BASIS

The Basis is a free magazine distributed to homes and businesses in Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet. Each issue is packed with local information guaranteed to give you plenty to do with your free time. The Basis is very much a community magazine, which means that if you have a story you’d like included in a future issue or would like to write a piece for the magazine, then we’d love to hear from you. Drop the editor a line on dean@super8media.co.uk and we’ll be in touch.

Advertising 6,500 copies of The Basis are distributed around Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet. There really is no better way to reach the local people that could be using your business. Contact Dean on dean@ super8media.co.uk to discuss what we can do to help promote your business in The Basis.

Please note that we do not approve or endorse any of the services or products provided by advertisers in this magazine (however lovely they are) and do not accept responsibility for any of the content they supply.

T

here’s a definite Festival vibe in the air. As I write this people are gathering from all around the world to set up Glastonbury – which is just a few miles down the road from The Basis’ office, and speaking of gathering, it’s the Godney Gathering in a matter of weeks, too! Hope to see some of you there. This issue packs a lot into its 40 pages, including features on the Summer Show at the Atkinson Gallery in Street, Wells Art Contemporary, the Affinity Trust, Off the Streets in August, Burns the Breads’ Baking Courses, House of El, the Mid-Somerset Show and Pauline Rook, a local photographer who displays her photos at the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen in Wells. As always, we really hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget that if you want even more events to choose from across the whole county, check out www.thebasisonline.com.

GALLERY OPENS SUMMER SHOW

The Summer Show at the Atkinson Gallery is up and running…

T

he Atkinson Gallery in Millfield School has an annual programme with four exhibitions each year – two of which showcase the work of artists with a national or international profile either through individual or group exhibitions. Past exhibitors for these exhibitions include Sir Anthony Caro, Stewart Geddes PRWA, Dame Elisabeth Frink, Susie MacMurray and Glynn Williams. The other two exhibitions on the gallery calendar aim to support local and student work, offering an opportunity for students to raise the profile of their art through the MA & Other Postgraduates exhibition held at the end of February each year and the Summer Show which runs from the end of June. The Summer Show aims to support regional artists and offers an opportunity for them to share and sell their work. It provides a valuable resource for pupils at the school in terms of beginning their preparation for next year’s studies and offers an overview of local contemporary art. Viewing the artwork is completely free and easy to attend – just pop into the reception at the main entrance to the school. It’s also highly recommended, as there are some stunning pieces of art on display.

NEW ROOF FOR BOCABAR TERRACE

hanks to the Red Brick Building in Glastonbury securing funding, the gorgeous garden terrace alongside Bocabar has finally got itself a roof for all weathers. Resident DJ Adam Poole – co-owner of Hub Timber Frame – offered his design and skilled team to make the glulam wooden frame and clear polycarbonate sheet roof to budget. With the help of Bon Everson, who runs the community garden at the Red Brick Building, the planters have been refreshed with herbs and flowers to enhance the surrounding natural beauty of the outdoor space. Looking out onto the Levels, it’s perfect for al fresco breakfasts, lunching and dining this summer, and enjoying sunsets sipping cocktails. THE

As the weather warms up, it’s important to think about keeping your pets safe from the heat, and other issues that only arise in the summer months. Heatstroke is the most important thing to avoid. Leaving a pet in a hot car, or over-exercising them in warm weather, can cause a rapid rise in body temperature that can lead to seizures, organ failure and death. Brachycephalic breeds such as French bulldogs and pugs are particularly vulnerable. Walk your pet when the weather is cool, and remember never to leave a dog in the car during summer. Unlike us, pets don’t really show visible sunburn, but sun damage can still lead to skin cancer. Make sure nonpigmented, lightly haired skin, such as the tips of ears, noses, or a dog’s belly are protected with a pet sunscreen. Ticks are a blood-sucking parasite found in long grass in warm summer and autumn weather. An individual tick isn’t dangerous, but they can carry disease. Most tick-borne diseases are absent from the UK, but tick protection is important if you travel with your pet. Our team can advise you on an effective product for your pet. Long summer grass can be full of grass seeds, which can get into pets’ ears, or burrow through the skin, causing painful abscesses. Paws are the worst affected areas, especially in dogs with long coats. Checking your dog’s coat after a walk and removing any grass seeds before they reach the skin can save a trip to the vets!

