Welcome

New and Improved? B

limey, it’s been a while hasn’t it? Everyone’s Covid experience seems to have been different, but we all sincerely hope that you’re getting through the other side of it with the very minimum of fuss and bother. As you can see, we used the time rather constructively to completely redesign The Basis from the ground up. Ultimately, we’ve tried our hardest to bring you the best event guide possible. If you love it, tell us; if you don’t then still tell us. If there’s something you think would make it even better then tell us that too, as if we like it as well then the chances are it’ll get put in. As I hope you’ll appreciate, venues aren’t quite back to normal yet, but we have scoured the four corners of the Internet to bring you as many events and things to do as we could. We really hope you like what we’ve done with the magazine, and we’ll be back for more of the same in a couple of months. Dean Mortlock – Editor

The 2020 Wells Literary Festival is going ahead as planned

R

unning from October 16-24, the Wells Literary Festival will now offer a hybrid experience: the usual audience gathering in Cedars Hall, Wells combined with live, highly professional streaming of the whole Festival for a wider audience. This means that Festival fans can choose either to go to Cedars Hall to see the writers live or live streamed on stage, or they can watch online from their own homes. Strict Covid measures will be installed at Cedars – including cleaning, social distancing and masks – with a seating algorithm to allow groups to be able to sit together. As always, there’s a fantastic line up of writers,

including Jeremy Vine (pictured), Simon Armitage, Michael Eavis and many more. Tickets will be on sale for the Cedars Hall audiences but the online events watched at home will be free, with the hope that people will give a donation towards the Festival’s funds for education projects in our local schools. As it’s an exceptional year, there is a ticket limit of 100 per event. If you’re a Friend of the Festival though, you can purchase up to four tickets from August 31 – a week earlier than the general public. For more information on becoming a Friend of the Festival, head online to www.wellsfestivalofliterature.org.uk.

Street Community lunches return to Street Community Sunday Lunches are returning to the Crispin Community Centre in September, but with a few obvious changes. Under Covid-19 restrictions, each lunch session can only contain a maximum of 40 people, and lunches have to be booked on 01458 447248. The price is just £5 per person, and they will take place on the second Sunday of the month going forward. The Community Centre’s aim is to eventually get the numbers back up to 80 as more restrictions are lifted by the Government. The Centre also has spaces available at their Tuesday Tai Chi sessions (which take place between 2-3pm). Again, booking for these is essential.

Ready, steady, cook! TIME TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE MAN BEHIND THE MEALS. . . You’ve almost certainly heard about the Quarry Kitchen in Dulcote near Wells, and you’ve probably eaten Charlie Bigham’s food too, but how much do you actually know about the man and his company? Charlie Bigham has always had a passion for food, but he started off his working life as a management consultant. At the age of around 28 he decided enough was enough, took a sabbatical from his job, bought a campervan and headed off to India on a culinary pilgrimage. It was there that he decided to set up his own food business when he got back to the UK. The ethos behind the Charlie Bigham’s company at that initial point remains exactly the same today: to make delicious food that can be cooked quickly and easily at home. The rest, as they say, is history, but Charlie Bigham’s has made a big impact in the area since setting up their Quarry Kitchen in 2017. They’ve employed more than 300 people locally, supported local charities such as Wells SOUP and the Wells Carnival, and delivered 1,500 of their Lasagne for Two meals to residents in and around Wells in April this year.

BE MERRY The Wells Food Festival is one of the few larger events still being hosted in 2020. And although it’s definitely a different festival from previous years, Dean Mortlock thinks there’s still lots to look forward to

S

omebody far smarter then me once said that we should celebrate creativity and confidence in the face of adversity. And they’re right of course. Rather than simply cancel annual events, we’ve seen groups of people work creatively together to offer solutions to difficult problems, and the Wells Food Festival is the perfect example of that. This annual celebration of food in its many forms is now in its eighth year, and regularly has around 15,000 visitors to its one-day open-air event. Obviously

“ This annual celebration of food is now in its eighth year and has around 15,000 visitors” bringing anywhere near that number of people into the city under current conditions would be impossible, but thankfully they had the help of Charlie Bigham’s to offer a workable solution.

thebasis the basis

Bringing in the online team behind magazines such as Country Living and Good Housekeeping, who proved that an online shopping event was possible, work started on making the Wells Food Festival a virtual experience unlike any other. As always, the core of the Food Festival (virtual or otherwise) had to be the food producers themselves. Jon Abbott, the festival director, said: “Our top priority has always been to support our artisan producers and local traders, and put them at the heart of the festival. This year it seems more important than ever. “Thanks to the support of Charlie Bigham’s, we firmly believe 2020 will be remembered as the year Wells Food Festival went above and beyond to champion our region’s amazing food.” The 2020 Wells Food Festival is made up of two unique elements. Firstly there’s the brand-new Wells Food Festival with September/October 2020

Wells Food Festival

Charlie Bigham’s website at wellsfoodfestival.bighams.com, which should be up and running by the time you’re reading this. Here you can browse through over 150 artisan food and drink producers from across the region. When you find something you like (and trust me, you will), you simply click on the link to be taken straight through to the producer’s site. It’s all wonderfully simple.

