Complete funerals from only £1,499

We don’t just do funerals, we celebrate life Funeral Services We at Wells Funeral Services offer affordable funerals to the population of Mendip and beyond. Since setting up the business in September 2016, we pride ourselves on delivering funerals that people want; establishing our client’s needs, wants and budget is of paramount importance to us as a business. We like to get to know our families, and so for us that means a trip to Wells market, and to be visible to one and all on a Wednesday from January to November you will find one or

often both of us on our market stall. Reaching out to help with advice, and we like to talk about anything and everything, it’s more getting to know you. Why sit in an office waiting for the phone to ring, when after all people like to see who they are dealing with and get some good old-fashioned banter! When selecting a funeral director, try to use an independent like me and look at their reviews – either on their own website or on Google reviews. You’re only as good as the last funeral delivered.

Funeral planning and plans

Funeral plans can be paid for in full, or spread over 1 to 10 years, with deposits starting from just £80.

The City of Wells Lions Club President

This is my first year as President of the City of Wells Lions, which I feel is a great honour

6 I moat boat races

Welcome to the annual Wells Lions’ Moat Boat Races! This year’s Annual Moat Boat Races are the 18th we’ve held, and once again bring people together in an atmosphere of competitive fun. It wouldn’t take place if it wasn’t for the countless hours of planning and discussion that have taken place between members of Wells Air Cadets, Wells Lions, the Council, local business sponsors, and the many volunteers who are determined to make the day a joyous one for all the family, young and old. Lions Clubs International was founded 102 years ago. Our purpose is to empower individuals to serve their local communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions Clubs. This is my first year as President of the City of Wells Lions, which I feel is a great honour. Working with an active group of

local Lions, who give their time and effort freely to raise funds for local charities and good causes, gives me a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment. You can help us today by dropping money into our collecting buckets. Beyond that, are you (or do you know someone) who is searching for an opportunity to make a real difference? Someone who wants to widen their circle of friends, in order to stay connected. Someone who wants to give back and make a difference locally, as part of an organisation which is successful in helping those people who need support. Together we are ordinary people who can do amazing things. Please talk to our team on the Lions stand or contact me directly on 07468 317217 or by email on cityofwellslions@ gmail.com.

The 646th Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells

I have been involved as a boat builder and a competitor in these races

8 I moat boat races

Welcome to the Bishop’s Palace and Moat, in the beautiful City of Wells. On behalf of myself and the Mayoress Holly, I hope you have a wonderful day at the annual Wells Moat Boat Races. The walls, gate house and moat at the Bishop’s Palace were built in the 14th Century. They were commissioned by Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury. Moats were of course built to keep enemies and sometimes communities away from those inside. Therefore this event is a beautiful tradition that has been kept up for the past 18 years, when our community takes to the moat and reclaims it for the people! Wells is the jewel in Somerset’s crown and we have a beautiful City, Cathedral, Museum, High Street and, of course, a Palace to explore. I hope visitors will take a good

look around between races or even better, come back to visit us again soon. Over the years, I have been involved as a boat builder and a competitor in these races. However, in all of my past involvement I never once experienced a victory. On the one hand I would like to keep my feet on dry land this year; on the other, if there is a boat out there that looks exceptionally fast and can carry a fifth wheel, I may be tempted to join them! To the Wells Lions Club and Wells Air Cadets, thank you for putting on such a fabulous event. To the supporters, let me thank you for coming out today and supporting this wonderful event. To the boat builders, thank you for building such an impressive array of seaworthy craft. To the competitors, I hope you have a successful and, hopefully, dry race!

Cathedrals exist to connect, and we are delighted to do so

This message brings greetings from Wells Cathedral. Every day we pray for this City and all its people – there is such a wonderful range of human life here. For the Cathedral this has been a very good year so far – Wake Up Wells brought thousands here, reflecting all the activity of the City. And now in July and August we are hosting Wells Art Contemporary, an international display of

modern art. People come here from right across the local community. The Cathedral School and other schools too have very close links. Visitors to the Cathedral from across the UK and the wider world support local businesses, and as Dean I am delighted to be involved with Wells and Somerset life. Both Cathedrals and communities exist to connect, so very warm greetings from your Cathedral!

