treet Sings! and Street Men’s choirs are both singing at the Ashcott Beer Festival on Saturday, July 1 at 2pm. Then, on Friday, July 7 at 7.30pm in Glastonbury Town Hall, we have three choirs singing for you to raise money for Save the Children – Street Sings, Street Men and Wookey Choirworks. The tickets are £7.50 each, which includes a glass of wine. Contact streetsings.choir@gmail.com for more information and to book tickets.

July 2017

The people of Street are extremely fortunate to have access to a regular market, selling locally produced foods, plants and crafts. Every Thursday from 9am-Midday there is a Country Market in the United Reformed Church Hall on the High Street. Not only can you buy items on a Thursday but also phone in special orders to Janet on 01278 722556 by Tuesday morning and collect them on market day! And there is another string to the Country Market’s bow, that of Gift Hampers. Country Markets offer a simple way to obtain a hamper of home-produced goods, tailor-made to your requirements and delivered to the door. These make ideal gifts for friends and relatives but are also a useful way to receive Country Markets produce if you are unable to get to a Country Market yourself. Arranging for a delivery is easy. Simply contact Janet on the number above, but please give as much notice as possible because the market is only open on one day a week (Four weeks notice is preferred at Christmas). You can also use this scheme if you want a hamper sent out of the area by contacting the participating Country Market nearest to the recipient of the hamper. If you need contact details, contact Country Market’s Head Office either by phone (01246 261508) or email info@country-markets.co.uk and tell them where the hamper will be going.

MUSIC IN THE MARQUEE RETURNS TO THE RED LION

RADIO TALK

T

Old? Yes, more than most. Gits? Certainly. Popular? Absolutely. A recent addition to the GFM schedule, the Old Gits and Hits are proving remarkably popular. Their recipe for success is a blend of funny tales, sharp wits and curious advice offered by four old friends. They are all veteran broadcasters who between them have worked at most of the region’s radio stations. “The show started through a chat at the Bristol Balloon Festival where I was doing the commentating,”said John Ford. “So I got some old pals together just to have a bit of fun on the radio and draw on our experiences to tell stories. “Now the Made in Bristol TV station want to screen us in an Old Gits Unplugged programme,” said John who has presented programmes on BBC Somerset, BBC Bristol and GWR amongst others. You may recognise the voice of Old Git Chris Wood, as he also delivers travel bulletins on various BBC and commercial radio stations. John himself is booked in as an upcoming guest on GFM’s Media Talk show between 2-3pm on Thursday, July 6. You can hear Old Gits and Hits at 107.1 FM locally or glastonburyfm.co.uk online from Midday-2pm each Wednesday.

THE GODNEY GATHERING

With some fantastic acts and a whole new Cabaret Stage, could this be the biggest and best Gathering yet?

Camping Although The Godney Gathering is just a one-day festival, camping is available at the campsite at Garslade Farm, complete with shower/toilet block and even some electric hookups. Space is limited though, so if you want to be able to completely relax at the festival, safe in the knowledge that your bed for the night is just a short walk away, then head to www.thegodneygathering.com/ accommodation to book your place now.

Food and Drink We won’t leave you hungry either, as there’s no shortage of beautiful food outlets cooking up a storm for you throughout the day. We pride ourselves that all the food retailers are handpicked

July 2017

by us to insure that the food on offer is both high quality and also reasonably priced. Don’t forget too that one of our sponsors, Brothers Cider, will have a bar there selling pints at just £3.50! If you fancy putting your name down to perform at next year’s Godney Gathering, then submissions open in September. See the website at www.thegodneygathering.com for more details.

THE GODNEY CREW #1

Simon Melluish

Job title: Infrastructure Director Best thing about The Godney Gathering? I don’t watch anyone, as I’m not very good at the music side of the festival. When I get told the headliner I have to YouTube the band to see if I know any of their songs! Best thing about The Godney Gathering? For me, I really enjoy the setting up of The Godney Gathering, so my best bit would have to be the minute security gives us the all-clear to open the gates. It means it’s time to see everyone come in and hopefully have a brilliant day. What are you most looking forward this year? I am looking forward to seeing the field full of people having a good time and enjoying the hard work that the team put in.

BASIS 15

THE

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s been a whole 12 months since the last Godney Gathering festival, but after months of planning, it really is time again for the Gatherers to meet up at Garslade Farm for another packed day of entertainment. If this is your first Gathering then you’re most definitely in for a treat. Head to the festival’s official site and there you can get the full rundown of who’s playing. And there’s a new stage for this year, too. Aside from the two main stages, Acoustic Stage, GFM Stage, Silent Dome and Children’s area is a Cabaret and Comedy Stage! So if you fancy a change from the music then pop in here for something completely different.

