ello again, and welcome to 2018. It’s a bit like last year’s model, but heopfully even better. So, how was Christmas for you? At the time of writing this, we’re still get ready for the impending chaos, but we hope you had a good one, got lots of lovely presents and ate way too much. It’s good to have a blow out at the end of the year, and it’s a great chance to catch up with friends and family. Speaking of which, we’re already sure that 2018 is going to be packed with things to do for you, your friends and your family. From festivals to fairs and fetes, if it’s happening we’ll make sure it gets covered. And that starts this month. come from influences she sees day-to-day across social media and popular cultures past and present. Her artworks are linocuts, but with an edge. “I’ve been a creative all my life. Then by chance I stumbled across my dad’s old carving tools – some of which were for lino cutting – and so I just started to experiment. No studio, just a kitchen table; no press, just a spoon. The winning entry was exhibited at The Bargehouse in the famous Oxo Tower in London, and as a grand finale, exhibited at the critically acclaimed Pallant House Gallery, home to one of the best collections of Modern British Art in the UK. THE
omerset artist Shelley DyerGibbins has recently been awarded the Original Print Prize in the prestigious 21st National Open Art (NOA) Competition. Her award-winning artwork was a handmade, limited-edition linocut print entitled Cinegirl. The NOA competition is the biggest Open Art Competition in the UK with over 4,000 entrants. Shelley will now be exhibiting her stunning work at The Sheppey Inn, Lower Godney from January 27 until March 24. All of Shelley’s prints are handmade, making each piece totally unique, and she now only produces five signed prints of any given design. Shelley uses a mixture of block and reduction methods with her linocut work, and favours strong graphic experimental imagery. Shelley’s ideas and designs

No Glastonbury Festival in 2018? What a relief. That’s the view of Worthy FM’s manager and licence holder Joanne Schofield, who was appointed a director of GFM in October. “Running the festival radio is hard work,”she says. “There is a team of 10 regulars but we have to train 20 new volunteers each year.” Joanne has trained radio skills in all sorts of places, including Eastwood Park prison, but thinks training will be easier at GFM. “GFM is a well-established station,”she says, “but I want to help more people to make their own programmes so they can share what they do. “Having a local radio station at your disposal offers huge opportunities to learn new skills and the chance to be creative.” Joanne did a diploma in print and radio journalism and says: “I love radio more, but print journalism is important because it allows us to keep in touch with community news.” Her radio career started with the Star commercial station in Bristol, then Joanne secured the licence for BCFM, the community radio station in Bristol, 10 years ago and became their programme manager. One of the UK’s most popular brass bands, Glastonbury Brass, have a very special night coming in January where they will play from their amazing repertoire of music, but with the theme A Night at the Movies. 2018 MARKS 700 YEARS FOR MARKET TOWN
Incredibly, this year Shepton Mallet is celebrating 700 years of being a market town, as it was in 1318 that King Edward II granted Shepton Mallet its Market Charter. A general produce market was established every Monday, and has now been held on the same site every week for nearly seven centuries! (At some time between 1318 and 1641, the market was moved to Friday, and remains so to this day.) Market stalls, or shambles, were set up, and a replica of a fourteenth-century shamble can still be seen in the market place today. Keep an eye on future issues of The Basis to find out the exciting plans there are to celebrate this amazing anniversary.

We’ve waited a long time for her debut so it’s rather exciting to finally have it in the works. They’ve been working away on their music for over two years now so it’s about time we heard it! TWINNING ORGANISATION CELEBRATES 50TH YEAR Last year the Street Twinning Association celebrated 50 years of twinning. They are a friendly organisation with members from Street and the surrounding area, and their aim is to encourage local people, whatever their age, to form friendships with similarly minded people from Notre Dame de Gravenchon in Normandy, and/or Isny in Germany. It gives people the opportunity to travel abroad at an affordable price and take part in exciting visits both here and abroad. You will enjoy authentic hospitality and maybe even learn a new language.
In 2018 the Association will be travelling to Gravenchon from Wednesday, May 30 to Sunday, June 3, and their twinning friends from Isny will be visiting Street from Thursday 23 to Wed 29 of August. WE ARE WASSAILING
Somerset is cider country, and where there’s cider there’s Wassailing. Time to find out more about this most ancient of traditions
W
hen we spotted that there were three Wassailing events happening in the area this month, we decided it was about time we found out what it was all about. When questioned around the office, the general opinion was that it was something to do with trees and cider, but none of us really knew what it was all about. Luckily, in these Internet-blessed days, the information we needed was only a few clicks away… Simply put, the tradition of Wassailing is usually celebrated on the Twelfth Night (often around January 5-6) but some still Wassail around ‘Old Twelvey Night’, which is on January 17. People drink the health of the apple trees to help them thrive. This is usually coupled with the singing a traditional song like Here we Come A-Wassailing, wearing outfits made of rags.
Scaring away the spirits Wassailers gather around an apple tree and make as much noise as possible (usually by banging saucepans) to scare away the evil spirits and ensure a good harvest of apples for that autumn. Toast soaked in cider is then draped around the tree and a cup of cider is poured into the ground. The word ‘Wassail’ comes from an Anglo-Saxon greeting which translates to ‘be in good health’, and although Wassailing can be found all over the country, because of Somerset’s history of apple growing, it’s far more common here than anywhere else. If you’ve never experienced Wassailing then it’s a lot of fun. It’s generally considered to be a joyous occasion, and there’s usually entertainment and food along with the actual Wassailing itself, so it’s a great evening out for all the family.

