kay, so we’re not quite there yet, but one of the joys of running a bimonthly magazine out at the start of November is that I’m probably one of the first people to wish you a Happy Christmas! It’s fair to say that 2020 has been a bit of an odd one (and that’s probably putting it rather mildly), but it’s been heartwarming to see the way communities have pulled together to help those less fortunate. Never does that seem more important than at this time of year. And despite everything, there are some events still being held, and some people determined to carry on regardless. This issue we’ve got events, news, features and the ultimate Christmas Gift Guide. If you’re struggling with what presents to get this year, then check out our spread of festive delights – I’m very confident that you’ll find the perfect gift idea nestled away on those two pages. Theatre benefits from funding
I
t was good news for the Strode Theatre recently, as they were one of the many arts-related organisations that were awarded a grant from Arts Council England as part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Recovery Fund. The Strode was awarded £246,911 which will ensure that when the theatre relaunches in 2021, it will be back stronger than ever. Robin Peters, the Manager of Strode Theatre, said: “The funding will help to remodel the organisation more or less from the ground up, and then reopen again, in hopefully the spring of next year. It’s a real lifeline for us, and helps to mitigate some of the damage that Coronavirus, lockdown and everything else has done to the theatre in the last six months.
“Actually, a lot of the work that will happen in the next six months was on the cards for the next two or three years, so the timeline has shrunk considerably. “I don’t have a clear plan of what the reopened Strode Theatre looks like, but I’ve got the opportunity now to go on that journey. Refurbishment work completed at Merriman Park The 0-10 year-old play area in Merriman Park was reopened on October 19 after a major refurbishment program. Cllr. Claire Axten said: “Opening this brand new play area is the culmination of years of planning by the Merriman Park Group and Street Parish Council. We hope that children and families will enjoy it for many years to come.”
“Play parks are so important for children and families,” said Cllr. Andy Leafe. “They are a free outdoor activity, and a place to socialise and have fun. With all that is happening in our current climate, we must still find reasons to have amusement and enjoyment. Hence the reason for this important investment.”
Snippets Greenbank staff keeping busy Greenbank Pool may be closed, but the staff have still been busy. We heard that they took over the Millfield School pool during the summer to requalify and pick up some new covid-related skills. It’s all to ensure that when the pool finally does reopen next year, they’ll be fully trained up and ready to welcome you back.

Salvation Army launch Baby Bank service in Street The Street branch of the Salvation Army has recently started up a Baby Bank in the village to help new families. Working closely with the Health Visitor team they put together boxes containing newborn

clothing, nappies, toiletries, toys and baby blankets. They rely on donations for this, so if you have anything you can offer, or would like to find out more, message them through their Facebook page.

The Community Fridge was opened by Glastonbury’s Mayor, Jon Cousins.
Community Fridge now open in Glastonbury Glastonbury has officially opened its own Community Fridge to provide food for those who need it, while at the same time reducing food waste. Located outside the Town Hall, food is collected daily from local supermarkets and then placed on the shelves and in the chillers. People are free to leave donations of fresh fruit and vegetables, unopened tins and packets within their use-by date. The Fridge also has a supply of sanitary products and, occasionally, toiletries, washing capsules and even fresh flowers!
It’s open 8am-4pm every day and is regularly cleaned by volunteers. The Glastonbury Community Fridge was set up and run by Gina Ty-Wharton and Ellise Toop, who both want to thank all the local businesses and people that have donated. They’re always looking for donations to maintain the smooth running of the fridge, so if you would like to donate then please contact them at admin@ glastonburycommunityfridge. com for details. Shop releases its own TV show! RGtv is a brand-new streaming show on YouTube, which launched at the start of November and is releasing new episodes every week until December 20. It’s a collaboration between the Rogues Gallery shop on Glastonbury High Street and Big Smokin’ Joe, with features on art, music and life in the town. You’ll find the show on YouTube (search for RGtv) and we love what we’ve seen so far, but we feel duty bound to inform you that the language can, on occasion, be a bit on the sweary side.

