El Niño vs La Niña

El Niño and La Niña are two weather phenomena that affect the planet’s climate in different ways. While both have significant impacts on global weather patterns, they are fundamentally different from each other. In this article, we will explore the differences between El Niño and La Niña and how they affect the world.

What are El Niño and La Niña?

El Niño and La Niña are the warm and cold phases of a weather pattern called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). ENSO is a complex weather pattern that involves changes in ocean temperatures and atmospheric pressure in the equatorial Pacific region. The ENSO cycle typically lasts between three to seven years and can impact global weather patterns.

El Niño occurs when ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific rise above normal levels. This warming of the ocean can have a significant impact on global weather patterns. La Niña, on the other hand, occurs when ocean temperatures in the same region drop below normal levels.

4 I www.swmlife.com

What are the differences?

El Niño and La Niña are two sides of the same coin, with one being the warm phase and the other the cold phase of the ENSO cycle. The main differences between the two weather phenomena are as follows:

Temperature

El Niño is characterized by warm ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific, while La Niña is characterized by cold ocean temperatures in the same region. During an El Niño event, the sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific can rise by 1-3°C above normal. During a La Niña event, temperatures can drop by the same amount.

Atmospheric Pressure

El Niño is associated with lower atmospheric pressure over the eastern Pacific, while La Niña is associated with higher atmospheric pressure in the same region. This can lead to different wind patterns and storm tracks, which can impact weather patterns around the world.

Global Weather Patterns

El Niño and La Niña can have different impacts on global weather patterns. During an El Niño event, there is an increased likelihood of drought in Australia and Southeast Asia, while there is an increased likelihood of heavy rainfall in South America. During a La Niña event, the opposite is true, with increased rainfall in Australia and Southeast Asia and drought in South America.

Frequency and Duration

El Niño and La Niña events occur irregularly and can last for varying periods. El Niño events typically occur every 2-7 years and can last for 12-18 months, while La Niña events occur less frequently and can last for 1-3 years.

Why do they occur?

El Niño and La Niña occur due to changes in ocean temperatures and atmospheric pressure in the equatorial Pacific. These changes are driven by a complex interplay between the ocean and the atmosphere, which can be influenced by a range of factors, including wind patterns, ocean currents, and air temperature.

While the exact causes of El Niño and La Niña are not fully understood, scientists believe that they are part of a natural cycle that has occured for millions of years. However, some experts believe that climate change could be exacerbating the frequency and intensity of these events.

Understanding the differences between El Niño and La Niña is essential for predicting and preparing for the impacts of these events on our weather and climate.

Grill Grill

Master Master GRILL Master

For seasoned grillers, summer barbequing is a chance to showcase your skills and explore new culinary horizons.

Let’s dive into some tips, tricks, and budget-conscious strategies to eLevate your griLLing game.

When it comes to recipes, let’s venture beyond the basics. Consider trying your hand at marinated flank steak. Whip up a flavorful marinade using soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and spices of your choice. Let the steak marinate for a few hours or overnight for maximum flavor, then grill it to medium-rare or your preferred level of doneness. Slice it thinly against the grain for a tender and delicious treat.

Another recipe to explore is cedar-plank salmon. Soak a cedar plank in water for a couple of hours to prevent it from burning. Place the salmon fillets on the plank, season with herbs, lemon slices, and a drizzle of olive oil. Once the plank starts to smolder and release aromatic smoke, place your seasoned seafood on top of the plank. Grill the salmon on medium-high heat, allowing the cedar plank to infuse it with a smoky aroma. The result? Moist, flaky salmon with a delightful woodsy flavor.

10 I www.swmlife.com

Additionally, you can try other variations--try hickory or maple planks, with chicken, shrimp, or your favorite cut of beef.

Besides plank cooking, what are some other methods? Consider the reverse sear method for thick cuts of meat like ribeye or pork chops. Start by cooking the meat over indirect heat until it reaches a few degrees below your desired doneness. Then, move it to direct heat to achieve a perfect sear and caramelization on the exterior. This technique ensures a tender and evenly cooked interior with a beautiful crust.

Rotisserie Grilling: A rotisserie is a fantastic way to cook larger cuts of meat with a slow and even rotation, resulting in juicy and tender results. If your grill has a rotisserie attachment, it’s time to put it to good use. Choose a prime cut of meat like a whole chicken, pork loin, or leg of lamb. Season it generously with your favorite rub or marinade, securing it tightly with butcher’s twine if necessary. Attach the meat to the rotisserie spit, ensuring it is centered and balanced. Turn on the rotisserie motor and let the meat rotate slowly over indirect heat for an extended period, allowing it to cook evenly and develop a flavorful crust. This method requires some patience, but the mouthwatering results will leave your guests impressed and satisfied.

