hat time has come around again, and after months of hard work and dedication by all of the Carnival Clubs in the area, they’re finally ready to unveil this year’s entries. From what we’re seen so far this year, some of the entries are looking incredible and not to be missed. Some of the bigger Carnivals will have around 100 entries, and it takes about four hours to get from start to finish! The Carnival route finishes off in Glastonbury on November 18, which, incredibly, has been hosting a Carnival for over 160 years! Remember that whatever Carnival you attend, make sure that you bring lots of spare change with you. Carnivals are some of the best free entertainment around, but they do rely on your support to be able to continue year after year. You would think that with it being Christmas soon things would slow down but no, there is plenty to keep you busy over the next few months. November sees the Glastonbury Frost Fayre return on the 25th, and on the same day you’ll find Gas Brookfield headlining an Orange Dog event at The Hawthorns. Tickets can be purchased online for that one. Restless Youth have a new EP out which is available to download now. Self-proclaimed ‘protest music’ is the theme, and also so important with the current climate. Pop over to Facebook to find links to download The Greater Plan. Tickets are now on sale for Glastonbury Calling. Some acts have already been announced, such as Nicholson Heal and Kate Gough, and Ian Liversidge will be revealing more over the coming weeks. Oh, and don’t forget. On the first Sunday of each month The Venue in Wells hosts live music from 6pm. Hope to see you there! Georgie Robbins

CINEMA TO CELEBRATE THEIR SILVER ANNIVERSARY So the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in. The shops in Street’s High Street are preparing to look even more festive. The pumpkins, witches outfits, bats and cobwebs are being put away for another year, and it’s time to think about Christmas! Street Parish Councillors have met and chosen illuminations to hire to decorate the street lights, and orders are being taken for Christmas trees to be displayed above the shops. The theme for the display in front of Greenbank Swimming Pool is a closely guarded secret. Last year’s display had an arctic theme – there were polar bears, icebergs, penguins (yes I know they are from the Antarctic!), reindeer and presents. And this year it will be… sorry can’t tell you! The council are hoping that this year, as in previous years, shopkeepers will be hiding Theo, the Christmas ichthyosaur as part of the Shop Window Competition to win a Christmas hamper. A change this year means that there will be two hampers given away, one for all correct answers and one for the winner of the draw for entries that are not fully completed. The councillors recognise that some people do not have time to find all the answers and hope those will enter the draw too. Happy searching! Nina Swift

At the end of November, the Wells Film Centre will be celebrating its 25th anniversary with three events over the weekend of November 25-27. Firstly, there are two screenings of the Frozen spin-off, Olaf’s Frozen Christmas on the Saturday and Sunday. Then on Sunday night there’s a special screening of The Last of the Mohicans, which was the cinema’s first film back in 1992. Finally, on Monday, November 27 (which is officially the cinema’s birthday) they’ve got a pre-release charity screening of Wonder. Tickets to all these performances are just £3 each – which was the ticket price when the cinema first opened. For more information, head to www.wellsfilmcentre.co.uk.
SLOTS OF FUN There’s a brand-new Slot Car club launched at the Shepton Mallet Leisure Centre on Wednesday nights. The club runs from 7.30pm-10pm, and newcomers are always welcome – the first night is free, with cars and controllers provided. Sounds like a slot of fun to us! Sigh. nce upon a time, Abbey Mews had a very good ironmongers where one could obtain almost all one required. Goods were delivered by horse and cart by a one-armed person called Twister Chivers. It was rather like Fawlty Towers: utter confusion everywhere. Today the music shop Sonus Magus echoes that same crazy vibe, carrying stock from over a dozen suppliers. The shop sells a range of instruments and accessories, as well as effects units (created by owner Mark) with an ethereal quality that’s that sound unlike anything we’ve heard before. Just ask Mark for a demo and he’ll be happy to oblige.
Further on in and you come to the Comic Store, which has expanded this year, and now has one of the best ranges of comics, graphic novels and sci-fi toys for miles. Opposite that is Hemingways, which is a sparkling delight of Vintage/designer clothes, accessories and jewellery, and is an excellent shop to check out for gifts. Towards the end of the Mews is the Abbey Muse gallery and shop. It’s run as an artists collective, so you can pop along and speak to the actual artists who create the unique artwork, crafts and cards, as they take turns minding the shop.

WHAT A CRACKER!

treet Parish Council is proud to be opening its third Christmas Cracker Event in Street High Street on Saturday, December 2. Planning for Street’s Christmas Cracker started in January with a debrief from all those involved last year, including local shopkeepers. The council wanted to know what had gone well and what could be changed to improve the event. All the feedback has been considered and the main change is that this year it will run from 11-4pm on a Saturday, with both Farm Road and High Street closed to traffic.

