t’s been a strange sort of month. The Beast from the East returned – although this one was more like a weaker sibling than the full-on snowfest a month ago. Team The Basis is moving to Shepton Mallet (hurrah!), and the website took a wee bit longer than we hoped to get online. We won’t bore you with all the details (mainly because we don’t understand them either) but a few niggly bugs had to be squashed before the site could go online. The good news? www.thebasisonline.com is now officially live, and we’ve managed to cram in a practically obscene amount of information on it. Hopefully you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied until we speak again, and if you’ve got an event you’re about to host then you can upload it to the site yourself! As always, hope you enjoy the magazine, and we’ll see you again in a month’s time for more of the same.

IT’S ON WITH THE SHOW! It’s Jazz Hands all the way, as the third Wells Festival of Film gets musical…
W
ells’ third annual Festival of Film runs from April 27-29, and this year the theme is musicals. Musicals are very much the cool movie genre of the moment, after the enormous success of films such as La La Land and The Greatest Showman, and the Festival will feature some modern gems as well as some timeless classics, too. The Festival kicks off in style with an Event Cinema screening of Messiah from the Bristol Old Vic on April 27, followed by a Sing-Along performance of The Greatest Showman at the Bishop’s Palace. Sadly, tickets for this have already sold out, but those lucky people who’ve managed to get a ticket will be in for a treat! April 28 starts with an exclusive pre-release screening of Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel to 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet. Then there’s the classic musical There’s no Business Like Show Business from 1954, starring Marilyn Monroe and Ethel Merman. And then later, something that couldn’t be more different: a screening of the superb The Rocky Horror Picture Show – and there’s a competition for the best fancy dress! Sunday, April 29 rounds the festival off with a 2pm screening of the timeless Mary Poppins (which most of us will have never seen on the big screen before) and West Side Story, featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein – which will have a pre-screening talk called Bernstein Remembered with journalist and broadcaster Edward Seckerson. I recently spent time with local folk singer Sharon Lazibyrd. I had watched her perform but never got the chance to actually speak to her. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to get to know her and can’t wait to get myself a copy of her album. Having had a chance to sample some of the tracks, I can guarantee it will be worth every penny. This month I was invited to watch the music students from Strode College perform to raise money for a travel project. It was an honour to be asked and to also witness the next generation of musicians come together. Headlining the event was Duncan Batey who, along with cellist Gerry, displayed his usual excellence. Among the performers there was a wide array of shining stars, and I was also impressed that they all chopped and changed to support each other. If you ever see Strode Live events advertised then please be sure to go and support them. Georgie Robbins

KNITTERS NEED HOMES
For many years now, the Knit and Natter group at Leigh Road Methodist Church in Street have been knitting items for hospitals, orphanages and schools in Africa and Romania. Sadly though, these outlets have ceased and they have no means of getting items to where there is need. They are therefore looking for charities or organisations that have the means of getting knitted items to schools or orphanages that want them. At present they still have two large cardboard boxes full of baby hats and jumpers, sleeveless V-neck sweaters (tanktops) for children around 5-12 years and a small amount of mittens, scarves and leg warmers. streettalk LATEST FROM CRISPIN COMMUNITY FOCUS
On Saturday, April 28, The Rotary Club of Avalon and The Stroke association are running a Stroke Awareness day from 10am-4pm at Crispin Community Focus. Also, on Monday, April 18, our wonderful volunteer Fiona will be holding a cake sale from 10am-Midday to raise funds for Crispin Community Focus. There will be hot drinks and cakes to eat in our coffee room or take away.
Street will be celebrating Somerset Day again this year. The actual date is May 11, but in order for more people to get involved, Street Parish Council have chosen to hold their event on Saturday, May 12 as part of the council’s commitment to supporting the High Street and providing community events. This will be the fourth Somerset Day. The date was chosen for a celebration of our county because it is thought to be the date of King Alfred the Great’s defeat of the Danes in the 878 Battle of Edington, which is also known as the Battle of Ethandun. The day is also a celebration of all things Somerset. Street will be celebrating with music, dancing and there will be activities in the Library. It is hoped that King Alfred will return as he did last year to give out handwaving flags and free cakes to the children. Various local buildings will also be flying the Somerset flag – yellow with a red wyvern (with blue fingernails!). We’ll have more information on Somerset Day in next month’s magazine. AVALON SPECIAL SCHOOL NEARS FUNDRAISING TARGET Avalon Special School pupils, all of whom have special needs or disabilities, are raising money to build a hydrotherapy pool at their school, for their use and for the local community to use, too. They have presented a piece on local radio, baked for Mary Berry and even sold their amazing paintings. They have raised an astonishing £831,000 already. Will you help them reach their £1.1m target? BAG2SCHOOL COLLECTION Elmhurst School are holding a Bag2School collection on Tuesday, April 24, so if you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, bags or cuddly toys, pop them into a black bag and drop it off at the school. The only items that won’t be collected are towels, curtains or bedding. The school hope that this will raise valuable funds for the school, as they get paid per tonne.

