Getting the Abbey Habit This year’s Night of the Abbey event is definitely one not to miss…

The Avalon Recorder Consort opens the stage at 6.30pm, followed by Americana-influenced James Slater and instrumental guitar wizard, Pete Izzard. There will be a variety of on-site catering from our own café as well as food stalls to suit all tastes. The bar will be open from 5pm, and prices will be kept as low as possible. Our main sponsors for 2019 are once again The Godney Gathering and Hawthorns Hotel Glastonbury. Without their support it would be very difficult to continue to grow the event and we appreciate their support again this year. lastonbury Abbey’s end-of-season celebration, Night at the Abbey, is set to be bigger and better than ever in 2019 with acts coming from all over the country to play within the illuminated abbey ruins. Doors will open at 5pm on Friday, August 30, with the music starting at 6pm. The main stage (Dan’s Stage) will host the large, melodic sound of Southampton’s The Dead Freights, Glasgow’s Country Rock ‘n’ Roll-influenced The Strange Blue Dreams, and local favourites Meeking. Brighton’s Hatful of Rain will bring their Bluegrass sound to the Lady Chapel stage, with Bristol singer-songwriter Gavin Osborn & The Comments Section in the middle slot and local Folk duo Uphill & Still opening the stage at 6pm. The King Arthur stage will have a rootsy feel with local trio Invisible Gem opening up, followed by the Dry White Bones, Ma Polaine’s Great Decline and the Dusk Brothers. The Abbot’s Kitchen will once again host acoustic (ish) acts on the night, featuring The Billy

A DAY OF FUN AT MERRIMAN PARK
T
he fifth annual free Merriman Park Fun Day will take place on Saturday, September 7 in Merriman Park, Street. The park is situated just 200 metres off the High Street. The event will start at 1pm and run through to the evening finishing at 10pm. There will be a great variety of stallholders together with music from Oscar Zaky and the U3A Ukulele Band, a bar and refreshments throughout the day plus plenty of displays, rides and activities for the youngsters including two large inflatables. Other attractions include Draca Beordor (Viking Living History), the Glastonbury Dragon Drummers, Cirque de Silk, the Glastonbury Morris Men plus Tor Mini Rugby who will be showing off their skills throughout the afternoon. In the evening there will be live music featuring Twisted Vinyl at 8pm preceded by Bernie Lock and his disco at 6pm to get the evening going.

e are lucky enough to have another poem sent through from last month’s poet, Jane Barnes. This one is called Impressions, and is inspired by Glastonbury Abbey.

I wonder what she’s dreaming of Perhaps she meditates. The sacred grounds within the Abbey Heavens gaits await. The ruins within from ancient times are steeped in history. OPEN DAY AT THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE The St John Ambulance in Charter Way, Wells are having an open afternoon on September 7 from 1.30pm until 3.30pm. It’s the ideal opportunity to pop along, have a look around the building and understand a little bit more about what they do. St John Ambulance also run two Youth groups – Badgers for ages 7-10, and Cadets for ages 11-18. Both groups learn multiple skills in a fun way, as well as First Aid. If your child is interested in joining for a super-low monthly cost, come along and find out what they do in their youth groups. Their Adult unit is always looking to welcome new volunteers, too. he Crispin Community Centre has two wonderful volunteers who occasionally run a second-hand book stall on the High Street market, Street. In September, they will be on the market on the 19th. On September 27, the Centre will hold their annual Macmillan Coffee Morning from 10am-Midday. Everyone is welcome, there will be yummy cakes, games and laughter, with all the money raised going to the Macmillan charity. In light of World Alzheimer’s Day on Saturday 21, the Centre would like to mention that the Alzheimer’s Society hold a free monthly memory café at the Centre on the last Wednesday of the month. FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
T
his year’s Wells Food Festival will have a Food Photography Workshop, with behind-thescenes hints and tips on how to produce visually appetising food photographs. There will also be an exhibition of winning photographs from an exclusive Food Photography competition. There are three categories in the competition based on age: up to 11, 12-17 and 18 and over. Details and the entry form can be found on the website (www.wellsfoodfestival.co.uk). The submission deadline for the photographs is 30 September 30, and food themes could include food preparation, still life, action shots, fruit and vegetables, confectionery, or drinks. The judging panel, headed by food and lifestyle photographer, Neil White, will select the best photograph in each age group, plus highly commended images and ‘Best Picture’ across all
ages. Winners will receive a prize and have their photographs exhibited in Wells Town Hall on the day of the festival. The Wells Food Festival takes place on Sunday, October 13 in the city centre.

