A Celebration of Sussex

Taking its name from the Old English Suth-Seaxe – translated as ‘Land of the South Saxons’ – the long and rich history of Sussex dates back to the 5th century, when the Kingdom of Sussex emerged as one of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms that dominated England after the end of Roman rule in Britain.

Divided into six administrative regions known as ‘rapes’ following the Norman conquest – and further divided into the two distinct administrative counties of East and West Sussex in 1974 – the historic county of Sussex nevertheless retains a common identity across all of its regions, with its own flag, symbolic flower and motto: 'We Wunt Be Druv!'

An annual celebration of this common history, Sussex Day, takes place on June 16 each year - a date chosen to mark the feast day of the county’s patron saint, St. Richard of Chichester. Although the historic significance of the date stretches back to the reign of Henry III, Sussex Day itself is a much more recent development. The brainchild of former Brighton bus conductor Ian Steedman, who pitched the idea to Crawley MP Henry Smith while he was leader of West Sussex County Council, Sussex Day was officially inaugurated in 2007 and is often marked by flying the Sussex flag in the county’s towns

Set on an azure background and featuring six golden martlets – a mythical, swallow-like bird depicted without feet as a symbol of its perpetual flight – each bird represents one of the county’s historic rapes (from east to west: Chichester, Arundel, Bramber, Lewes, Pevensey and Hastings). First depicted in John Speed’s 1611 Saxon Heptarchy on a shield borne by Saxon king Ælle, the design is believed to date back even further to the coat of arms worn by the county’s 14th century ‘Knight of the Shire’, Sir John de Radynden. The county’s symbolic flower is the round-headed rampion – also referred to as The Pride of Sussex – whose distinctive purple flowers can be found across the rolling, chalky hills of the South Downs.

Standing Out in Sussex

Along with the long Sussex coastline which runs all the way across its southern borders, perhaps the county’s most defining topographical feature is the rolling hills of the South Downs, which dominate much of the county’s inland landscape.

Covering approximately 260 square miles, the chalk grasslands of the South Downs are home to many species of insects, birds, plants, mammals and reptiles, but the landscape also has some other unique features too. Hill figures and chalk carvings appear across many of the UK’s grasslands, two of which lie within the Sussex borders.

Perhaps the most famous of these is The Long Man of Wilmington, situated six miles northwest of Eastbourne. Its origins are something of a mystery and while it was once thought that the figure dated back to the iron age or even the neolithic period, recent archaeological work conducted by the University of Reading suggests it dates to the 16th or 17th century. A more recent example is the Litlington White Horse, understood to have been carved in 1838 by the residents of Frog Firle Farm to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.

The unique Sussex landscape has often served as inspiration for literary types too, many of whom ended up living in Sussex. Rudyard Kipling spent much of his life at his estate in Burwash, where a statue to the man himself was unveiled in 2019, while Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle also has a statue in Crowborough, where the author spent his later years. And let’s not forget A.A. Milne, whose time living in Hartfield served as the inspiration for his most famous creation, Winnie the Pooh.

Sussex is home to several other intriguing monuments too. The Chattri Memorial, situated just north of Brighton, pays homage to 53 Indian soldiers killed in action in WWI, while another much more macabre monument can be found in Lewes. Known as the Martyrs Memorial, commemorates the deaths of 17 protestants burned at the stake during the reign of Mary I. Along with Guy Fawkes, the Marian Martyrs are celebrated each year at the town’s legendary bonfire procession.

Food & Drink in Sussex

Sussex has a long and rich history when it comes to food and drink, with many unique foodstuffs and recipes originating in the county, not to mention its proud history of beer brewing and wine-making.

Chichester was once famous for its lobster, an ingredient immortalised in an old poem, The Seven Good Things of Sussex, which names the coastal crustacean among a list of other unique local delicacies such as Pulborough eel, Selsea cockles, Rye herring, Amberley trout, Arundel mullet and Bourne wheatear.

Other traditional foods include Sussex Bacon Pudding, a savoury suet pastry dish, and Sussex Churdles – small, meat-filled pastries topped with cheese and breadcrumbs. More recently, Banoffee Pie was invented and first served at what was then The Hungry Monk restaurant in the East Sussex village of Jevington in 1971.

Beer and ale are known to have been brewed in Sussex since medieval times – in fact the monks at Lewes Priory sometimes drank their own ale instead of the local water, which was often too contaminated for human consumption. The town is also home to Harvey’s Brewery, founded in 1790, making it the oldest brewery in Sussex.

Harvey’s Porter beer was also one of the key ingredients in what some believe to be the world’s first ever cocktail, a hot drink named Huckle-My-Buff, which also utilised eggs, sugar and smuggled French brandy. In recent years there has also been an explosion in new, small-batch craft beer companies across the county, many of which are already multi-award winners.

Perhaps the county’s most famous export these days, however, is its wine. It’s no accident that Sussex wines have gained a reputation as some of the finest in the UK; some two dozen vineyards are situated on the unique, chalky grasslands of the South Downs, which once formed part of a giant ridge that connected England to mainland Europe. Known as the Weald-Artois anticline, the ridge stretched from Sussex all the way to the Artiois region of France, giving the region the same rich soil found in other famous wine-making regions such as Champagne.