INCREDIBLE LINE-UP FOR THIS YEAR’S WELLS COMEDY FESTIVAL Tickets for the 2018 Wells Comedy Festival, which runs from May 25-27 are selling incredibly fast, with many of the 69 shows already sold out. The Festival’s line-up is a who’s who of the modern comedy scene, including the likes of Rhod Gilbert, Alexei Sayle, Richard Herring, Nish Kumar, Rob Newman, Sara Pascoe, Mark Watson and many more. Ben Williams, founder and producer of the Festival, says: “This is another huge year for the Wells Comedy Festival, nearly doubling in size compared to 2017. AUTHOR STAYS LOCAL FOR INSPIRATION
Isabella May may now live in Spain, but she grew up in Somerset. After a number of jobs in the publishing industry, she decided it was time to put pen to paper and write a book of her own. That book was Oh! What a Pavlova, which was released in October of last year. It was quickly followed by her second novel, The Cocktail Bar. Isabella’s books will be of special interest to anyone reading this, as Somerset is the setting for both of them. The Cocktail Bar is about a fading rock star who returns to his home town of Glastonbury to open a bar, while Oh! What a Pavlova is mostly set in various locations throughout the county. Isabella has a great writing style, and her books are very hard to put down once you start. And spotting familiar locations is the icing on the cake! BETTER MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE The financial cost to employers of mental ill health in the workplace is estimated to be between £33-£42 billion per year. Better Mental Health in the Workplace is a one-day course taking place at Heads Up on April 19. It’s designed to encourage employers to

Heads Up provides activity-based learning and development workshops for individuals with mental health needs, including adults with dementia, learning disabilities and physical disabilities. We provide support to enable individuals to establish links to their local community and, in particular, access information such as Education, Volunteering and Employment Opportunities.

O
ne of our favourite spots of the festival is the silent disco. If you’ve never experienced one before, it’s basically a disco where everyone’s wearing headphones – so there’s no noise when you walk in. Each headset though has three channels, each linked to a different colour, so the DJs can easily spot who’s the most popular! All the headsets, DJ equipment, lighting and decor for the silent dome is provided by local company Supermix (www.supermixhire.com). Be sure to check out the stunning visuals, too.
Another local company, Reality Studios Inc., has developed a system where images and video can be beamed onto a large head in the middle of the disco. It debuted at last year’s Godney Gathering, and rumour has it that Reality Studios are planning to make it even better this year!
the graf wall
For the last three years, local graf artist group MOA have done a live graffiti wall next to the Silent Disco tent. The boards are primed the night before the festival, and by the time the festival closes, the artwork is complete. That’s not the last you’ll see of it though, as each piece of artwork is carefully taken down and stored. Then, at the next Godney Gathering, the boards are taken out and placed around the festival grounds.

Not only do they have a wide selection of the latest games but also a massive range of used titles for both the current gaming machines and also the classic consoles, too.

ratos is older, and maybe a bit wiser, too. For this all-new (and written from the ground-up) adventure on PS4, he’s now got a son to follow him on his adventures, and appears to have lost his trademark blade weapon – which has been replaced by a mighty axe. Everything’s seems to have changed for the new God of War, except, thankfully, the developer. The game is now based around Norse mythology (as opposed to Greek mythology in the previous games) and there are slight RPG elements to the gameplay. We’re happy to report though, that the hack-n-slash action of the series remains intact. Another PS4 classic.

Imagine a charity that’s run a little like the TV show Dragons’ Den, but with Wells SOUP everyone’s a winner…
S
OUP is a powerful tool to start conversations, enjoy yourself and improve where you live. Wells SOUP is the city’s micro-granting lunch which launched with great success in Seager Hall on Union Street in April 2016. Every three months it raises £700 and profile for local charities and good causes, as well as providing an opportunity to make new contacts. It is organised by the Wells Independents, a non-political party group of volunteers. The next Wells SOUP will take place in the same venue from 1-2pm on Saturday, April 14. People are advised to arrive by 12.45pm, as we had to turn 10 away last time as the hall was full! This is a brilliant way to help improve where we live, and Wells SOUP has already benefitted 32 local charities and good causes since it launched. How the funding is shared between the charities’ projects is decided by the audience voting. It is all about bringing people together, having fun and supporting projects that benefit the community.
How SOUP works £5 gets you two choices of delicious soup, fresh bread and a vote. Drinks are also available. The money raised at the door is match-funded by a local business to reach a total of £700. At a SOUP lunch there will be four presentations on projects which could range from charities, culture,

regeneration, community, social justice, social enterprise, education, technology and more. Each presenter has four minutes to share their idea – with no PowerPoint presentations or other technology allowed, but passion is welcome. Audience members can ask each presenter up to four questions after their presentation. The audience then vote on what project they think will benefit the Wells area the most. Whichever presenter gets the most votes wins half the £700 raised. The runners-up get equal shares of the other half, so all four get something. Winners then come back to the next SOUP lunch to share what their project has achieved and the impact it has had. Email SOUP@wellsindependents.org if you have any queries about SOUP. Senior Pet Month at Orchard Vets
When is a pet considered to be ‘senior’?
This varies a lot depending on species and breed. Cats are considered to be senior from about 11 years of age, but often live to 18 or even 20. A small breed dog might still be active and mobile into their mid- to late- teens, but giant breeds such tend to have a shorter lifespan. What we do know now, is that with good nutrition and better access to a variety of treatments, many pets are living longer than ever.
What are the major concerns for senior pets?
The most important thing for our older pet is to maintain their quality of life. Painful conditions such as arthritis are common in older pets, and a variety of treatments are available to keep them comfortable and mobile. Similarly, problems with internal organ systems such as the heart or kidneys may develop in older pets – a variety of treatments are available to slow the progression of these and stop any effects that may make your pet feel unwell. Signs of these may be very subtle in the early stages, so we recommend regular vet