OUT OF THE DARKNESS They hit the ground running with I Believe in a Thing Called Love, and now The Darkness are headlining The Godney Gathering 2017!

W

ith a vocal that causes dogs to magically appear, ears pricked, to some of the finest out-and-out rock ‘n’ roll that’s been produced for years, The Darkness’ live show is a thing to behold. We caught up with Frankie Poullain from the band to find out more about what we can expect from the band and their show.

The Darkness have been together now for almost 20 years, taking a brief hiatus along the way. What pushed you to reform? It’s been 17 years since we formed so we’re still in our teens; we’re on the edge of 17. 2006-2011 was five years of falling out with each other and going mental – our adolescence you could say; moody teenagers after a golden childhood.

Are you familiar with Somerset? I am. I lived in Bath in the early 90s to chill out after overdoing it slightly. Read a lot of books while nursing ‘Knee Cracker Scrumpy’ hangovers.

So what keeps you encouraged to continue as a band together for those 17 years? Love, laughter and lipstick stains.

Does that mean that you’ll be partaking in a bit of rough cider sampling? No. Only fine wine and good vodka these days. Single malts of a winter’s evening.

Your new album is due to be released this year. What can we expect from it? Guts and glory, or the tenderness of passion in the afternoon.

QUIZ

How far from I Believe in a Thing Called Love will it be? Further than the murky shadows of prejudice can reach ;).

You are heading out on a number of dates this Summer, so how are you preparing for them? Booking flights, packing suitcases and arguing over the setlists. What are the things that you love about being out on the road? Expectations being regularly and roundly confounded. Learning, forgetting the lesson, being wrong again. Repeat ad infinitum… As a band, what do you think you need to stand out and be heard? You need to discover what it is about yourself that is brilliantly different and blow that right up. You recently covered Radiohead’s Street Spirit. Any other songs that you’re dying to get your hands on? It has to be reinterpretation otherwise what’s the point? Reverence is killing rock n roll. We have a couple of contenders that we’ll unleash at the right time, though.

July 2017

By the way, have you heard Lemar’s cover of I Believe in a Thing Called Love? We’d be interested to know what you thought of it! I enjoyed it, especially as he segued into it from Marvin Gaye, my personal favourite.

What are the band’s influences musically? And how have they changed over the years? Musically they would be My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode, Prince, Kate Bush and The Cardiacs. They’re constantly changing and evolving just like everyone’s. Influences aren’t what define a band, it’s the attitude and how reverential one is towards them.

Come and get shipwrecked at the Pirates of the Ca ‘RUM’ Bean (Nearly Full Moon) party. Featuring the musical delights of Ushti Baba – quite possibly the world’s only Gypsy Jungle Turbo Folkstep band – and supported by DJ Spinthief, it promises to be a brilliant night. There’s also a rum shack, a fruity island area and even an underwater Mermaid’s Cave! As you’d expect, fancy dress is essential, so we’re expecting to see plenty of mermaids, pirates, shipmates and sea creatures, please. Tickets are just £8 (£10 on the door) and there’s a free rum shot for the lucky people who get there first!

OFF THE STREETS

Looking for something to do with the kids this summer? Off the Streets is back, and it’s packed with fun events for children of all ages

R

unning from August 7-11, the main aim of Off the Streets is to provide fun and reasonably priced things for children and young people to do during the long Summer Holidays – there’s also the free Flash Mob on Friday the 11th, which is open to people of any age. In total, Off the Streets has 22 events for you to sign your kids up to, and include everything from Music and Songwriting (where the kids get to produce their own song from scratch!) to firm favourites like Parkour, Adventures in Science and Cookery. Prices are kept to the bare minimum, with the Cookery courses being the most expensive at £8 – which goes towards the cost of the ingredients. There are also several brand-new events for 2017, including YEAST Scrapstore Creations (make something brilliant, with a different theme each session), Bird of Prey Experience (get up close to some birds of prey, provided by Pitcombe Rock Falconry) and Rocktopus (music and singing for toddlers). Off the Streets is run by the wonderful people at the Children’s World charity in Glastonbury. Their overall aim is to help and educate all children, especially those with special needs or are socially disadvantaged. Locally, they run anti-bullying workshops at St. Benedicts and West Pennard schools, Transitions sessions at St. Crispins and St. Dunstans – which help children make the move from Primary to