Snippets A Plan for the town Shepton Mallet Town Council recently published its first Town Plan, a document that sets out the strategic vision for the Council for the next four years. The plan is based on feedback from hundreds of residents. www.sheptonmallet-tc.gov.uk
Bird Trail Seven Shepton artists have worked together to create a unique art trail in the town. The Bird Trail runs along the whole of the High Street and features seven varieties of bird.

Alternative planned for Lantern Festival The Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival has cancelled its usual Parade but is hopeful of finding a way to display some of the many wonderful lanterns made by the community in previous years. In particular they are keen to give the great Shepton Ram, made by

The Write Stuff for Shepton Mallet Local writer Polly Hall is having her first book published this December. Titled The Taxidermist’s Lover, it’s a passionate tale of a woman obsessed with her partner’s taxidermy creations, as well as their turbulent relationship. It’s a dark, brooding tale, and we were lucky enough to read an early edition of the book, so would happily recommend it – especially to fans of dark, Gothic romance. Choir on trial A wonderful annual commemoration concert full of music and readings, The Trials and Tribulations of the Vicars Choral takes a personal approach this year, with a show all about the Choral themselves. With stories and songs spanning the centuries, the concert is the perfect tribute for a choir that, incredibly, was started 676 years ago.

Company with Cupcakes Daniels Café on Queen Street in Wells has just launched a brand new initiative called Cupcake and Company. Working with the Wells-based mental health charity Heads Up, the aim of Cupcake and Company is to create a safe space for people to chat, get advice and (naturally) have one of Daniels’ delicious cupcakes, too.
Cupcake and Company was launched on Monday, November 2, and will be hosted at Daniels every other Monday from 10am until Midday. The sessions will be run by Heads Up’s Charity Director Bridget Harvey, and have been supported by Health Connections Mendip. Check out the Daniels Facebook page (@DanielsCafeWells) for more info.

Wells resident Ross Young has been writing children’s poems and stories for the past 50 years, and has now recently published his first book, Billy Bear’s Flying Adventure, on October 29. “I wrote my first Billy adventure for my children in 1978 when they were seven and five while recovering from a back operation. They thoroughly enjoyed it and it inspired me to write more. “Billy’s adventures are what I would call ‘traditional’ children’s stories aimed at 3-7 year olds, where Billy has great ambitions and his friends all come together to help him achieve them. There are obstacles in the way but with their help, he overcomes them. It’s all

THE SHOW MUST GO ON The future of the Wells Film Centre seems a lot more secure, thanks to the support of local filmgoers…
T
he entertainment business is one of the ones that’s been hit the hardest due to covid, and nothing proves that more than the Wells Film Centre. Despite reopening in July, strict guidelines and constantly moving release dates meant they were forced to close again in September. The good news is that Sally Cooper, the owner of the Wells Film Centre, recently announced that they would be reopening again on December 4, and the great people of Wells and the surrounding area have been a big part of that. “So we’ve had a lot of people that wanted to donate and help us out in these times,” says Sally. “The only thing we can think of doing was to set a page up on the JustGiving site.”
The fundraising page is just a part of the Wells Film Centre’s Save our Cinema campaign. Head to their website (www. wellsfilmcentre.co.uk) and you can also name a seat or auditorium, or purchase a gift voucher to use when they reopen. The support so far has been amazing, with (at the time of writing) over 150 people donating nearly £7,000, many of which also leave messages of support, too. Sally says: “All the money goes towards the bills and staffing costs to ensure we can stay open for them. “People have been so lovely. Going on the site and Facebook and reading how lovely people are being… it just really keeps you going. We’ve had emails and phone calls, and they are all so positive.”

