Welcome We’re delighted to welcome everyone back to our city, on Sunday October 14th, for our sixth annual Wells Food Festival, celebrating everything that’s good about our local artisan food and drink. New for this year, we can proudly announce that we have more stalls than ever, offering new, delicious products; a freshly revamped Discovery Zone where you and your family can learn, experience and receive advice on a whole range of topics; our own Farmyard complete with animals, poultry, farmers and learning activities; the Sauerkrautathon, where you can have a go at fermentation and perhaps even participate in a Guinness record! In the morning you’re invited to the Town Hall for a major debate ‘It’s Time We Talked about Local Food’, to explore how we can make more of Somerset’s wonderful food, drink and landscape. As usual, entry is free. It’s a huge event but you’ll find plenty of spaces to sit and relax, and lots of ways to keep the children entertained. So welcome to Wells, one and all. We all hope that you have a wonderful day!

Introduction

OUR HISTORY Holding a food festival in Wells was regarded as more than a little crazy back in 2012. And perhaps that’s the reason why a small group of single-minded local volunteers, most of whom are still involved today, decided to ignore the doubters and have a go. Six years later, and Wells Food Festival is firmly established in the Somerset calendar, attracting upwards of 15,000 visitors last year, to browse over 150 food and drink stalls, all set in the extraordinary surroundings of England’s smallest city. In the early days, The festival was confined to the medieval Market Place, but now it continues along the Palace moat walk, into the vast Recreation Ground and this year, for the first time, into the beautiful grounds of the Bishop’s Palace itself. A tiny team of less than 10 volunteers set about arranging this year’s event almost as soon as last year’s was over – booking and locating stallholders, marquees, electrics, safety equipment, recruiting stewards, raising the £15,000 sponsorship we need just to break even, arranging insurance, rubbish disposal… the list goes on. It’s a mountain of work and tiny details, but if you have a great day then we do too. Call us crazy? We’re happy to agree!

OUR PURPOSE From the very start, we have stuck firmly to our prime aim: to showcase and celebrate the high-quality work of our county’s artisan food and drink producers and manufacturers. By attracting such a large audience, we are proud to play our part in boosting our stallholders’ businesses, the local economy, the city’s prestige and the tourism on which the whole area depends. And, we hope to give each of our visitors a fulfilling day, packed with surprises, fun and learning.

What's On

‘IT’S TIME WE TALKED ABOUT LOCAL FOOD’ In Somerset, we are intensely proud of our local food and drink; they are essential and vital parts of our county’s economy. The question is: Why and how can they become central to Somerset’s cultural identity, and what distinguishes Somerset from the rest? Our culture. How would it benefit our farmers, our producers, our independent retailers, our tourism, our economy, our employment, our people? At 11am in the Town Hall, an important debate will open. Highly respected speakers will briefly address the question from four different points of view: farming, the business world, producers and the landscape. The debate will then be

Wells Food Festival 2018

thrown open to the public. That’s when we all will learn, discuss and generate a range of concrete, workable ideas that, among many others, Wells City of Culture can take forward as part of its presentation to Government.

CHARLIE BIGHAM’S DISCOVERY ZONE Charlie Bigham’s Discovery Zone returns, and this year includes the 15th century Bishop’s Barn. A key focus is examining how to ensure a thriving countryside while safeguarding the supply of quality, healthy foods. Providing an opportunity for all the family to roll up their sleeves and get involved, there will be interactive areas including: Field to Fork – looking at the ‘Best of British’ and food miles.

wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

What's On Stop by the ‘Soapbox’ where local producers will take to the stage throughout the day; Waste Not, Want Not – exploring how we can combat food waste, from plastic recycling to turning waste into fuel; and Food of the Future – investigating sustainable food sources such as seaweed and production methods like aquaponics, welcoming local businesses including Ebb Tides and BioAqua. A dedicated Orchard Area will be set up with an apple press, giving a glimpse into Somerset’s cider industry.

TOWN HALL

THE ROYAL BATH AND WEST OF ENGLAND SOCIETY FARMYARD AREA

PHOTOGRAPHY DEMONSTRATION

The Festival is delighted to welcome The Royal Bath & West of England Society to be a part of the Charlie Bigham’s Discovery Zone. The Bath & West Farm Yard will demonstrate a range of agricultural activities to promote local food, help consumers learn about farming, where their food comes from and the challenges that the farmer faces to get food to our plates. We hope the presence of our farming friends and farm animals will help the audience participate, not just spectate. Be sure to come along to the Bath & West Farm Yard and say hello to the animals!

wellsfoodfestival.co.uk

The Town Hall will host stalls from local artisan craftsmen. You’ll find unique handcrafted wooden products from Hamwood Crafts, a lovely selection of hand-thrown domestic ceramics by local potter, Ella Phillips, beautiful hand-poured candles from Echo Candles based deep in Somerset and great tasting and unusual tea from the Leafy Tea Company. Find out more about local clubs and societies who will be exhibiting in the Council Chamber.

From recipe books and magazines to instagram and adverts, the world of food photography is something we are now all very familiar with. Learn the tricks of the trade, behind-the-scenes tips and basic camera workings to achieve visually appetising content with food photographer, Neil White and food stylist, Helen Upshall. Join them as they take ingredients from the market and talk you through building up each element to create images good enough to eat! Workshop 1 is at 1pm, and Workshop 2 is at 2:30pm.
