hristmas is, apparently, the most wonderful time of the year, and if this issue is anything to go by, they could well be right. It’s also fair to say that the midnight oil has well and truly been burnt to bring you this bumper Christmas issue, but we think the late nights were worth it. Quite simply, we’ve got the biggest guide to events you’ll see all year, with over 300 things to do spread across nine pages. As well as that, there’s also a Gift Guide for the impossible person to buy for (pages 28-29), a closer look at a massively popular radio station that’s right on our doorsteps (page 22), and a whopping News section that’s fit to bursting point! (Pages 5-19.) hristmas will descend on Wells on December 14 and 21. Visitors will be delighted to find a Christmas Market running on the Bishop’s Palace Green, alongside the regular Wells Saturday Market in the Market Place. t may be 10 years since Shepton Mallet Tourist Information Centre first launched its Grand Christmas Raffle, but its popularity remains as strong as ever. Lorraine Pratten, Manager of the TIC, stated, “With so many people in the town regarding the raffle as an exciting part of Shepton Mallet’s Christmas celebrations, I am delighted to announce we have decided to hold the event again this year. “Through the generosity of local businesses, we have over 30 fantastic prizes to be won, including hampers, beauty products and vouchers for attractions.” Tickets cost just £1 and are on sale now at the Shepton Mallet TIC at the top of the High Street. The draw will take place on Monday, December 16.

CHRISTMAS AT THE CRISPIN COMMUNITY CENTRE
A
s usual, there are plenty of fantastic events taking place at the Crispin Community Centre around Christmas. Here are a few things to look forward to… December 4 – 10am-Midday Christmas sale! Lots of lovely homemade goodies, hot drinks and cake and decorating of the Christmas tree!
December 15 – 2pm/4pm Kids do Christmas Performance – see below for more information on this.
December 8 – Midday Community Christmas Sunday lunch with added entertainment! £5 a head and no need to book. The doors open at Midday and food is served at 12.30pm – 80 seats available.
All December From December 1, the Crispin Community Centre garden will host a Christmas tree festival – with trees decorated by local charities, and one left blank for the community to decorate.
A FUN AFTERNOON OF SONG AND DANCE IN STREET
O
n Sunday, December 15 there will be a performance of song and dance at the Crispin Hall in Street, with Topaz Dance and Crispin Hall’s Kids Community Choir, to get you in the Christmas Spirit! You can expect some traditional Christmas songs and pop songs with a Christmassy twist which will tell the story of the Nativity. Performed by local kids of all ages, all the proceeds will be split between Topaz Dance and the Crispin Community Centre. There are two performances on the day (one at 2pm and then another one at 4pm) and tickets cost just £5 for adults – children under 16 get in free. A UNIQUE GIG AT THE ART BANK
T
he Art Bank in Shepton Mallet is rapidly making a name for itself as one of the most interesting and original venues on the circuit. Included in their December line-up is an appearance from a hotly tipped young band by the name of Fishclaw. Their sound incorporates genres including Folk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Blues and Electronic music. Fishclaw’s music may be tricky to define but it’s shockingly easy to become smitten with their sound within moments of listening. This is warm, intelligent music which is enhanced in performance by a backdrop of video and still projections. The band offers an evening of dusky soundscapes all the way through to seriously hi-tempo tunes.
GET THE VICTORIAN EXPERIENCE IN SHEPTON MALLET!

fter the huge success of the first Shepton Experience Sunday Market, the good news is that they’ve been able to squeeze in another one before the end of the year! This one will be on Sunday, December 22, and has a Victorian theme. The Shepton Experience is perfectly named, as it’s much more than just a market. Apart from the many stalls, you can also look forward to live music, a wide selection of stunning street food and fancy dress. Normally the markets run on the last Sunday of the month, but this one’s been brought forward slightly to give you the perfect opportunity to do some last-minute Christmas shopping – and it’s also the day after the brilliant Lantern Parade in Shepton Mallet, too. he Wells-based charity Heads Up are opening their doors on Christmas Day to the needy and lonely to make sure that anyone who needs it can get company and a decent meal. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

his new exhibition for Wells, The Drawing Room Unframed, celebrates the work produced over the last year by students and tutors at Wells Art Practice. Featuring Life Drawings and Portraits, the exhibition shines a spotlight on the traditional practice of drawing direct from the human figure. Wells Art Practice is a social enterprise that provides drawing classes and courses to the residents of Wells and the surrounding areas. Established by Molly Briton and Paul Crummay – both practicing artists with a passion for drawing – one of the aims of WAP is create a community dedicated to the practice of drawing. We firmly believe that engagement with the arts should not be a luxury, which is why we run an Access to Drawing scheme providing free and lowcost tuition for those that need it.

s there really much difference between normal wine and organic wine? Actually, there’s quite a bit. Organic wine is made using grapes without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or chemical fertilisers. Organic grapes tend to be of a higher quality and more flavoursome than traditional grapes, giving you a strong base to make a fantastic bottle of wine. Without pesticides, an organic vineyard tends to have considerably more wildlife, which is great for bio diversity, the health of the vine and, again, the quality of the wine. For many people across the UK, the best part about Christmas is families coming together. For a lot of us, family includes our pets – with over half of UK pets receiving a Christmas present each year. But while Christmas might bring some tasty treats, a new collar, or a comfy new bed, there can be some Christmas hazards in the house that could make pets poorly. Every year we see a few pets that have eaten either chocolate, or treats containing raisins like mince pies, fruit cake or Christmas pudding. Both can be dangerous to pets, so if your pet has eaten anything they shouldn’t, ring your vet urgently for advice on what to do. While we’re all overindulging on Christmas Day, it can be tempting to treat our pets. While they might appreciate a little lean turkey meat, be careful they don’t get hold of any bones, as cooked poultry bones easily splinter into sharp fragments. And don’t forget that a big meal of rich food may lead to an episode of pancreatitis, which can make pets very unwell. Speaking of overindulgence, if you’re nursing a hangover over the Christmas period, or perhaps a head cold, make sure to keep any medications well out of the reach of pets. Over-the-counter medications for humans can in some cases be dangerous for pets. In particular, paracetamol causes a fatal toxicity in cats, as they lack an enzyme required to safely process it. WHAT A CRACKER!

