he weather may be damper than a water polo tournament, but there’s a lot to be thankful for, right? The nights are getting lighter, Spring is only a month away and there’s a veritable mountain of events coming your way over the next few weeks. The big event this month for music fans has to be Glastonbury Calling (page 12), but there’s lots for those looking for something different. There are plenty of snowdrop celebrations happening this month in Shepton Mallet and Wells (page 5), and you can check out everything that’s going on in February in our mahoosive Event Guide (pages 19-23). We’ve also got an interview with Robin Peters, the new Manager of the Strode Theatre, too (pages 14-15). Have a cracking February, and we’ll see you all again next month.

A MONTH OF SNOWDROP FESTIVALS
T
he Shepton Mallet Snowdrop Festival is returning again this month on February 1516, and promises to be one of the biggest yet. Held every year to honour the amazing work done by Shepton Mallet resident and keen galanthophile (snowdrop expert to you and I) James Allen, it’s two days packed with an incredible range of events for all the family. There will be specialist plant sales, snowdropthemed shop window displays, photography and poetry competitions, art and craft sales, and numerous walks, garden visits and craft sessions. The Festival is opened on the morning of the 15th by Michael Eavis and then there are events right through until 2.30pm on the 16th. There’s even a Floral Ball at the Art Bank in the town centre if you’re looking to make a weekend of it. Shepton Radio have also sponsored a Songwriting Competition where the judges include Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze. The BIshop’s Palace in Wells is also hosting Snowdrop Weekends on every weekend in February. There are guides to follow around the garden, as well as craft activities for children – all of which are free to Palace members, or simply included with the Palace admission. There will also be a very special Snowdrop Market on Sunday the 16th, courtesy of The Shepton
Experience people. So if you want to combine the festival with one of the best markets in the area, then be sure to pop along on the 16th. NEW COMMUNITY CINEMA
O
n February 19 Crispin Hall will be holding its first community cinema event, with a children’s film in the afternoon and then an adult-themed film in the evening. First up they have the brilliant animation Song of the Sea at 2pm, followed by the hilarious The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 7.30pm. The Hall’s community cinema project is designed to bring local residents together to enjoy entertainment in a warm and friendly atmosphere. They plan to screen a number of films during the school holidays in the coming year. Children are very welcome to bring a cushion and sit down at the front in the afternoon screening. All the ticket sales will be going back into the event to fund hiring the equipment and film licences, and refreshments will be available from their community kitchen.

ocus on Photography is a local, informal group of photography addicts. Originally started by one person who wanted to improve her camera skills, she met a local semi-retired advertising photographer and the Focus on Photography group was born. They welcome like-minded souls to join them at their sessions where they have a photography-related lecture or presentation, a practical workshop and an informal chat while enjoying tea, coffee and biscuits. ete Burns is a massively talented singer/ songwriter based in Dorest. Growing up in Belfast in the 1970s, Peter has been playing in bands, songwriting and recording for many years now. He plays a mix of new and familiar music blending original songs with re-workings of popular songs and forgotten music in a unique fingerpicking style – including covers from everyone from The Stranglers to Franz Ferdinand. Utilising loop pedal, harmoniser and guitar percussion he produces a fuller sound than you’d expect from a solo performer. A multi-instrumentalist, he has recorded a whopping 12 albums of his own material over the space of 12 years. Farm at Launcherley in Wells on February 16. In total there are three events organised by the Mid-Somerset Show: their annual Hedgelaying Competition, a Vintage Tractor Run and a Land Rover Meet. The Tractor Run is £10 to enter, while the other two are completely free. It’s a brilliant day out as well as a fantastic opportunity to support country crafts.