For a budget-conscious approach, buying whole cuts of meat and portioning them yourself can save you money. Opt for larger cuts like whole chickens, pork loin, or beef brisket, and portion them according to your needs. Additionally, explore the world of rubs and marinades using pantry staples like spices, herbs, citrus juices, and olive oil. Experimenting with different flavor profiles can elevate budget-friendly cuts of meat to delectable heights.

Remember to maintain your grill properly to ensure optimal performance. Clean the grates regularly, check for gas leaks, and replace worn-out parts as needed. A well-maintained grill will provide consistent heat and help you achieve those mouthwatering grill marks.

And just like that, you’re ready to take your summer barbequing to the next level. Enjoy the thrill of experimenting, impress your guests with your culinary prowess, and savor the flavors of a perfectly grilled feast.

cheers to your bbQ success!

UMBRELLA LIABILY INSURANCE

When your local weather forecaster tells you that it’s going to rain, what do you do? That’s easy--you reach for your umbrella. So, why not purchase an umbrella that can protect you in stormy financial weather?

Umbrella liability insurance (ULI) can do just that. By providing liability protection above and beyond the basic coverage that homeowners/renters and auto insurance policies offer, ULI can protect you against the catastrophic losses that can occur if you are sued.

Although ULI can be purchased as a separate policy, your insurer will require that you have basic liability coverage (i.e., homeowners/renters insurance, auto insurance, or both) before you can purchase an umbrella liability policy. ULI is often referred to as excess coverage. If you are found to be legally responsible for injuring someone or damaging someone’s property, the umbrella policy will either pay for the part of the claim in excess of the limits of your basic liability policy, or pay for certain losses that are not covered.

WHY NOW? IT’S NOT EVEN RAINING

These days, it’s not unusual to hear of $2 million, $10 million, and even $20 million court judgments against individuals. If someone is injured in your home, or if you cause a serious auto accident, you could have to pay such a judgment. If you don’t have an umbrella liability policy at the time of the accident, anything above the limits of your homeowners/renters or auto insurance policy will have to come out of your pocket.

Here’s an example of how ULI works to protect you. Say you have an auto insurance policy with a liability limit of $100,000 per accident. You also have a $1 million umbrella liability policy. You’re later found responsible for a serious automobile accident, and the court finds you liable for $700,000 in damages. In this case, your auto insurance would pay the first $100,000 of the judgment, which would satisfy the deductible under your umbrella policy. Your umbrella policy would then cover the portion of the judgment not covered by your auto insurance ($600,000).

You should also be aware that certain types of liability claims (e.g., libel and slander) are not covered under basic homeowners, auto, or other types of insurance policies. An endorsement can be added to these policies to provide some protection against these types of personal injury claims. Or, you can purchase ULI, which does cover these claims.

12 I www.swmlife.com

WHAT’S COVERED?

A typical umbrella liability policy provides the following protection, up to the coverage limits specified in the policy:

• Protection for claims of bodily injuries or property damage caused by you, members of your household, or hazards on your property, for which you are found legally liable

• Personal liability coverage for incidents that occur on or off your property

• Additional protection above your basic auto policy for auto-related liabilities

• Protection against non-business-related personal injury claims, such as slander, libel, wrongful eviction, and false arrest

• Legal defense costs for a covered loss, including lawyers’ fees and associated court costs

WHAT’S NOT COVERED?

Umbrella liability insurance typically provides extremely broad coverage. Furthermore, if something is not expressly excluded from coverage, it is covered. Exclusions vary from one insurer to another and from one policy to another, but the following are some items typically excluded from coverage:

• Intentional damage caused by you or a member of your family or household

• Damages arising out of business or professional pursuits

• Liability that you accept under the terms of a contract or agreement

• Liability related to the ownership, maintenance, and use of aircraft, nontraditional watercraft (e.g., jet skis, air boats), and most recreational vehicles

• Damage to property owned, used, or maintained by you (the insured)

• Damage covered under a workers’ compensation policy

• Liability arising as a result of war or insurrection

www.swmlife.com I 13 Click the links for more content!

HOW BIG OF AN UMBRELLA ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

Determining how much liability coverage you need is not an exact science. You might think that you need only enough liability insurance to protect your assets, but a large judgment against you could easily wipe out your assets and put your future earnings in jeopardy. That’s why you should also consider factors such as how often you have guests in your home, whether you operate a home-based business, how much you drive, whether you have teenage drivers in your home, and whether your lifestyle gives the impression that you have “deep pockets.”

