New Year is the time when many of us spend time reflecting on any changes that could improve our day to day lives. The last couple of years have been tough, so anything we can do to benefit our physical and emotional wellbeing, must be worth some consideration. So, we asked Sara Whatley to look at ways to help us feel and achieve a whole-body wellness, all year long. We also have a chat with Maggie Murphy, CEO of Lewes FC, about how this local club is punching well above its weight in equality, inclusivity and diversity – it’s a refreshing read! Enjoy the first issue of 2022 and wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

INTERVIEW

Lewes FC is a football club punching well above its weight. Not only do they play at an extremely high level, they are dedicated to making social changes for good. Sara Whatley met with CEO powerhouse Maggie Murphy to talk football politics, their stance on equality, fan ownership and the love of the game

hen Maggie Murphy was 13, she came over from her Isle of Wight home, to play football against Lewes FC at The Dripping Pan, their hallowed home ground. At that time there were no girls clubs where she lived so football-mad Murphy joined her local women’s team, despite being slightly underage. Playing undercover using someone else’s name, as ‘a ringer’ she scored three goals and says from that moment on, Lewes was indelibly linked to football in her memory. Over twenty years later I met up with Murphy, now the CEO of Lewes FC, for a coffee and a chat about the club she runs, and to learn how Lewes FC is using football as a platform to make sweeping changes in equality, inclusivity, diversity, and anti-gambling. “In 2017 I saw that Lewes FC had taken the decision to pay and treat their women’s and men’s teams equally. Finally I was seeing someone put their money where their mouth is. They were doing something that might cost them or cause them pain, but for me on the outside this was a ray of light,” Murphy enthused. She found the club’s decision so phenomenal and inspirational that she bought a share. Since 2010 Lewes FC has been owned by its fans and investors just like Murphy who see something that gives them hope. “I became an owner to say to them, I see you. I back you.” After she bought her share Murphy thought no more of it. She was living in Berlin and had just finished setting a

In 2017 I saw that Lewes FC had taken the decision to pay and treat their women’s and men’s teams equally. Finally I was seeing someone put their money where their mouth is Guinness World Record for the highest altitude football match ever played, which was part of the campaigning that she had been involved with for the previous couple of years. “I started to get very active around gender equality and football. I’d lived all around the world and met many other women who felt similarly to me. Bit by bit, we got 30 women from 20 different countries, climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and in the volcanic crater we played a 90 minute football match.” Murphy admitted it was not a high quality game as players could barely breathe up at that altitude! The group called themselves Equal Playing Field, and this is what Murphy calls her “off pitch work.” Over the next couple of years Murphy carried on campaigning with the group for equality and diversity in football and set more world records; they are now up to five. This small group of women has grown into a bigger global network that come together to support each other and set records. “Our tag line is ‘Opportunity. Equality. Respect. Nothing more. Nothing less’,” Murphy told me. Murphy put the rest of her abundant energy into her work: “I worked in anti-corruption and human rights as an advocate and policy expert,” she explained. When the FIFA corruption scandal broke in 2015 (U.S.

federal prosecutors disclosed cases of corruption by officials and associates connected with FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association)) it walked directly into her field of expertise. “I remember being infuriated by the people in charge of governing and promoting football in the world. They were in it for their own greed, power and interests and that was stifling the growth of women’s and youth football. I know of many female players around the world who didn’t receive funds from governing bodies that were allocated to them.” Murphy recalled a particularly poignant story a young woman had told her, of her team’s winnings being taken by a man from the football federation for safe keeping, and the team never seeing that money again. This shocking scandal acted as a wake up call for Murphy. Added to that all the millions of tiny decisions that were made which stopped women’s football thriving – poor pitches, handme-down kits, winning cup finals and it rarely being mentioned in the newspaper – suddenly built up to an issue for Murphy that could no longer be ignored. “There were no women involved in decision making, neither within local clubs nor right up to within FIFA. I’ve been very active in calling for more diversity in clubs at decision making level but also in companies making decisions around what or who to sponsor,” said Murphy. She explained that Lewes FC have recently had a big-brand fashion sponsor come onboard and invest in both the women’s and men’s teams. Murphy believes there is a concern that sponsors get stuck in ruts doing the same old thing, but to move forward they need to be bold and invest in something before it’s at the peak of its success.

not selling out, doing everything ethically; basically trying to be that football club Murphy always dreamed of when she was playing as a little girl. The thing that attracted Murphy to the club in the first place, their stance on equality, is only growing in strength today. Their hope was that other clubs would follow suit once they saw how well it worked, but so far Murphy says, “we understand that there might be one team in Lesotho that pay their women and men equally, but that’s how far you have to go to find another club [doing

PIC: JAMES BOYES

Murphy was now fully politicised in her thinking around football, and Lewes FC had taken note. Going back to 2017 when she invested in her share of club ownership she thought she would never visit the club, or Lewes, or really have much more to do with it. But gradually the two spheres of Murphy’s world and the world of Lewes FC kept bumping into each other. They both received the same sponsorship from a third-party, which led them to be in a meeting together. “We built a good relationship, good contacts. I met one of the directors and had a chat about how I was changing jobs, then a few weeks later she gave me a call and said ‘Hey! There might be a role at Lewes FC that you might be interested in!’ I thought, ‘I campaign about football, I don’t work in football.’ But I realised I had been set my own challenge to put my money where my mouth is.” And she took it. As the General Manager, Murphy’s role was to oversee all of women’s football, but after two years she had branched out into all aspects of the club, and was delighted to be appointed to CEO. “I wanted to take the club to the next level after having such a positive affect on the women’s side,” she said. But it wasn’t just about football, it was maintaining the club’s principles,

The women’s side is one of the top 20 clubs in the country and the men’s first team, The Rooks, are currently members of the Isthmian League Premier Division what we’re doing].” It’s more than just equal pay however; they split resources equally, play women and men at the same ground (most women’s teams don’t play at their own ground, they rent other grounds for them). They have the same training facilities and they market the games equally, which is saying to the

wider public that they value the product equally. “To prove we value it equally we have had to raise the ticket prices every year for the past five years for the women’s games so they are the same as the men’s games,” explained Murphy, showing true change in action. “Ultimately it comes down to equal treatment and equal value,” she said. And Lewes FC’s players reflect that. They support each other, going to each other’s games and creating a culture where every member is valued. Regardless of their stance, they play at an extremely high level; the women’s side is one of the top 20 clubs in the country and the men’s first team, The Rooks, are currently members of the Isthmian League Premier Division. “This is a proper club,” said Tony Russell, The Rooks Manager. The men in particular love playing for a club that is well managed, above board, who pay its players on time, who have a good fan base and a good community. Lewes FC have created a club with purpose and vision, which is more than just the sum of its parts. They are also dedicated to looking after their players on and off the pitch. even other roles in their own club are all identified. Ini Umotong is not only a striker for the women’s first team, she is also the Commercial Officer for the club; often football is a dual career for women. As we have already seen, Murphy is passionate about the equality issue for women’s football and having women in decision-making roles, but a brilliant example of that in action at Lewes FC is the women’s home kit. “Having a woman involved in designing our kit meant I could say, ‘hold on, do we have to have white shorts for the women?’ Now our women play in black shorts and our men white shorts, and hardly anyone notices. Our women are so much more comfortable and confident playing in black shorts; it takes a little bit of anxiety out of their day when they’re playing in front of hundreds of people.” Another example is communication. Our coaches have learnt that male and female players have differing styles of communication and learning, so they have had to adapt their coaching style accordingly to get their messages across to the players. Murphy believes another point holding back the growth of women’s football is the timing of the games. Many women who play women’s football would love to go and watch

When the FIFA corruption scandal broke in 2015 I remember being infuriated by the people in charge of governing and promoting football in the world women’s football too, but all games kick-off on a Sunday afternoon when they are playing themselves. But Lewes FC’s stance of using football for good and paving the path for change is fully in action. When the club went into community ownership in 2010, just after the financial crisis, a small number of Lewes people came together to buy it. This number grew from six people to 100 to now almost 2,000 owners from 35 different countries around the world. Every one of these owners has the ability to exercise their democracy by voting in the Board of Directors and making many other decisions for the club, from the small to the big, all of which feed back into the club plans and influence things. Like the new Club Strategy which is published on their website for all to see and which increases transparency. “Every new owner gives us more clout when we fight

for things such as reducing the amount of gambling promotion in football or reducing the gap in the FA Cup prize money (women currently earn less than 1% of what the men earn). This is a movement; it’s not just a football club.” Football already has a huge influence on culture (think Marcus Rashford’s Football Against Food Poverty or players taking the knee to promote a message of anti-racism), which can be used for good or bad. There are many things in this world that need to change; inclusion, equality, representation, women in government to name but a few, and as Murphy said, “our choice is whether to use football to bring about changes. We’ll get there but we’ll get there a lot quicker if we use football.” Ultimately though, Lewes FC is still a football club and they still want to win games and play the best football they can; they just want to do it ethically. A vital part of matches is the crowd – the support from fans. Murphy explained attendance has been up and down over the lockdowns, as restrictions came and went, but now they are really keen on encouraging new fans. “We open up the big doors to the ground now on match days instead of just having the turnstile, and have attendants showing you where to go. If you’re even slightly intrigued then come to a game! See if you like it!” encouraged Murphy. I had one last question for Murphy before she disappeared back up to her crow’s nest office overlooking the pitch. Has she managed to hold onto her love of football now it’s her job? “I find it incredibly stressful watching the Lewes games, we have to be 3-0 up before I relax. Otherwise I pace around the ground! It means so much now, it’s more than a game. It’s trying to prove football can be good both on and off the pitch.” As Murphy has proved time and again actions speak louder than words, and so her love of football must run deep as you can find her playing with the Vets on a Friday night at The Dripping Pan – football coursing through her from the political, to the radical, to the studs on her boots. l www.lewesfc.com

oirée Lounge Bar has recently opened at the top of the High Street in Uckfield. As the name suggests, it offers a different experience for the discerning person, looking to find somewhere distinctive and relaxing for a drink and conversation, whilst out in the town.