To book a course, fill out the Booking Form opposite and send it with a cheque or cash to the Children’s World office at 28 Northload Street, Glastonbury BA6 9JJ. The offices are open daily from 9am-3pm, so you can drop the form off in person if that’s more convenient for you – the staff at Children’s World are also more than happy to help you fill out the form in person if you need any help. If you have any queries at all then you can also ring them on 01458 833693 or email them on info@childrensworldcharity.org. Also, and this is a Basis exclusive, Children’s World are also working on a very special event for next year! Those of you who are missing the Glastonbury Children’s Festival will be especially excited about it! More news very soon…

Are Your Pets Protected from the Effects of the Heat? Sunburn

Heatstroke

Everyone knows not to leave dogs in cars on a hot day, but it’s still easy to forget just how quickly cars do heat up, even on days which seem slightly cooler or overcast. Sadly, dogs die this way every year, so if you are having a day out this summer, make sure plans are in place to keep your pet safe. In warm weather heatstroke can occur, not just in hot vehicles, but outside as well. Bear in mind your dog is wearing a fur coat he can’t take off, so in the heat of the day seek out shade and cool places for your dog to rest. Fresh water is important too, but it will not prevent heatstroke. Be careful exercising in hot weather. Dogs’ only efficient means of heat exchange is by panting. Distressingly, one of the first problems to develop is swelling of the tissues in the throat, resulting in breathing difficulties. This is an emergency situation – if you can cool your dog by dowsing with cool water do so, but don’t waste time getting to your vet. If you’re worried about this topic or any other issues relating to your pet, please feel free to contact Orchard Vets, where a trained member of staff will be more than happy to help you with whatever your query or concern may be.

hether you’re looking for a stunning overhead video for your house, looking to record an event for marketing purposes or even need a video for surveying land or a property, Hawkeye Aero can help. The Somerset-based company was set up last year to provide a unique and valuable service to anyone looking for high-quality video material, and their comprehensive UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) set-up includes state-of-the-art cameras equipped with thermal imagery to help you quickly identify areas on a building’s roof that might be compromised and leaking heat. UAVs have even been used for search and rescue operations as part of the SWARM network, and have proven to be a quicker and more flexible way to search for missing people or animals. They also offer a full training service to those people who’ve just bought

their own UAV, guaranteeing that you’ll come away with a much better knowledge of your equipment. Hawkeye Aero are planning a one-day local event where they will be showcasing their equipment, giving you the opportunity to see first-hand the incredible video footage they’re capable of recording for you. We’ll bring you more info on that ASAP. SECURING THE FUTURE OF ST. JOHN’S

S

ecuring The Future is the name given to a plan for major improvements to St. John’ s Church in Glastonbury. The vicar, Revd. David MacGeoch, gave a snapshot of what happens in the Church. Besides the worship and services, the Church is used by the Town for concerts and social events, the Mayor’s Parade and a Christmas Tree festival. The plan has come about as a consequence of increasing subsidence in various areas of the floor. The pews will be removed and the whole floor will be paved with Lias stone, the old Lias slabs will be lifted and reused. Underfloor heating will be installed to replace the ineffectual heating that is there now. Moveable chairs will make the space more flexible for use, and new lighting and sound systems will be installed. This project presents a considerable financial commitment. Over £400,000 has been raised by the

The object is to enhance the Church’s facilities, provide a comfortable space for worship, to support education and a broad variety of community activities. f you have retired from full-time employment then you are eligible to join U3A – an organisation dedicated to providing opportunities to learn new skills. It’s never too late to start a new interest or learn more about something you’re already familiar with. No qualifications are necessary to join and no qualifications are awarded. “Some people may be put off by the title of University of the Third Age, but it is really a quite different sort of animal,” said Chairman Steve Wright. “We aim to provide an enjoyable program of events for people of a similar age and with similar tastes.” Street and Glastonbury U3A has been in existence for over 25 years and draws upon the knowledge, experience and skills of its own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. “Our aim”, said Steve , “is to provide educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.” There are local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Last year (2016/2017), Street and Glastonbury U3A had 530 members who signed up to participate in some 50 groups, covering a wide range of activities. New groups included Badminton, Ukulele for Beginners, History of Art and Body Calm Meditation. We also had a mixed choir group, where previously we had a singing group for ladies only.