“ Whether you’re in Wells, Washington or Warsaw, this will truly be a global event” Then there’s the virtual festival itself, which takes place on the weekend of October 1011 at the same website address (wellsfoodfestival.bighams.com). Much like the previous live festivals, as well as browsing through the virtual stalls, you’ll be able to take part in masterclasses, cook-alongs and talks by Charlie Bigham and his team of master chefs, plus guest appearances from some of the top food stars from the West Country. You will also be able to sign up to a live drawing workshop with renowned illustrator Emily Sutton, who not only created all of the beautiful illustrations for this year’s festival, but also Bigham’s distinctive food packaging. Common Farm Flowers in Wincanton will be hosting an online flower arranging

6

event, there will be live music by the brilliant local band the Harlem Rhythm Cats, and there will also be a food photography competition. New events and special guests are being added all the time, so we recommend you keep an eye on either the official Food Festival website, or Bigham’s social pages.

BE OUR GUESTS SOME OF THE WELL-KNOWN CULINARY FACES YOU’LL BE ABLE TO SEE AT THE FESTIVAL

The best of the West

Of course, one of the benefits of hosting an online event of any kind is that you’re suddenly open to a much larger audience. Whether you’re in Wells, Washington or Warsaw, this will truly be a global event, and Charlie Bigham’s are helping to make sure the word gets out. From advertising on around one million of their food packs to a competition where you can win one of 50 Wells Food Festival hampers, this is going to be yet another Wells festival that helps to put England’s smallest city on the map. “The South West is home to a wealth of fantastic independent producers,” said Charlie Bigham, “who have nurtured their businesses by investing time, resource and passion over many years. Our aim is to help this artisan community by bringing the festival to a virtual national audience.” To find out more about Charlie and how he’s been able to help this year’s Wells Food Festival, check out our interview with the man himself on page 34.

Heart of the Tribe

Q&A Who better to explain the ethos behind Heart of the Tribe than Julian Clark, the person behind it all?

Can you give us a brief history of Heart of the Tribe? Heart of The Tribe stems from a desire to enrich Glastonbury’s cultural community. It was founded in 2018 when I purchased a rundown property, which has undergone extensive renovations to transform it into a modern gallery with a beautiful garden. What is it you hope to achieve with Heart of the Tribe? We hope to inspire conversation about creativity and help people connect with art as an accessible part of everyday life. We aim to support the local culture and economy by enhancing the premium market of Glastonbury. Aside from exhibitions, what else does Heart of the Tribe offer? We have a really beautiful garden to enjoy, and a small event space that is available for private hire. We will be hosting talks and workshops

that support creative development. We also offer an affordable artist studio that can be booked by the day, week or month. How do artists contact you if they’re looking to get involved? The best way is to sign up to our Artist Directory on our website. This is a free service we are offering to all creatives to help to connect them with the wider online community. Artists will also have the opportunity to submit work for group exhibitions. We will be putting out a call once a year for core artists with whom we work more closely, so it’s good to keep an eye on our social media and sign up to our mailing list. What’s the best way for people to find out about upcoming events? All our events will be published on our website as well as our Instagram and Facebook pages @heartofthetribegallery and twitter @heartofthetrib3.

The Heart of Glastonbury

There’s a new home for art in the town’s High Street…

H

eart of The Tribe is a new quality art gallery at the top of Glastonbury High Street, focusing on innovative and progressive original work. Contemporary approaches and diverse subject matter will offer an alternative to the conventional Glastonbury iconography and mystical themes. Representing a wide selection of artists from the Somerset area at differing stages of artistic development, they bring together an environment aimed at enriching artistic progress. For some of the core artists, this launch will be their first showcase in the professional art world, while others have been practicing professional artists for years. The gallery will offer regular exhibitions, events and talks, with the goal of making art locally available and accessible. There is a strong emphasis on supporting personal and professional development to help foster the sense of artistic community that serves as the foundation of the Heart of the Tribe’s ethos. “We want the local community to see what variety of talent we have on our doorstep. We want to challenge the way people view art and inspire an alternative perspective. You shouldn’t have to go to a city to attend an installation or contribute to a collective,” explains Kim Von Coles, Gallery Manager. Heart of the Tribe will be opening its doors to the public for the first time on Monday, August 31 with an exhibition entitled Diversity, showcasing work from each of their artists. There will also be a solo exhibition of work by the talented painter, Jon Minshull later in the year. Visit www.heartofthetribe.com for more information.