Coverage limits vary, but a typical policy will provide liability coverage worth $1 million to $10 million. Of course, as your coverage limit increases, the premium will also increase. You need to decide how much insurance you need and how much insurance you can afford. You’ll want to have enough protection, but not too much. Look at it this way: Have you ever seen a five-year-old child walking under a big golf umbrella or a 300 lb. football player using a pocket-sized umbrella? One has too much protection and the other not enough. Your insurance agent can help you determine how much coverage you need.

WHERE CAN I BUY AN UMBRELLA LIABILITY POLICY?

Almost any insurer who writes auto and home insurance policies will also sell umbrella liability policies. In fact, you may be eligible for a multipolicy discount if you purchase an umbrella policy from your current insurer. Of course, it’s important to shop around and make sure that you’re getting the right coverage for your needs and the most coverage for your money. If you want to do some research on your own, try surfing the Internet, where you can get price quotes and answers to your questions in an instant.

Ah, The Sandlot! The 1993 coming-of-age film that has become a beloved classic for generations. This movie, directed by David M. Evans, takes us on a nostalgic trip back to the summer of 1962, where a group of kids play baseball in a dusty, empty lot.

The story is centered around Scotty Smalls, a new kid in town who is struggling to make friends. He is taken under the wing of Benny Rodriguez, the best player on the sandlot, and together they embark on a series of adventures with their friends.

One of the best things about this movie is how it captures the essence of childhood. It’s a movie about playing, exploring, and having fun with your friends, all while navigating the ups and downs of growing up. The Sandlot perfectly captures the joy and wonder of being a kid in the summertime.

The cast is also fantastic. Tom Guiry shines as Scotty Smalls, perfectly capturing the awkwardness and vulnerability of adolescence. Mike Vitar is equally great as Benny Rodriguez, the leader of the sandlot gang and the one who helps Scotty come out of

his shell. And of course, the rest of the kids are all memorable in their own ways, each with their own quirks and personalities.

The Sandlot has some truly iconic moments. Who could forget the scene where they play under the fireworks? When they try chewing tobacco for the first time? Or the hilarious bit where they’re trying to retrieve a ball from a yard guarded by a ferocious dog?

But what really sets The Sandlot apart is its heart. It’s a movie about the power of friendship, the importance of standing up for yourself and others, and the bittersweetness of growing up. It’s a movie that will make you feel all the feels.

The Sandlot is a timeless classic that will continue to be loved by generations of kids (and adults) in the years to come. It’s a movie that perfectly captures the spirit of childhood, and reminds us all of the joys and challenges of growing up. So grab a ball, a bat, and a group of friends, and head to the nearest empty lot - it’s time to play ball!

A summer bucket list allows you to satisfy your daydreams and think about everything you and your family or friends want to do during this short season. It encourages you to make the most of your time. Come the first day of fall, you will feel pleased with all you did.

For me, summer is barbequed food, snow cones, camping, and every outdoor activity. With all the Utah rain and snow from this last winter, our lakes and rivers will be excellent places to play. Gunlock Falls, located in Gunlock State Park, has an abundance of impressive waterfalls. Add it to your summer bucket list of places to visit.

On the next page is my summer bucket list. As you can see, my list is extensive, giving me plenty of options, rain or shine. At the end of the summer, any unmarked (incompleted) activities will be moved over to the following year. Feel free to use my list as your summer bucket list template. Who knows, maybe I will see you in a hot air balloon, on a golf course, or in a kayak on the Virgin River- where we can give each other a high five with our paddles.

A Father’s Day Tribute

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the incredible men who have shaped our lives and guided us through the journey of adolesence. It’s a day to honor the unwavering support, wisdom, and love that fathers provide. With Father’ Day right around the corner, I thought that I would share a story of an unforgettable experience—learning to drive a stick shift Mini Cooper on my 16th birthday. It was a milestone filled with valuable life lessons and a bond that would forever strengthen mine and my dad’s relationship.

A Memorable Milestone

As my 16th birthday approached, excitement filled the air, not only because it marked a new chapter in my life but also because my dad had a surprise in store for me. Little did I know that this surprise would become an unforgettable memory—a day that would test my skills, challenge my patience, and create a lasting bond between me and my dad.

The Stick Shift Mini Cooper

Upon reaching the driveway, my eyes widened as I saw the vibrant red Mini Cooper sitting there. My dad had a giant smile on his face as he handed me the keys. There was one catch about the car, it had a manual transmission which meant I would have to learn how to switch gears before it was mine completely.

Learning to Shift Gears

So, the learning started. As we rolled forward, my dad’s calm voice guided me through the complexity of shifting gears. He taught me the importance of timing, clutch control, and patience—lessons that extended far beyond the realm of driving. In those moments, the car became a metaphor for life itself. As we transitioned from one gear to another, my dad emphasized the significance of adaptability and the ability to navigate through

18 I www.swmlife.com

the unexpected twists and turns that lie ahead. He encouraged me to trust myself, reminding me that challenges are opportunities for growth.

