‘Big conspiracy against me, will reveal it tommorrow,’

Delhi Food MinisterAsim ‘shocked’ Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal said, “We’ve received a serious complaint of corruption against our Cabinet Minister Asim Ahmed and the complainant has sent us a 1-hour audio clip.” Agency | New Delhi In a sudden move, Delhi’s Environment and Food and Supplies Minister Asim Ahmed Khan was today sacked by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over charges of corruption and the case has been referred to CBI. The Chief Minister said the decision to sack Khan was taken

after examining an audio clip of a purported conversation in which the Food Minister was heard asking for a bribe from a builder. Kejriwal, announcing the decision to remove Khan at a press conference, said Imran Hussain, first time MLA from Ballimaran, will be the new face in his Cabinet. Elaborating

on the complaint against Khan, he said the government had received allegations against him last night that he demanded money from a builder to continue construction of a building in his constituency of Matia Mahal. “We received a complaint last night that a building was being built in his constituency. “Public perception of the gangrape is sexual assault by group of people”. Home Minister K.J. George, who was embroiled in a controversy over his statement on gang rape and drew severe flak from parties and activists including the National Commission for Women (NCW), took a complete U-turn on Friday by clarifying that; “….a rape is a rape, whether it is by one person or a group of people. It is a heinous crime and condemnable”. Reacting to a query by the media on Wednesday, Mr. George refused to admit that the 22-year BPO em-

construction was stopped and money was demanded from the builder, who paid the amount. There was a mediator between the MLA and the Minister,” the Chief Minister said. Asking BJP to follow suit, the AAP leader demanded the removal of Rajasthan

People of Bihar like Nitish Kumar but not his politics Rudhramadevi review: Anushka Shetty, Allu Salman Khan reveals Sultan first look Thirty five-year-old Shankar Prasad Shah, a shopkeeper in Bihar’s Munger district, believes that his state has never had a more able administrator than Nitish Kumar; in fact, Shah would ideally like him to serve another term as chief minister. Yet he will vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, which kicks off with the first phase on Monday. The reason: caste politics. “I am a baniya (caste) and if Lalu comes to power he will never protect me. So I have to vote for Modi to keep myself safe from the Yadavs,” said Shah, who lives in an area dominated by Yadavs. The dilemma faced by Shah captures the counter-intuitive politics playing out in this year’s election. People of Bihar, as a survey by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), a Delhi based think-tank, showed, like Kumar but dislike his politics. It is exactly this contradiction that the BJP, once again led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is looking to exploit to rewrite the history of Bihar politics—by installing a BJP-led coalition for the first time ever. Though only an election for the state assembly, the results will reverberate beyond its borders—it has consequences both for the incumbent, three-term chief minister Kumar of the Janata Dal (United), or JD(U), and the challenger, a BJP led by Modi. Victory for Kumar would mean vindication of his ability to overcome complex electoral challenges through the use of tactical alliances (this time with former political foe, Lalu Prasad of the Rashtriya Janata Dal ,or RJD), while defeat may see him consigned to the political wilderness. Similarly, a win for the BJP alliance would reaffirm Modi’s grip on national politics, help the party overcome its humiliation earlier this year at the hands of the Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi assembly polls and help the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance wrest the political initiative away from the opposition inspired by a feisty Congress. In the first phase, 49 constituencies spread across 10 districts including Bhagalpur, Munger, Begusarai and Jamui, will go to the polls. Of these, in the existing assembly, 13 MLAs belong to the BJP, 29 to the JDU and four to the RJD. Interviews with a cross-section of voters in this region reveal that aspirations, like in the last general election, are a key factor influencing voter choice; that is, over and above the traditional divisions along caste and religious lines.

platform in male-dominated industry. After the immense success of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali, Telugu cinema can yet again be proud of carving out yet another Magnum Opus with such aplomb and panache. Being somewhat faithful to what transpired in the past, Ganapathy Devudu is blessed with a girl child. With an eye on the future, the girl is brought

In her teens, Rudrammadevi realises what her family has plotted but willingly conceals her identity, accepting her role as a ‘prince’ who is out there to save and protect the people of the kingdom.