Welcome message

A message from the bishop of bath and wells The Rt Revd Peter Hancock

I hope all those taking part have lots of fun. Please cheer as loud as you can to encourage those who will be paddling hard on the day

12 I moat boat races

I am delighted to welcome you all to the City of Wells Moat Boat Races, and I look forward to meeting lots of people on the day. This is the 18th year of this wonderful and very enjoyable event, which is one of the highlights of the Wells annual calendar. For competitors, spectators and supporters alike it is always a fun occasion. I hope all those taking part have lots of fun. Please cheer as loud as you can to encourage those who will be paddling hard on the day. It is my pleasure to nominate as my chosen charity the Wells Connect Centre. The Connect Centre sits at the heart of much that is happening in Wells and is based in the former library in the Portway. It is a centre of community action, committed to the discovery of hope, meaning and strength through connecting people. The Connect Centre is a multi-purpose facility for the whole community, and offers, among other things, a community outreach for people with various needs,

such as homelessness, addiction and mental health problems. It does this through ‘Root Connections’ a gardening project producing healthy food which helps to fund work being done to combat homelessness; by offering affordable and accessible counselling for adults and young people experiencing a range of personal problems; and by providing a drop-in session for young people, developing their skills and supporting them in the challenges that face them. I am encouraged by the good work Connect do, and I’m delighted that they will benefit from this year’s Moat Boat Races. Like many other organisations, they need financial support to enable their work to go forward. I encourage you to give generously to this worthy cause. My thanks are also with all who have organised today, especially to the Wells Lions and the Wells Air Cadets. They put so much work into planning and running this event and they deserve our thanks. With my very best wishes to you all.

Stallholders

Check out our stallholders

The Wells Lions would like to thank all the stallholders for helping to make the Moat Boat Races day so special. There are over 60 stalls around the Bishop’s Eye plus lots more in the park – there’s a wide variety to choose from, too. And keep an eye out for the charity stalls we have dotted throughout the area as well. From commercial stalls selling a wide range of artisan crafts to a fine choice of food stalls and plenty of rides and slides to keep the kids entertained, there’s something here for everyone. If you head into the park then there’s music in the bandstand throughout the day, and you can enjoy a beer or cider from our local micropub, Just Ales.

Thank you The Wells Moat Boat Races committee thanks all our sponsors, organisations and individuals whose help and support has made today possible. With all our costs covered through such generous sponsorship, every penny you donate today will find its way to a worthy cause. CITY OF WELLS

HEAR YE!

Len Sweales, Wells’ very own Town Crier, shares his own thoughts on the Moat Boat Races… It’s August Bank Holiday in Wells, and what do you get? A plethora of oarsmen all trying not to get wet while sculling the water on the Palace Moat, and doing their best to keep their crafts afloat, too! It’s all about teamwork that keeps you ahead. Get it wrong and you’ll find yourself having water to tread. But ultimately it’s not a matter of just going for glory, it’s the charity fundraising that’s the real story here. The Wells Lions and Air Cadets work hard all year on this special event that brings much good cheer. So enjoy yourselves. There’s plenty to do, not just at the races but the charity stalls, too. And whether the climate is inclement or sunny, loosen your purse strings and donate lots of money! Wells is a wonderful place, and its citizens are always generous and giving, so let’s all support the Lions and all that they do so that they can continue to provide this fantastic event for all of you. So that’s it for this year from this fat man in green. When the going gets tough, I will nowhere to be seen!

Air Cadets

A message from Wells air cadets Flight Lieutenant John Blackburn, Officer Commanding – 1955 (City of Wells) Air Cadets

We will always welcome more young people looking for a bit of a challenge

22 I moat boat races

A warm welcome to the 2019 Wells Moat Boat Races from the cadets and staff of 1955 (City of Wells) Squadron – let’s all have a great afternoon! As you will no doubt know, we run this event alongside our great friends and supporters, City of Wells Lions Club. The staff from the squadron will look after all the logistics of getting people onto and off the rafts during the races – cadets can be a little bit ‘military’ and like to be organised. We will shout if needed – and we can really shout! One of our roles during the run up to this event is to try and get a fly-past to add to the afternoon spectacle. This year we have again been successful – keep an eye out for the fly-past of a C-47 Dakota (see

separate details about the aircraft on page 25). It is dependent on weather, and hopefully will happen at some time between 2-4pm. It will be spectacular. Our Wells Squadron is running pretty well, but we will always welcome more young people looking for a bit of a challenge – there is a recruiting page too in this programme, giving more details. We are always seeking extra adult staff too, so if any of you grown-ups out there fancy helping out then you would be most welcome to pop along for a chat. Time for me to sign off. You may see me during the day – I’ll be the one in uniform screaming ‘C’mon Wells’ during the races – for which I do not apologise at all. Have a great afternoon.

