WELCOME A JUNE 2018 #145

s festival season swings into life, we’ve got a few crackers coming up… there’s Collett Park and the Glastonbury Fringe this month, swiftly followed by The Godney Gathering in July and Sat in a Field in August. There’s plenty more packed into the magazine, with a bumper news section and a selection of other tasty snippets dotted throughout for you. In other Basis news, we’re moving offices to Shepton Mallet in a matter of days from the time of writing this – well, we’re moving house to be exact, but as we all work from home, they’re kind of the same thing. It’s sure to be chaos for a couple of weeks, but we can’t wait to throw ourselves into Shepton life, as there’s so much exciting stuff happening in the town. So hope you’re having a lovely summer and see you again in a month’s time.

This month Sharon Lazibyrd is releasing her long-awaited new album. I’ve mentioned before that I’ve heard early previews and I’m happy to say it is sounding fantastic. You can head over to her Facebook page for more details on how to order that. It’s been getting a lot of radio play lately, and I’m anticipating great things to come from its release. The Glastonbury Grow Room at the King Arthur is starting to really take shape. It’s been going now for a few months and hosted some brilliant, weird and wonderful artists. For those who aren’t aware of what it is all about, it’s essentially musicians playing in front of an audience as well as it being fed live on Facebook around the world. Every Thursday from 9pm, so check it out. Slightly away from Music I know, but a friend of mine is putting on a charity Bingo night at the Royal Legion club in Street on June 29. Make sure you go! Shops across the country are closing frequently and this consequence of high business rates (Street Parish Council has no control over these rates) and Internet shopping affects Street, too. Street Parish Council are looking at a range of ways to support our traders. Somerset Day was planned to help raise footfall, and to encourage some of the 4.2 million Clarks Village shoppers into Street High Street. When Tesco left The Crispin Centre it knocked a hole in our amenities, and despite approaching over 20 major food retailers, we have had no takers for the site. SPC are taking one more step to reinvigorate our village centre and that is to allow Mendip Markets to run a Thursday market in our centre for a trial period. SPC consulted with High Street retailers, and the majority of them were in favour of the market. The Council are fully in favour of a high street market of good quality with an emphasis on foods. Mendip Markets also want to trial in Farm Road. It will be interesting to see how this pans out. So people of Street, in the very near future there will be an open air market hopefully offering much-needed goods and also being a draw for our many visitors with a positive knock on for our retailers. LEVELLERS SINGER HEADING TO SOMERSET In 1994, Glastonbury Festival’s Friday night headliners, The Levellers, pulled what is reported to be the biggest crowd that the festival had ever seen, with some estimates stating up to 300,000 people saw the performance. On October 20, band frontman Mark Chadwick is returning to Glastonbury to play a more intimate show to 300 people at The Bocabar. One of the UK’s most successful songwriters, Mark, has co-written 20 chart singles and six Top 40 albums (including a Number 1) as part of the Levellers, the band he has fronted for over 25 years. Still going strong, the Levellers are festival favourites, and in 2003 they created their own annual Beautiful Days Festival, which takes place in August at Escot Park in Devon. During this time Mark has released two solo albums, All the Pieces and Moment, and his upfront and personal solo performance will see him play a mixture

of material from these albums, as well as some classic Levellers tracks, too. Mark will be supported by festival favourites Jake Martin, Paul Henshaw, and Nick Parker, making this a night not to be missed. Tickets are available online now from Eventbrite for just £12.50 (inc fees), and are selling quickly for what is sure to be one of the most talked-about gigs the town has seen for a long time. STRODELIVE

For the past four years, StrodeLive has helped to crew the merchandise tent at The Godney Gathering. As a performer at the festival himself, Daniel Shaw – the course manager of the Level 3 performance course at Strode College – recognised the opportunity to help the acts sell their merchandise and so support their music making. The StrodeLive students have a great time learning about the organisation of the festival, and the Gathering’s Mike and Sue Daniells regularly visit the college to help the students with their event management studies. The students help acts by organising their gear, selling merchandise and arranging signings for the band members. There was a huge queue and lots of fun signing body parts after UK:ID performed two years ago!

PICK OF THE P PS

There’s no shortage of incredible artists playing at this year’s Godney Gathering, but here’s our pick of the ones to watch out for…

THE CORRESPONDENTS

Regardless of the style of music you like and what you previously thought might be one of your highlights of the day, we strongly urge you to check out The Correspondents when they leap onto the Main Stage. While the singer, Mr Bruce, hurls himself around the stage, the producer, Chucks, weaves in a stunning backing track featuring the Swing Era, Drum & Bass, Jungle and 60s Soul. It sounds crazy and it probably is, but somehow it works brilliantly.

THE DEVIL’S PREFECTS

eeder’s Grant Nicholas is no stranger to cider. He claims to have drunken more than his fair share growing up in Chepstow and even sang about drinking cider from a lemon in 2001’s Buck Rogers, which we think is the perfect induction to the headliner slot at this year’s Godney Gathering. With 25 years’ service under their belt and around 300 songs, Feeder are a band that are hard to pigeonhole but instantly recognisable with a string of anthemic hits like the aforementioned Buck Rogers, High and Just the Way I’m Feeling. On record they’re a band that have always been hard to ignore, and live they’re a band that demand your attention from the first chord to the last. “People don’t realise we are quite a heavy band,” says Grant. “Not in a kind of metal way, but we do have a fat guitar sound. We try and mix that up with the lighter Indie stuff and some acoustic stuff, too.” They’ve supported some of the world’s biggest artists and have been a favourite on the festival circuit for some years now. “We’re probably doing more gigs now than we ever have,” says Grant. “We’ve always been one of those bands that seem to have a real cross section of ages with our fans that go from kids that have discovered us through older brothers and sisters and their parents.” This promises to be one of those ‘were you at Godney when Feeder played?’ stand-out moments, and with just a few tickets left, we strongly recommend that you book yours ASAP!

