WELCOME H OCTOBER 2017 #137

ello, you. Ready for autumn, and the darkening evenings? No, us neither, but the good news is that there’s so much to look forward to over the coming months. Take this issue for example. The Event Guide is bursting at the seams with everything from Bingo to Halloween parties (five of them, to be exact) and a considerable amount of stuff in-between too. I love the fact that this is such a varied and rich area, where the much-used cliché ‘there’s something here for everyone’ has never rung truer. I really hope you enjoy the magazine, find some interesting things to do, and see you again next month.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

AGE UK PART OF TESCO BAGS OF HELP INITIATIVE

Age UK Somerset is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores – being awarded to local community projects. Age UK Somerset is one of the groups on the shortlist. The project they are hoping to get votes and win money for is about tackling loneliness and the health and wellbeing of older people in Somerset and North Somerset.

Not all GFM presenters are committed amateurs. There are professional broadcasters too (not that GFM pays any of them) and Paul Cannon is certainly one. His career started as a Points West television reporter, then a BBC producer, editor of TV’s Countryfile and Radio 4’s Farming Today. Paul also recalls adventures in Australia working on bushcraft expert Ray Mears’World of Survival and joining the BBC’s General Election coverage team in Westminster. Now he presents the Jazz on GFM programme which broadcasts on Mondays from 2-3pm. “The programme is all about the local live jazz scene,”says Paul. “You won’t hear iconic names like Miles Davis or Ella Fitzgerald, whose music is available elsewhere. “You will hear recordings of excellent gigs around here, plus what’s on information and interviews. The local jazz scene is flourishing, and I am staggered by the quality of our musicians.” GFM broadcasts from purpose-built studios in the Red Brick Building on the Morlands Enterprise Park, Glastonbury at glastonburyfm. co.uk online and 107.1 FM on air. A

utumn has always been an important time for rural communities and An Autumn Celebration carries on the tradition of celebrating harvest time. On October 7-8, the Museum grounds will be filled with all-things autumnal, from apple pressing and giant pumpkins, to rural crafts and folklore. The Museum will hold its Living History Day on November 5, when the former dairy farm will be alive with the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of ancient skills and crafts. From September 23 to November 11, the wonderful 14th-century Abbey Barn will host an installation produced in partnership with Somerset Art Works and Craftspace. Gather-ing is a contemporary art exhibition exploring the use of ancient barns to gather and collect people, animals and crops. Kate Lynch’s stunning FARM exhibition also continues until December 3, featuring more than 40 paintings and drawings made on local farms. On October 25, painter James Lynch, is giving a talk and demonstration in using the ancient medium of egg tempera. James has spent many years mastering this technique and his much-admired landscape painting at the Museum is a stunning example of this work. Finally, Blighty Bushcraft returns on 22 October 22 for a ‘Slab and Stick’ Stool-Making Course. Normal admission applies to seasonal days and exhibitions with charges and booking required for workshops, courses and talks. For full details, please visit SRLM.org.uk.

This is your reminder that Wells is getting a brand-new afternoon acoustic session at The Venue in Wells. On the first Sunday of each month from 5pm you will be treated to some fantastic live music. Entry is free but if you wish to put some change in the pot to help support the bands playing then that would be greatly appreciated. David 9 Lunas is having an album launch party at The Riflemans in Glastonbury on October 22nd. I’ve had a sneak preview of the album and I’m very excited that it’s finally getting a release as it’s pure class.

Conception Collective are releasing some excellent music right now. I don’t usually listen to hip hop but there is something special about these guys. You can catch their music on YouTube. Give them some love. Georgie Robbins

streettalk

The Crispin Hall occupies a prominent position of importance on the High Street. It’s named after Saint Crispin, the patron saint of shoemakers, whose feast day is October 25. This imposing building was built by W.S. Clark, who mechanised the shoemaking process and went on to establish C. & J. Clark both as a pioneer of new technology and as a champion of footwear innovation. It was opened on October 12, 1885 by John Bright MP, one of the greatest orators of his generation. Bright was a Quaker free-trader, fighter for universal suffrage and radical thinker. Comprising of a large public hall, lecture and reading rooms, a library and a museum, it opened with the aim of improving the cultural facilities for Clarks’ employees and Streetonians. With passing years the building has certainly seen better days, but all this is about to change. Behind the barricades, significant building work is being carried out. The aim is to restore the whole building, not only with a sympathetic nod to its heritage but to make it fit for 21st century use. This sort of work is not speedy, nor is it cheap. But it is planned that by early next year The Crispin Hall will be fit for purpose, offering a wonderful resource once more for the people of Street and surrounding areas. Nina Swift

