WELCOME W

elcome to all our first-timers, and welcome back to all our regulars! It’s almost that time of year again, the second Sunday in October, Wells Food Festival Day, which this year falls on Sunday, October 10. Now in our ninth year, our team of volunteers have once again put together a superb and diverse celebration of local artisan food and drink. After a really challenging year for many of our producers, we look forward to delivering another successful Festival for them and our visitors. This year nearly 200 stalls will be there to showcase and sell their culinary delights. We are delighted that nearly all of our regular stallholders will be returning, as well as some really interesting newcomers for you to discover, all selected by us to offer you the widest possible variety of tastes and ideas. We’re so lucky in Somerset to be surrounded by such quality, such talent and such inventiveness. And it’s all here for you. New for 2021 we are pleased to introduce an area specifically for artisan producers from Beyond Somerset, many of which traded with us at our virtual festival last year; a feature area celebrating English Wine; and for our younger visitors, Fun Kitchen free cookery sessions. As always, entry is free. There’s so much to see, so why not make a day of it? We’ve arranged plenty of places for you to take the weight off your feet. Welcome to the city of Wells, everyone. Have a terrific day!

INTRODUCTION

Our History None of us could have imagined, back in 2012, that what started out as a Great Somerset Sunday Lunch, with a handful of stalls, would become so large, so diverse, and so popular that the Daily Telegraph chose us as one of Europe’s best food festivals. Nine years on, Wells Food Festival is firmly established in the Somerset calendar – back in 2019 (our last live festival) despite the downpours more than 10,000 visitors arrived to enjoy the food and drink stalls, all set in the extraordinary surroundings of England’s smallest city. In the early days, it was confined to the medieval Market Place, but now the Festival has expanded into the Town Hall, continues onto the Bishop’s Palace Green along the Palace Moat Walk, and into the Recreation Ground and Bishop’s Barn. A tiny team of less than 10 volunteers have dedicated their time over the last few months to arrange this year’s festival

wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

– booking and locating stallholders, marquees, electrics, safety equipment, recruiting stewards, seeking the sponsorship we need just to break even, arranging insurance, rubbish disposal… the list goes on. A mountain of work full of tiny details. But as they say, it’s worth it – if you have a great day, we do too. Still crazy after all these years.

Our Purpose From the very start, we have stuck firmly to our prime aim: to showcase and celebrate the high-quality work of our county’s artisan food and drink producers and manufacturers. By attracting such a large audience, we are proud to play our part in boosting our stallholders’ businesses, the local economy, the city’s prestige and the tourism on which the whole area depends. And, we hope to give each of our visitors a fulfilling day, packed with flavour, surprises, fun and learning.

WHAT’S ON

There’s much more to the Food Festival than just the stalls. Here’s a taster of some of the other things to sample on the day

Beyond Somerset

The Children’s Trail

Last year’s virtual festival enabled us to broaden our reach beyond Somerset and invite producers from across the South West. This extension to the festival is being brought to life in a new area with a selection of regional artisan food and drink makers that complement those appearing in the Artisan Market.

Mogers Drewett is proudly supporting the Children’s Trail at this year’s Festival. For a fun way to see the festival, join the interactive trail and learn some great local foodie facts as you go! Collect your trail map (complete with clues) at the entrance or from the Wells Food Festival Stand and you’re ready to start your journey of food discovery. There are two trails available – a picture trail for little ones and a quiz trail for the slightly older kids. Both trails will take you all around the festival, with clues hidden in each of the main areas. There will be a small prize available for all correctly completed trail sheets at the end of the trail (from where you collected the Trail Map).

A Celebration of English Wine New for 2021 is a feature area celebrating the quality wine produced in England. Local vineyards will be represented alongside those from further afield. Ben Franks, of Novel Wine in Bath, will be sharing his passion for English wine with three exclusive tasting sessions during the day. The themes are: Bacchus wine from different regions, a wine and food pairing, and English fizz. For more details and to book your space at a tasting session visit our website at wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

Town Hall The lower floor of the Town Hall hosts local artisan crafts and produce. Knife sharpeners to candles, local jams and chutneys to beeswax covers, and hand-crafted wooden products all make an appearance.