“The aim is to create the atmosphere of an elegant hotel lounge bar,” explained Lauren, one half of the husband and wife team behind this new venture. The décor reflects this ambition with a blue and gold theme, tasteful lights and a large mirror. The seats are extremely comfortable, and the provision of table service eliminates queuing at the bar. The background music is discreet, and the whole ethos is to encourage people to linger longer over a drink, and chat. “We want people to have a good experience,” said Lauren’s husband, Towfique. “It isn’t about packing the place with lots of people but ensuring that those who come can sit down, relax and enjoy themselves.” Soirée Lounge Bar offers a wide range of drinks with beers on tap, ales, spirits and fine wines, including from

Lauren and Towfique are not new to the hospitality scene in Uckfield, they also run the highly successful Amira’s Kitchen in Grange Road. Their intention is for the Soirée Lounge Bar to offer a complementary service, with customers moving seamlessly between the restaurant and the bar, maximising their evening out. As parents of two young daughters themselves, they know how important it is, on a carefully planned outing, for the experience to be broadened beyond the duration of a meal and the Soirée Lounge Bar offers this. Visitors can buy pre-dinner drinks or extend their evening once they have eaten. It’s a perfect venue for those who don’t necessarily want a meal out but do wish to meet up with friends for a few drinks and a chat in a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. And, whilst it

This could be the perfect opportunity to make a positive change to becoming a better and happier you. We look at topics under the headings of Nutrition, Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing and will delve deeper into them, during each month of 2022.

Nutrition EATING We are what we eat, but what will we be eating in 2022 to keep us feeling healthy and happy? Overall, our interest in food and nutrition continues to grow with health conscious and environmental choices like cutting down on meat, going vegan and eating locally sourced food. We all got into cooking and baking more during lockdowns and the homecooking movement continues to be embraced with cosy, comforting, carb heavy meals, such as pizza and pasta dishes taking centre stage. Perfect for the cold months of the New Year!

Health conscious consumers are still after great tasting, interesting drinks and drink companies have delivered; beers, wines and spirits are all available alcohol-free, and even cocktail bars and nightclubs are getting on the booze-free train too. This trend is particularly big with the younger generations, so the stigma of teetotal is definitely on the way out. blood oxygen and electrocardiogram (ECG) activity. FRESH AIR The importance of fresh air, nature and being outside became paramount over lockdowns, and thankfully this trend has stuck. A newfound respect for the healing properties of immersing yourself in nature has been found by many, and workouts are moving away from the confines of the gym and into the great outdoors. Wild swimming, running in nature, outdoor gyms, bootcamp classes, tai chi in the park – whatever you chose the added bonuses of exercising outdoors are supreme.

Mental Wellbeing MINDFUL LIVING The link between a healthy mind and a healthy body is becoming more paramount than ever and it’s a common practice these days to combine both aspects into a fitness regime. DOWN SCREENS So much of our modern day lives is spent on a screen; we work, shop and play on computers, use our phones to keep in touch with friends, family and the world, and countless other things too. And then we relax in front of our TV screens and catch up on our favourite programmes and films. But too much screen time can be detrimental to our health and lead to a host of problems – bad sleep, obesity, neck and back pain, depression and anxiety. Limit screen time daily, especially before bed, and engage in other fun activities instead; read, cook, talk, be creative, get outside to play and exercise or simply let your mind be still. l

Liberty&Love Liberty & Love is passionate about women feeling good about themselves, offering a range of beautiful underwear and nightwear that is aimed for real women, of all shapes and sizes, as Helen Stockton discovered when she visited

L

iberty & Love is a new company that offers women a different lingerie experience. It stocks items that women would choose for themselves and that feel comfortable on the school run, or out walking the dog, but which also make them feel feminine and sexy. It challenges the notion that lovely underwear is only for special occasions and date nights, providing lingerie

that women will want to wear every day. Founder, Beth Kates, is keen to promote body positivity, countering the trend for airbrushed, digitally enhanced photos of women, often used by the wider media, to promote women’s products. These generally only serve to make women feel that their bodies aren’t good enough. “Women come in different shapes and sizes: tall, thin, short, curvaceous,” said Beth. She uses actual women, with all their perfect imperfections, not professional models in her marketing and she keeps the photos real and untouched. Her products are also for a range of ages, from teenagers to the more mature woman. “I’m fifty: no-one markets to my age group,” said Beth, stressing the invisibility of older women. “One of the models we work with is fifty-six.”

Women of all ages can feel confident wearing her products

Her pieces are designed to look good and to flatter, as Beth explained, “very few women look great or feel comfortable in a few scraps of lace held together with string!” Women of all ages can feel confident wearing Liberty & Love products. Her lingerie, swimwear and nightwear aim to sit comfortably mid-range, not cheap but not the most expensive, with quality being all important. Beth tries the products out for herself with swimwear tested

in the swimming pool to make sure it stays put when you jump in! Women can come to her for a personal fitting. Sometimes they come in groups and have a collective experience with a few glasses of Prosecco. There is also the option to buy online, and Beth’s ethos of a quality experience extends there too. Each item is carefully wrapped and boxed, making each purchase a gift to yourself. “I try and be realistic about the descriptions of all my products. If a bikini is better suited for lounging by the pool than vigorous swimming I will say so,” said Beth “and I’ve had some really positive

feedback.” Beth chooses her product range carefully, “I am really particular about the items I choose to stock. If I don’t like it or I don’t think the quality is good enough then I don’t sell it.” Beth aims to offer different products to the major High Street retailers giving customers an alternative shopping experience. “I want all women to have the kind of lingerie I would like for myself,” said Beth, “that’s what ‘Liberty & Love’ is all about.” l

Why talking together could be the tonic we need in 2022

Have you ever felt lonely, despite having people around you? Do you feel unable to talk to others about what is important to you? Feeling lonely is not always caused by being on our own. The experience of loneliness can also occur because we are not able to communicate with those who are nearest to us. We can’t share what matters most and we start to feel disconnected. Events of the past two years will only have added to our loneliness - we’ve been apart more than we’ve been together. But perhaps 2022 is the time to try something new…

Try talking together in a group It may seem a little bit strange to think that opening up in front of strangers would be easier than talking with loved ones, but many people actually prefer it. Group therapy is a safe, supportive and confidential space where you can share your feelings, problems and worries, without judgement. Each group is led by an experienced Group Facilitator who will welcome you and help you settle in to the dynamics of the group. There are no rules about what you can say or not say, and you can contribute at a pace that you feel comfortable with. Some people observe and listen for a while, others jump right in and are relieved to be able to express what they’ve been keeping inside. It’s really up to you.

Sharing experiences One of the biggest benefits of group therapy sessions is the shared experience with others who might be going through the same thing as you. By listening and talking together, you can learn from each other and share coping strategies and perspectives. Group therapy members reported feeling more connected and less alone than they did before they joined the group. If you’re interested in finding out more about how group therapy can help you express yourself and feel more connected with others, then get in touch and we can help you find the most appropriate group for your needs.

“Loneliness does not come from having no people around, but from being unable to communicate the things that seems important to ourselves, or from holding certain views which others find inadmissible.” Carl Gustav Jung, Swiss Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst

n Safe, supportive space Each group is a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space, with a Group Facilitator who oversees the experience.

n Set your own pace You’ll have time and space to settle into the group, you can participate as much as you feel comfortable and leave if it becomes too difficult.

n Feel connected By sharing with others you’ll discover that you are not as different as you feared in the first place, and other people have similar experiences.

WELLBEING

Herbs for HEALTH

Local herbalist Sarah Hillyer shares her knowledge and remedies for treating that perennial bug bear: the common cold

T

here’s no getting away from the fact that sore throats, coughs and runny noses affect us all, especially during winter. Luckily, there is plenty that we can do to ‘nip it in the bud’, ease the symptoms and hopefully lessen the effects. Take sore throats, for instance. A sore throat is usually the first sign that we are fighting a virus. A favourite remedy is honey and garlic. Crush 2-3 cloves of garlic and put them in half a

jar of honey. A teaspoon of this, several times in the first few hours, will often stop a virus in its tracts. Alternatively try a propolis tincture (see recipe, next page). If you know a friendly beekeeper, ask him if he can spare a little precious propolis. It’s a powerful antibacterial agent which bees make to keep their hives healthy. Then there’s the cough. Many viruses travel down the airways and damage the fragile membranes of the bronchi that lead to the lungs. The body then quickly tries to heal itself by producing mucus, resulting in the congestion of the airways and coughing fits. Try making a chest rub which passes through the skin directly to the infected area or this simple herbal cough remedy (see recipes, next page).