SECRET ART SHOW RETURNS
O
n Saturday, August 31, Glastonbury Galleries will be hosting its ever-popular Anonymous Art Show. Now in its fourth year, the exhibition will run until September 21 and will feature over 120 artists exhibiting a huge variety of media. This year the artwork (which totals over 240 pieces) will take the format of an 8x8-inch square canvas, or a mounted, glazed and framed picture of the same size. Each piece of artwork will be on sale at £49, and the artist will not be revealed until after the purchase. Glastonbury Galleries has been operating as a framing business and gallery since 2004. FOOD FESTIVAL TO RETURN TO WELLS

It provides visitors with an exciting opportunity to sample Somerset’s finest food and drink with the medieval backdrop of England’s smallest city. A new art tour for Glastonbury is about to be launched…
C
reated for Somerset Art Weeks, which runs across the county from September 21 to October 6, the Glastonbury Mural trail has been put together by The Krumble Empire’s Kim Von Coels. The original idea was initiated by Glastonbury Town Council to celebrate the murals in town, and based on a smaller trail that was put together a couple of years ago by the Pilgrim Reception Centre. The idea was to add to the existing range of murals in the town (16 in total) with new works of art. First, the locations for the new artworks had to be sourced, and then approval from the wall owners. The whole process was massively collaborative, with Kim uploading pictures of the wall to find artists willing to do the painting, then having them submit a design for approval. New works of art At the time of writing, there are two new murals finished in the town, and there is guaranteed to be at least three more by the time the Art Weeks event starts at the end of this month. There will also be a leaflet available, showing the locations of all the murals, as well as giving you a bit more information on the artists – which you will be able to pick up from the Glastonbury Information Centre. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of positive support I’ve received since creating the Mural Trail Facebook group just three months ago,” says Kim, “and by the amount of money pledged by local businesses for the project. A Festival of Fizz ! The Rolling Cocktail Co are once again about to roll into Wells…

he Rolling Cocktail Company are once again bringing their festival of fizz and fun to Wells for a very special night of the finest drinks and music available. On Friday, October 11 The Wells Gin, Fizz and Swing Festival will take over the Recreation Ground near the Bishop’s Palace to kickstart a weekend of delicious drink and sumptuous food – the Wells Food Festival is just two days later on the 13th. Priory Dental staff take on Wells Cathedral Abseil Challenge
E
very year the team at Priory Dental raise money for various charitable causes. Last year, lead dentist Dr Ryan Hughes fund-raised for The Mouth Cancer Foundation by cycling 500 miles in five days through Italy. This year, the staff at Priory Dental have decided to take the plunge and have signed up to do a 124ft freefall abseil from the North West Tower of Wells Cathedral. This one-off event is being undertaken by a number of local teams, and is organised by SOS Africa and abseil specialists Aardvark Endeavours to raise money for SOS Africa and Wells Cathedral.W More can be found at www. On 5th October, the Priory Dental team will climb the 262 steps to the top of the North West Tower dressed as their favourite characters from children’s books and freefall abseil from a platform on the roof of the tower. The SOS Africa charity was founded by a gap student Matt Crowcombe from Shepton Mallet in 2003 to fund the education of underprivileged South African children, and now operates four education programmes supporting 178 children. Now officially up and running, we caught up with the Help the Homeless Coach Café
F
ollowing on from the feature we did on Star and the Help the Homeless Coach Café (HTHCC) five issues ago, we thought it was about time we caught up with Star and Debs Butterfield, a volunteer who’s come on board to help, to find out what they’ve been up to – as well as their plans for the future. It’s fair to say that they’ve been very busy. In July they set up a café at Ebborways Farm in Priddy for the Priddy Folk Festival – which is where this photo were taken. It was a fantastic experience, helped to raise some funds, and even inspired Star to consider setting up his own event next year. But that’s really only the start of it. Food and drinks were prepared in the coach (for which Star has a Food Hygiene Certificate for, and is registered with the Food Standards Agency) and then brought through into HTHCC’s impressive ‘Event Tent’ – a 40 foot by 20 foot marquee that was donated to the charity. They even had artwork from local artists at the café, including Anthony Butterfield (www.butterfields-art.co.uk) and Garry Sharp’s Reggie the Robot statue.

Every Thursday, Star and the volunteers set themselves up at St John’s Car Park in Glastonbury at 5pm. There they dish out teas, coffees and soup, as well as sandwiches, fruit and anything from the Fareshare box that’s donated to them, usually on a weekly basis. Fareshare (www.fareshare.org.uk) are a charity that distribute surplus food to groups across the country that they can then turn into meals. HTHCC has also received massive support from Nicky and John, the couple that run the Lords of the Wildwood café at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury. As for the future, Star has big plans for the Café, including branching out into Yeovil. He’s also working with the Council in Taunton for a spot there, as well as possibly Minehead, too. Star is also looking for new volunteers with experience in computers and counselling – as well as students training to be counsellors who are looking for some experience.
