he Spies are a shiny new band from right here in Wells, and they’re playing at The Venue in Wells on Sunday, January 12 from 6.30pm. A very tight three-piece, their influences cover everything from classic trios like The Police and The Jam right through to The Killers, Oasis and The Verve. The band are made up of Andy Morgan on guitar, (who previously played in a band you might remember locally called Apache), Stevie Steve on bass (who’s been a session musician gigging across the UK since the 80s), and James Sayer on drums. “I was fortunate enough to meet Steve and Jim,” says Andy. “Luckily, we gelled very well as people and this led to the formation of The Spies. I can’t wait to show people what we have been working on. It’s going to blow them away!” Check out The Spies’ Facebook page for more info on the band, as well as a live video, too.

Season's Greetings It would appear that Christmas really can come more than once a year…

Y

ou’ll know comedian Jarred Christmas from his numerous TV stand-up appearances, or his unforgettable performance of Madonna’s Hung Up on Let’s Dance for Comic Relief or even his Pot Noodle adverts from a while back. The Kiwi comedian has been living in the UK for a number of years now, and has appeared in Somerset before, but it’s his inclusion as part of the line up for the next Travestees Comedy Night at Tor Leisure

on Wednesday, January the 29th alongside Lloyd Griffith, Joanne McNally and Paul Dennis that we’re particularly interested in… So what or who inspired you to be a comedian? A combination of things. An inspirational teacher got me into acting, and my brother got me into improv comedy. Back in the 80/90’s in New Zealand it was called theatresports. It’s what inspired Whose Line Is It Anyway?, which has and always will be one of my favourite comedy shows. I did a scriptwriting course as part of my performing arts diploma. A friend dared me to try stand up. Rhys Darby and his wife Rosie booked me for a pro stand up night. I did five minutes and they paid me $10. I thought I can’t wait until I do an hour. That’s $120! Stand up bought together everything I had been doing – acting, improv, writing and I got paid. It was a no brainer. And, assuming that your first few gigs weren’t the best of your career, what encouraged you to continue? I kept going because my first one actually went really well, and so did my second one. After that my gigs were average at best, but I knew what to strive for because of the first couple of gigs. I could see progress every time I got up there and I could immediately hear the result. Good or bad. Naivety kept me going a lot as well. That’s pretty good for blocking out the shear amount of fear that comes with thinking you can make a room full of people laugh. Sometimes not even a room full,

sometimes just three people and a dog in a very empty room. You’ve played in the area before, so do you have any lasting memories of Somerset? Years ago, maybe 18 years ago, I did a show in a bar in Yeovil. The show was hosted by a Dame Edna Everage look alike who thought they were the real Dame Edna. I doubt the real Dame Edna would perform in a pub in Yeovil. Anyway, they introduced me by calling me Johnny Easter, getting the crowd to boo because I was a Kiwi. It did not go well. The chef’s assistant drove me to the station at high speed down country lanes. I told him to slow down. I had just died on stage, I didn’t want to die for real. For anyone who’s never seen your show before, what can they expect? Good times, positive vibes and a bit of filth and swearing. I do kids TV, but I am a very adult comedian in comedy clubs.

Who, in your view, are the funniest comedians of all time? Wow, that’s a tough one. All of these comics were funniest ‘in their time’. Comedy changes, careers change and their focus changes, but in their comedic times – and obviously some of them are still in their time – I would say these people… Eddie Izzard, Eddie Murphy, Johnny Vegas, Jim Carrey, George Carlin, Katherine Ryan, Micky Flanagan, Sarah Millican, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Les Dawson, Morecambe and Wise, Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Peretti. What’s your favourite kids joke? Why did the toilet paper roll down the hill? To get to the bottom! The January Travestees Comedy Club will be at the Tor Leisure Centre on Wednesday, January 29th. The doors open from 7.30pm and the comedy starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £10 and are available from www.travestees.com.

New Year, New You – And For Your Pet! As January arrives, a lot of us are thinking about getting to the gym and cutting out mince pies, but did you know that an estimated 1.7 million UK dogs and one million cats are overweight or obese? A recent study on over 50,700 pet dogs showed that being overweight reduces your pet’s life by as much as two years. Worryingly, 81% of vets report rising numbers of overweight patients, suggesting this risk is increasing. Diabetes, heart, liver and joint disease are common consequences of obesity and causes of reduced lifespan. But, don’t fear! While we turn to our personal trainer, Orchard Vets are here for your pet. We are an Approved Weight Management Centre – our staff have specific training and offer individually tailored advice on safe weight loss. Because we care deeply about the obesity risk to your pet, we offer FREE weight management clinics with our experienced nurses. You should be able to… Easily feel your dog’s ribs and cat’s spine and hips. Clearly see your pet’s waistline when viewed from above. See your dog’s belly tucked up from the side, and your cat’s belly shouldn’t sag.

FLASHBACK/ ANOTHER WORLD FROM: Microids FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One, Switch

W

RELEASED

JAN 31

e’ve got a pair of solid gold retro classics for you this month, as Microids are about to put together two of the finest games from the 1990s in one delicious bundle. Another World is the classic action/adventure game, but now with three difficulty modes and high definition graphics, too. The star of the show though, is arguably Flashback. From the creators of the legendary Prince of Persia, it brought sprite-based character animation to a whole new level, with beautifully drawn levels, brain-scratching puzzle-based gameplay and a world-hopping storyline. Yes, they may be a few years old now, but they’re still a pair of the best classic games you’ll buy.