n February 15, Live From The Living Room is bringing acoustic Folk/Punk artist Jake Martin to The King Arthur in Glastonbury. POSTGRADUATE ART EXHIBITION IN STREET

he MA & Other Postgraduates exhibition at the Atkinson Gallery at Millfield (from Monday, February 24 through until Saturday, March 21) supports artists emerging from postgraduate study to be part of a collective show which aims to represent a broad range of disciplines and contemporary styles. Each year, universities across the UK are invited to nominate up to five students who they believe represent the highest quality and standards in their personal artistic practice. Selections are then made from these entries with around 45 works being chosen to be exhibited. The ethos of the Atkinson Gallery is to support upcoming artistic talent, and through the MA & Other Postgraduates Exhibition the gallery is able to offer a unique opportunity to emerging artists

NEW NETWORK TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

ells City Council has declared a Climate Emergency, and leading on from that is the formation of the Wells Climate Action Network. On Friday, February 7 the Network is hosting its first event at Wells Town Hall from 7pm where you’ll be able to find out what can be done to contribute at a personal and community level to help tackle the Climate Emergency.
he legendary musician Johnny Mars is launching ‘Dare to Dream’ a project to raise awareness of the effects mankind is having on the world on February 8 at Glastonbury Town Hall. This performance marks the first time ever that Glastonbury Brass has performed alongside Glastonbury Male Voice Choir. Students from local schools will be also be performing, too. A True Calling All the info you need for the first great music festival of the year…
G
lastonbury Calling hits number five this year, and has now become an established event on the festival calendar. This is an event that doesn’t churn out the same line up every year and is always full of surprises. It kicks off on the Friday this year with a silent disco at the Bocabar with two channels playing a mix of 12 fantastic local DJs, including Angel Mel, DJ Quantize, Average, and View from the Beach. It will basically be a mix of different genres of Dance music. There will be a third channel with a mix of Indie, Punk and Rock – no cheese here! As usual, the Saturday kicks off at the Riflemans Arms – this time with Punk band Liabilities AD. With five venues (Tor Leisure, Bocabar, King Arthur. Hawthorns Hotel and The Riflemans) there are 40 acts on the Saturday in total, playing a wide variety of music that will appeal to everyone. Zion Train, the legendary Dub pioneers are headlining the Bocabarn – as well as local rap heroes, House of Commoners. Fresh from headlining the Croissant Neuf tent at Glastonbury Festival, the Imprints, the eclectic Duncan Batey and Paradigm. Heading up Tor Leisure are K-Passa, who are a legendary West Country act with a huge local following, and will make the place bounce with their danceable Folk Rock. Also there are hard-working Country act Broken Bones Matilda, as well as China Bears, who have racked up over 210,000 streams with their Indie hit Meet Me In London, John D Revelator with their rebellious music, Fey Militia with Indie pop, George Wilding, who has been mentored by the members of XTC, and Bloom, an Indie act who are getting plenty of attention on the scene.

King Arthur has Lice, who supported Idles on tour, and are breaking their post-Punk shackles with an exciting new sound. Also there’s Oh the Guilt, with a big grungy and sometimes delicate sound, Last One Home, a massive local indie band with great songs, plus No Violet, Defaced, Whie Lion Parade, All Smiles In Wonderland and Hell-ios. This is the venue with all the loud and heavy acts. Other highlights include Alesund, for fans of London Grammar, Matt Owens from Noah and the Whale, Shoun Shoun, the GFM Songwriting winners, plus loads of other great music throughout the day. New Theatre Manager Takes Centre Stage Meet Robin Peters, the new Manager of the Strode Theatre…
I
t’s exciting times at the Strode Theatre, as they have a new Manager and are working on a new vision for its future. Robin Peters joined Strode at the end of September, and comes with plenty of experience and ideas after working in the arts sector for a number of years now. It’s impossible to overstate how important the Theatre is to the local community, so we thought it was the ideal time to find out a bit more about Robin and his plans for the Theatre’s future… Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m a Devon boy at heart but I’ve been working in Bristol for the last four years – and I’ve been living there for the last 10 years or so. I’ve worked across the South West in arts organisations. The last four years I was at Circomedia, which is a circus school as well as being a venue for the public, and pretty much exclusively dance and contemporary circus. I was working on the public-facing side of that – so not the shows or the students but more community development programmes. The youth circus, adult classes, projects, and all the fundraising.
What attracted you to the Strode Theatre? I think the Strode is a real peach. It’s a fantastic venue. I didn’t know it was here, and I’ve been working in this area my whole career. It has 340 seats, a lovely little studio, a fantastic team, and all the facilities you could want. So that really got my interest. I started looking at the programme, and imagined what it could be here. You look at a map of Somerset, zoom out and the Strode serves a huge area. As we’re finding though,