Chest Rub

Take 100ml of good quality oil (almond or very mild olive oil) and add 10 drops each of rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint and hyssop essential oils. If you can only find two of these, that’s fine. This is an excellent rub to massage on to the front and back of the chest just before bedtime.

CAUTION: Always consult a qualified healthcare professional if you are unsure of any medical symptoms.

How to Choose A Dentist Do you feel comfortable with the dentist? This may be a gut-instinct but do you feel they are listening to you and giving you bespoke advice related to your mouth and habits. You only have one set of teeth so be careful who you entrust them to. Remember this should be a relationship for life; if you do not feel comfortable, find someone else.

1

Choosing a Dentist can be confusing and a bit daunting, so having the right dentist can help calm any fears you have about an impending dental visit

Is the practice well established? Experience and continuity of care can be very valuable. Will the dentist or hygienist be there next time you have your check-up? It takes time to build a relationship on both sides. They will get to know your mouth, what materials work best in your mouth and how often to review you. Changing dentists regularly can mean you end up with more restorative work undertaken.

3

5

It is best if you can get referrals from as many sources as possible Ask some of your relatives, colleagues or friends if they can recommend reliable dentists.

6

2

Do they have a dental hygienist? Healthy gums are as important as healthy teeth. Does the hygienist clean your mouth thoroughly?

Ask questions The most important thing to remember is to ask questions! Make a list of questions to ask before your appointment as you may forget.

Call Oakmead Dental on 01342 325363 and see how we at Oakmead in East Grinstead are changing Dentistry. Do they guide you in what are the best oral hygiene aids for your mouth?

SOUND ADVICE FROM SUSSEX AUDIOLOGY

M

arvin Gaye may have heard it through the grapevine, but it’s far better to hear it first hand and at each of the three Sussex Audiology Centres, you’ll be hearing it from an expert in their field. The first Sussex Audiology Centre was set up in 1996 by the leading Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon, Mr Bob Tranter who was keen to use his expertise in a broader environment. Since retiring in 2015, it’s been his son,

36 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2022

Most of us take good hearing for granted, but what are the options when the quality of our hearing begins to decline? We sent Robert Veitch to learn more from the experts at the Sussex Audiology Centre in Hove Ben, at the helm of the business. During the last year, Cathy Colclough, Phil Cornwell, Sam Dungate and Dominque Lipscombe have all been recruited to join Ben, Rosanne Westcott, Lauren Willis and Elli Parrish in a growing team. Each brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, having worked in the industry and across the county. Sussex Audiology is proud of its very experienced team. Sussex Audiology have three clinics across south central Sussex, in Haywards Heath, Hove

and Goring-by-Sea and also offer a Domicillary service with Dominique. Clients come from across the region to utilise the expertise the Sussex Audiology team have to offer. Each clinic offers the same comprehensive service, specialising in hearing tests, micro-suction, and the expert fitting of hearing aids, with a full aftercare service. Those that can’t get to a clinic shouldn’t fear, as a home visiting service is also available. Ben told me Sussex Audiology is an independent company and

he was keen to point out, “We always recommend what’s best for the client, because we are unbiased and have no commercial links to manufacturers.” He told me the driving force behind better hearing aids has been improvements in technology and the willingness of the public to come forward and get their hearing tested. Phil said, “Those bulky hearing aids people might remember from the past have been superseded by smaller, better, modern products.” Sam added, “The stigma around hearing aids should really be a thing of the past. Modern hearing aids are small and discreet, they’re also rechargeable and offer connectivity to the television, the telephone, the doorbell and other devices.” Phil explained hearing loss can happen at any time of life. It can It seems obvious once you know, but as Sam made clear, “Often the individual whose hearing is starting to fail isn’t the first to notice. It’s those around them that can often notice… a louder television or radio, being asked to ‘speak up’, becoming disengaged at social events.” He suggested the sooner a hearing test takes place, the greater the chance of rectifying any problems.

Hearing assessments are free at any Sussex Audiology clinic

also be hereditary, directly from one generation to the next, or in the form of a recessive gene from a grandparent to a grandchild. He revealed there is also some correlation between hearing loss and dementia. “Retaining a good level of hearing keeps the brain switched on and sharp, promoting better memory and balance, as well as helping to keep an individual engaged with those around them.”

Hearing assessments are free at any Sussex Audiology clinic and involve a visual inspection from a consultant, a hearing test with the latest diagnostic equipment and then full analysis of the results, provided with accurate and relevant advice. Sometimes the hearing of an individual is absolutely fine but a build up of wax in the auditory canal has created problems. The Sussex Audiology experts were keen to assert the fact that sometimes the worst thing a person can do is use a cotton bud to clean their ears,

because the bud might push the wax up against the eardrum rather than removing it. But do not fear because Sussex Audiology Clinics offer microsuction. “We believe we’re the only clinic in Sussex that offers this service,” noted Ben, who was also keen to tell me that wax is naturally occurring and is actually good for the ear. It catches dust, lubricates the ear, kills bacteria and protects the eardrum. It also naturally drains out of the ear. Good hearing may be taken for granted by most of us, but we may also be unaware if the quality of our hearing starts to deteriorate. If the ease of communication with other people starts to become harder, it may lead to early forms of social isolation and make it a more demanding task to maintain relationships. The impact on families, friends and colleagues shouldn’t be ignored. When it comes to good hearing and a good patient journey, then it’s best to listen to the expert advice available at a Sussex Audiology Centre. l Sussex Audiology 17-19 Montefiore Road, Hove BN3 1RD Nuffield Hospital, Burrell Road, Haywards Heath RH16 1UD 313 Goring Road, Goring-by-Sea BN12 4NX 01273 778977 01903 243300 info@sussexaudiologycentre.co.uk January 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 37

The house is shielded from the road by gabions, and also a number of pine trees, which are protected under a tree preservation order. The façade is given lively visual interest thanks to its different angles and materials – the deep overhangs are also there to prevent overheating inside

elocating for a new job was the simple reason that led Sam Cartwright and James Heath to move to the south coast, but they weren’t expecting to build the distinctive, modern fourstorey, low-energy dwelling they now find themselves living in. Having adored their Georgian home in Manchester, their sights were originally set on a fantastic period property in Brighton

and Hove, where Sam had a new position at the local university. In a city known for its handsome squares and Regency villas, in theory, they should have been spoilt for choice. But nothing they viewed within their budget quite matched up to what they had in their previous home. “We couldn’t find anything as nice as our place in Manchester, so we decided, rather than settle for something not quite good enough, let’s do something completely different. Let’s go modern. Let’s build something,” said Sam. 44 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2022

With the clock ticking on her new job starting, the couple found a dormer bungalow in a good location in Hove that definitely wasn’t love at first sight, but had the potential to be something really special. “Sam’s requirement was for a good-sized garden; mine was for a garage. This had both,” explained James. STARTING FROM SCRATCH Having moved in, they began to think about what the possibilities were for the house’s future. “We moved down and within a few months we had interviewed nine or 10 architects, and they almost all agreed that the best thing to do was knock it down and start again rather than adding extra floors and extending,” said Sam. They invited two of those to work up some ideas for a four-bed, 250 square metre contemporary home: in terms of style, Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld’s Schröder House, an icon of the 1920s modern movement, was one of the references that the couple cited as the kind of thing they liked. KITCHEN The couple’s joiner worked wonders making all the cabinetry fit around some of the kitchen’s odd angles. For example, the island is a funnel shape – the cabinetry was off the peg, and the joiner made it fit before a granite company came to cut the wrap-around worktop in the right shape

James himself took more of a hand in designing the house, creating a cardboard model and handing it over to one of the architects

Closer look: EXTERNAL BLINDS

Overheating is always a danger when building a highly insulated home with large south-facing windows, and Sam and James’s passive house expert expressed concern that their house could get roasting hot. In summer, the balconies and overhangs at the front of the house (which is south facing) help protect the inside from the worst of it, but in spring and autumn, when the sun is lower, there was a real danger of overheating. Guided by the Passive House Institute’s Passive House Planning Package (essentially a complex spreadsheet used to calculate the energy efficiency of a building), it was decided to make some of the windows smaller, while some windows had external blinds added. The blinds are made from woven nylon mesh and automatically close when there’s a danger of overheating, but can also be overridden at the touch of a button inside. Thanks to this intervention, the initial fears that the house could get too hot have thankfully proved unfounded.

A large roof terrace is accessed off the ‘belvedere’, a room at the top of the house. The solar PV and solar thermal panels are housed on the terrace and roof

ATRIUM/HALLWAY The hallway is large, light-filled and dramatic, with timber clad steel staircases running at perpendicular angles. James, an engineer, came up with the idea for the staircases, inspired by the work of artist MC Escher

In the end, James himself took more of a hand in designing the house, creating a cardboard model and handing it over to one of the architects, who finessed it and added some interest to the front facade. By this time, the project’s ambitions were getting bigger: James was in the process of selling his business, and this meant that both the budget and the scale of the project could be pushed further. The possibility of building an annexe for James’s dad, who has Alzheimer’s and needed a greater level of care, also entered the picture. The plans were initially rejected, with objections filed from neighbours about the size and character of the house – but under the local authority’s rules, the case had to go to committee because there had been so many

expressions of support to counter the objections. The plans were eventually passed, with the fact that this was going to be a highly energy efficient home for three generations working in their favour. “One of the objections was that it was too modern, but if you look around, there’s no vernacular around here. There isn’t a style to fit in with,” recalled Sam. GOING PASSIVE With planning secured, the project went on the back burner for at least a year while James continued commuting to Manchester and had his head down working on the transition period as his company was handed over. When the time was right, the couple started to think about how they were going to get their plans out of the ground. Having decided on a passive house approach, they appointed a building designer that specialised in this type of build, Jim

Miller, who could deliver the expertise they needed in low-energy buildings. A few elements were tweaked to ensure that the building could work as a passive house, such as reducing the size of some of the windows and adding automatic external blinds, both measures to reduce overheating.

