Australia`s Michael Clarke will retire from international cricket after the fifth Ashes Test against England, starting on Thursday, with a brilliant record but strangely lacking the universal praise his figures might suggest. Only three Australia have scored more runs than Clarke -- who has battled a chronic back condition throughout his career -- and the outgoing captain is also the only Australian to score a hundred on both his home and away Test debuts. Yet Clarke won`t bow out

India in Sri Lanka: Sangakkara’s farewell match will be a big test of India’s aggression with the kind of unstinting admiration his career would appear to deserve. Clarke, nicknamed “Pup”, burst on the scene with a diamond studded ear-ring and highlights in his hair. He soon became something of a lightning rod for Australians unhappy with aspects of

modern Australia -- and they were soon able to express their displeasure in that most modern of ways on social media, where Clarke`s relationships with former girlfriend Lara Bingle and now wife Kyly, both one-time models, were laid bare -- often by Clarke himself.

Raina, who will be returning in the last week of this month to India, is looking forward to have a good start to the domestic season starting with the ongoing All India Buchi Babu Cricket Tournament. During his daily training in Amsterdam, Raina is working on his

fitness and spending quality time in the nets facing Dutch medium fast bowlers, including Paul Van Meekeren on the synthetic pitches. Besides, Raina, who is regarded as one of the best fielders of India, is also spending one hour daily on fielding sessions. Raina was also impressed by the facilities provided to him by the Amsterdam Cricket Club. “I am thankful to the Dutch Cricket Board (KNCB) and Amsterdam Cricket Club for letting me use their admirable facilities,” he said.

Agency | Colombo They lost the first Test from a position of utter dominance. Their batsmen faltered against spin, again. They have lost one of their in-form batsman for the series. They are 1-0 down and trying to avoid a series loss. They are up against a team who is preparing to give its beloved son a grand send-off. It doesn’t get tougher than this for India as they take on Sri

Lanka in the 2nd Test at P Sara Oval, Colombo. India squandered a glorious chance to take the lead at Galle and now face an uphill task at Colombo. India captain Virat Kohli didn’t sugarcoat his team’s loss, saying the players batted tentatively and paid the price for it. When they should have been positive, they went into their shells intead. Following the loss, Team Director Ravi Shastri said that

India would continue to adopt an aggressive approach. “Let’s hope lightning doesn’t strike twice, because we will not change our style of play. Our mindset will be the same.” Shastri told reporters. “The endeavour of this team is to play fearless cricket that comes with mindset. These boys have enough talent.” While they may have enough talent, they certainly struggle against spin. Fifteen of the 20 India batsmen fell to Sri Lanka’s spinners in the first Test and this is a big worry for the visitors. First it was Moeen Ali, then Nathan Lyon and now Rangana Herath and Tharindu Kaushal have tormented the Indian batsmen. The key to India’s chances will depend on how well they play spin.

Saina aims to excel in all Super Series in run-up to Olympics Agency | Hyderabad

Agency | Manchester Manchester United’s Dutch manager Louis van Gaal said he wanted to ‘kiss’ midfielder Memphis Depay after he scored two goals and set up another in his side’s 3-1 Champions League play-off win over Club Brugge at Old Trafford on Tuesday. United went behind to an eighth-min-

ute Michael Carrick own goal in the first leg, but Depay scored two superb goals before teeing up substitute Marouane Fellaini for an injury-time header that put Van Gaal’s team firmly in control of the tie. A 2-1 win would have given the Belgian side real hope of turning the tie around in Bruges next Wednesday and after seeing Depay

set Fellaini up for the crucial third goal, Van Gaal declared, “I want to kiss him tonight.” The line, however, was part of an answer in which Van Gaal explained his reluctance to single out individual players for praise and the United manager said that Depay’s true value to the squad could be seen in the example he set for his younger team-mates.

The shuttler, who will officially be declared World No. 1 on Thursday, said she was keen to win tournaments consistently. World Championship silver medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal is aiming to remain injury free and excel in all the Super Series tournaments in the run up to next year’s Rio Olympics. “Next is Japan Open, the Korea Open, all the Super Series (events). Because, it’s the Olympic year, everyone is going