There will be a wide variety of stalls lining the streets, with covered shopping areas in The United Reform Church, The British Legion Hall and The Crispin Centre. Father Christmas is visiting, and Street Parish Council is offering him a chance to set up his grotto in The Parish Rooms. There will be singing around the Christmas Wishing Tree as well as more places in the streets, and other musical activities are planned, too. At the far end of the high street there will be children’s rides and the afternoon’s activities will be announced by Street’s first ‘Town’ crier.
Sharp-eyed children can enter the shop window competition, looking for Theo the Christmas ichthyosaur, a competition which starts on the second but runs until 18th December. Amba’s much-loved annual charity fashion show is returning for 2017 with a brand-new venue and their stunning new winter collection…
W
hether you’re a follower of fashion or just looking for a great night out, the annual Amba fashion show is simply not to be missed. The event will be featuring some of the most stunning labels around – and all available from the Amba shop in Wells, including their latest brands Religion and Maruti. Once again, Amba are teaming up with Sense, who provide the hair and make up on the night, but this year the show is being hosted at the hottest new eatery in town, the Markethouse in the Market Street Courtyard. Amba, which has been trading in Wells since 2003, has raised thousands for charity over the years it’s been running the show. This year, as always, the funds raised will be donated to St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, which does such great work across the county providing palliative care to patients and families threatened with a life-limiting illness. And Santander will once again be match-funding the amount raised. Tickets are available now from the Amba shop (01749 677676), and also the Sense salon in Coxley (01749 670121), and they cost just £15 each – the price includes a welcome glass of Prosecco and a small sharing platter. There’s also a raffle on the night as well as a silent auction, and both of these have an incredible selection of prizes to be won. So a brilliant night out and it’s all for a fantastic cause. ADAM’S POINT-TO-POINT PROJECT
Artist Adam Berry decided to tour around England for his latest exhibition. 15,000 miles later, it can now be seen at the Atkinson Gallery in Millfield… What can you tell us about the exhibition, and what was the idea behind it? It was two years in the making, and the working title for it was Compass Point Project. I’m based in Doncaster, so from there I could go North, South, East or West, and anywhere in-between that looked interesting. My rule to myself was that I had to physically be in the place I wanted to paint, otherwise it wasn’t allowed. Did you travel on your own? I would say for the majority of the time I was travelling on my own, yes. There was one leg of the journey when I headed down to Cornwall with another painter, but the rest of it was very much a solo project. And you enjoyed that time on your own? I did, because it gave me the freedom to think and be free. For example, I could talk to a local fisherman
or tin miner and get their background story, which could be up to 10 pages of notes. That then helps me capture the perfect mood and feel when it comes to painting the scenes. The subject very much dictates the medium. What would you hope people bring away from your exhibition? Thinking of the younger art students, I hope they bring away a confidence that anyone can achieve anything. If someone like me from Doncaster, who works for Amazon, can get an exhibition in an amazing place like this then so can they. How did you get known to the people at the Atkinson Gallery? Paul Maxfield, the Director of the Atkinson gallery, just happened to be up in the area and thought he’d pop by and check out our studio in Doncaster. I ended up giving Paul the tour of the building, and luckily for me, my studio was the first one he came to. He really liked my work, and stayed talking to me for about three hours. He then came back for another viewing the following day, and offered me a show at the gallery! I can’t stress how important Paul has been in helping me develop my work and getting it shown to a wider audience. Last year you had a teaching residency at Millfield School for a while. Did you learn much from the students? Definitely. My favourite group was the 4-6 year olds – which they call Pre-Prep – because they were as good as gold, asked some very sensible questions, and ended up doing their own exhibition, too.

a nightmare before christmas! Zombies will be taking over Glastonbury High Street on Saturday, December 9 to celebrate Christmas in their own inimitable style!
T
he annual Glastonbury Zombie Walk is open to all fans of the undead, young and old, who are encouraged to parade their inner zombie along the High Street. There will be old clothes and face painting available from 3pm at Avalon Constitutional Club for zombifying, and the High Street will be invaded at 5pm. Although it’s free to take part, the Zombie Walk raises valuable funds for Glastonbury charity, Children’s World – which supports local youth organisations with issues such as bullying, special needs and integration – and there will be plenty of chances for people to donate. Children’s World director Paddy Hill said, “The Zombie Walk has become very popular over the years, with people really going to town with their costumes. We can’t wait to see this year’s parade of the Undead!”
