he hare’s are almost mad, the sap is building itself up for the rise and spring is literally a few weeks away (although I would hardly notice it looking out of the office window as I type this), and there’s definitely an expectant feeling of optimism in the air. And speaking of optimism, we’re pretty optimistic that you’ll like this issue. Why? I’ll ruddy tell you. We’ve got features on Age UK, the Wells Soup & Social, the headline acts for this year’s 10th Anniversary Godney Gathering, a closer look at the brilliant Wells Art Practice, and information on the latest scheme from the green-fingered angels at The Food Forest Project. And yet, we still have more for you. A cracking news section full of, well, newsie things, and an Events Guide so packed that we had to sit on the lid of its case in order to lock them all in. EVENT CELEBRATES AMAZING WOMEN

n Sunday, March 8, join the Alfred Gillett Trust as they host renowned storyteller Jane Flood to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020. Jane will weave stories about some of the magical and amazing women from Arthurian legend, and take us on an adventure not to be missed. The evening is suitable for adults and older children. Tickets are available to pre-book (strongly advised) via their website www.alfredgilletttrust. org/whats-on and cost just £9.75 including a glass of bubbly on arrival and booking fees. There will also be a selection of hot and cold soft drinks available to purchase throughout the evening. Doors will open at 5.30pm with the stories starting at 6pm. The Alfred Gillett Trust is a Street-based charity which preserves the heritage collections of C & J Clark Ltd., the family which founded the global shoemaking company nearly 200 years ago. They preserve over 100,000 historical objects and archives spanning six generations of a family firm, helping to tell the story of the development
of Street with nearly 200 years of shoemaking heritage, and the impact the area had on social and industrial history. The large and varied collections of objects, books and archives provide a rich source of information and inspiration about the Clark family, C & J Clark Ltd and the local history of Street within a global context for members of the public. FREE CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL COMING TO SHEPTON

he Make the Sunshine CiC are bringing a fantastic free one-day children’s festival to Shepton Mallet on Saturday, March 7. I
t has been a good few months that the doors have been shut to the Cafe at Crispin Hall but they are open once again. The Crispin Hall Café is open Tuesday to Saturday 9am-4pm for breakfast, lunch, homemade cakes and great coffee. The Café is now run by The Crispin Hall Trust, a charity that runs Crispin Community Centre and Crispin Hall, so any profit made from the Café will get put back into the charity – it’s coffee with a conscience!

trodeLive, a group that aims to promote young musicians in the South West, are teaming up with well-known singer Sam Brookes for a special concert on March 19 at the Holy Trinity Church, Street. This unplugged concert will consist of original work by StrodeLive students with a few choice cover songs. StrodeLive students work together to put on all of their major events, and are responsible for organising every aspect of the concert. Money raised from all StrodeLive events will help fund their India project and the continuance of the music department at Strode. Tickets can be obtained from students or purchased on the door. Tickets will cost £6 each or £12 for a family.

