Wells Cathedral to host charity screening with organ accompaniment

The showing of this film is a fund-raising event for Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust. The Trust helps young singers from all backgrounds to train in a world-class musical environment. he great 1923 Gothic silent movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is to be shown on the big screen in the atmospheric space of Wells Cathedral on Wednesday, October 17. The musical accompaniment to the film will be improvised on the Cathedral’s great organ by David Bednall, one of Europe’s finest improvisers. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Universal’s 1923 version of Victor Hugo’s novel, was one of the great super-productions of its day. The film makers built a life-size façade of the French cathedral which, along with numerous other sets representing medieval Paris, took a year to build and remained in the Universal lot as an attraction for years. The film starred the silent movie icon, Lon Chaney as Quasimodo, the cathedral’s deformed bell-ringer, not to mention a huge cast of up to 3,500 extras! The film is ultimately a tragic, triumphant story and was a huge success in its time. Lon Chaney’s performance is extraordinary; despite being hampered by a large amount of make-up, a body brace, and a total lack of dialogue, the attention to detail that Chaney puts into his acting is often more stunning that the film’s architecture. WE SHALL OVERCOME CHARITY EVENT
W Every 10 weeks there is a meeting held in Street Parish Rooms at 7pm to look at the burning issues that residents have about living in Street. They are known as PACT meetings – PACT stands for Partners and Community Together. So who are these partners? They are councillors from Street and Mendip and County Councils, the Police, the Fire Service and the Enforcement team of Mendip Council. Members of the public are invited to come and voice their concerns and the ‘Partners’ look at how these concerns can be addressed. At the last meeting three priorities were chosen by vote and the Partners went away to focus on resolving the issues: 1 Anti-social behaviour on The Batch and Goss Drive Play Area – to be addressed by the Police. 2 Anti-social parking and some dangers associated with it in Orchard Road, Grange Road and Clockhouse View – to be addressed by the police. 3 Speeding on the Mead - to be addressed by Street Parish Council using a Speed Indicator Device initially and to look to build up volunteers for Speedwatch. At the next meeting at 7pm on October 24, Partners will report back on progress and residents are urged to come and discuss their priorities for the future. Nina Swift (Councillor for South ward)

e Shall Overcome is a nationwide movement of musicians, artists, activists and community organisers seeking to do something practical to help those affected by austerity and forced to rely on foodbanks. Friday, October 12 sees Glastonbury’s third annual WSO event at the Hawthorns. Organised and MCed by John Diment, it features local musicians and those from farther afield, including BBC 6 Music featured artist Sharon Lazibyrd and upbeat radical acoustic foursome, Batsfeet. The accent is on fun, collaboration and crowd participation. Entry is by donation of non-perishable food for ‘Bridging the Gap’, Glastonbury’s local food bank, although cash donations will also be accepted. So nip down to the supermarket on the way, fill up a few shopping bags and bring them along. Let’s show the world that Glastonbury cares! ome of the best news we heard this month is that the Travestees Comedy Club is returning for another season, starting on Wednesday, October 24. Here’s a breakdown of the line-up for the first show…
Bobby Mair
Bobby Mair is a Canadian stand-up comedian based in London who has come a long way since winning the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year competition in 2012. On our TVs he has appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News, Virtually Famous, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and 8 Out of 10 Cats.
Harriet Kemsley
Harriet started performing stand up in 2011 and within six months she’d won nationwide female comedy competition Funny’s Funny. She has since gigged all over the world at places like The Sky Cat Laughs Comedy
Festival in Kilkenny, Oslo Comedy Festival and Just for Laughs in Montreal.
Scott Bennett
Scott has rapidly established himself as one of the fastest rising stars on the UK circuit. Recently he’s supported both Michael McIntyre and Rob Brydon, and was labelled as ‘One to watch for 2018’ by Chortle.

Now pretty much a staple at Travestees, the inimitable Troy Hawke is back as MC. Homeschooled by an overly nostalgic mother, Troy confronts the 21st century as if waking from a 1930’s time capsule with insightful and hilarious consequences. NEW EVENT AIMS TO BRING GROUPS TOGETHER
T
his month a collective of representatives from many of Shepton’s key festivals and events is launching a new event in Shepton Mallet: Showcase Shepton. The aim of the event is simple – to bring together local groups to showcase what is currently on offer in the town, and to explore future possibilities for collaboration. The event takes place at The Art Bank (the former HSBC bank on Shepton High Street) on Saturday, October 20 from 8-10pm and is free to attend. The evening will include presentations from The Men’s Shed, Literally Shepton, The Lantern Festival, The Festival of Dogs and many other Shepton groups. Drinks and refreshments will be available and there will be plenty of time for networking and meeting some new faces. The event is being run by Future Shepton, a collective of active community members working

