s the late, great Bing Crosby once crooned, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It’s everyone’s favourite time of the year, but it can also be quite a chaotic one, too. There seems to be a load of interesting stuff happening every day, so what can you do to make sure you don’t miss out on any of it? And where do you go for that last-minute present shopping for that difficult Uncle who is impossible to buy for? Luckily for you, the answers to both those tricky questions lie within the pages of the magazine you’re holding. We’ve got our biggest ever event guide for you, as well as a ton of other stuff and even a local guide to gift buying. It goes without saying, but we all hope you have a brilliant Christmas and New Year, and we’ll see you all again in 2019.

LANTERN PARADE TO LIGHT UP TOWN

P

reparations are under way for the next Shepton Mallet Lantern Parade, which will take place on Saturday, December 22. Now in its ninth year, this community event has become a fixture of the festive season with a procession of over 100 hand-made lanterns making their way from Collett Park down the High Street to the Market Place. Workshops to make the traditional lanterns are free to attend and will take place at Paul Street Community Centre on Saturdays and Sundays on the first three weekends of December. Member of the organising committee, Simon Edwards, said: “Everyone is welcome to come and watch, or join the parade – all you need is light! You can put your lights inside a willow and tissue paper lantern that you can make in one of our weekend workshops, or at home following our video and downloadable guides – details on the website

www.shepton lanternfestival. org.uk. This year the Lantern Festival is teaming up with the Rubbish Art Project to produce an environmentally focused, oceanicthemed, communally built lantern to lead the parade. Lucy Smith, for the Rubbish Art Project, said: “Our next project is a giant tentacled octopus for the Lantern Parade and we will be running workshops at the Art Bank on November 24/26, and December 3/13/15.” To book for the workshops, and for details of times, please email lucy@therubbishartproject.co.uk.

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL AUTHOR

L

iving on the edge of the Mendips has been a great inspiration for Rosy Endean, while writing her novel, Saving Death. The book is a young-adult

Gothic romance and is set in the wild English countryside. It follows a young teen called Ava who is struggling to understand her grief after losing her mother. That is, until she meets a curious stranger who knows too much, throwing her into a world of black magic and primal loyalties. This is Rosy’s debut novel and one that caught the eye of her publisher, Oftomes, during a live Instagram story. If you fancy an addictive romance with a twist, Saving Death is one to check out! To find out more about Rosy or Saving Death, find her here: www.rosyendean.com.

BOOK GIVEAWAY! And thanks to Rosy we have two copies of Saving Death to give away to two lucky readers! To enter, just email dean@super8media.co.uk with ‘I wanna win!’ as the subject line. Two winners will be picked at random and then the books will be posted out to you. The closing date for entries is Monday, December 31.

Keeping Your Pet Safe at Christmas Chocolate One of the

Grapes, Raisins and Currants Lots of Christmas treats

are full of raisins – dried grapes. These can make dogs seriously ill with acute kidney failure. We don’t really know why grapes and raisins are toxic, sometimes even in very small amounts, so keep all forms safely stored away.

Onions and Garlic can cause the destruction of red blood cells (anaemia), though generally only in very large quantities.

Bones and Scraps Leftover Christmas dinner might seem like a lovely treat for your pet, but be careful. Cooked poultry bones easily splinter into sharp fragments, and fatty leftovers can trigger acute pancreatitis. A little lean turkey meat should be fine, but hold the skin and gravy! Tinsel, Baubles and Lights Shiny tinsel can be

irresistible to cats and kittens, but if ingested can cause severe intestinal damage. Dogs have been known to ingest glass baubles (we don’t know why either!), and chewing on electrical cords can obviously cause electrocution.