‘Jazbaa’ movie review: Aishwarya Rai back with a bang Agency | New Delhi

Sanjay Gupta is known for infusing a certain degree of neo-noir beauty to his films. Well, when it comes to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback thriller ‘Jazbaa’, it’s an intoxicating mixture of pulsating drama and gripping acting. Gupta is known for his thrillers – some of his previous movies include ‘Shootout at Wadala’, ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’, ‘Kaante’, ‘Musafir’ and ‘Dus Kahaniyaan’. In all of these movies, he had maintained a certain level of speed. ‘Jazbaa’, however, runs at a neckbreak speed. And what’s really beautiful about the movie is its quasi-neo noir effect, the brilliant screenplay, and dol-

lops of good one-liners by Irrfan Khan. So, the story revolves around a hard-skinned lawyer Anuradha (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). Anuradha is known for her skills of acquitting convicts and she does it, well, sans any guilt. But, she really faces a tryst with her wisdom when she gets a call from a random man who has kidnapped her daughter (Sanaya) and wants her to acquit a rapist murderer in exchange of her daugh-

ter – in a few days of time (the story is inspired by Korean movie ‘Seven Days’). She must save the convict if she wants her daughter back, no matter how morally wrong it may seem. To pursue her mission, she seeks the help of suspended cop Yohan (Irrfan Khan), who has a secret admiration for her. Shabana Azmi is the grieving mother of the daughter whose rapist murderer Anuradha is trying to save.

A video of Telugu superstar and politician Chiranjeevi getting angry at fans has gone viral on the Internet. Seen at the music launch of his son Ram Charan Teja’s upcoming film, ‘Bruce Lee: The Fighter’, in Hyderabad, Chiranjeevi had some harsh words for a fan who seems to have gotten too close to him. The super-

star can be heard saying, “Everytime you do this only. How many times do you have to be told? Stupid fellows.” Following this, the actor storms off in his car. Chiranjeevi has a 15 minute-cameo in ‘Bruce Lee: The Fighter’ which releases on October 16. The Telugu actor will soon start working on his next project with filmmaker Puri Jagannath. It will be his 150th film.

Rishi Kapoor’s film Do Dooni Chaar has completed five years and the veteran actor says the team should have attempted to make a sequel of the comedy-drama. The Habib Faisal-directed movie marked the onscreen reunion of the hit Rishi-Neetu Singh pair as a lead couple, who previously acted in numerous hits during the 1970s such as Zinda Dil, Khel Khel Mein, and Amar Akbar Anthony. “Time flies. 5 years of DDC. Habib we should have attempted a

sequel. Anyway, a film we the team will cherish,” Rishi posted on twitter. a” Do Dooni Chaar, which released on October 8, 2010, is a story about a middle-class school teacher who tries to keep his wife and children happy in inflationary times

and dreams of buying a car. In August 2010, the film became the first live action Hindi feature film to be distributed by Walt Disney India. Although the film did not do too well at the box office, it was highly praised by the critics.

Agency | New Delhi In a major relief to British telecom major Vodafone in the transfer pricing case, the Bombay High Court on Thursday ruled in its favour, setting aside a tax demand of Rs. 3,700 crore imposed on Vodafone India by the income tax authorities. This is likely to benefit multinational companies such as IBM, Royal Dutch Shell and Nokia that face similar tax demands. The case dates back to financial year 2007-8 involving the sale of Vodafone India Services Private Ltd., the call centre business of Vodafone, to Hutchison, and the tax authorities demanded capital gain tax for this transaction. The Income Tax department had demanded that Rs.8,500 crore be added to the company’s taxable income. Transfer pricing is referred to the setting of the price for goods and services sold between related legal entities within an enterprise. This is to ensure fair pricing of the asset transferred. For example, if a subsidiary company sells goods to a parent company, the cost of those goods is the transfer price.