A BUSY MONTH AHEAD FOR LOCAL CHARITY

ctober is a very busy month for the Heads Up charity, starting on the 2nd when they launch their weekly Silent Disco experience – which starts at 6pm and goes on to 7.30pm. Music has been proven to help those with dementia, so if that’s something that interests you, contact Bridget at Heads Up on 01749 670667 to book a free place. Then, on October 10, there is an art exhibition of Heads Up clients at the Swan Hotel in Wells. All are welcome, and the event runs from 6-8pm. Following on from that, the Venue in Wells will be hosting a one off open-mic night to support Heads Up. In accordance with World Mental Health Day which is on October 10th this year, the Heads Up team would like to bring together musicians and listeners alike in a bid to raise awareness and funds for the work they do. If you are interested
in playing, or simply want to come and enjoy the music, head down to the Venue from 8pm. Finally, the Wells Men’s Shed group will be launching from its new location in the Heads Up grounds on October 12, 1.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come and find out more about the group, and food and drinks will be provided.

Heads Up provides activity-based learning and development workshops for individuals with mental health needs, including adults with dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities. WAC IS BACK
W
ells Arts Contemporary (WAC) is an annually run international visual arts competition and selling exhibition. This year has enjoyed the highest number of entries to date: a total of 1,397 pieces from 26 different countries. To be selected for the exhibition, every piece of work submitted will have been assessed by a panel of highly respected judges. There are a wide range of cash, exhibition and professional development prizes available. 123 pieces of work, including 11 from Somerset artists, have been successfully shortlisted for the exciting exhibition at The Bishop’s Palace from October 6-21. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to see contemporary visual art from all over the world, ranging from painting and sculptures to photography and film.
There are several other art events taking place in Wells during October to complement WAC. A sculpture trail, Human Nature, in the gardens of The Bishop’s Palace, has been curated by Europe’s foremost fine art foundry, Gallery Pangolin. An exhibition of work from celebrated sculptor, Eleanor Bartlett, will be in Wells Cathedral along with a unique ’Sound Sculpture’ commissioned by WAC. The Somerset Guild of Craftsmen will have some key contemporary craft on display in the Wells & Mendip Museum, while art galleries in the city will be holding new exhibitions. do you dare to be scared? The ultimate Halloween experience has to be The Street at Shepton Mallet Prison, which takes place from October 18-27. It’s a fully immersive scare, horror and action event, and the more you throw yourself into the action, the more you’ll enjoy it! The story behind the event is as follows… During the height of the cold war, the Soviet Union developed a new chemical weapon to use against America. This was released on a small community after intelligence suggested there was a secret government facility operating in the area. The chemical mutated into the ‘Nex infection’ and it was quickly contained to the local area. Residents tried to flee but it was too late. Will you contract the infection? Will you make it out alive? Does the government facility have the cure? In total, you can choose from three immersive activities: See if you can escape being infected by walking ‘The Street’ – which is much trickier than it

W
hen we saw Kim von Coels’ Light painting of Glastonbury Tor we knew we had to get it on our next cover. We also realised we knew nothing at all about Light Painting, so who better to explain than Kim herself… “Light Painting is a photographic technique using very long exposures and different light sources to illuminate a subject, or by adding light to a dark scene. With Light Painting, the creative possibilities are endless as you can pretty much put what’s in your head on a camera sensor. It’s a way of using photography to make and create pictures, rather than to just point and click. My images are not digitally manipulated, what you see is what the camera captures, and there is nothing added to the image in post production. The fun is in capturing it within the actual exposure. “For me, a big part of light painting is exploring at night time. Spending time with my friends and

going on adventures. Lots of adventures. Creating is about enjoying yourself; it’s about feeling connected with the people I am creating with. It’s about spending time with people who inspire me, and appreciating the beauty in us and around us. “My work is often centred around powerful women, and is heavily inspired by my alternative Glastonbury upbringing and surroundings. Prepare early. You can desensitise anxious animals by playing a recording of fireworks, starting at extremely low volumes. Gradually the volume is increased until the pet no longer reacts, even at full volume. This process needs to start weeks to months in advance. Keep pets inside, and noise outside! Ensure cats are home early and kept indoors. Let anxious dogs out to toilet early in the evening before the displays start. Curtains can help muffle noise and bright flashes, and playing the TV or radio at a high volume can cover some of the noise. Create a safe place for anxious pets. Cats may want to hide somewhere high, like the top of a wardrobe, while dogs appreciate a familiar crate covered with a cosy blanket – or they may come to you to seek reassurance. You can comfort frightened pets, doing so will not reinforce their fear. There are a variety of nonprescription herbal supplements that can be given to help calm anxious pets. Dogs may also be comforted by a Thundershirt, which is designed to trigger an endorphin release. Our trained staff can provide advice. Speak to your vet about whether anti-anxiety medication may be helpful if your pet is severely affected. These medications are prescription only, and your vet will need to examine your pet to decide the best option.

The game is a prequel to the first game, and you play the role of Arthur Morgan, a member of the infamous Van der Linde gang – which also features John Marston from RDR1. It’s basically Grand Theft Auto in the Wild West, but everything from the gameplay to the graphics has been improved beyond all recognition. If you have a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One then you quite simply need to get this game.