Spotting Your Pet’s Signs of Ageing
O
n average, dogs live until 12 years old, cats until 17 and rabbits until 10. However, all these species can live beyond these averages for many years! As our pets age, their needs change, and we may need to adapt their lifestyle to suit them. But how to spot when your pet is showing signs of ageing? Behavioural changes are common. These include signs of ‘slowing down’, less playfulness or keenness to exercise, and even aggression. Loss of hearing and eyesight are common. You may notice aggression when approached unexpectedly, or less response to commands. Unexplained weight loss may indicate underlying health problems. Dental disease progresses with age. You may notice smelly breath, changes when your pet eats or a brown discolouration to their teeth. Incontinence. If your dog is exercising less or your cat is using a scratch post less, you may notice their nails need trimming more often! If you notice any of the above changes in your pet, it’s important to get a health check with a vet. These symptoms could simply be due to age but some may be indicative of medical conditions common with older animals. SPOTLIGHT ON SOMERSET LOCAL FOOD Locally produced food delivered right to your door…
S
omerset Local Food is a Community Benefit Society based in Glastonbury, which is owned and financed by the local community. You may not have heard of them before, but they have been supporting local food growers and producers since 2002, delivering top quality local food right to your door via their website.
A sound investment At the core of the society is the ethos of promoting ecological farming methods to protect our natural environment – and they’ve provided £1.5 million to the local Somerset Economy since they were set up. Also, as everything is owned by the community, everyone who’s a shareholder benefits. Shares cost £1 each, and you need to buy a minimum of 100 shares. It’s a fantastic way to help finance a very worthy group as well as a great investment, too.
You’ll find the Somerset Local Food website at www.localfooddirect.co.uk, where you can browse through a wide range of fresh food and household products – everything from traditional pork sausages from Stephens the Butcher in Glastonbury through to environmentally friendly toothbrushes. “The lockdown has been one of our busiest periods ever and we have already built on our loyal customer base,” says team member Ian Liversidge. “More people have discovered produce from the local area and some of those who attended the local markets to support food from the locality are now also regulars. “We already had a base of vulnerable customers and now we support many more and provide a safe and caring service with our team of friendly drivers. Somerset Local food belongs to and is a big part of the community and continues to grow.”

CHRISTMAS AT THE BISHOP’S PALACE W
e think it’s fair to say that people might be struggling to feel especially Christmassy this year. Thankfully though, The Bishop’s Palace in Wells have pulled out all the stops to create a Winter Wonderland that’s guaranteed to warm the chilliest cockles. The rooms of the medieval Palace with be beautifully decorated with a variety of themes (from medieval to Victorian), and the Entrance Hall will have a roaring fire.
There will also be a Christmas-themed Family Trail, which will lead you through the house and gardens and end up at a traditional nativity scene. Also outside will be a Christmas Café, complete with German Market-inspired food and drink! Possibly saving the best til last, there’s a visit to Father (and Mother) Christmas and, on selected days, costumed readings of A Christmas Carol by members of Wells Theatre Company. www.bishopspalace.org.uk

GETTING SPORTY WITH RUGBY TOTS Y
ou may think that teaching your toddlers to play Rugby would be a recipe for disaster, but the good news is that Rugbytots couldn’t actually be safer. And it’s a lot of fun, too. Here’s how it works: the sessions are split into three age groups (2-3.5 years, 3.5-5 years and 5-7 years), and each age group has a list of fun activities suited to their age. The common thread running through all the groups though is Rugby – specifically, learning how to catch, pass and kick the ball. Pre-school kids will do activities based around colours, shapes and counting, and Rugby-specific skills are added gently, and kids will use sponge foam balls to build their confidence. Older groups will be introduced to some of the basic rules of Rugby, but

