LIVE GRAFFITI EVENT IN GLASTONBURY

T

here’s going to be an all-day music and graffiti art event at the King Arthur in Glastonbury on Saturday, August 31 as a fundraiser for SOS2020 (a free event next year). The plan is for live graffiti from local legends MAOuk (and others) all day outside, along with music, too. At 7pm, the music will go inside the pub until Midnight. The painting will be done on the pub’s main beer garden wall, which will then be kept in place until the Glastonbury Mural Trail (more on that next month) and hopefully beyond.

ART BANK ARTIST’S FLORAL FEAT Dimitris Koutroumpas’ tree-shaped recycled plastic work of art was featured in the Woodland Trust’s gazebo at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden Show at the beginning of July. The display received special recognition from the RHS, and a record number of people signed up to join the Woodland Trust during the six-day show.

MOAT BOAT EVENT TURNS 18

T

hrills and spills on the water around the Bishop’s Palace in Wells will entertain thousands of people at the annual Wells Moat Boat Races on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26. This annual spectacle is one of the summer highlights in Wells. Organised jointly by Wells Lions Club and Wells Air Cadets, it raises thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes. Now in its 18th year, the Moat Boat Races provide fun for all. The races run continuously from 1pm until 4pm, and involve more than 20 teams from local businesses and community groups. On dry land, visitors will find over 40 stalls in and around the Bandstand Park area, many of them supporting their own charitable causes. There will also be food and craft stalls, plus rides and slides for the kids.

THE FOOD FOREST PROJECT: POND PARTY! On August 10 there will be a Pond Party at the Shepton Mallet Food Forest! After their successful launch on March 30, The Food Forest Project have decided to gather the local community together to help dig out a pond. Together with the Somerset Wildlife Trust, they hope to create a pond large enough to help regenerate the local wildlife, and bring in the insects to work as part of the designed ecosystem. Don’t worry if you don’t want to dig, as there will be gazebos with lots of food and drinks, and activities for children. Members of The Food Forest Project will be there from 10am until 3pm. There is parking onsite, and now a sign out on the Old Wells Road, BA5 3RR. We look forward to seeing you for a tea and a chat!

The whole event is free to attend. There will be a collection for charity. Wells Lions President Steve Whitby said: “This is one of the biggest and best free events in the Wells summer season. We rely on the generous support of local businesses to meet the costs of staging it, so immense thanks to them all. Every penny we collect from the public on the day is used by the Lions to help local charities and good causes.”

Almost every time you take your pet to the vet, you will see the vet or nurse listen to their chest with a stethoscope. It’s not an excuse not to talk or listen to you – honest! But what are they listening for? There are three main things the vet is listening to when they are auscultating your pet’s heart. The rate (how fast or slow the heart is beating), the rhythm (is it steady, or an abnormally irregular rhythm?) and the heart sounds, which should be a nice, clear ‘lub-dub’ sound. Abnormalities in the rate could suggest lots of things – a fast heart rate can be due to pain, or fear, for example – but abnormal rhythms or sounds might suggest heart disease. A heart murmur can be quite common, especially in older dogs. This is a ‘whooshing’ sound rather than a clear ‘lub-dub’ as the heart beats, and means one of the valves within the heart is leaking. If your vet detects this, they may recommend a scan or x-rays to see if the pet’s heart is enlarged. An enlarged heart indicates that their body is struggling to cope with the leak, and may benefit from medication. If your vet hears a heart murmur in your pet at their routine health check, try not to panic! With regular monitoring and appropriate care, even a pet with heart disease can lead a long and active life. The important thing is to make sure you get regular health check to detect any abnormalities as quickly as possible.

FOLK LEGEND COMING TO GLASTONBURY

B

est known for his work with the acoustic roots group Show of Hands, Steve Knightley has performed in venues from the Albert Hole in Bristol right up to the Albert Hall in London. His impressive back catalogue of songs are modern Folk classics, still filling the clubs and festival fields, and forever influencing the next generation of folk artists. Roadworks, Steve’s latest solo show, builds on the success of his 2018 tour Songs and Stories. This is a stripped-back, one-man show that’s infused with wit, warmth and the odd spot of alchemy. Anyone who’s ever wondered what it’s like to be a touring musician will love this rare insight into life on the road. This unmissable night is being hosted by the Town Council themselves on Friday, October 4 at the Town Hall from 7pm. Tickets cost £22 and can be bought at www.eventbrite.co.uk – just search for Steve Knightley. “A life on the road certainly has its challenges,’ says Steve, “but I can’t say I’d do it differently if I had to start all over again. SPOTLIGHT ON SOS AFRICA

This Shepton Mallet-based charity is doing amazing work providing care and education to hundreds of children in South Africa

T

he SOS Africa Children’s Charity is a grassroots, family-run organisation which funds the education and care of underprivileged South Africa township children. It was founded by Shepton Mallet student Matt Crowcombe during his gap year to South Africa in 2003. Over the past 16 years, SOS Africa has evolved from a family project into an internationally recognised organisation with sponsors across the globe. The charity began by sponsoring the education and care of 1 child in 2003, and now fully funds four education centres supporting hundreds of children across the country. Each centre is established within a struggling school and provides learning support, after-school care, scholarship schemes, teacher training, counselling and much more. This holistic approach enables SOS Africa to support both the most economically challenged children and students with learning difficulties. 16 years on, the first six children to join SOS Africa’s Education Programme have all graduated, and have continued their studies at college or university. SOS Africa raises funds by organising local fundraising events. Following on from the successes of their Glastonbury Festival Pyramid Stage Abseil and 24-hour charity lock-in at Shepton Mallet Prison, they are now hosting an abseil from the

North-West Tower of Wells Cathedral in the autumn. Matt’s family also run a Charity Shop on Shepton Mallet High Street, known to many as ‘Aladdin’s Cave’. They also benefit from the support of fundraisers, donors and child sponsors from across the world. In return for their generosity, the charity’s supporters receive regular updates and feedback demonstrating the impact of their hard work. SOS Africa’s pledge that 100% of the funds raised will be invested in the charity’s education projects in South Africa, is also extremely popular with fundraisers and donors. All the charity’s operations are run by Matt and his family from SOS Africa’s office and shop in Shepton Mallet, and it is very easy to get involved. From sponsoring a child and receiving regular updates on their progress to volunteering in their Shepton Mallet Shop or participating in their next fundraising event, they welcome any support on offer. The latest games destined for your console or PC

RELEASED

WRECKFEST

The two Insane Games shops, which are located in St. Cuthbert Street, Wells and the Crispin Centre, Street, are the best gaming stores around, with helpful and knowledgeable staff that are always on hand to help find the perfect game for you. Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

AUG 27

FROM: THQ FORMATS: PS4, Xbox One

Y

ou would be forgiven for not having heard of Wreckfest before, but we can guarantee you that this is definitely one game you’re going to want to check out. Slightly older gamers will remember the stunning FlatOut series of games by Finnish developers Bugbear, and this is a natural successor to those. Part racing game and part Destruction Derby, cars get completely wrecked during the race (hence the game’s name!) and drive accordingly. Tons of fun and oodles of game modes and online play make this a summer gaming stunner.