STREET SMART

If you’re stressing about finding things for the kids to do over the holidays that doesn’t cost a fortune, Children’s World and Off the Streets are here to help…

C

hildren’s World are back again this summer with Off the Streets, a week of workshops and activities for young people and families in Glastonbury and nearby. Running from August 12-16, workshops include ever-popular ones like Cookery, Parkour and Paddington Farm days, plus new workshops including a Picnic and a Self Defence workshop, both provided by our local Police! Also new this year are workshops geared for ages 12 and over, including Graffiti Art and Light Painting Photography workshops for the artistically minded. Children’s World Director, Paddy Hill said: “This will be our sixth year of Off the Streets and it’s going to be another great week! Thanks to invaluable support from the Aviva Community Fund, we are offering more activities than ever before. No matter what your age there will be a workshop for you! We definitely advise people to book early. “It’s been a tough time financially for the charity with the absence of Glastonbury Festival last year, but thanks to incredible support from our friends and the community, including students from Strode College and our Youth Committee, we’ve made it through!” Courses do book up very quickly, so we recommend you book as soon as possible. To book a course, fill out the Booking Form opposite and send it with a cheque or cash to the Children’s World office at 28 Northload Street, Glastonbury BA6 9JJ. The offices are open daily from 9am-3pm, so you can drop the form off in person if that’s more convenient for you – the staff at Children’s World are also more than happy to help you fill out the form in person if you need any help.

THE MINISTRY OF BREADUCATION

Bob Burns from Burns the Bread also runs two regular baking classes in Glastonbury. We thought we’d rise to the challenge to find out more…

BREAD & BUN DAY For both beginner and intermediate bakers

On our Bread & Bun day, Bob the Baker will teach you how to make a superb range of fermented goods, even if you have never baked before! The day will start at 9.00am with a ‘Coffee & Danish’ and an introduction to your fellow bakers. During the morning you will produce white farmhouse loaves, mini loaves, Chelsea buns, and teacakes. And then, just prior to lunch, you will make a bread dough of your choice. Whether it be Stilton & Walnut, Cheddar Cheese, Granary, Spelt, Super Seeded, or your own combination of flavours and flours, you will not be disappointed. While you enjoy your lunch, your dough will gently ferment away, and be ready for you to shape, plait, prove and bake during the afternoon session.

BREAD & PASTRY DAY

For both beginner and intermediate bakers On our Bread & Pastry day, Bob the Baker will teach you how to make a superb loaf of bread, and a range of sweet, savoury and puff pastries. Even if you have never had previous successes with your pastry making, Bob will ‘endeavour’ to point you in the right direction! From the three pastries you will produce delicious all-butter Eccles Cakes, Somerset Pasties, and Fruit Pies.

There will be a maximum of six participants on this course, and the day will conclude at around 4pm. The price of a one-day course is £135, to include all ingredients and materials – and lunch with wine! And plenty of coffee! A NEW EVENT FOR 2019 SHOW!

W

e’re another month closer to the 2019 Mid-Somerset Show on Sunday, August 18, and plans are now being finalised to make this one of the best ones ever. This month we thought we’d take a closer look at one of the new events being introduced this year: Flyball. This is a hugely entertaining dog sport involving hurdles and tennis balls. It’s a lot of fun, and to find out more, head to www.flyball.org.uk. Staying on an animal theme, we’re also happy to report that the Paws for Thought dog display team will be back performing agility games and races in the Main Ring, too. It’s not too late to become a member of the Mid-Somerset Show Society as well. Membership