We rate our wines from A-E on body – E being the fullest. Generally, ‘New world’ wines (Chilean, South African, Argentinian, etc.) are likely to be fuller bodied and higher in alcohol than ‘Old World’ (French, Italian, Spanish) etc. This is due to the strength of the sun they enjoy. Stronger sun makes the grape sweeter with higher levels of sugar which ultimately turns to alcohol. “Then think about the different grapes – a merlot, for example, can be full of cherry or blackberry flavours. With white wine, do you want it oaked, fruity and how dry? “Finally, the budget! opular local band Hoodoo Blue have been beavering away recently at Orchard Studios in Barton St David, and the result of all this hard work is now ready for release. Skin is the band’s first album, which is a selfproduced collection of 11 tracks of dreamy Trip-Pop with an Indie edge. We already love what we’ve heard, and you’ll be able to hear it for yourself from March 2, when Skin will be released on CD and across all well-known digital platforms. There’s much more planned for Hoodoo Blue in 2020 though, including a first appearance at The Godney Gathering in July.
A WINDOW WANDERLAND Window Wanderland, a magical night-time gallery across the whole of Shepton Mallet, is taking place between March 5-8. Dozens of homes and businesses in the town have registered, creating beautifully decorated windows for this very special event. CREATING A SPACE FOR ART
T
he CREATE:SPACE pop-up art gallery returned to the Crispin Centre in February for a short run, before packing up once again at the beginning of March. They run a number of exhibitions in the area each year, and always at the old Tesco shop in the Crispin Centre. Now looking for alternative pop-up venues in the area. CREATE:SPACE is an art collective that offers local artists space to exhibit their artwork completely free – and with no commission taken on any sales. Everybody who works for CREATE:SPACE does so on a voluntary basis, and their exhibitions are always massively popular and a fantastic mix of art styles – from handmade jewellery to street art. nosis Events are proud to be bringing back The Best of Somerset Show for its fourth year. With over 60 exhibitors, the craft fair has become one of the highlights of the year in Wells. This year’s show will not disappoint, as visitors will be able to browse some of the most unique and talented crafters that Somerset has to offer. The Pursuit of Happiness One man is on a mission to make the world a happier place…
A
ndy Cope is a Doctor of Happiness and, unsurprisingly, an all-round nice guy, too. He’s bringing his Art of Brilliance show to Glastonbury Town Hall on Wednesday, March 11, and believes it’s 90 minutes that can change your life. Clearly we needed to find out more, so grabbed Andy for a quick chat… So what is the Art of Brilliance? I’ve spent the last 15 years researching a subject called Positive Psychology. Basically, I’m a Doctor of Happiness, which is the exact opposite of a normal doctor. All the other psychologists in the world have looked at what’s wrong with people. I look at the happy ones, and try to work out why they are happy. And then, more importantly, what can we learn from these people that we can then do in our own lives so we can feel amazing too. Everyone can think of a handful of people in their lives who, when they’re in the room, you feel great as well. What I try to focus on is when your happiness is bigger than you and so it then leaks out to those closest to you, too. Basically, it creates a ripple effect. When you’re feeling great it in turn effects those around you. The Art of Brilliance is basically science, but without the big words. Happy people live in the same world. It rains on them as well, but they’ve got different ways of thinking. One of the things we’ll be focusing on the night is what I call Intentional Strategies, which are the Strategies people use to feel amazing. What else can people expect on the night? A lot of fun. Loads to take away with you but we’re also keeping it light. No big words and it’s absolutely brilliant fun – and hopefully entertaining as well.

Is Positive Psychology aimed at a certain type of person? Absolutely anybody. It’s applicable to all ages and just really simple but doable stuff on how to live a flourishing life. We do a lot of work in schools, because the earlier you understand wellbeing and happiness then the better your life chances. It’s a family thing; it’s a community thing, but it starts with individuals aiming to be a better version of themselves. What made you want to be a Doctor of Happiness? Hand on heart, I just wanted to feel happier. I studied Psychology for years and I knew a lot about what was wrong with people, but Psychology never looks at people that are already happy, so I decided to turn it on its head and do Britain’s firstever proper academic study on people who feel amazing. And there’s a bit of a world shortage of happiness right now so the timing is perfect.

A brilliant new scheme in Wells is offering food and company to those in need

“As soon as we put it out there that we were doing it, people started donating stuff,” says Georgie. “We just want people to know that we’re here, and that there’s a place they can go. Anyone’s welcome, you don’t have to be homeless, and you’ll be given something to eat, drink and a chat.” “We’re just trying to create a social thing and it’s all free. people make cake. We’ve got had to ask for anything, people just donate. Burns the Bread and The Square Soft Play bring leftover food if they have any sandwiches left over.” Also, any cooked food not eaten on the Monday night is kept and frozen. Then, when someone comes in with a voucher they can choose between the lunch Meal Deal or a hot one. Nothing at all goes to waste. ne cafe in Wells is doing its bit to help people looking for something to eat or drink, or just a bit of company. Daniels Café on Queen Street recently started a new ‘Soup & Social’ evening every Monday night, where the doors are open between 6-8pm and, thanks to the generosity of numerous donators, will be given hot drinks, food and company completely free. It started when Georgie Robbins, the owner of Daniels Café, launched a ‘Pay it Forward’ scheme, where people can buy one of the café’s popular £3.50 lunch deals and are then given a voucher to either leave behind the counter for when someone comes in who needs one, or take away to give to someone who needs it. Georgie then offered the café on a Monday evening to Sue Ali, who helped to set up the Scouse Kitchen in Liverpool. Now living in Wells, Sue wanted to see if something similar could be set up in the city.