there are many more people that could be coming that need to be given the opportunity to. So is it a case of finding shows that would appeal to them, or making sure they know what’s going on? It’s a mix. Historically the programme has been a lot of film and Live On Screen (Royal Opera House, National Theatre, etc.) because it’s relatively low risk and you’re not hiring in a whole production team. But Strode has the facilities to do more live stuff. Again, if you look at that map of Somerset then where else can you see that in the county? The list of theatres that have the capacity to run professional live shows is relatively small. So you go “okay, great – we have to put live events on then”. We have to find a way to make that happen. We’re keeping the film and Live On Screen

programme, but adding in more live shows. We’ve started already. In mid-February we’ve got Knot, which is an acrobatic dance piece on the main stage, which is going to be extraordinary high skill, and quite different to what might have been seen here before. At the moment the spring programme is a few experiments; a few ideas. It’s partly my predecessor’s work, partly mine. A lot of the live stuff is things I want to try out and see if it works here. So there is a real mix and we’ll see, hopefully, some of those ideas come into full blossom in later programmes. Any other long-term plans for the Theatre? One of the major projects of the last three months has been to start articulating a vision for the Theatre. We need a core idea that pushes Strode into the future, and rather than just float in with my own ideas, I’ve asked as many people as possible who care about Strode and Street what they think. So if

you count the audience surveys as well then that’s about 400 voices that have fed into that process in the past three months. Some of the recurring themes are friendliness, accessibility and an overwhelming need for there to be more for young people to come and see at the Theatre. So those are the main strands we’re going to be working on; making more young people think that Strode is for them. Does that involve close links with the college? It does. Absolutely. There are nearly 2,000 young people at Crispin and Strode College on our doorstep, but we’ve also got a catchment area of around 10-15 miles. So if you take population demographics into account then that’s something like 10-12,000 young people. So yes, the Strode students should be coming here more, and we should be making young people in Mid-Somerset feel more welcome with the programme.

The Godney
Gathering It’s the 10th anniversary of The Godney Gathering, and this year the organisers are going all-out to bring you the party of the year on July 17-18. For the first time, the festival will kick off the weekend in style with a packed night of superb acts on Friday the 17th (see below), with an announcement on the full line-up on February 1. Another band returning to Godney – and also another band with their own distinctive sound – Laid Blak are a diverse bunch of musicians that collectively promise to deliver a bit of Reggae, some Hip-Hop, a smattering of Drum ‘n’ Bass and even the Blues! One that you should definitely not miss.
StOp, sToP (yep, that’s really how they spell it) are an energy-fuelled Metal and Rock band, and one of the best live acts on the circuit. Imagine Kiss mixed with The Darkness but with a touch of AC/DC and a lot of 80s Poodle Rock and you’ve got the unstoppable force that is StOp, sToP.

he Yakuza games are rightly classed as some of the finest in their genre. Part action/adventure and part beat-’em-up, the Yakuza games (and there are quite a few of them) reveal a beautifully written story as the games progress. Mostly set in a fictional district of Tokyo, this compilation features three of the best in the series: Yakuza 3, 4 and 5 – which hasn’t been available in a physical format in the West until now. But this is much more than a basic update. The whole graphics engine has been brought bang up to date, meaning that the games not only look stunning but also move beautifully in the highest framerate possible.