Pest blights GM cotton crop, fuelling debate over risks

Agency | New Delhi Two Indian states are suffering the first major pest infestation since the country adopted genetically modified cotton in 2002, raising concerns over the vulnerability of the lab-grown seeds that yield nearly all of the cotton in the world’s top producer. Damage from the whitefly attack on the Bt cotton variety in Punjab and Haryana is likely to be extensive and has even been blamed for farmer suicides, according to local officials and experts. India’s overall crop losses are expected to be light, because the states are not major producing centres, but the pest attack is inflaming debate over the usage of GM crops. Bt cotton was tweaked by scientists at Monsanto to produce its own insecticide to kill pests like bollworms. But two years of drought have encouraged the spread of whitefly against which the strain has no resistance. The winged pest damages the leaves of the cotton plant by sucking out fluid.

The leading women’s tennis doubles pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis marched into the final of the China Open, thumping the Chinese duo of Chen Liang and Yafan Wang 6-2, 6-3 in a one-sided clash here on Friday. The Indo-Swiss pair, the topmost team in the doubles circuit this year, needed one hour and seven minutes to claim the semi-final in the $4.7 million prize money tournament. Sania-Martina dominated the match in all departments, winning 32 service points compared to 24 by their opponents at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis

They bagged 57 of the total 101 points played and converted five of the nine break points opportunities received. The Indo-Swiss duo won 73 of the 131 points played in the match. The top seeds earlier

Members of the Indian cricket team were seen ‘congratulating’ former India batsman VVS Laxman for the shirt that he was seen wearing during the third and final Twenty20 International (T20I) against South Africa in Kolkata. While the final game of the series was washed out much to the disappointment for the hosts, they decided to lighten the mood up with the message, in which off-spinner Harbhajan Singh along with MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and the rest of the team are seen holding a banner which reads “Laxman we love your shirt.” The flamboyant Hyderabad-born former batsman was seen wearing a blue shirt with bird patterns all over it. It set the social media, especially Twitter, abuzz with eminent commentators and on-screen personalities such as Harsha Bhogle

Disappointed but not demoralised by the thrashing India got in the Twenty20 Internationals against South Africa, Team Director Ravi Shastri promised a strong comeback in the ODI series and said the experience from recent losses would be handy during next year’s ICC World Twenty20. The third Twenty20 between India and South Africa was called off last night without a ball being bowled because of a wet outfield, giving the Proteas a 2-0 series win. “I’m disappointed with the result as anybody would be. We play to win. But it’s not that it will give me sleepless nights. It has taught me a lot as well going forward into the World Twenty20,” Shastri said in the press conference after the abandoned tie. “First one was close, in

the second game we were outplayed. I don’t want to give any excuses. As a unit we have played very little T20 cricket in bilateral series.” India lost the first Twenty20 in Dharmasala despite putting up 199, while in Cuttack it was a sorry state of affairs as they recorded their lowest total at home, and the second lowest overall

Gujarat high court (HC) on Thursday directed the state government to appoint an HC judge, either sitting or retired, as the chairman of Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC), a quasi-judicial body which has a three-member panel to adjudicate disputes related to tariff. The HC ordered so in response to a PIL filed by Utility Users’ Welfare Association, which claimed that the post of a judicial member in the commission has been vacant for the last 11 years. The Electricity Act provides for appointment of a sitting or retired HC judge in the commission.

The petitioner contended that due to the absence of a judicial member, the credibility of the commission’s decisions has always been in question. The petitioner alleged that due to absence of a judicial member and incomplete panel, GERC many a times outsource the work of writing orders to law firms. This is unacceptable, argued petitioner’s counsel Anand Yag-

nik. The petition had also sought a stay on GERC’s decision in response to a petition filed by Essar that has been pending before the commission. The company has requested change of rates in its power supply agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd. It wants to increase the rates citing increase in import of coal duty to amendment in laws in Indonesia.