They almost all agreed that the best thing to do was knock it down and start again

It was Jim who suggested building using a factory-built closed-frame timber system. “I kind of felt more comfortable with blockwork,” said James, “but it is harder to get it air-tight to passive house standards. This looked like a cost-effective, predictable way of getting something built.” MASTER BATHROOM The master bedroom’s ensuite is shared with daughter Georgina’s bedroom. It’s a big room, and James and Sam have arranged the plumbing so it can be split down the middle when Georgina gets older. When the lights are turned on, both doors automatically lock. The basin vanity unit is an antique cabinet bought from eBay

We learned…

• Have you really got time to do this? We both worked part-time during the build and it was still so, so hard. • James is an engineer by profession, and I don’t know how we would have managed without that knowledge. • Plan, plan and plan some more! Pick your door knobs, plan your kitchen, decide on door heights – even before you’ve started digging foundations. You will thank yourself for it. • Put your laundry room upstairs. It’s where you make all of your laundry!

Sam and James contracted a building company on a cost-plus basis: instead of giving them a fixed-price quote, the builder handed over all the receipts and labour costs every two weeks, and the couple paid him that figure plus a fixed percentage of those costs. This kind of contract requires a good deal of trust between builder and homeowner – the worst-case scenario is that there is no incentive for the contractor to get the job done on time and on budget, but in this case it worked perfectly, and the relationship was rocksolid throughout the process. “I think it got us the build we wanted, at the quality we wanted, not too over the top, but not cutting corners and MASTER BEDROOM A serene white and grey colour scheme has been used in the master bedroom

This looked like a cost-effective, predictable way of getting something built

GUEST BEDROOM The south-facing guest bedroom has a balcony that creates a deep overhang, as well as automatic external blinds – both measures to avoid overheating

at a reasonable price without too much stress.” Where it made sense, James also took a few of the really big costs out of the builders hands to avoid paying the additional percentage, such as the fabrication of the timberclad steel stairs, which run perpendicular to one another, rising up through the atrium as you walk in the door which is one of the house’s undeniable highlights. ROOM FOR EVERYONE The scale of the house is impressive, with James’s dad’s self-contained flat on the ground floor, along with a guest bedroom and a plant-room/workshop. The first floor consists of

an entirely open-plan U-shaped space which houses the kitchen, dining area and two living areas. The next floor has the main bedrooms and finally at the top of the house a space that the couple call the belvedere which is used as a hobby room for James and the couple’s daughter Georgina and enjoys sea views in the distance. The belvedere steps out on to a terrace where there is an array of solar thermal and PV panels. The solar thermal provides sufficient hot water (stored in a 1,500-litre tank) between about March and October, while the living room’s 10kW Firepower woodburner has a back boiler, with 8kW feeding into the hot water system and 2kW used for heating the room. A small gas boiler acts as a back-up to these options. FINISHING OFF & TAKING STOCK Snagging issues with the mechanical and electrical systems took much longer than the couple would have wanted, with James pouring his own time into fixing them, using his experience as an engineer to sort everything out. He also took the lead on programming the house’s SmartThings home automation system, which controls the lighting, blinds and the heating too. Sam is adamant that she wouldn’t self-build again on account of how stressful the whole process was. “It was utterly exhausting. The whole build was full-on, but in the last few months, every waking minute that we weren’t at work, we were making decisions that I knew I was ill-equipped to make. It’s not an experience I’d wish to repeat but thankfully nothing went catastrophically wrong.” The couple admit that it took a while for the house to feel like home, but that shouldn’t detract from the fantastic end result. Light, spacious and superefficient, it has a high-quality finish and some daring design features. It’s also packed with practical elements that have obviously been very thoroughly thought through to simplify and streamline everyday life. Things such as having the washer and drier on the same floor as the bedrooms, so there’s no need to lug laundry up and down the stairs, or the way the doors automatically lock when the light goes on in the bathroom. Now that the stress of the build is over, Sam and James still have the odd issue to deal with, but thankfully they have diminished to a much more manageable scale – like how to get Marshmallow the cat to use their special, high-tech passive house cat-flap. l Photos: Bruce Hemming Text: Emily Brooks

It’s time to start thinking smart about our homes. Tailor your home to your needs and help to combat the climate crisis as well; Sara Whatley gives you some suggestions how

LOOK SMART, ACT SMART

T

he modern smart homes don’t just look smart, they act smart too. The phrase ‘smart home’ refers to a home that is using the latest technology to improve it and in some cases, make it more environmentally friendly as well. We are going to look at both automated smart homes that can be remotely controlled through our smart phones or tablets, and also smart homes which use technology to help protect the environment, a very urgent issue which we all need to take into account. CONNECTED HOMES Do you ever worry that you have left the oven on, forgotten to record your favourite programme, or realised you’re

on your way home early and want it to be toasty warm when you get through the front door? No problem with an automated smart home. All electronics in your home can be connected to your devices (smart phone or tablet) through a home network and at your command you can control them remotely. The ‘Internet Of Things’ (IOT) is the phrase you need to know here, which describes physical objects and products that are embedded with sensors, chips or other technologies that can all speak to each other and exchange data through digital networks. There may be an initial outlay of expense in setting up an automated smart home but in the long run it could help cut down your bills with some energy efficiency savings. For example, cookers can be programmed to switch off when not attended, bath water shut off if overflowing, a reminder to take medications could be set up, even an alert system sent to the hospital if the resident falls. Some people will be put off by all the fiddly technology and if this sort of home will cost you more in time and energy then it’s probably not for you. But if you do want to give it a go then start small and build up. SMART HOME PRODUCTS The other type of smart home is not the automated kind, but one filled with eco friendly smart home products, which use the latest technology to help protect the environment and improve our homes in one fell swoop. These homes are smart in terms of producing less pollution, using less of

our planet’s resources and consequently saving us more money. Again, brilliant news to help keep the cost of those rising bills down. Although one must keep in mind the initial cost of investing and improving our homes in this way, once it is done the outlay should be recouped within a few years. And if it’s a new build or refurbishment then the potential extra cost of incorporating these technologies will only be a small percentage on top of the existing cost.

There are large improvements that can be made, such as installing a geothermal or ground source heat pump. These types of heating systems take advantage of the earth’s natural ability to store heat in the ground. In winter the earth can be used as a heat source and in summer as a heat sink. This is a clean way to heat buildings and produces no carbon emissions. It is also very safe, easy to maintain, space saving and although there is a bigger initial cost than combustion based heating systems, in the long run they should save money. Another large upgrade is to consider going green – literally green! A green or living roof is a great way to insulate our homes, again reducing energy costs, and they can help to manage large rain downfalls too, retaining the water and absorbing it into the plants. Other benefits include cleaner air and a unique and beautiful look for the building. There are also many smaller home improvements to be made utilising green technology. Eco friendly paint is one, or how about smart eco flooring options? These include cork, bamboo, reclaimed rubber made from tyres or for those that prefer something softer underfoot how about an eco friendly wool carpet or one made from other natural fibres such as jute, sisal and coir. P.E.T Polyester

carpets are also sustainable and durable, and made from recycled plastic cartons and bottles. Even if it’s just one small thing you upgrade around your home to adopt a greener living space, give LED light bulbs a go. More efficient, longer lasting, versatile and durable, and only a little more expensive than traditional light bulbs, it’s an investment worth making. After all, we are investing not only in our homes, but in the future of our planet too. l

LEGAL EXPERTISE & a Culture of Care After a decade serving the Mid Sussex area, Lisa de Silva explores the reasons behind Tisshaws’ continued success

E

stablished by Gilva Tisshaw in 2012, Tisshaws is now the largest family law firm in Mid-Sussex, with a coveted reputation for legal expertise and professional integrity. Built on a philosophy of care, Gilva and her likeminded team treat clients with levels of empathy and understanding often lacking elsewhere. Recently shortlisted for Resolution’s Resilience Award 2021, Gilva was praised for her ‘commendable support for clients, staff and the local community’, throughout the pandemic. As Tisshaws goes from strength to strength, we uncover the reasons behind the firm’s success.

Tisshaws have a wealth of experience and legal expertise to draw upon

A LOCAL FIRM

Gilva has worked in Haywards Heath for 25 years and her team all have a thorough knowledge of the local area. This means they know and understand the local housing market and neighbourhood schools, so can negotiate your divorce from a position of strength.