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUTH WITH A FUTURE A superb charity designed specifically to help young people in need

Y

outh With A Future (YWAF) is a registered charity that works alongside other organisations to support young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, and those in supported housing projects in the Mendip area. YWAF also supports local positive youth initiatives and activities. Since its inception in 2003, YWAF has given away over £100,000 in grants to young people and youth organisations.

Youth support Over the years, YWAF has supported the work of Mendip YMCA and the young people who would not otherwise have anywhere to live. Many are ‘sofa surfing’ (staying with friends/sleeping on their sofas/floors) for long periods of time, having no place to call home, and unable to live with their parents for various reasons. Many have suffered

family breakdown or bereavement and find it difficult to settle. Move-in Grants are available to young people to purchase essential items, such as bedding and kitchen equipment. Each of the projects is given funds to support positive activities such as cooking/art and crafts, and emergency funds are also available. Local groups and projects working with young people can also apply for funding to support their work, and a number of grants are made annually to support young people into education, training and employment. The Coronavirus pandemic has curtailed YWAF’s usual fundraising activities, so they would love to hear from anyone who may be able to help them with some fundraising ideas. For more information about YWAF’s work, how you can help to support us, or how to apply for funding, go to www.ywaf.org.uk.

Insane Games

Game on!

It may be crazy, but there’s more to Insane Games than just games…

T

here is a total of three Insane Games stores dotted around Somerset – in Wells, Street and Bridgwater – and it’s no exaggeration to say that they’re the best places to get your games, peripherals, consoles and so much more, too. You see, aside from games for (almost)

every console from the Master System and NES upwards, you can also buy loads of other stuff. Check out ‘More than Games’ below to find out exactly what. One range that is selling like the proverbial cakes is trading cards, including Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh.

GAMES As you would expect, they sell plenty of these but not just for the current formats (PS4, Xbox One and Switch), as you can pick up games for everything from popular consoles such as

the PlayStation and XBox, but also older, more obscure ones. If you’re looking for games for a Sega Saturn, Nintendo Gamecube or a Wii U, you’ll find a surprising large selection

to choose from – they have thousands of games in stock at any one time and the stock is literally changing every day as people bring in games and consoles for trade in.

CONSOLES You might be a collector, or you might just have a burning desire to play Alex Kidd in Miracle World on the Master System (trust me, it can happen), but regardless of why you want to

buy a retro console, you’ll find plenty to choose from at any of the Insane Game shops. From pristine PSones to ever-popular handhelds like the DS, 3DS and Game Gear.

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE When you’ve watched all the decent boxsets on Netflix and realised that there are few films on there worth watching, we suggest heading down to Insane Games to check out their DVDs for sale. Incredibly, they have over 4,000 for sale, from boxsets to anime to classics and kids films, it’s a cliché, but there really is something there for everyone. And prices start at around 50p a DVD, too.

ZOMBIE INFECTION T

here are few things in life we at The Basis love more than zombies, so imagine how tickled pink we were to find out that there are regular undead-related events being held at Shepton Mallet Prison? Zombie Infection is a terrifying liveaction zombie experience, which means that you get to spend around two hours immersed in a guided game with professional actors, weapons (complete with

upgrades) and zombies. Lots and lots of zombies. But not just any zombies though, as these guys are professionals, complete with film-quality make up. You’ll need nerves of steel and a strong constitution to get through this. If you’re a fan of the films of George A. Romero, or looking for a very unique present idea for a loved one, then this could be exactly what you’re looking for. www.zombieinfection.co.uk

DO TRY THIS AT HOME – CHILDREN’S WORLD

T

he Children’s World charity in Glastonbury recently announced DO Try This at Home! – an ongoing pop-up programme of live workshops and performances, designed to inspire creative and educational activities that can also be done at home. Based at Paddington Farm, Glastonbury, the weekly workshops are available for families in Somerset at a cost of only £2 per household. Charity Director Kristen Lindop said, “Thanks to funding from the Glastonbury Town Council Youth Committee DO Try This at Home! is already up and running – in August we’ve had an amazing range of workshops: poetry with Chris Redmond, balloon science with Balloonatic, juggling with Higher Beings and our famous juggling Trustee, Haggis McLeod, and a brilliant Mojo Moves session with Rare Species. And, thanks to further funding from Somerset Skills & Learning and the Somerset Community Foundation, there’s a lot more to come, including magic, storytelling, hooping and puppetry!” To comply with social distancing, places for each workshop are strictly limited to only five households at a time and must be booked in advance. For up-to-date information on the weekly workshops and how to book, follow the Children’s World Facebook page or contact Children’s World at info@ childrensworldcharity.org/07449 825750 to be added to their DO Try This at Home! mailing list.

