WAC ON THE MOVE FOR 2019 EXHIBITION

W

ells Art Contemporary (WAC) is delighted to announce that this year’s exhibition of shortlisted works will be held at Wells Cathedral for the first time. The WAC exhibition will be displayed within the Cathedral’s magnificent cloisers and in the Camery Gardens. There is also the possibility of up to eight site-specific installations within the Cathedral itself. It will take place during the summer period when Wells is at its busiest – artists’ work could be viewed by over 20,000 expected visitors to the Cathedral. WAC Chairman, Paddy O’Hagan, says: “This year provides a remarkable opportunity for artists to reflect on the Cathedral and its history and architecture in their work. And obviously local artists have the advantage of being able to easily visit the Cathedral for inspiration.”

The competition is open to any artist over the age of 18 and up to four works of art may be submitted of any size and in any medium. Applications must be made online via wac. artopps.co.uk and the deadline is Wednesday, May 15 at 5pm. Rules & Guidelines along with a detailed selection of FAQs can be found at the web link above. For further information though, visit www. wellsartcontemporary.co.uk.

Gathering

Save the date: July the 20th is when The Godney Gathering will once again take over Garslade Farm for one of the best one-day festivals around. Here’s a guide to the festival itself, and the people behind it…

AMBER CHAPMAN

THE GFM STAGE

Amber is a 16-year-old singer/songwriter and Drum and Bass MC from Glastonbury. Last year she had a work experience placement through her school, but this year she’s back as a performer! “I gave Mike and Sue, two of the people who run The Godney Gathering, a message to see if I could join their crew on the set up of the festival,” says Amber. “This turned out to be such an amazing opportunity and I am proud to say I am now part of the Godney family!” Amber has been playing live for about five years now, in various bands and groups, and also performs as a Drum & Bass MC in clubs across Bristol and Somerset. This will be her first festival performance though – but definitely not her last. “In the future I would love to continue to study music and to keep gigging and performing, says Amber. “I am looking forward to looking at different styles of music to improve my style and to create the best music that I have the potential to do. Also, I am very interested in events management and lighting/sound production, which could be a beneficial addition to performing.”

Wow! This is year seven for the GFM stage at The Godney Gathering. Mike and Sue gave us the opportunity to get involved and promote our community radio station because of our support for the local music scene. We started off the first year in a small acoustic tent with solo/duos and then the following three years had a nice medium-sized tent. Now though we have a magnificent outside stage which has a great view, a big area in front of it for dancing, and is fantastic for the up-andcoming local bands to play on. We have always supported the local music scene and Godney is a great opportunity for acts to get seen by a wider audience. The festival also gives local acts a great opportunity to progress onto the main stage as well. After they have impressed, they may get to play on the main stage or headline the second stage at future Gatherings. We’ve got another exciting line-up planned for you this year, so pick up the programme on the day and pop along to say hello!

SOMERSET DAY IN STREET

F

or the third year running, Street Parish Council are celebrating Somerset Day in Street on May 11. There will be performances in The Library Gardens from 11am – we’ve got a breakdown of events on the right side of this page. Street is also fortunate that King Alfred and his Queen will be walking around distributing cakes. Why King Alfred? The date chosen for Somerset Day by a committee of Somerset residents is the date that King Alfred led the people of Somerset to a victory against the Danish invaders. But Somerset Day is all about celebrating the best of Somerset and focusing on how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful county. As a completely new venture this year there will also be an Art Trail around Street. It starts on May 4 and runs until May 18. The 2019 Art Trail theme is ‘Art & Sole’, and features new and contemporary works celebrating the industrial and agricultural heritage of Street, as well as its natural history and the surrounding countryside. The Art Trail has been made possible by the generosity and collaboration of many partners and sponsors, which include Street Parish Council, the Alfred Gillett Trust, Clarks Village, Strode Theatre, and Street Harvest Church. The Trail itself will take the form of a series of unique silhouettes featuring iconic shoes and boots from the Alfred Gillett Trust’s Digitisation Project filled with original works from members of the CREATE:SPACE II community of artists. At various locations along the Art Trail there will also be gallery and sculptural installations, as well as demos of traditional crafts and artists in residence. For more details of Art & Sole, phone 01458 444060, email enquiries@agtrust.org.uk, pop into The Grange building in Street for a Trail Map, or check out the new Strode Theatre brochure. Cllr. Saturday, May 25 sees the return of the Glastonbury Fringe Launch Party with four bands, headlined by one of the UK’s best live acts Tankus the Henge (for more information on this, head back to page 22). THE