always with the emphasis on fun. As well as the obvious health benefits, courses such as these have shown to help children with their confidence and imagination, too. There are sessions all over the country, but locally there’s one in Baltonsborough on a Saturday and another in Wells on a Sunday. If you’re looking for something a little different to do with the kids, then might we suggest the Toddler Sessions at Happy Hooves Ponies? They’re based in Cranmore, just outside of Shepton Mallet, and a two-hour session costs £12. For that you get the opportunity to explore the outdoors, play in a mud kitchen, arts and crafts and (naturally) loads of time playing with the ponies. JAZZ RETURNS TO THE RED BRICK BUILDING W
e’ve always believed that music will beat the odds, no matter what, and one recent musical success story has been the return of Jazz to the Red Brick Building. Singer Sarah Griffiths is just one part of the Red Brick Red Hot Jazz Club, who, along with the rest of the band, bring a smooth mix of classic and less-familiar songs to an eager, music-loving public. “We’ve had two amazing shows so far – the last one sold out,” said Sarah. “The new way of doing gigs in a pandemic means all tables must be booked in advance, including food orders. There is a limit to the amount of tables allowed because of current
restrictions, so that everyone is socially distanced and well back from the stage. “But within these new restrictions, we’ve had so much fun and laughter playing and listening to live music again. Everyone’s safety is paramount, and as long as we all play by the rules and look after each other, live music is safe.” On Friday, November 20 they have Jack Challenor, a singer and pianist from Bristol playing with the band. And then there will be a Christmas Jazz Special on Friday, December 18. Glastonbury-based Mr Keep Calm (made up of Gary Smith and James Bennett) have been releasing a new music video on YouTube on the first of the month since June – and it finishes on the first of December. It’s a mixture of brand-new music and remixed originals, and they’ve all be recorded and filmed in isolation during the pandemic. There’s a really good mix of music on their YouTube page, so check it out for yourself by searching for ‘Mr Keep Calm The New Stuff’
Loud and Proud Did you know that the GFM radio station now has its own weekly Punk show? The show’s called Wrong Speed, and it goes out every Sunday night at 9pm. The presenter, Joe Thompson, is also in the band Hey Colossus and manages to find the time to run a record label, too. Wrong Speed is a weekly hour dedicated to the underground. An eclectic mix, from crushing Hardcore Punk to Acid House via Belgian Library music and digital Dub. The show is dedicated to all those who dig through the crates worldwide. November/December 2020

his mini exhibition Inspiration in Isolation showcases the work members of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen have created in Lockdown. Each piece will be accompanied with some words from the maker to gain some insight into the inspiration behind it.
Inspiration in Isolation will run from November 10 through until December 10 and will be in the front section of the Guild’s Wells Gallery at 23A Broad Street. The Last Word
If you want the complete picture on life in Glastonbury then who better to ask than Vicki Steward, the creator of the hugely popular blog, Normal for Glastonbury? How did the blog start? And what was your thinking behind it? It started in April 2016 when someone asked me to write a blog for them. I thought I would start a blog myself so I could make all the mistakes on that first because nobody would read it. And so I wrote a piece called What’s Normal for Glastonbury and I put it out on Facebook. I only expected my mum and perhaps 10 of my friends to take an interest, but 2,000 people read it within 48 hours! I felt like it gave me a responsibility to write more about the town, and it just grew from there.
How long have you been in Glastonbury? I first came here on the eighth of the eighth 1988 for a free Festival on the side of the Tor. Then I finally moved to the town in 1993.
And Glastonbury felt like home to you? It’s the only place I’ve ever felt normal in. I’m always affectionate about Glastonbury in the blog. I find that the way the town is covered is usually tired jokes about lentils and sandals that aren’t even accurate.
How many people come to the blog? Adding all the different platforms together, I reckon I’ve got about 40,000 followers. A lot of people say they like my blog because it’s honest.
And where can people find it? They can get it from me via the website (https:// normalforglastonbury.uk), and I’ve been delivering them in Glastonbury on my electric bicycle! You can also pick up a copy at the Glastonbury Information Centre, too.
So you offer a delivery service in town? Yeah, and then people can get it signed!
Where can people find you online? There’s the Normal for Glastonbury site, which has over 100 pieces on it. And We Are Normal for Glastonbury, a members-only community which I set up, and people can subscribe to that for £20 a year. That gives them some exclusive stuff every month, and it also helps support me to carry on doing all the work I do to promote Glastonbury. I’m trying to make Normal for Glastonbury a little island of civility and kindness – I’d rather focus on finding common ground than emphasising difference.
What was it that made you decide to do the book? People have been suggesting it for ages, and then lockdown happened so I collated the best of my writing into an ebook. It ended up being much more popular than I expected, so the paperback was the next logical step.