SHOP LOCAL FOR FESTIVE MEATS

T

here are many great things about Christmas… presents, cracking TV, the chance to relax and take a few well-earned days off, but for us it’s all about cooking up some stunning meals for our friends and family. It’s the one time of the year when you can push the boat out and get in some top-quality food for everyone to enjoy. And this is where your local butcher can help. P&K Meats has been owned and run by Paul Jeffery for the last seven years – and he’s worked at the shop for well over 20 years now – so it’s fair to say he knows what he’s doing! The shop sells a wide range of meats that are perfectly suited to the festive season, including locally produced

beef, poultry and game, award-winning sausages, sausagemeat (which both come in a range of flavours) and bacon. They also sell a range of stuffings and condiments – which make ideal stocking fillers. P&K Meats are also very proud to say that they won multiple awards at Taste of the West 2018, including Gold for their Christmas Sausages and DryAged Rib-Eye Beef, Silver for their DryAged Rump Steak, and Highly Commended for both their Dry-Aged Sirloin Steak and Pork Cutlets. They also won Gold for Butchers Shop of the South West, and in total, they won more Taste of the West awards than any other butcher in the South West! For more information, or to place your Christmas order, phone 01458 441439 or email Paul on pauljeffery@pandkmeats.co.uk.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

A

ctor Shalana Serafina and writer AmyCatherine Beckinsale have joined forces to create Somerset’s newest film production company, Key Light Cake Productions. An initiative that originally started as a way to express themselves creatively, soon turned into a passion project with the aim to generate opportunities for fellow South West-based creatives. Their first film The Audition, written by Amy, started filming in November and features local actors Edgar Phillips and Alfie Perry, with assisted direction from Thomas Anthony Lay. The story follows diva actress Taylor (played by Serafina) and her agent Roger (played by Phillips) as they prepare for the biggest audition of their careers. Although this is a self-funded endeavour, the Key Light Cake team have been lucky enough to call upon the help of local businesses to assist them in the making of their film. Great Shakes and Runway Boutique (both in Wells) have been kind enough to lend the company their establishments to act as the backdrop for some of the key scenes in the film, and the girls can’t thank them enough. Upon completion, Key Light Cake Productions will look to enter their film into festivals, with the hope of having a screening in the area to raise funds for future projects next year. There are already a couple of big projects in development for 2019 so

whether you have a vast amount of experience, or very little, Amy and Shalana would love to hear from any locals that are keen to get involved either in front of the camera or behind it. If you would like to learn more about what they do, head to keylightcake. wixsite.com/ klcp where you will also find their GoFundMe page. Equally, if you want to get involved with future projects please email keylightcake@ gmail.com.

The Gift of Giving

Looking for a last-minute gift idea? We’ve got a range of top ones for you here, and best of all, they’re all from businesses local to you… If you’re looking for a present for someone who likes a tipple, then we’d point them in the direction of The Grape & The Good, who recently moved their wine, beer and gin shop into The Crown at Wells in the heart of the Market Place. Andrew, the owner, can discuss your needs to make sure you walk out with the perfect gift, and he has a wide range of unique drinks and gift boxes – just like the wonderfully named Tripple Tipple here. The Grape & The Good, Market Place, Wells www.thegrapeandthegood.com

The newly renovated Crispin Hall now houses the brand-new Crispin Emporium, which is packed with hand-made gift ideas from local craftspeople. The friendly staff welcome browsers, and will gladly help you if you’re looking for buying advice. Crispin Emporium www.crispinhall.org.uk

Isla Inspired in Street has its own pottery painting area, which enables you to handpaint your own unique present. The design can be completely of your making, and it’s a great way to immortalise children’s hand or foot prints, too. Isla Inspired, High Street, Street www.islainspired.co.uk

The Britelly shop on Queen Street in Wells stocks an amazing array of TV and filmrelated gifts, featuring everything from Star Wars, Doctor Who and Harry Potter, to these perfect reproductions of classic boardgames from TV shows from the 60s and 70s. They’re the ideal gift for fans of retro TV. Britelly, Queen Street, Wells £12.99

For a real ‘present with a difference’, why not try an Escape Room experience at ClueHQ in Somerton? The game is called Detonation, and the aim is to escape from the room within an hour using only the clues available to you. It’s a lot of fun. ClueHQ, Somerton From £15 per person www.cluehq.co.uk/somerton

Featuring work exclusively created by Somerset artists, the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen can be found behind Pickwicks Café on Broad Street in Wells. There’s some stunning potential gifts to be found here, and at prices to suit every pocket. Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, www.somersetguild.co.uk If you’re looking to splash out this Christmas then the must-have piece of kit to own is the electric bike (or e-bike). With all the fun of cycling but without the sweat-enducing pain of hill climbing, e-bikes are the perfect way to travel. Prices start from £1,100, and the guys at Cog & Sprocket can go through all the options to ensure you end up with a bike that’s perfect for your needs.