OUTSTANDING CLIENT SERVICE

Tisshaws guarantee their clients exceptional standards of service and have been awarded the Law Society’s Lexcel accreditation for the 9th year running. This recognises excellence in practice management and client care. Tisshaws have also retained their ranking as one of the UK’s top 500 law firms by The Legal 500, an assessment based on independent research and feedback from clients and the legal profession. HIGH LEVELS OF PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

The firm is proud that much of their work comes through personal

The depth and breadth of their experience means they can represent clients with a broad range of assets, from those with small budgets, right through to those with significant financial assets and properties abroad.

recommendation from both past and existing clients, as well as those working in the legal profession. The team understand the distress of separation and divorce and are warm, understanding, and quick to respond to queries. SPECIALIST FAMILY LAW FIRM

Unlike many legal firms, Tisshaws only work in family law, meaning they have a wealth of experience and legal expertise to draw upon.

COMMITTED TO NONCOURT RESOLUTION OF FAMILY BREAKDOWN

Going to court is stressful, costly and time consuming, so Tisshaws always offer clients alternative ways to resolve their issues. These include mediation, collaborative law and arbitration. The team, which includes two mediators and four collaborative lawyers, are all members of

Resolution, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving family matters. PROUD TO BE INCLUSIVE

Tisshaws have experience in dealing with the planning of families, surrogacy, and coparenting law, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, so they can help the widest range of clients possible. COMPETITIVE RATES

While their clients receive the service and expertise of a larger London firm, Tisshaws keep their fees highly competitive, offering an initial one-hour consultation for a fixed fee of £50 (inc. VAT). This gives prospective clients the time and opportunity to receive legal advice specific to their situation. l Tisshaws Family Law Solicitors 3 Hazelgrove Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 3PH

BLOOMING TIMES

Plant catalogues can be a bewildering read, particularly for the novice gardener. Never fear – Flo Whitaker’s horticultural translation service is here to help guide you through the marketing jargon

WHAT’S IT ALL J About?

ust when you’ve finished declogging your letterbox of forlorn Christmas cards sent by vaguely-recalled people you haven’t seen for over 20 years, brace yourself for the deluge of plastic charity donation sacks that are about to start landing on your mat with the unerring accuracy of a cruise missile. “Your local penguin rehoming/hippo hospice/unicorn petting zoo needs your unwanted Christmas tat!” As if that wasn’t bad enough, ‘tis also the season for the aspirational lifestyle plant catalogue – expect an avalanche of those at any moment. These glossy

publications, promising perfect, stressfree, low-maintenance gardens are invariably illustrated with people who have clearly never done a day’s gardening in their lives, (check the ultra-clean manicured fingernails) and ‘curated’ by wordsmiths employing vocabulary so upbeat that it borders on mild hysteria. But what does all

the wordage mean? It seldom tells you anything about the plants. Allow me to translate some of the most frequently used phrases. I make no apology for the over-use of the exclamation mark. Examination of any plant catalogue will show the little blighters cropping up like ground elder. Tsk! (Oh, look - there’s another one…) l

“Produces a vigorous upright column of foliage!” Translation: Will root into the gutters.

“Elegant, statuesque habit.” Translation: Blows over.

“Stunningly vibrant blooms!” Translation: Sunglasses recommended. “Reliably hardy in mild winters!” Translation: Unless you live on the Isles of Scilly – forget it.

“Our carefully selected plant collections!” Translation: We’ve done a deal with a Dutch nursery and screwed the wholesale price down so hard that our supplier is only prepared to despatch the inferior varieties that no-one else wants. “Extremely rare!” Translation: A plant so utterly hideous and lacking in merit, commercial cultivation of it ceased years ago. “Produces a vigorous trailing cascade of foliage!” Translation: Will root into the gaps between the paving.

“A consistently reliable performer!” Translation: No matter how many applications of weedkiller you chuck on this plant, it will always return with a vengeance. “We have spent ten years building up sufficient stocks to make this plant available!” Translation: 99% of seedlings get mildew and die.

“Ground-hugging, compact habit.” Translation: We’ve tried breeding the ugly, dwarfing genes out of this plant, but haven’t succeeded.” “Guaranteed 100% reliable.” Translation: Tediously boring. “Blooms non-stop!” Translation: Like an opinionated, drunk relative that won’t shut up or go home, this impolite plant outstays its welcome and refuses to go dormant or die off gracefully. No-one wants to look at a luminous pink frilly begonia in January. Bah!

“Extremely prolific!” Translation: So is typhoid – but you wouldn’t want that either. “Your neighbours will be amazed!” Translation: Your neighbours will put their house up for sale and move to an address where they don’t require a machete to find their front door.

EDUCATION

Run, Play, Learn Encouraging children to play outdoors in nature can teach them about the environment and the importance of looking after the world we live in for future generations. Sara Whatley gets her wellies on and gets outside!

C

hildren naturally love playing outdoors. It gives them space to physically move fast and freely, be loud and expressive and have time to explore and be messy – perfect fun for young ones! Through playing outdoors in nature children are also learning about the environment and with a few additions, they can learn about the possibilities of recycling as well. Unleashing children outdoors when they have been inside for a while can be like opening a box of springs – off they go wildly zigzagging in all directions, their little feet skipping and jumping as they run. Allowing free outdoor play is vital to let children burn off energy,

develop gross and fine motor skills and enjoy the feeling of moving their bodies, which will serve them well all through their lives and help to keep them healthy. Many schools now have access to forest schools, which provide a variety of different habitats for children to enjoy. They can be based in wooded areas, but also in grassland, parks with trees, and even rivers or

beaches. Exposing children to these different habitats introduces them to the various varieties of plant and animal life that reside there, and also helps their understanding of the biodiversity of nature. Forest schools and dedicated outdoor nature play areas provide children with safe, non-judgemental areas where they may feel able to express themselves more freely away from the traditional classroom setting. These spaces also provide children with risk taking opportunities, something that stretches further than just physical risk but taps into strengthening selfsufficiency, confidence and self-esteem. This may be achieved through problem solving – crossing bridges or building a den; playing group games and engaging in selfexploration. If possible, provide children with different play zones such as space to run, jump, hide and swing, which will cater to

76 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2022

Exposing children to different habitats helps their understanding of the biodiversity of nature their physical side. Pushing each other on the swing, or pulling each other around in a cart will also help children build their social skills. A constructive play area such as a water wall, a mud kitchen, sandpit and a structure with walls, a roof and window will help them tap into their imaginations. The possibilities are endless with a building structure – are they in the doctor’s, a shop, a rocket or a farm? This is the area where recycling can be used too. Recycled tyres could be turned into horse jumps, tunnels or swings. A water wall could be built using an old pallet and attaching a series of cut open

bottles and containers turned upside down to make them into funnels and attaching old hosepipe to the ends to direct the flow of water. Children will love pouring water into the top funnels, watching it flow down and catching it at the bottom, ready to be poured back into the top again! Getting out in all weathers and seasons is important too and helps children learn about the seasons, the weather and looking after ourselves in different conditions. Sunscreen and hats must be worn in sunny weather and warm woollies and coats in winter. Creating little projects at home can be a good way to encourage spending time outdoors too. How about building a worm farm with your little ones? Use an old bottle or any transparent container that can have drainage holes in the bottom and a cover to prevent escapee worms and drenching from rainwater. Layer soil and sand or shredded paper to make it visually interesting and children will enjoy seeing the worms mix the layers together as they burrow. Feed the worms with plant-based food scraps (no meat or dairy) and teach children how these amazing composters turn our waste into beautiful food for

the garden. Finding the correct worms to fill your worm farm may be the most fun and challenging part of the project. Common garden worms are longer and pink and will burrow down deeper into the earth. Composting worms, the ones you want in your farm, are shorter and redder in colour and live closer to the surface of the earth. It may take a little while to fill your worm farm but hunting out the worms will be great fun for the kids! l

mma, a designer, husband Graham and son Finn were living in a rented house when they spotted their current home on the same street, so they knew exactly what to expect. “This house was almost exactly a mirror image of the one we were living in four doors down,” said Emma. “So, I thought we would know exactly what to do to make it work for us.” However, the couple ended up living in the house for a year before starting the renovations and found that one change led to another. “Replacing the main staircase meant reconfiguring the bathroom, plus masses of extra insulation in the roof meant we had to have paddle stairs up to the top floor…” Emma explained. “In the end, we didn’t do anything we had planned to!” Despite not sticking to their original plans, it was a pretty efficient renovation. while a team of builders, which were headed up by Emma’s Dad, a retired builder himself moved in. Emma and her Dad project-managed the building work and in six weeks the team had fitted a new staircase, replaced the roof including fitting a dormer to create space for an en-suite bathroom for Finn. They also built extensive bespoke storage for Graham’s photography equipment in the spare room, replaced the family bathroom, and extended the kitchen into the side-return. The first job was the main staircase. “We wanted new stairs, because the original ones were just too steep,” explained Emma. But altering the staircase meant re-configuring the family bathroom to generate the necessary space. They took the

Emma’s dad advised them to add insulation not only to the roof but also to every external wall opportunity to replace everything and create a light, bright family bathroom. A dormer in the roof created enough space for an en-suite bathroom alongside Finn’s bedroom. “We decided to let Finn have that room, so when he has friends over he takes them up there and we’ve still got the rest of the house,” she laughed. Emma’s dad advised them to add insulation not only to the roof but also to every external wall, since being a Victorian house, the property doesn’t have cavity walls. This meant losing three inches around the edge of each room, and compromising on paddle stairs (space saving stairs) going up to Finn’s room, but Emma said it was worth it, “We hardly ever have to heat the upstairs of the house because it is just so warm,” she added. Once the top floor was done, the builders moved downstairs to the spare room on the first floor. “We call it the Mother Cupboard,” laughed Emma. “Partly because it’s where my mother stays when she visits, but mostly because it is one mother of a cupboard! There is as much storage as you could possible fit in there – it’s basically a garage in a spare room form.” Graham and Emma both planned to work from home and