offers many perks including entry into the member’s tent on show day with lunch and a great view of the main ring, as well as invites to all the member’s exclusive social events throughout the year, including the very popular pre-show party. To get involved in this year’s show or to find out more please contact Christine Barham on 01749 938044 or go to www.midsomersetshow.org.uk. advocate of infrared photography, ever since she began using a camera with the infrared filter removed. Basically, there are extremities of light that cannot be seen with the naked eye, although they can be normally picked up by a camera’s infrared filter. If you remove that filter you can create some incredibly striking effects. To see exactly how dramatic a photo taken on an infrared camera can be have a look at the landscape photograph on this page. We also recommend that you head to Pauline’s website (www.rookphoto.co.uk) and check out some of the galleries on her Blog page – in particular, the giraffe photographs taken in Kenya, which are some of our favourites. Pauline’s work is on sale at the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen in Broad Street in Wells (www. somersetguild.co.uk), where she has an excellent range of her rural-themed work. More of her work can be viewed and purchase on her website, where you can also find out more about Pauline’s portrait business.

She was a farmer’s wife, and has lived in the country for around 40 years now – and has been taking photographs since she was 10 years old. An Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS), Pauline has also been shortlisted for Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Traditionally, Pauline has worked with standard camera film, as well as developed her skills in the dark room to create stunning prints. As technology has developed though, Pauline now fully embraces the digital medium for photography. Prints can also be created far quicker and easier with the digital medium than they ever could through a dark room, and the quality of the finished digital image is as good, if not better, than a dark room one. WE DON’T JUST DO FUNERALS, WE CELEBRATE LIFE

W

e at Wells Funeral Services offer affordable funerals to the people of Mendip and beyond. We set up in 2016, and pride ourselves on delivering funerals that people want, as our clients’ needs, wants and budgets are very importance to us as a business. We like to get to know our families, and that’s why we have a stall at Wells Market every Wednesday from January to November. We’re there to answer any questions you have about funerals and plans, but we’ll also happily talk about anything, as it’s more getting to know you. When selecting a funeral director, try to use an independent like me, and look at their reviews – either on their site or Google. After all, you’re only as good as the last funeral you delivered. For more information, call us now on 01749 670100 or email rod@wfs.me.uk. Rod Major, Wells Funeral Services

What our Customers say: “The most tragic and emotional event in your life needs the best support you can get. I’m very pleased to have chosen WFS for my dear wife’s funeral. Rod and his team were respectful, informative and professional from the first contact and gave the right balance of contact and getting on with arrangements in the background. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. Thanks to Rod on a personal level for your service and respect for my lovely Sharon.” – Martin S. 5 Star Rating

variety our teams love and what motivates them to treat every day as a new opportunity. There’s no denying that as a Support Worker you will work incredibly hard, but at the end of every day you will go home knowing that you have made a difference. At home you may, for example, support people with a range of common household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, gardening and managing finances. In the community you may support people with appointments, attending classes, day trips, attending college or work towards gaining employment.

Living Life to the Fullest Our overriding aim is to ensure that those we support have every possible opportunity to live life to its fullest, and that means having fun doing the things they love best! We strongly believe in enabling people to be active in their local community. What now? If you want to ‘Be the difference, change lives’ we’d love to hear from you. Our careers pages hold much more info on the roles we have available in Somerset, along with videos of some of the amazing people we provide support for. We are extremely proud to have been doing this since 1991, during which time we have empowered thousands of people to meet their aspirations and goals in life and to live as independently as they wish. Originally known as TACT (Thames and Chiltern Trust), Affinity Trust was set up in December 1991 to provide support services for people with learning disabilities who were leaving long-stay hospitals across Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Our name change to Affinity Trust in 2008 marked the strengthening and development of our organisation, as we are increasingly recognised as a support provider of choice in the local community Everything that we have done and continue to do is in support of our mission: ‘To enable people with learning disabilities to pursue active and fulfilling lives, gain increased independence and achieve equal rights as citizens’. We work with people who have a range of different support needs but our focus is always on the individual and how best to promote independence and achieve positive outcomes.