DEDICATED FOLLOWERS OF FASHION

One of autumn’s best events, the Runway Charity Fashion Show is back once again, and bigger than ever…

M

ake a note in your diaries for Saturday, October 14, as that’s when the Runway Fashion Show is being hosted at the Bocabar. The doors open at 6.30pm, the fun starts at 7 and then the music starts at 9.30 – supplied by the brilliant Harlem Rhythm Cats, with Runway co-owner Natalie on lead vocals. Tickets to the show cost just £10, and the price includes a glass of prosecco and, new for this year, a gift bag packed with goodies. Once again, the profits are going to support victims of MND (Motor Neurone Disease). The father of one of the models on the night suffers from this awful disease, so the money raised on the night is going towards building him a ramp at his house, which will greatly improve his quality of life. Also new for 2017 is men on the catwalk! The Wells Runway store has recently begun stocking men’s clothing from the stylish Joe Browns label, including jackets, jeans, shirts, T-shirts and waistcoats, so whether

you’re looking for clothes for yourself, or spotting stuff for Christmas presents, there’s now something at the show for everyone. There’s also a raffle on the night, with some brilliant prizes up for grabs.

Model citizens All of the models are friends and customers of the Runway shops, and range from 14-65. And, as you would expect, everything worn in the show is also available to buy in one of the shops, too. Runway have recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Wells shop, and both stores have a fantastic range of clothing, shoes, boots and accessories from some of the most best brands around. For more information on the show and to book your tickets, pop into either the Wells or Street store, ring them on 01749 676381 or 01458 442215, or email them on runwayinstreet@aol.co.uk.

GLASTONBURY CARNIVAL

Glastonbury’s annual Carnival returns to the town to help raise money for local worthy causes

O

n a crisp November night, what better entertainment than to be transported to a moving theatre production. The atmosphere is amazing, and we enjoy bopping along on the pavement to the fantastic floats that illuminate the Glastonbury skyline. This is a quote from a Carnival spectator! The Carnival takes place annually on the third Saturday in November, which this year is Saturday, November 18. Yet again it is shaping up be a fantastic night of entertainment – and we all have our fingers crossed that the weather is better than last year! The Carnival is organised by a small group of dedicated volunteers who have fond memories of watching the carnival as children and have now been inspired to keep the tradition going. The committee’s Chairperson, Hazel, has been involved in Carnival for over 35 years and says: “My passion for Carnival started in my youth with my parents, and we took part in parades in Trowbridge. I remember the float being built the night before the carnival and then being dressed up as all sorts of food items! And now I’m the Chairperson of the Glastonbury Chilkwell Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee. “Carnival is a display of wonder and excitement. The joy of seeing people’s faces in awe of the magnificent entries. I feel honoured to be a part of it.” Over 35,000 people come to watch the Carnival from all over the UK, but most people do not see the

effort which goes on throughout the year liaising with the local authorities, working alongside local businesses, groups, charities and individuals to ensure the greatest show in town can go ahead. They work all-year round raising money to run the carnival by marshalling at other events and taking advantage of any other fundraising opportunities that come their way. But they would welcome some more help, and this is where you could get involved! They have lots of things that you can help with, from collecting, marshalling, site maintenance, promotion, administration and much more! Hazel says: “Being part of Carnival is great fun, it is a fantastic way to give back to the local community, learn new skills, pass on old ones and meet like-minded people.” For more information, visit their Facebook page or website – www.glastonburycarnival.com, or contact committee members. They would love to hear from you!