DEADLINE LOOMS FOR ART COMPETITION A national press launch, an exhibition at London’s prestige JGM Gallery and a cheque for £1000 are among the first of many lucrative prizes in the 2018 Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) competition, which runs during October in the Bishop’s Palace. WAC, now in its sixth year, has always been about promoting local artists. But it has grown from a purely local focus to realise the ambition of co-founder Kate Noble for these same artists to leave their comfort zone and measure their talent and vision in the heat of international competition. “Two previous winners, Frances Borden and Dominic Bradnum, have already shown what the competition can do to showcase ability and promote a career,” says Paddy O’Hagan, Chair of WAC. “We want that possibility for all artists in our catchment, aspiring or established. We’re building this to be the most influential and exciting contemporary art competition in the West Country.” For more information about WAC, head to their website at www. wellsartcontemporary.co.uk. To find out more about submitting artwork, go to wac.artopps.co.uk. The deadline for artwork submissions is Monday, July 2.

Now called Spaced Out Records, you’ll get the same great quality of service and range of music, but just more of it! Spaced Out Records opens its doors on June 9, and we’ll be taking a closer look at the store (as well as their new record label) in an upcoming issue.

FROM: Ubisoft FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One

T

he original version of The Crew was a (slightly) above average driving game, tempting people in with promises of multiplayer open-world gameplay, but the good news is that the sequel has improved on everything that was a little meh with the first game. For starters, the map has been redone from the ground up, you can now take control of motorcycles, boats and planes, and there’s a new storyline centring on a relatively unknown racer who’s trying to rise up through the ranks. Overall, The Crew 2 is a cracking driving game that we definitely suggest you check out.

SPOTLIGHT

DOUBLE-GATE FARM

An idyllic spot, a great Tea Rooms and they also raise loads for local charities… it’s time to find out more about Double-Gate Farm in Godney

T

ucked away in the village of Godney, right next door to The Sheppey Inn, is Double-Gate Farm, a very successful B&B and Tea Room. It’s a stunning location, and also a well-known destination locally for a peaceful meal or stay. What’s less well-known though, is that the Tea Rooms also has an annual in-house charity that it fundraises for throughout the year. Charities that have previously benefited include Musgrove Park Hospital and the Air Ambulance. This year it’s the RNLI that will receive the donation. The Farm hosts various fundraising events throughout the year, and there’s a permanent area in the tea rooms dedicated to homemade produce (jams, greetings cards, etc.) that are sold to help, too. On July 15 the Tea Room is hosting their main fundraising event of the year: The Great Double-Gate BBQ. There’s live music, stalls, garden games and, of course, plenty of delicious food. It’s a ticket-only event, and you can buy them through the Tea Rooms only – adult tickets cost £8 and children’s ones cost £5. Double-Gate Farm have plenty of other events going on throughout the year, including National Cream Tea Day (yes, there really is one) on June 29, events for both Christmas and Halloween, and the Afternoon Tea Week, which kicks off on August 15. To find out information on all the planned events at Double-Gate Farm, heard to either their official site at www.doublegatefarm.co.uk or their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/doublegatefarmgodney.

EARLY-BIRD PARKING AVAILABLE

T

he Mid-Somerset Show is introducing early bird car parking tickets for this year’s show. Visitors to the show on Sunday, August 19 now have the opportunity to purchase car parking tickets in advance for £11, saving themselves money on the gate. The Mid-Somerset Show is one of the largest free entry shows in England, which only charges for car parking. The income from the car park helps fund the show from the livestock competitions to the South West Cheese Awards, ensuring it’s a value-for-money day out for the whole family. This year is the 166th anniversary of the MidSomerset Agricultural Society, and its show has always been traditionally held on the third Sunday in August. The Show attracts over 2,500 exhibitors and 17,000 visitors from the surrounding area.

Go to www.bradsons.co.uk and look for the Mid-Somerset Show under Tickets to purchase your tickets, or call 01749 813899 for more information. Please note car parking costs also apply to blue badge holders. Car parking tickets on the day will be £13 per car, so you can save £2 by booking early.

Dealing With Ticks This Summer

Y

Removing ticks – dos and don’ts!

If you find a tick on your pet, you can remove it by grasping its head with tweezers and pulling it off. A handy tool called a tick twister can make this easier. Alternatively, you can arrange a tick removal appointment with one of our nurses on 01458 832972. You should never try to remove a tick using the following methods: Pulling with your fingers – this will often leave the mouthparts behind. Burning the tick with a hot match head – you are more likely to injure yourself or the pet! Applying Vaseline, alcohol or any other liquids – this can increase the risk of disease transmission, and also rarely works! Prevention is better than cure! So before any nasty ticks get a hold of your pet, come in to see us to discuss the products we can provide to prevent bites and kill ticks.

THE

ou might not know it from the ever-changing weather, but summer is just around the corner. For cats and dogs, that means increased risk of flea and tick infestations. Ticks are often found in long grass, particularly in areas where deer graze. Ticks are a health risk to our pets as they can carry disease. Luckily, tick-borne disease remains rare in the UK, but with increased movement of pet animals overseas, it may become more common. The risk of disease transmission is low if a tick is removed from a pet within 24-48 hours of attaching.
