconic “Siamo una squadra fortissimi” for the 2006 World Cup) that became national events. GENNARO NUNZIANTE is arguably the most successful Italian screenwriter and director of the past thirty years. After working for various television shows, he made his big screen debut in 2009 with Cado dalle Nubi, starring Checco Zalone, which was a box office hit. Nunziante and Zalone continued their successful partnership with Che bella Giornata, Sole a Catinelle and Quo Vado?, all box office hits. He also wrote scripts for other directors, such as Il grande botto, La febbre and Commediasexi.

“Bergoglio” is an extraordinary figure, open to a wealth of interpretations. The film ends the day that he is elected Pope. The movie depicts his human and spiritual adventure from his vocation to the years of training in the Jesuits, from the harsh experience of the dictatorship up until his pastoral mission amongst the poorest people of Buenos Aires. This is the story of the Pope who tried to bring the Church back to its true mission. DISTRIBUTOR Pathé Pictures International GABRIELE SALVATORES is an Italian producer, director and writer. Starting out as a theatre director in 1972, Salvatores has directed many acclaimed films including Mediterraneo, which won an Oscar in 1992 for best foreign film. His screenplays are described as an escape from reality, with a sense of nostalgia. His newest film Invisible Boy is a fantasy based on a boy who discovers he has a supernatural skill: invisibility.

Michele is 13 and lives in a quiet seaside town. He is not popular at school nor is he a brilliant student or very good at sports. But deep down, he does not care. Michele would settle for catching the attention of Stella, the girl he cannot help looking at all the time in class. Unfortunately, the girl is totally unaware of his presence. One day the monotony of normal life is shattered by an amazing discovery: he looks in the mirror and finds that he is invisible. The most incredible adventure of his life is about to begin.

He has directed several short films and worked as an assistant director for Paolo Sorrentino on the Oscar®-winning "The Great Beauty." With Sorrentino's help and mentorship, Messina developed his ability to deliver a stunning sensory experience.

Among the large rooms of an old villa, Anna spends her days in solitude. The rugged Sicilian countryside surrounding the house isolates her while the slowly rising fog obstructs her view. Only the footsteps of Pietro, the handyman, break the silence. One day Catherine appears, a young woman who claims to be the girlfriend of Giuseppe, Anna’s son. He invited her to Sicily to spend a few days’ holiday together. The two women do not know each other. Giuseppe is not there. The days pass, the two women get to know each other, and learn to wait.

Members of the Camorra on the run and a theatrical group meet after they are shipwrecked on an island-prison.

On June 10, 1940, Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced the detainment and internment of Italian-Canadians considered a threat to the safety of our country. Under the guidelines of the War Measures Act, the RCMP were given freedom to arrest any person with ties to an Axis nation without proof of threat, disloyalty, or subversion to our government. Out of 150,000 immigrated and Canadian born Italian-Canadians, 30,000 were listed as “enemy aliens and over 700 were interned in camps. Some interned men lost sons fighting in the war, others enlisted in the war for Canada once released.

The film explores the bonds of friendship that form among people who have never met as they undertake an arduous journey: a trek 300 kilometers through the mountains of Sicily in the hottest month of the year. They have one thing in common -- a determination to honour the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers during WW2 by reclaiming lost history. Some walk in the footsteps of their fathers, seeking to learn something important that their dads never talked about. Most know they don't have what it takes physically to complete the journey, but are determined to try. They are part of a commemorative event that take place on the 70th anniversary of the Operation Husky in 1943.

RINO NOTO has been both internationally recognized as a photographer and a director during his twenty-five years as an artist. Noto conquers the moving image in his documentary Piazza Petawawa: The Paradox.

CAST Marco Leonardi Caterina Murino Lunba Azabal

RENZO MARTINELLI was born in 1948 in Cesano Maderno. A producer and author who knows the art of risk, he began his career in 1994 as a director with Sarahsarà, and continued to confront burning past and present social issues in films including Porzûs (1997) Vajont - La diga del disonore (2001), Piazza delle Cinque Lune (2003), Il mercante di pietre (2006) and Barbarossa (2009).

On June 27, 1980, the commercial flight Douglas DC-9 on route from Bologna to Palermo exploded mid-air above the islands of Ustica and Ponza, leaving no survivers. Thirty five years later, Ustica remains one of the most painful mysteries of Italy. Three causes have been advanced as the cause of the disaster: Structural failure of the plane, a bomb on board, a missile. Until today, none of these hypotheses has been proven. After three years’ work in close contact with two aeronautic engineers, an enormous amount of expert reports, and testimonies put forth since the tragic night of 27 June 1980, Ustica delivers a new, frightening truth, irrefutably supported by documentary material.