A Spooky Special

One event that we sadly weren’t able to get in the event guide is the East Somerset Railways’ annual Spooky Specials. At the time of going to print, we heard that the Railway was doing everything it could to bring the popular event back in a Covid-friendly format, so we suggest you check out their Facebook page to find out when it’s returning.

No trick , all treat

While still on the subject of things that go bump in the night, Enosis Events are once again hosting their Halloween Spooktacular at the Wells Town Hall on Saturday, October 31. Expect loads of stalls, a wonderfully spooky theme, and plenty of things to do for all the family.

BAND APRIL 16 HEAD TO ABBEY ROAD FOR CHARITY EP

O

ne of the many fantastic things that happened while we were away that we completely missed was that renowned local musicians the Priddice Brothers Band recorded a new EP titled All Will Be Revealed at Abbey Road Studios (yep, the Abbey Road Studios). The EP is a collection of songs written by the band to highlight the stigma of men’s mental health through their music. The first track from the EP, Paranoia, was released on July 31,

and the next one, Anglers Bridge, will be out on September 4. The band have joined forces with the MIND charity to help raise money for the charity’s campaigns, so please do whatever you can to help the guys raise the profile of men’s mental health, as it’s such a worthy cause. You can listen to the tracks on streaming platforms like Spotify, or head to www.facebook.com/ craigandalexpriddice to find out more about the band.

Venues Reopening At the time of going to press, many live music venues were still unable to host indoor gigs. The few that are will be featured in our Event Guide, but we

suggest that you contact individual venues, or check their social pages to find out exactly when they will be hosting live music again.

thebasis the basis

Of course the best way to keep abreast of the local music scene would be to check out the Thursday Live show from 7-9pm every week on GFM. Hosted by Ian Liversidge, it’s a perfect round-up of the local music scene, complete with new releases, interviews and live sessions. To find out more about GFM and check out their full programme schedule, go to www.gfm.org.uk.

No Regrets Hot off the musical press is the debut album from the rather superb Jamestown Brothers, a band that cunningly blend Blues, Country and Folk to great effect. Titled Rebels, Rogues and Regrets, the album was released on August 31, and you can find out more at www. thejamestownbrothers.co.uk. September/October 2020

Interview Charlie Bigham

The Last Word

He’s one of Wells’ top employers and is now also the main sponsor for the Wells Food Festival. We thought it was about time we caught up with Charlie Bigham to find out what’s cooking… Why is it important for you to support the Wells Food Festival? We’ve actually been supporting the festival in a small way since we arrived in Dulcote Quarry in 2017. We think it’s a fantastic showcase of local food and artisan producers, so we were very excited to see if we could play a bigger role. This year we’re the headline sponsor of the festival, and that will continue for at least the next three years.

What were the challenges of creating an online-only event? Well obviously none of us had any idea of what was coming around the corner. My general attitude is that if things are difficult, and gosh they’ve been difficult for everyone over the last few months, you’ve still got to remain positive and plough your way through. So we were very keen not to let the coronavirus defeat the festival. When the decision was made to not hold a physical festival we’d already been working for some time on an online event, just in case. Now obviously the physical event isn’t happening this year but we’re more than ready, and I think it’s going to be fantastic.

fingers crossed that we can turn what’s happening into a positive to showcase our enormous local talent to an even wider audience.

Is it hard to be a large business but keep that artisan feel? I actually don’t think so. I think you just have to decide what’s important and then do it. Perhaps we’re just unusual in having decided that what was important for us was that food was produced with real care and in a careful way We still produce our food in the same way we did at the start, and we still make sure every recipe is perfect, and with good-quality ingredients.

Do you have a personal favourite Bigham’s meal?

The obvious advantage is that now it’s potentially a global event… I think the festival has done a fantastic job of bringing in a relatively local population to see what all the local producers are up to. And I think we need to keep our

thebasis the basis

Ah, that’s always a very tricky question! We make around 40 different recipes, and one of my very pleasurable jobs in the business is to do a lot of tasting and working with the chefs. My golden rule is that all my meals have to always be delicious, so I would happy take any home from across the range. I’m not going to deny you your answer though, so I’m going for something quite simple and pick our Lasagne, which is absolutely delicious. This would be followed by our Cherry Bakewell pudding which is part of our new range of puddings we launched earlier this year. All the puddings are delicious, but I think the Cherry Bakewell is the best of the lot.