KITCHEN The steel-frame double-glazed extension in the kitchen has transformed this previously dark area into a light, welcoming family space – and doubled its width

It has made a massive difference, we have doubled the size of the kitchen

while Emma now has an office with friends in Lewes, Graham stores all of his photography equipment in this room. The final project in this speedy renovation was the kitchen. “We had inherited a 1980s kitchen which was tiny, dangerous and horrible,” said Emma. “You could stand in the middle and touch the two opposite walls at the same time.” By extending the kitchen to fill the side return and using extensive glazing, they created a spacious, light-filled, family kitchen. “It has made a massive difference, we have doubled the size of the kitchen,” she declared. “And the glass extension means that the whole of the downstairs is so much lighter.” From start to finish, the whole project took just six weeks. Graham was working in New York for five of the six weeks, and Emma stayed in a

local holiday cottage with Finn, so she was able to keep an eye on the progress with daily visits. “It honestly wasn’t that stressful,” she insisted. “I loved seeing everything stripped totally bare, so you could see the shell of the house, but my favourite moment was Graham’s reaction when he got back from New York. I think he was quite impressed!” She does admit there was one tense situation when a neighbour got stuck behind the concrete lorry on their culde-sac. “The glass extension was being put up at the back and the concrete was arriving for the floor all on the same day, so it was already quite a stressful day,” she remembered. “Then we trapped a neighbour’s car, who needed to collect her son from school, on the wrong side of the concrete lorry so it couldn’t move. Luckily my car was on the right side of the lorry, so we found a solution.” Inspired by a love of colour and mid-century design, the interior came together quite naturally – with a little help from the Pinterest. “I think this was when I first fell in love with Pinterest – I put together a ‘house’ mood board and immediately started to see patterns, such as certain colours, emerging,” said Emma. “Graham and I have always been quite flamboyant with colour. We both went to art school, so perhaps

HALLWAY This bold statement rug gives the hallway a playful vibrancy

we’ve been inspired by the artists we admire. I am a massive Alexander Calder fan and he uses a lot of primary colours – and I also love Alexander Girard and, of course, Charles and Ray Eames.” The vision for the space was Emma’s but Graham did have some input, such as choosing the yellow for the stairs and the mango orange for the kitchen cupboards. “I let him choose two colours,” she laughed, “but I’ve got to hand it to him – they are pretty good colours.” Predominantly white walls provide a backdrop for midcentury furniture and a colourful collection of art and personal objects that are displayed throughout the house. The couple’s existing dining table provided a starting point, soon enhanced by the 1960s teak display unit, which was a lucky find online at just £400, that turned out to be the Danish PS System. “The whole scheme was designed around our dining room table, because we are a family that sits at the table rather than in the lounge,” explained Emma. “That is where we entertain, where we work, where I host a craft night once a week – it’s a cliché, but it really is the heart of our home.” Emma bought basic kitchen cabinets and commissioned a local carpenter to make the doors, which she painted bright orange. “The kitchen floor stayed concrete for ages, because we didn’t know what to do with it,” said Emma. “But luckily, we live next door to the principle of the Inchbald School of Design, and he said, ‘You’ve got to go with teal!’ so teal lino it was!” Now that the whirlwind renovation is complete, what does the family make of their colourful home? “What I love about our house is it is incredibly welcoming,” said Emma. “Nothing is hidden – it’s all very open. Everybody knows where everything is, so they can just relax and help themselves. It’s a really inviting friendly house.” Not bad for six weeks’ work. l Words: Katie Treggiden Photography: Bruce Hemming Styling: Sally Maton

HISTORY

THE GLYNDE SCHOOL

for Lady Gardeners A century ago, the prospect of middle-class women gardening was unconventional, but in the village of Glynde a quiet revolution was taking place, as Lindsey Tydeman from The Keep explains

T

he year is 1916, and Britain has been at war for two years. The ladies in this photograph (ref LUS/1/1/5/6) obviously feel as though they are contributing to the war effort, but the viewer could be forgiven for wondering how, exactly? The clues are in the trowel, forks, broom and spade. They are the students of Viscountess Frances Wolseley’s College for Lady Gardeners in the village of Glynde, near Lewes, and in 1916 the quasimilitary uniform was very much part of the job.

Viscountess Frances Wolseley, with George Funnel and John Levett (right), two men from the local lime pits, 1901 (ref LUS/1/1/5/2)

Frances Wolseley (18721936) was never a suffragette but neither did she pine for a husband and children. The gardening bug had taken hold in 1901, when her mother employed a female gardener and two students to work at ‘Farmhouse’, the house which the family were renting in Glynde after her father’s retirement from the army. Frances began supervising their work, and, a year later, issued the prospectus for the ‘The Glynde School for Lady Gardeners’. It was a bold step. The concept of a middle-class woman not only designing

a garden but working the soil herself was still unconventional. But pupils of the right type applied and in 1906 she rented over five acres of land on the edge of the village at the base of Mount Caburn – Ragged Lands – and built a house, sheds and garden. Bemused men from local lime pits were recruited to landscape the chalk banks and create terraces, arbours and pergolas. It was going to be an Italianate garden. The Long Walk was festooned with roses, and, as one walked gently downhill, the Ouse river valley and Downs provided a beautiful backdrop. In 1913 one of the school’s more dynamic pupils, Elsa More, was taken on as forewoman. She ran the garden as a naval institution, calling the school ‘HMS Ragged’ and raising and lowering the flag on the roof each morning and evening. Students took the salute with their implements on their shoulders and saluted again before discussing individual progress reports. The correct uniform was enforced, even down to underwear. No corsets here, but, in Frances Wolseley’s words, ‘a plain fitting flannel belt to cover the waist and abdomen… worn next to the skin, whether the usual underwear be merino or not.’ Frances moved out of Ragged Lands in 1918, leaving Elsa More in charge,

The house and garden from the south, the ‘Long Walk’, with students. Viscountess Frances Wolsely stands in front of house, c 1910 (LUS/1/1/1/30)

She ran the garden as a naval institution, calling the school HMS Ragged and retired to Ardingly. In her absence the college continued until 1933 when the final educational seeds were sown. Frances bequeathed her large collection of books on horticulture to The Wolseley Room at Hove Library and is

commemorated today by the Ardingly village sign. These unique images are from the extensive Lusted family archive featuring Glynde village life. They can be viewed at The Keep in the Reference Room. Ragged Lands by Diana Crook (Dale House Press, Lewes, 2002), a brief account of the school, is also available in our Reference Room. l For more information visit www.thekeep/info

Storrington Walk

WALK

New Year, new location, new walk, same old writer… Robert Veitch travelled to Storrington and uncovered a gem that gets 2022 off to a fabulous start!

F

rom North Street car park exit, turn left and walk towards Storrington High Street. At the T-junction, turn right and then turn left immediately after, into Church Street. Look up to the heights of the horizon from where the distant line of leafless trees begins to beckon. Continue past the Parish Church of St Mary Storrington, which has its foundations in the 11th century. Beyond the traffic island Church Street evolves into Greyfriars Lane and the initial, gentle ascent of the Downs commences. As the road starts to narrow, keep right at the first fork, then right again at the second fork, slightly further on. The gradient increases just a twinkle as the road degrades to a track, eventually arriving at a T-junction by a 3-way fingerpost adorned with a hydrant sign. Turn left onto the footpath and the scarp

slope proper. After 200m, bear right at the solitary fingerpost and then turn left immediately, passing the leaning tree on the way up the staircase of tree roots. As the gradient ramps up, working the legs, lungs and heart rate, those memories of Christmas parties, dinners, St Parish Church of on Mary, Storringt

presents, and celebrations will be left behind and seem ever so distant as you ascend the first Sussex Living climb of the year. Beyond the pair of fallen tree trunks, the gradient eases and the landscape opens up. Arriving at the 4-way fingerpost you will have climbed 122m (400ft) in half a mile at an average of 15% or 1:7 in old money – the toughest part of the walk is done, so pause and enjoy the view west beyond Amberley and Duncton towards Petersfield.

Turn left, and the slope becomes progressively easier on the way to the trig point that marks the summit of Kithurst Hill, which at 213m (699 feet) is the high point of the day. If the weather is generous, the panorama to the south encompasses a glorious array from Worthing to Littlehampton and Selsey Bill.

Look up to the heights of the horizon from where the distant line of leafless trees begins to beckon Continue for another 100m to the 3-way fingerpost, before turning right and downhill to the junction with the South Downs Way. Turn left and continue through the car park, passing the Chantry Post along the way to a metal barrier and a wooden 5-bar gate. Follow the lines in the grass over the brow, but not

the summit, of Sullington Hill, then down the other side towards the barn. Take the gate beside the cattle grid, then the gate beyond the barn. Keep to the left in the field, along the barbed wire boundary, respecting any livestock that may be present. It’s almost ½ a mile up to the summit of Barnsfarm Hill by the gate at 205m (673 feet). Once through the gate, walk a further 250m to the 3-way fingerpost, where the summit of Chanctonbury Ring across the valley to the east seems within touching distance. Turn left and north to begin the return journey.