treet Parish council is proud to present its 5th annual Christmas Cracker! Again this year the event will focus around the Library Gardens, with live entertainment all afternoon. The High Street, Leigh Road and Farm Road will be closed to make plenty of space for festive stalls, children’s rides and entertainment. The shops will be adding extra treats, and the Crispin Hall will be full of exciting stalls and refreshments. Father Christmas will be in his grotto along with Mrs Christmas in the Community Centre, and the Elves will be greeting Children and giving them an opportunity to make their wishes to hang on the Wishing Tree outside the Parish Rooms and Library. The Greenbank display will be twinkling with stars, and this year we have a new shop window competition that is being organised by the Friends of Street Library. e’re lucky enough in this area to have a number of bustling shopping centres, and they’re all remarkably varied. And with Christmas rapidly approaching, the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce are keen for us all to use as much of what’s on our doorsteps when it comes to shopping for presents. The Chamber has recently launched its Shop Local campaign (#shoplocalglasto), encouraging us to not only do our Christmas shopping in town, but also to connect with our towns the whole year round. We have amazing, vibrant communities, and those communities will only survive and thrive with our support. By spending money locally, you’re not only helping a local tradesperson, but you’re also boosting local economies, as the money is more likely to stay local.

It's all about the bass
Did you know we’ve got one of the best Drum & Bass radio stations right on our doorstep?
O
ne of the many ways the Internet has changed our lives is through the way we now listen to music. Not only can you stream or buy practically any song that’s ever been recorded through the likes of Spotify or iTunes, but it’s also given birth to an incredible selection of online radio stations. These are based all over the world and can be set up and run for a fairly minimal amount of money. One such station is the Drum & Bass Network Radio, which is run by James Barr, aka DJ Quantize. You can often find James working in the brilliant Spaced Out record shop in Street, but when he’s not selling records, he’s spinning them on one of his many live sessions throughout the week – the station also had a good range of other DJs too from around the world. The Drum & Bass Network Radio was established in 2016 by James, who’d been DJing on several other Internet-based radio stations. He decided that he wanted to broadcast on his own, and the idea came from a Facebook group he

THE

created called the ‘Drum & Bass Network’. The group took off and now has over 18,000 members, so James now uses this as a platform to promote the station. The radio station provides a platform where DJs from around the world can broadcast for free from their own homes in high quality audio at 320kbps. If you’re a Drum & Bass DJ that’s interested in joining the station then don’t hesitate to get in touch via the contact form on www.dnbnr.com. The station is run not-for-profit, but they do now have an online store where you can purchase their branded merchandise. The station site also features a chatroom, profiles of the DJs, recorded mixes, and advertising and sponsorship space – and links to the station DJ’s social media and mixes. Sound good? A Cut Above the Rest
T
he wonderfully named Lamb Chops is the newest barbers in Glastonbury, opening up its doors in Northload Street just a few months ago. Run by 24-year-old Aaron Lamb (hence the name!), who is originally from Street, and trained to be a barber at Strode College – as well as working in a barber shop in Street since he was around 14 years old. After taking some time out to go travelling, where he worked extensively cutting hair in Sydney Australia, Aaron knew that he wanted to open up his own barbers, and picked Glastonbury because he knew the town so well. It helped that the shop had been a barber shop for about 20 years before that. It’s been a busy few months for Aaron, as he’s also become a father! Juggling parenthood and a new business takes a lot of hours, but it’s a lot of fun, too.
Lamb Chops is open six days a week, staying open to 6pm on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and 7pm on Thursdays. Aaron is very skilled with a pair of scissors and his prices are very reasonable as well. A new Street business is putting its love of animals to good use…
A
fter many years of looking after children and teenagers, Street resident Christine Parker has swapped two legs for four and started her very own dog walking and petsitting service. “I have always been an animal lover, with a particular passion for dogs and horses,” says Christine. “When I was a young child we had rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas and gerbils, and when I was 12 I started handling horses at the local riding school, where I also had riding lessons. My first dog came into my life when I was 16 and I’ve had family dogs ever since. At the moment our family has a 12-year-old rescue lurcher who came to us with issues – some of which we have cured, others we manage – and we also have a sevenmonth-old German Shepherd cross who can be very strong willed but who is learning to be the obedient dog we’d like him to be! “My daughter and I also have four horses. That’s two too many, but I find it very difficult to say goodbye to any of my animals!” “Over the years I have had a lot of experience looking after my friends’ pets, including horses, dogs, cats and little furries like hamsters, and for about 10 years I enjoyed working part-time at a local livery yard.” Christine is fully insured and DBS checked, and is socially and environmentally conscious when it comes to exercising dogs. ne of the best things about the Switch’s enormous popularity is that every software company in the world is going flat out to remaster their back catalogue for it. The quality of the games obviously varies, but one we can definitely recommend is the Assassin’s Creed Rebel Collection pack from Ubisoft. When Assassin’s Creed is good (which, sadly, isn’t always the case) then it’s very good, and the first of the two AC games in this pack is one of the best: ACIV: Black Flag. The other game, AC Rogue isn’t far behind it, either. Best of all, you get all the DLC too, as well as motion control aiming, an optimised HUD, a touchscreen interface and the ability to play in TV, Handheld or Tabletop mode.