Wells Art Practice is a social enterprise set up in 2017 by Molly Briton and Paul Crummay as a way to make sure that, whatever your financial means, you had the ability to join in with groups and classes. The pair run weekly drop-in classes (which are pay as you go) and also additional workshops and classes. We’ve listed a few here, but head to their website for the full list, which is regularly updated. The Practice also offers affordable studio space and access to a Drawing Scheme that enables artists to gain funding to help with their costs. Around 20 people have already used the Scheme, and some are now working full-time as artists. The Practice hosted a hugely successful pop-up gallery at the old Phase 8 shop in the Market Place last December, and are always on the look out for venues for another one. Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 trees and shrubs need to be planted, with deer fencing installed around some of the larger trees. The gates will open at 10am and close at 4pm, and everybody is welcome to come and learn about what the Food Forest Project are doing, plant some trees, have a cup of tea, and sample some locally made cakes! Bring a spade if you have one, but some will be provided. There will be parking on-site, as well as dry areas and activities for children. People are welcome to come and go as they please. To get there, just follow the signs to Rock Farm (near Mendip Fireplaces), Shepton Mallet, BA4 4JE – past Mendip Fire Places on the left, first right by Quarry House, almost immediate right to Rock Farm.

ollowing on from the first successful Shepton Mallet Food Forest plant up, the Food Forest Project will be holding another event, this time at Rock Farm, near Mendip Fireplaces, in Shepton Mallet. Gavin and Erica Mayall, owners of Rock Farm, are very concerned about climate breakdown, and social inequality. They have asked the Food Forest Project to plant a two-acre community food forest on their land to help cut carbon, create habitat, and produce free food for local people. Once planted, the food forest will be open to the community during harvest times, giving local people the opportunity to go and pick all sorts of fruit, nuts, herbs, and, when mature enough, vegetables as well. The Food Forest Project is a not-for-profit organisation set up to plant diverse spaces of food-producing woodland. SPOTLIGHT ON AGE UK
Local Age UK Somerset classes aim to keep older people steady on their feet
W
hether you are generally fit and active or if you sometimes feel unsteady on your feet, the local independent charity Age UK Somerset aims to offer a class that will suit you. Physical activity has a huge positive effect on health at any age, but among older adults, doing more can have a life-changing impact. From general fitness classes like their fun and upbeat movement to music groups, to their falls prevention sessions, ‘Stay Strong Stay Steady’ and easy-to-learn Tai Chi Qi Gong, the charity focuses on keeping local residents active and independent. ‘Mature Movers’ is a fun, fairly active movement to music class. Led by an experienced teacher, it is great for improving balance, co-ordination and strength. It is held at the Parish Room, St Michael’s Church in Shepton Mallet on Thursdays at 10.30am, and everyone is welcome. There is no need to book. Tai Chi is as effective as most high-impact exercises at improving circulation and co-ordination and decreasing blood pressure. As importantly for

older people, it’s extremely effective at improving physical balance, and vitally important for helping to prevent falls in later life. The Tai Chi Qi Gong class in Wells is held every Friday in the Town Hall at 2.45pm and there is no need to book. The Qi Gong form is very easy to learn, and the movements can be done seated or standing. ‘Stay Strong Stay Steady’ classes are evidencebased falls-prevention sessions with proven results. These specially developed classes, held in partnership with Somerset County Council, are led by qualified instructors and help to prevent falls by improving balance and rebuilding muscle strength. If you feel less steady than you used to, or perhaps you have a family history of Osteoporosis or Parkinson’s, it may be worthwhile finding out whether the class could help. here was only going to be one game worthy of the top spot this month, and that’s Doom Eternal. The fifth game in the Doom series (and we’re old enough to remember playing the first one), Eternal brings us new weapons – in the shape of a shoulder-mounted flamethrower, a wrist-mounted blade and the worryingly named ‘Meat Hook’! There are also a whole load of new demons to blow into pieces too, and the ability to not only take part in a brand-new 2 versus 1 Battle Mode, but also the chance to drop into other players’ games and play as a demon. There’s no game series quite as explosive as Doom, and Eternal is shaping up to be the best version yet.