The panorama to the south encompasses a glorious array Storrington is nearby to the northwest, while the North Downs might also be visible, over 25 miles away. Walk between the lines of stock-proof fencing, then along the chalk pathway as the altitude slips away bit by bit. Bear left at the 2-way fingerpost, then soon after, follow the tarmac between the trees of Rowdell Holt East and West to the bottom of the hill, by the farm. Just after the telegraph

pole on the right and laurel on the left, turn left at the 3-way fingerpost, and follow the bridleway, westwards. Though a little squelchy in places, it’s mostly level walking alongside open fields with the Downs providing a picturesque backdrop. After ½ a mile there is a 5-bar gate, beyond which are buildings and a beech hedge. Once around the 90° right hand bend there’s a 3-way fingerpost. Turn left and continue between the parallel lines of trees to the gate. Cross the training gallops with care and continue along the path all the way to the farm buildings

and church at Sullington. St. Mary’s Church has stood for almost a millennia. The yew in the churchyard dates from the 7th century, under which there is a seat to pause upon and contemplate the scenery. Bear left at the church and continue in the same westerly direction for almost ½ a mile, before the path snaps left and dips downhill past two gates to the junction with Chantry Lane and the sound of falling water. Turn right and follow the tarmac for ¾ mile to the junction with the A283. At the main road, cross with

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

THE

EIGHT BELLS HAWKHURST

Crowned Britain’s Best Roast Dinner

THE EIGHT BELLS IN HAWKHURST has been named the proud winner of the Best Meat Roast Dinner in Knorr® Professional’s Great British Roast Dinner Competition. The competition seeks to recognise the very best roast dinners served across the UK and to honour the professional chefs who work hard to create them. Winners were decided by an esteemed judging panel and finalists were scored based on quality, service, cleanliness, value for money, presentation – and, of course, most importantly taste. The Eight Bells Country Pub and Kitchen is fantastic 18th century pub sitting on the beautiful Moor in Hawkhurst. Recently

taken over by James and Annie Rogers, the pub prides itself on seasonal, fresh, ‘rustic country’ food for lunch and dinner. The winning roast dinner was a magnificent roast rump of local beef served with all the trimmings. Reacting to their win, James Rogers, Head Chef and Owner said: “It’s a real honour to have our roast recognised in this way. We’re hugely passionate about using the best quality ingredients, local where possible and always seasonal and fresh. We cook our meat at regular intervals throughout Sunday service, to ensure that

every customer gets a fresh cut from lunch through to the evening.” James added: “We also have a fantastic team of chefs and front of house staff, who are as passionate about great food and brilliant service as I am. We look after them, feed them and renumerate them well – it’s simple really, and it means that they respect you and will stay with you for the longer term.” Announcing the winner, Senior Marketing Manager for Knorr® Professional, Kate Drew, said: “This year the competition saw an exceptionally high standard of entries from establishments all across the UK. Winning the title of Britain’s Best Meat Roast is an incredible achievement and a testament to the work that the team at The Eight Bells have clearly put in to serving an outstanding roast dinner.”

Before the advent of computer games, we British kept ourselves amused with more home-spun hobbies, sports and pastimes – many of which centred around the local pub. Peter d’Aguilar explores a few examples with traditional links to the Sussex area

too distant past, league matches played between local pubs were very popular and very social, but with fewer pubs there are fewer leagues. Locally, there are many other games involving darts and a dartboard that remain popular; including; round the clock, killer, halve it and golf. It is believed that darts originated in medieval times when bored soldiers would amuse themselves between battles by throwing the stubs of arrows or crossbow bolts at a target on a tree. The modern form of the game dates back to Lancashire in 1896. l

Each game is timed to last for 15 to 20 minutes after which a bar drops to prevent potted balls being returned to play. Once the remaining balls are potted the game is over and the winner is the player with the most points. As the game is only played from one end of the table, a bar billiards table requires far less space than a traditional pool table. Competitive bar billiards leagues exist in Sussex and the world championship takes place each November on the island of Jersey. Male players from Sussex have claimed the title ten times since its’ inception in 1981. l

TOAD IN THE HOLE There aren’t many parts of the county where it’s legal to toss a toad into a hole, but in others it’s a serious pastime

A

nother traditional game that used to be popular around the pubs of Sussex is Toad in the Hole, also known in some parts of the county as Dumps. As a more refined version of the coin-throwing game Pitch Penny, it involves tossing four brass coins or ‘toads’ at a square lead-topped wooden table with a hole in the middle, from a distance of about 8 feet, often from the oche used in darts. Its popularity waned with the advent of darts, as the toad table took up slightly more room and reduced available pub space for customers. If a toad goes straight down the hole it scores 2 points, or 1 point if it lands cleanly on the table without hitting the back. If it hits the back of the table or falls off, it Scoring is is void. It is therefore possible performed in a to score a grand total of eight similar fashion to points per turn. Scoring is performed in a similar darts, counting fashion to darts, counting down from 31 down from 31. The first side to reach 0 wins the game. The first competitor throws two toads, with their opponent then throwing three. From then on, they both throw all four. Like darts, players must finish on the exact score required – scoring too many results in the player being ‘bust’. At tournament level, participants play best of three, and best of five in the final. The only known league in the UK is based in East Sussex, consisting of three divisions and roughly twenty teams from pubs around the county. Lewes Lions Club did run an international Toad in the Hole competition until the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted proceedings. l

CRIBBAGE Find a friend, nip down the pub, order a drink, open up a deck of cards and welcome to the enduring world of cribbage

O

riginating in the seventeenth century, cribbage is recognised as one of the best and most enduring two-handed card games, combining both luck and skill. Its invention is attributed to English poet, soldier, and general ne’er-do-well Sir John Suckling. One of

its most notable features is the cribbage board, which uses pegs for keeping score; a quicker and more accurate alternative to the usual pencil and paper. While other combinations are possible, cribbage is generally considered to be at its best when

played by two people, using a standard 52-card pack. The cards rank from Kings (high) to Aces (low). It involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. The highest possible hand in cribbage is 29 – the perfect cribbage hand. While the rules are relatively few, its unique scoring system, subtle tactics and strategic variations have given it the status of Britain’s national card game – and it’s the only one that’s legally playable on licensed premises The rules of without cribbage are requiring simple to learn but local

authority permission. Cribbage features in The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens. It is said that the rules of cribbage are simple to learn but can take a lifetime to master. It also features a range of interesting jargon – pone (opponent), nineteen hand (zero points), muggins or cutthroat (a way of stealing points) – not to mention skunk, one for his nob and two for his heels! l

CHARITY

Moving Generosity

Last summer St Peter & St James Hospice relocated their distribution centre from North Chailey to a new location in Hurstpierpoint as Robert Veitch recently discovered

T

he previous distribution centre was located at the hospice in North Chailey but became too small to cope with the volume of donations being received. The move to new premises in Hurstpierpoint has provided much needed space and better accessibility for donations to be made and processed. As Emily Cronin, the Head of Trading at St Peter & St James Hospice pointed out, “We’ve gone from 1,000 square feet of space to 12,000 square feet.” Walking around the premises it’s clear to see the increased space is well used and that there is plenty of room to run an efficient operation. It’s a treasure trove that includes almost any item you might care to think of; from cutlery to furniture to a George Best football annual, or from an immaculate suit to modern art worth

thousands of pounds. Moving to the new site enabled the hospice retail team to re-evaluate how donations are processed. The charity has since taken the commendable approach to circularise their economy, meaning that nothing goes to waste.

Every donation that comes to us is utilised in some way

Charity retail helps recycle pre-loved items and also helps reduce landfill waste. According to the website – charityretail.org.uk – during 2018 - 2019, across the UK, 339,000 tonnes of textiles were kept out of landfill as a direct result of charity retail. However, it’s not only textiles that are recycled at the distribution centre as Emily told me. “Our new distribution centre is structured so that every donation that comes to us is utilised in some way. We are trying to create as little waste as possible. Every donation whether it be clothing, homeware, furniture or electricals is sorted and sold in our retail outlets, re-used or re-purposed.” Currently the hospice has eight shops spread across five locations: in Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath,

Lindfield, Lewes and Uckfield, with a new one opening in Hove this spring. There are also two shops operating under the ‘dispensary’ brand in central Brighton, which retail high-end fashion, homewares and furniture. The hospice was fortunate to be gifted several of Dame Vera Lynn’s 1950s original dress patterns, products from the era when it was common to

make one’s own clothes. “Who knows,” chuckled Emily, “there could yet be a Dame Vera range in the future.” The bulk of donations come directly to the distribution centre where they are sorted and distributed to the various shops. In this way items can be distributed according to the requirements of each shop. There are also nine clothing banks across the