BJP-Shiv Sena Ghulam Ali stand-off: Why ‘Kundalini can help people differences between them may increase achieve impossible results’ Agency | Mumbai

The Shiv Sena’s decision to revive its anti-Pakistan and pro-Marathi plank ahead of the local bodies elections in Maharashtra is to reaffirm its identity as the major regional party. Secondly, the Shiv Sena, worried by the applause Prime Minister Narendra Modi received abroad, wants to occupy centre stage by whipping up a “hard Hindutva” agenda. In the last one year there have been a dozen critical emotive issues where both parties took their battle to streets. The Sena’s decision to oppose the meat ban in Mumbai during the “paryushan” Jain festival, was to consolidate the support of 26 per cent Maharashtrians who constitute their traditional vote bank in Mumbai. The anti-Modi bashing by the Sena is to polarise the Marathi versus Gujarati divide which has its roots in the cre-

ation of Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1960. On the Ghulam Ali concert, the saffron coalition was vertically divided. While the BJP supported the concert, the Sena enforced the ban. The Shiv Sena’s decision to ban the Ghulam Ali concert was a calculated move to send a strong signal to its anti-Pakistan constituents not only in Maharashtra but across India. The Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray is trying to project the party as the real custodian of “hard Hindutva” when it comes to taking Pakistan head-on. The BJP and the Shiv Sena are inter-dependent when it comes to

running the coalition government in Maharashtra. The support of the Shiv Sena MLAs (63) is critical for the BJP (122 MLAs) to retain the Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra. Therefore, there is no ambiguity about the BJP-Sena coalition when it comes to the government. After the electoral success in the Lok Sabha and assembly elections, the BJP sees a golden opportunity to check the Sena in Mumbai– the power centre of the Thackerays. The BJP has trained its guns on the Sena’s mismanagement during 17 years rule in BMC.

“Human beings are blessed with enormous “self-power” which emanates from within. This “hidden Shakti or Power” comes to their rescue whenever they face crises or challenges in Life,” said G Narayana, chairman emeritus of Excel Industries Limited while addressing the fourth-day of AMA Week celebrations. Describing the Shakti as “Kundalini” power which is the rising of conscious energy, Narayana said that an internal power is present in all living beings, organisms, organizations including corporations of business and industry. “Human beings have all the equipment, resources and powers to get started, move, mobilize and achieve apparently impossible missions,” said Narayana. While citing an example Narayana said, “In corporates, the Shakti is distributed at differ-

ent levels for creating the network of resources for inspiration, insights, intelligence and intensity. An organization which is awakened and vibrating will be a self-motivated and motivating entity, capable of creating a culture for attaining outstanding results.” He added , “An enterprise’s ‘mooladhara’ is the work force which is pivotal to value addition and progress while its board of directors is the source of inspiration that imbibes a supreme energy for changing the entire organization.” Elaborating on powers within, Narayana said the powers are fire in the belly, warmth in the heart and spark in the head. Fire in the belly is the power to work, perform, contribute and excel while warm in the heart helped to “contact, team up and relate. Spark in the head represented “idea, innovation, knowledge and wisdom.”

were not interested in becoming a part of JUDA and hence, the state government should not go ahead with merging their villages in the urban development authority. The memorandum said that the land in the villages in question was all fer-

tile and the farmers were interested in continuing with the agricultural activities and did not want to sell their land at all. KHRS representative Atul Shekhda said that the existing population of Junagadh town was merely 3.5 lakh and

scale was not required at all. Shekhda alleged that “the intention behind incorporating 42 villages in the urban body was to grab farmers’ land to allot them at low prices to local politicians and their relatives for setting up industries, educational institutions, hospitals and other enterprises for commercial purposes”. He said that the real purpose of the bid to expand JUDA limits could be understood in the light of the recent amendments in the state land acquisition law that allowed JUDA to transfer its land to corporates and industries.

of scheme announced by the state government that offers an equal opportunity to all students and removes the financial burden of education from the parents. With the facility of school uniform and books, we would try to convince parents to enroll their wards to civic school and also the fact that they should continue sending their wards beyond VI and Class IX where the drop out rate is on a higher side,” said Jagdish Bhavsar.