Did you know that rabbits are now the fourth most popular pet in the UK? From those lovely big ears to their sweet little noses, we are officially a nation that love our rabbits. Rabbits are traditionally misunderstood as a pet; our knowledge influenced by the cartoon variety chomping on a carrot. In fact, 90% of their diet should be hay, with pelleted food and some leafy green vegetables making up the rest. The other thing people are often surprised to discover is how long-lived rabbits can be, which is over 10 years when they’re well looked after. Just like dogs and cats, they deserve regular health checks and vaccinations to keep them in top health. Traditional rabbit vaccinations prevent against Myxomatosis and RHD1, which until recently was thought to be the only strain in the UK. Unfortunately however, RHD2 has now also been recognised, too. It is responsible for a huge amount of rabbit deaths in the last few years. Rabbits being prey animals hide ill health well. Every day we need to check their eyes and nose are clear of discharge; that they are eating, passing faeces and that around their back end is clean. In rabbits, a reduction in appetite is an emergency that requires immediate veterinary attention. The most common cause of problems with rabbits is their teeth. Rabbits teeth grow by 2mm every week, hence why they need to eat plenty of hay to keep them worn down. MUSIC FROM THE HEART

T

he Hawthorns is playing host to a very special all-day music event on Saturday, November 4 to raise much-needed funds for the Freddy’s Fight for Life charity. You can see a full list of the bands below, and the day kicks off with the first artist at 2pm and finishes with the last one around 11pm. Entry is purely by donation, but the organisers (and us!) are obviously hoping that people will be generous. The day is the work of local music fan Rob Talbot, who’s the mastermind behind the whole organisation. He’s also set up a couple of brilliant prize draws, too. One is for a great range of CDs and merchandise (including a fully signed Levellers tour T-shirt) and tickets for that will be available on the day. The other one though can be entered now. 100 tickets are being sold at £5 each, and the prizes are two adults tickets to Farmer Phil’s Festival, a family ticket and camping pass to the Something to Smile About festival, and a private gig by musician Paul Henshaw.

WHO IS FREDDY?

Freddy is a lively four-year-old boy who, sadly, is suffering from a very rare and life-threatening condition. His parents set up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ Freddysfightforlife, and they need to raise £90,000 to get Freddy to the United States for an operation that will hopefully save his life. For more information on this unmissable day, and to find out how to book tickets for the draw, head to the event’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/events/1051822204954975, or just search for‘From the Heart’.

HAPPY SNAPPER

E

veryone has a dream, and for budding local photographer Stuart Williamson it’s coming true. Having spent many years taking photos for his own pleasure, he finally decided to take the plunge, expand his horizons, and has set himself up as a professional photographer. In the past few months he’s had work commissioned by the Mayor of Wells, held his first exhibition, and been asked to photograph many local events including live music. People are loving his work and the authenticity behind it, even sharing his work on their own social media pages. During the day Stuart works on an Alpaca farm, a job which he loves and would love to take more pictures of. “I love photography because it has a calming nature about it and all the places I visit are stunning in different ways,” says Stuart. “No two photographs are the same. You will take roughly about 40-50 shots just to get that perfect photograph.”

A Walk Around Ivythorn

I

am starting this walk at the car park by the Youth Hostel on Street Hill (from Street, turn right at Marshall’s Elm crossroads on the B3151). For those of you who don’t have cars, there is a footpath from Street which starts at the end of Brooks Road, at the junction of Middle Brooks and Higher Brooks; it joins this circular route where it is marked on the map. From the car park, walk along the right-hand side of the road on the same side as the Youth Hostel – you will see the pathway in the grass. Continue as you come into the wooded area; the path from Street joins the path from the right along here. Walk past the gate opposite the junction with Ivythorn Lane, and continue until you arrive at another gate. Cross the road carefully and turn right through the woods. Emerging onto the grassy area you will be able to see Glastonbury Tor to your right and a view across the Levels on the left. Now head towards the old windmill, which is now a private house. When you reach the drive, cross this to

the right of the windmill. You will see a stone trough and a metal bath tub, and the route goes between these – watch out for potholes in the ground. The path meanders to the left to go behind the windmill, and the stile will become visible in the hedge. After the stile, head downhill and you will come out in Ivythorn Lane. Turn left. Keep walking along the road, and it bends sharply to the left. On the right-hand side, a couple of hundred yards past the bend, you will find a gate to Ivythorn Hill National Trust Nature Reserve. Go through and proceed along the path. If you get here at dusk, the noise will be pretty deafening as this part of the wood is a rookery – if you are really lucky you may even see an owl. The path will lead you to some steps which go up to the left, but whichever path you take up the hill, you will arrive at the road again within sight of the Youth Hostel car park on the other side. Once again, cross carefully. Article and photographs by John Fleming