Donations need to be clean and sellable local area where donations can be dropped off. Each clothing bank is routinely emptied, with the contents taken to the distribution centre for processing. Donors can still drop things off at any St Peter & St James Hospice shop and such donations are very

welcome, although as Emily was keen to emphasise, “donations need to be clean and sellable.” Around 30 people currently volunteer at the distribution centre, and along with the six permanent staff, they unpack, sort, categorise, distribute, sell or recycle almost everything that is received. Most of the donations end up in the shops, but online sales are also generated, on platforms like eBay, Depop and Vinted that reach a global market. Many volunteers have a personal link to the hospice, keen to retain a link with the hospice that helped them in the past. “They’re wonderful people,” said Emily. “We’ve also become involved with the government ‘Kick Start Scheme’ to provide six month placements for ten 16-24 year olds on Universal Credit and in danger of becoming long term unemployed.” Through its inpatient ward, wellbeing services and specialist community palliative nursing team, St Peter & St James Hospice supports over 1,000 people a year. Providing this support costs £8,000 a day so fundraising is essential to helping the good work continue. Emily was enthusiastic about the future. “We hope to be able to have a furniture shop here at the distribution centre before too long, which will allow us to have so much more on display.” Readers with fantastic saleable donations can find the distribution centre at Albourne Road, Hurstpierpoint, BN6 9ES or via the link www.stpjhospice.org/ support-us/donate-goods l The centre is open for donations from Monday Friday between 10am and 2pm. There is plenty of on site parking. The team can also assist with removal of larger items of furniture and house clearances – for more information please visit www.stpjhospice.org

Rhymes for our Times A COMMON NEED

A malady of bums and tums unites us all wherever it comes. Regardless of race, dogma or creed, it reveals to us a common need to be restored to health. So whoever we pray to, and ask for this it matters not. What does matter though is, we cease to fight and harm each other, but see the light that shines upon this planet of ours and pray that it lasts forever. If you like this, you will find more like it in "Rhymes for our Times". A collection of inspired poetry written by Fran, a no-nonsense 90-something. Some are wicked observations on modern life; others are more profound and poignant: all will make you smile.

AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

very day, SCFT staff touch the lives of more than 9,000 adults and children, providing medical, nursing, and therapeutic care in people’s own homes, community hospitals, care homes, GP surgeries, schools and other community venues. The specialist teams include nurses, doctors, health visitors, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and healthcare assistants, who care for people from their earliest days until their final moments – from health visitors supporting new mums to specialist community teams offering end of life care and everything in between. Teams help people, and their families, plan for and manage

Everything is underpinned by a vision to provide excellent care at the heart of the community

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) is the largest provider of NHS community services in Brighton and Hove, West Sussex and the High Weald, Lewes, and Havens area of East Sussex as Adele Trathan explains changes in their health, and support them to live well independently. Everything is underpinned by a vision to provide excellent care at the heart of the community. You may not realise it, but you or someone you know has probably been supported by one of SCFT’s community services. Did you know… l SCFT have set up and currently run five large-scale Covid-19 vaccination centres across Sussex, recruiting more than 1,200 staff and 1,000 volunteers, who have so far given more than 600,000 vaccinations. l Health visitors offer both antenatal and postnatal support to new mums,

and during 2021 they visited more than 10,700 newborns and their families. Once the children start school, they’ll be supported by the Trust’s teams of school nurses. l SCFT runs 11 intermediate care units (ICUs), offering short-term in-patient rehabilitation to people who are not quite ready to go home from acute hospital, or who need some extra support but who are not ill enough to be admitted to an acute ward. In

2021 the ICUs cared for more than 4,600 people. l Four Minor Injuries Units (MIUs) and two Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) provide a useful alternative to visiting Accident & Emergency when you have an injury. Each year the MIUs and UTCs help nearly 110,000 people. l The Trust’s Living Well Programme is a free self-management course for people living with a long-term health condition such as heart disease,

diabetes, asthma, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, depression, back pain or chronic fatigue syndrome. l If you are experiencing issues with your mental health, you can ask for help from Time to Talk, a talking therapies service that can help with conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks and phobias. l SCFT has an official charity – Sussex Community NHS charity – which raises funds to cover the costs of projects which go above and beyond what NHS core funding provides. Over the last year it’s provided more than £90,000 to fund improvements to staff and patient areas, a wellbeing bus and equine therapy sessions. ith low interest rates and rising inflation, many people are looking at ways to make their savings work harder for them. Traditionally, money invested in shares has outperformed money in savings accounts, making investments an attractive proposition. Yet, investments do not offer a guaranteed return and to get the best returns you must take the greatest risks. Those tempted would be wise to consider the following:  What are your investment goals? If you are nearing retirement, it wouldn’t be wise to expose your savings to huge risk.  How long are you happy to tie up your money?  Are you prepared to stay in for a minimum of five years and accept the ups and downs of the markets?  Can you afford to lose your money?  Will you create and manage your investment portfolio yourself or will you use a professional?

FUNDS Funds can invest in anything from countries to energy companies to gold. Your money is pooled with that of other investors and a specialist fund manager actively buys and manages the investment. While the fluctuations in funds can be smaller, you will have to pay fees on managed funds. Alternatively, you can invest in an exchange traded fund (ETF) that invests in a pool of companies that track a specific index, like the FTSE 100 tracker for example. ETFs are traded like normal shares and are cheaper than managed funds.

DIY investing is like tending an allotment – it takes time and energy BONDS A bond is issued when you lend your money to a company or country for a specific amount of time for a guaranteed return. DIY Vs MANAGED INVESTMENTS Vs ROBO-ADVISORS DIY investing is like tending an allotment – it takes time and energy. The cheapest way to trade is through an online trading platform. Be aware that you will pay charges when using the platform, buying shares and if buying funds, you will incur management fees. Do-It-For-You investing involves a professional actively managing your portfolio. This can incur high fees but could also bring higher returns. Do-It-With-You investing allows you to buy a ready-made portfolio via a robo-advisor. This is selected for you according to the level of risk and the length of time you are prepared for and is cheaper than a managed portfolio. l

PETS

As we enter the New Year, Teddy has been telling his human translator, Helen Stockton about his reflections over changes that have happened during the last year and how he is contemplating life for 2022

N

ow that Christmas is over and we’ve emerged, blinking into a new year with smaller bank balances and larger waistlines, it’s time for a paws, or four, for reflection. New Year is an opportunity for change and reinvention. This time last year, I was a single dog, lounging around in my bed, unopposed, playing with toys at my leisure, and nibbling treats in a casual fashion. The arrival of my apprentice, Bear, meant some rapid changes. I have learnt to hold my ground and my mattress, share my toys, and get in quick with the treats before she makes short work of the lot. And she’s changed quite a bit too. When she first came, she was a tiny thing with a squeaky noise at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other. Fortunately for all of us, she has learnt where it is socially acceptable to leave her little deposits although the squeak has developed into a rather shrill bark, and, in spite of progress in other areas, deployment of her razor-sharp little fangs is still an area for development. She has chewed through so many things that it would be beyond the scope of this column to list them. The latest to fall victim was the name tag on my special Christmas collar. This was a fetching red plastic and shaped like a Christmas tree. Not

only did Bear eat the tag but I was actually wearing the collar at the time. Unbelievable! ‘Them Indoors’ are

presently undergoing a bit of reinvention themselves. ‘Him Indoors’ retired last autumn so is discovering life beyond work, which apparently, is rather agreeable. ‘Her Indoors’ is younger so she’s still doing a bit out in her office, but is aiming for less time working and rather more time away in the motorhome, which suits me fine. There has been some talk of moving house, but I’ve checked, and our house seems perfectly static to me so I don’t know what that’s all about. I’m sure things will reveal themselves in the fulness of time, they usually do. Anyway, I feel like I’ve done enough in the major reinvention department, although the notion of becoming a cool Uncle Teds, rather than the comfortable slippers type, is rather appealing. I suspect the apprentice would only chew the

Not only did Bear eat the tag but I was actually wearing the collar at the time. Unbelievable! slippers and dark glasses would make it more difficult to see what she’s up to. Anyway, change doesn’t have to be big things. I am never going to wake up and find I’ve become a German Shepherd overnight. Small changes can be just as effective and are easier to manage, so now could be a good time to take stock and make some minor adjustments. Happy New Year! l

ORCHARD FRAMING BESPOKE FRAMERS

I recently had my Covid booster jab. Arriving at the vaccination centre, I wondered if I’d missed some vitally important newsflash. Had a sombre-toned BBC newsreader announced the imminent arrival of the zombie apocalypse? What was going on? The army had arrived and were in charge. Camouflage-clad personnel stood at the entrance, directing people, assisting at the administrative desk and guiding folk to cubicles, where a mix of military and civilian medics administered the vaccines. Perhaps it’s our innate desire to please and be respectful of authority figures that makes most of us toe the line without question. When a uniformed member of the armed forces instructs you in a super-polite, but briskly professional voice to “stand there” or “follow me” or “sit down” it’s like being a five-year-old child all over again; keen to please a kind, but no-nonsense adult. All was quiet, regimented efficiency. I felt pathetically grateful and humbled that it had been laid on for me, with absolutely no charge at the point of need, (if I’m honest, I felt slightly peeved that no-one blew a bugle or saluted). As I was ushered towards the exit, a mere 20 minutes after arriving and deposited back into the civilian world, an enthusiastic, eccentrically-dressed helper offered a colourful, ‘I’ve had my vaccination!’ sticker, which somehow emphasised the point; “You are now leaving the domain of proper grown-ups. Go away, play nicely and we’ll sort out the important stuff.” One of the anti-vaxxers’ many complaints is, “It’s like living in a nanny state!” Well, sometimes nanny is just who you need.