MID SOMERSET SHOW WASSAIL North Wootton Village Orchard – Jan 17 The fund starts at 6.30, when the bonfire is lit, and there’s live music, a ploughman’s supper and much shouting and bashing of pans.

Want to get fitter for 2018? parkrun is a growing worldwide movement that aims to get people healthier while having fun at the same time
I
n total there are over 1.5 million people signed up to parkrun all around the world – in 490 different locations to be exact. The first event took place in London in 2004, and that race, like every one since, was a five kilometre Time Trail around a park. The Shepton Mallet parkrun began last April, in Collett Park and is the only one within a 20-mile radius – although Street are hoping to get one set up this year. The whole ethos behind parkrun is to get people out and get them fitter. It’s very much a social occasion too, as many in the group stop off afterwards in the Collett Park Café for a coffee or hot chocolate! Edric Hobbs, one of the organisers, was a recent Believe in Somerset award winner, which is a fitting tribute to someone who puts so much effort into making the parkrun event such a success.

“I think we won because parkrun is a free, inclusive event that has changed the physical and mental wellbeing of many people,” says Edric. “It has helped build a community spirit in Shepton Mallet, and also helped people make new friends in the town.” Shepton Mallet’s parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am at Collett Park. Anyone is welcome to join in, but they do ask that you register first – that way, you can have your time recorded to monitor your progress. BIG PLANS FOR THE KING ARTHUR!

here’s a new team in charge at Glastonbury’s King Arthur pub, and they’ve got big plans for it. There will still be the same wide range of acts we’ve come to know and love, and Wednesdays is still open mic night, but they’ve added a jam night on Sundays and a ‘Grow Room’ event every Thursday. As the name suggests, the idea behind this is for young acts to come along, get some gigging experience and also be encouraged to keep performing. The team have invested heavily in a load of new digital equipment, including cameras for live streaming.

Most of us think about all those extra calories we’ve consumed around this time of year, and we may be thinking about our pet’s weight, too. Orchard Vet Group is an Approved Weight Management Centre for pets, and therefore our staff have undergone specific training in order to offer appropriate advice. Statistics show that 59% of dogs and 39% of cats in the UK are overweight. Contributing factors of obesity in pets include: Gender Females are more prone to weight gain than males. Age Older animals have difficulties with movement due to arthritis. Neutering Animals require fewer calories once neutered. The most important factor is overfeeding, where family members give too many treats or don’t weigh out food as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. There are several risks involved with having an overweight pet, including joint disease, heart and lung disease, diabetes, liver disease and a reduce lifespan. Prevention is better than cure, and Orchard Vets offer FREE weight clinics run by our trained team of nurses who can help you and your pet reach your goal. The next game to continue the tradition is Sony’s The Inpatient, which has been developed by Supermassive Games and is a prequel to Until Dawn – set 60 years before it. You’ve been sectioned in the same sanatorium as Until Dawn and are suffering from amnesia. How you got there, who you need to interact with to reveal the storyline and how you may or may not get out unravels beautifully among the game’s horrors. This is another showcase game for the PlayStation VR’s impressive talents.

Neighbourhood plan ensures that Glastonbury residents have a real say in the town’s future A Glastonbury Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire will arrive on every town residents’ doorstep during the week of January 8-15. The questionnaire will give residents an exciting opportunity to express their needs and concerns regarding the town’s housing, employment, wildlife, culture and community support issues. On completion of the plan and once adopted, the considerations of local people are given a right in law under the Localism Act of 2011 to shape the future of Glastonbury. This will include housing developments, protection of green spaces and identifying commercial opportunities to help create employment. “When planning applications are being considered, they will have to take into consideration the policies in

the Glastonbury’s Local Neighbourhood Plan,” explains Chair of the Steering Group and a former Glastonbury Mayor, Cllr Jon Cousins. There is even the opportunity to take control of some aspects of planning from the District Council level.