T

he outdoor theatre season starts in May at Glastonbury Abbey with a production by Strode College on May 14. The show is written specifically for the Abbey and will be in promenade, so you’ll wander the ruins with the show and meet several different characters as they guide you through a story based on Glastonbury Abbey and its visitors. As an added bonus, the outdoor theatre season launch event has free entry for all Abbey members – just bring along your membership card to the entrance at 6.30pm. The show starts at 7pm, and non-member tickets are £10. In 2018 the Abbey won best new event at the national Outdoor Events Association awards for its Summer Open Evening. The Summer Open Evening is on May 24 this year, and kicks off an amazing weekend of entertainment across the second bank Holiday weekend. The Summer Open Evening is Free entry from 6pm and features a market,

Wells is hosting its first beer and cider festival this month, and it’s for charity, too…

T

he first Wells Beer and Cider Festival will be held this month on the grounds of the Wells Rugby Club. Based over two days, the festival will be held over three sessions on the evening of Friday, May 17 (7pm through to 11pm) and the afternoon (11am-5pm) and evening (7pm-11pm) of Saturday, May 18. The Festival will be a haven for lovers of fine beers and ciders, with a fantastic selection of some of the best brewers around – and they’re all from Somerset. The festival is being sponsored by Mallet Cider, and they are setting up a beer garden on the grounds. There will be plenty to eat too, with everything from waffles to pork baps, pizza and noodles! The day session on the Saturday will be family friendly, with children’s events taking

May 2019

place. There will be plenty of entertainment for grown-ups too, with a great range of live music. Those looking for something a bit different to drink can check out the gin and Prosecco bar, which will also be selling a selection of soft drinks. The festival is a ticketed event, with 450 tickets available for each session. Tickets cost £10, and we suggest that you get your tickets in advance to save disappointment on the day. Best of all, the whole event is a fundraiser for Heads Up, the amazing Wells charity that does so much incredible work to help those with mental health issues. You can find out more information about the festival, as well as buy your tickets, on the festival website here: www. wellsbeerandcider festival.com.

The Web Therapist

Need a website designing? Or looking to get the most from the one you already have? It’s time for a Web Therapy session…

M

y name is Matt, and I’m a Web Designer based in Glastonbury. I make websites work for small businesses and selfemployed people. I understand the demands of running your own business, while also trying to keep on top of your website and digital marketing. I offer a helping hand in getting to grips with the web, providing insights and practical solutions that I’ve learned in 12 years as a professional. I create good-looking, optimised websites and ecommerce solutions that are easy to update and, more importantly, very visible to Google. I also provide tutorials for those who are attempting to build and manage their own websites, shortening the learning curve in a matter of hours. I like to provide value for my clients right from the off, so here are a few quick tips that might help you enhance your small business website… Apply descriptive names and alt tags for your images – this will help them to be found by Google and drive more traffic to your site. Ensure that your articles are structured with clear

titles that include keywords related to the content on your page. Also try to work in your keywords to the body text in a readable way, don’t shoehorn or cram too many in, but find a balance. Your article should be readable first and foremost, including keywords in a natural way. Make sure your website is responsive, adapts to fit mobile and tablets. I still come across many sites that don’t present a mobile version, a high proportion of visits to your website will come via mobile. Look at your Google analytics account to see the percentages of mobile, tablet and desktop visits.

oping to steal some of Mario Kart’s thunder comes Sonic in his latest driving game, Team Sonic Racing. You can play solo, team up with your friends, or face-off against each other in high-stake races between rival teams. Like Mario Kart, you can race with three mates in split-screen mode, and also online too, with 12 players in a race and enough modes and game variations to keep you playing for months. Our favourite is probably the Adventure Mode, but you can take part in Time-Trials, Exhibitions and a Grand Prix.