BASIS

THE

36

Special events are arranged through the year, giving members a chance to visit attractions and enjoy each other’s company. Generally we need to recover our costs from participants, but we do strive to make events affordable as well as having as wide an appeal as possible. The U3A approach to learning is: Learning for Pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained – members can dictate the pace that suits them. As an example, we have a Walking group and a Sunday lunch group – the social aspect of U3A is really important. Our membership fees for the coming year have been held at £10 per person. We also have an associate membership rate of £5 for existing members of neighbouring U3As who wish to join in on our programme of activities. Most classes operate on a fortnightly basis for which a termly charge of £6 is made. Typically a term means six sessions although some groups operate slightly differently. Individuals wishing to sample programmes are welcome. A nominal charge of £1 is made for such attendances. All members receive a regular newsletter with information about the groups and forthcoming events. Everyone is welcome and it is quite alright for anyone to try something to see if they like it before entering into a commitment. Steve Wright said “We have our enrolment day on Thursday, August 24 at 10am in Glastonbury Town Hall. Anyone who is retired or semi-retired is welcome to come along and find out more about what is on offer. You can also visit our website at www.glastonburyu3a.org.

S

tarting at the Red Brick Building, walk out through the car park, past the Zig Zag Building and turn left. Go straight on over St Bride’s Mound (Beckery Island) to the kissing gate in the left-hand hedge, and walk towards the river Brue. You should’ve arrived at St Bride’s Well – marked by a seat and a Glastonbury Thorn tree. We are following the route described in the early 1900s by the Chalice Well founder Alice Mary Buckton, as her suggested Glastonbury pilgrimage. Turn right to walk along the right-hand river bank to Porchestall Drove, then turn right along the Drove. Snow’s Timber Yard is built on a site of archaeological interest previously known as The Mount, which was levelled to make way for it. Proceed across the mini roundabout, and over the bypass into Benedict Street. You’ll then arrive in Glastonbury with the Market Cross on your left. Continue up Glastonbury High Street past the Tribunal on your left and St John’s Church further along. At the top of the High Street, cross over into Bove Town, passing the steps on your

left known as Jacob’s Ladder. As the road curves around, turn right into Wick Hollow. Alice Buckton’s route continues into Paradise Lane, and then onto a footpath which no longer exists. Instead, turn right into Bulwark’s Lane, and then either left at the footpath, following the signs to Glastonbury Tor, if you want to walk across it, or follow the road to Wellhouse Lane, turning right if you want to bypass the Tor. You will arrive at the Red and White Springs where you may partake of the waters if you wish. Turn right into Chilkwell Street, and then left into Bere Lane. Where the main road turns sharp right at Fisher’s Hill, cross carefully and go straight ahead into Hill Head. At the top of the hill there is a gate on your right, go through this and walk over Wearyall Hill past the Holy thorn(s). The path emerges into The Roman Way. Turn right, and cross the main road via the crossing on Pomparle’s Bridge for safety. Make your way back to your starting point to enjoy a well-earned drink at the Bocabar. treet Sings! and Street Men’s choirs are both singing at the Ashcott Beer Festival on Saturday, July 1 at 2pm.

BASIS 17

THE

What are the band’s influences musically? And how have they changed over the years? Musically they would be My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode, Prince, Kate Bush and The Cardiacs. They’re constantly changing and evolving just like everyone’s. Influences aren’t what define a band, it’s the attitude and how reverential one is towards them.

Sunburn can be a major problem in some individuals, particularly cats with white ears and dogs with white patches on their muzzles. As in humans, it can cause serious irritation and, over time, even cancer. So protect against UV rays by applying one of the range of pet-friendly sunscreens.

REACH FOR THE SKIES!

W

hether you’re looking for a stunning overhead video for your house, looking to record an event for marketing purposes or even need a video for surveying land or a property, Hawkeye Aero can help.

If you’re interested in finding out more about what Hawkeye Aero can do for you or your business, then we recommend that you either head to their website at www.hawkeyeaero.co.uk, check out their Facebook page, or give Steve a call on 01749 678461.

Church community but this needs to be doubled to pay for all the improvements, so grants are being sought and more fundraising events are planned. The object is to enhance the Church’s facilities, provide a comfortable space for worship, to support education and a broad variety of community activities. If you wish to know more, or would like to help, please visit the Church and see the proposed plans, or email alresford@outlook.com.

f you have retired from full-time employment then you are eligible to join U3A – an organisation dedicated to providing opportunities to learn new skills.

You can also visit our website at www.glastonburyu3a.org.

tarting at the Red Brick Building, walk out through the car park, past the Zig Zag Building and turn left.