FANCY A CHALLENGE?

Looking for something interesting to do with your spare time? We've got just the thing for you...

Are you aged between school year 8 and 17½, enjoy a challenge and the chance to meet new friends? If so, then joining the Royal Air Force Air Cadets – and specifically the 1955 (City of Wells) Squadron – could be just what you are looking for. The squadron meets every Monday and Thursday evening between 7pm and 9.30pm, where a varied and interesting programme of activities is organised and overseen by the hard-working staff every night. The squadron gets involved with several civic events within the City – the Moat Boat Races event being a wonderful example. The Air Cadet organisation is also a huge supporter of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. The Air Cadets are supported by the Royal Air Force, who supply us with our uniforms, locations for various camps, and cover our building and some running costs. We find that our cadets, over time, will become more confident, and most have commented that being a cadet in their teens certainly helped them when they progressed onto college, university and jobs. So please feel free to contact us via email at 1955@ aircadets.org. Or pop along to one of our parade evenings for a look around and a chat. We are located at the Harry Patch Joint Cadet Centre, Webbs Close, Wells. We are also looking for Adult Staff wanting a challenge too, so please get in touch if you think that might be you.

REACH FOR THE SKIES! We've got a very special flypast planned for the Moat Boat Races day, featuring the stunning Douglas C-47 Dakota

This aircraft, from the RAF’s iconic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, will be making a fly-past over this event at some time between 2-4pm in the afternoon, weather permitting. The Dakota you will see was originally built in 1942, and had long service with the Royal Canadian Air Force until 1971 – when she joined the BBMF in 1993. The C-47 Dakota was the military version of the popular and reliable Douglas DC-3. Over 10,000 were built, 2,000 of which ended up with British and

www.cityofwellslions.org

Commonwealth Air Forces. The aircraft could carry 28 troops, or 18 casualties and 3 medics in a medical evacuation role. She had a crew of four and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines of around 1,200 hp each. This Dakota was originally only acquired by the BBMF as a training aircraft, helping new pilots to eventually fly the Avro Lancaster. The Dakota was one of only a few of the old-style multiple engine ‘tail dragger’ aircraft, so she was a great stepping stone before pilots moved onto the Lancaster. Over the last few years, ZA947 has become a favourite at air displays, so she is getting to be a popular and busy aeroplane – which means we are very lucky to be seeing her here today!

SOUPER TROOPERS

Meet Wells SOUP, a charity that's both supporting and feeding the Wells community Not many Wells events have supported 55 local charities and good causes. One is Wells SOUP, the grant-giving lunch that hands out four cheques every quarter. SOUP is organised by Wells Independents, and Bowley’s Garage are providing £350 match-funding for the next SOUP which will take place on Saturday, October 5. “Come along,” said Wells Independents city councillor Philip

32 I moat boat races

Welch. “All are welcome. It’s a chance to have fun and enjoy a tasty light lunch while supporting good causes.” The audience pays £5 on the door for a choice of soups, a bread roll and a memorable lunchtime before hearing four charities tell their stories and voting on which should have the biggest of the four cheques. That money is then match-funded – at the last SOUP this was by Wells health practitioners Jenny Hodgson and Rob Parnell. The venue is the Connect Centre at the junction of Chamberlain Street and Portway, Wells. The start time is 1pm but arrive early to get a good seat.

MEN OF SOMERSET This upcoming charity concert features two amazing male choirs

Glastonbury Male Voice Choir and Mendip Male Voice Choir are joining forces to perform an evening of classic choral entertainment to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West. These two highly acclaimed local choirs, who rarely perform together, are staging a joint concert to support Children’s Hospice South West which provides vital care for children with life-limiting conditions.

This unique event is being organised by the City of Wells Lions Club, and promises to be a very special night of entertainment with two of the best male choirs you’ll see. The concert will take place at St Cuthbert’s Church in Wells on Saturday, October 5 from 7.30pm onwards. Tickets cost just £10 per person (or £15 for VIP seating, but there’s limited availability for those) and are available from The Swan Hotel, Wells Museum, St Cuthbert’s Church itself, or online at the Eventbrite website (www.eventbrite.co.uk). Doors open at 7pm for this event, and there is a full bar and refreshments available, too.