Overcoming Hesitation

Learning to drive a stick shift is no easy feat, and frustration occasionally crept in as the gears ground and the car lurched. Yet, my dad was there every step of the way. He reassured me that mistakes were part of the learning process, reminding me that success often arises from persistence and determination.

With each practice session, my confidence grew, and the once daunting task began to feel more natural. My dad’s presence and guidance instilled a sense of security and trust, allowing me to embrace the challenges with an unwavering spirit. Together, we celebrated small victories.

A Lasting Bond

As Father’s Day approaches, I reflect on that unforgettable experience of learning to drive a stick shift Mini Cooper under my dad’s watchful eye. Beyond the mechanics of the car, it was a lesson in trust and patience.

Let us express gratitude for the fathers who have taught us valuable life skills and encouraged us to embrace new experiences. They have shown us that with their guidance and love, we can conquer the challenges that come our way and grow into confident, resilient individuals.

Father’s Day is a time to honor the remarkable men who have shaped our lives. Learning to drive a stick shift Mini Cooper with my dad was not just about acquiring a new skill; it was about forging a lasting bond built on trust, patience, and a shared sense of adventure. The memories we created on that day will forever serve as a reminder of the profound impact fathers have on our lives.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, let us cherish the moments spent with our fathers, the lessons they’ve taught us, and the love they’ve bestowed upon us. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers who have guided us on the road of life. Your love and support is cherished and celebrated today and always.

Your Traditional Asset Protection Plan Work?

be done long before there is even the hint of a claim. Caution! Asset planning is not about hiding assets from known creditors or even creditors you should have known about. Therefore, you must do asset protection planning well in advance of needing any protection. Do not procrastinate with this planning!

You may be surprised to learn that not only has asset protection planning been around for a long time, but you most likely have already engaged in it. In fact, you probably have one or more types of traditional asset protection planning in place. The problem is, in many cases the type of planning you have won’t be enough to protect you and your family.

What is Asset Protection Planning?

Asset protection planning is done to preserve and protect your property in advance of a claim, or the threat of a claim. In other words, this type of planning will not be effective to shield your property from an existing claim. Instead, it must

The goals of asset protection planning are to provide an incentive for settling a claim; improve your bargaining position; offer options when a claim is asserted; and, ultimately, deter litigation. Asset planning is all about protecting those you love from unfair claims and frivolous lawsuits which seem to be abound these days. Asset protection helps prevent bad things from happening to good people.

What Is Traditional Asset Protection Planning, and Why Does It Often Fail?

There are several types of traditional asset protection planning that have been around for years. The most common is liability insuranceautomobile, homeowners, umbrella, officers and directors, malpractice, and alike. You probably have at least one liability policy in place right

now. Unfortunately, liability insurance may actually encourage a lawsuit since it is perceived as “easy money.” Aside from this, liability insurance often fails because the coverage is inadequate; the policies have extensive exclusions; or the carrier becomes insolvent.

Another common type of traditional asset protection planning is the use of a business entity - such as a corporation - to segregate business assets and liabilities from personal assets and liabilities. While a corporation may shelter your personal assets from a lawsuit filed against the corporation, the opposite is not true. If you, as the shareholder of a corporation, are sued, your shares of stock in the corporation are not protected from a judgment entered against you. Of course, it is possible that if your corporation fails to observe certain formalities, then the “corporate veil” may be pierced and your personal assets will become vulnerable to a judgment entered against the corporation.

The final common type of traditional asset protection planning is established under state law and allows residents to exempt specific assets from the claims of creditors. This may include protection for property owned jointly by spouses (“tenancy by the entirety” ownership); a primary residence (“protected homestead”); the cash value of life insurance; investments held in a retirement account; and annuities. Nonetheless, these

state exemptions are often subject to limitations, such as placing a cap on the value or land area of the protected homestead.

What Should You Do - now, if not sooner?

You may think that only wealthy people need advanced estate planning. The truth is anyone who has accumulated any amount of wealth can be sued for just about any reason. The only way to protect you and your family is to engage in only slightly more advanced forms of trusts for asset protection planning. For example, a properly drafted Living Trust, while it cannot provide you with asset protection while you are living, can provide asset and predator protection for your surviving spouse. Upon your surviving spouse’s passing it can provide protection from divorces and creditor claims for the assets you intend to pass on to your children and grandchildren. With just a slight adjustment in your Living Trust you can make sure your assets go “to whom you want, the way you want, when you want, while you are living and after you die.”
