Agency | Mumbai Pune and Rajkot will be home to two new franchises in the Indian Premier League for the next two years, the country’s cricket board (BCCI) announced on Tuesday. The new teams will fill the void left by the two-year suspension of the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals franchises following an illegal betting scandal in the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament. New Rising, a consortium led by Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, bagged the Pune team while mobile manufacturers Intex made a successful bid for Rajkot in a reverse bidding process. Under reverse bidding, investors were asked to bid lower than the base price of 400 million rupees (roughly Rs. 40 crores), the maximum amount the BCCI offered to pay from the IPL central revenue pool to the new owner. Having bid in the negative, New Rising will pay 160 million rupees while Intex will shell out 100 million rupees for their respective teams, the BCCI said.

most important match at this moment. “It is very important for the club to continue in Europe and the players want to show their qualities on the highest podium.” United, a point behind leaders Wolfsburg in the group, need a win to guarantee qualification, but could also go through if Eindhoven lose at home to CSKA Moscow in the group`s other game or if both matches are drawn.

Virat Kohli appeared to inadvertently give the game away after India had finally broken South Africa’s resistance on the fifth and final day at the Ferozshah Kotla in Delhi. Asked which of India’s three victories in the series was the most special, Virat said: “This one because we had to work harder for it,” A little later, in talking about the bowlers, he said the team’s patience had been tested and that “it is more special to get wickets in that situation”. This is precisely the point those of us who have critiqued the pitches throughout this series have been trying to make: Earning a

get asked this question a lot. It does spend time in your head, especially when you see the boys struggling in India you think you can contribute, but we’ll see. I’ll go back train, prepare and get ready for the MCL,” the 34-year-old, who retired last year, said.

pool is Rs 40 crore. “It will be a walk in bid on December 8. The base price for reverse bid from central revenue pool is Rs 40 crore and the party which bids for lowest share from central revenue pool will be the winner of new team,” he said. The board is likely to benefit through this process as well. Explaining the logic behind it, a senior BCCI official told ESPN Cricinfo, “If you want to be in the business and if you want to make business sense out of it,

and from the standpoint of comparatives, you don’t want to upset the valuation of existing franchises.” “It’s a pure business call. As far as the economics is concerned, BCCI’s central revenue is a substantive amount and far higher than the franchise fee for the original eight franchises, of which six of them are standing. So, it didn’t make sense for us to put a tender out, putting a reverse price and ownership for two years,” the official added.

victory is far more satisfying than rigging the game in your favour. This applies to the fans as much as the players. We want to see our sportsmen and women rise above their challenges. We want to see them overcome adversity and triumph, because then we can bask

in their reflected glory. While winning does cure a lot of ills, when victory is gained by seemingly tilting the playing field so far in favour of the home side, then there is no adversity to overcome, no challenges to conquer, and therefore no glory to be gained.

Chess Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand has become the latest celebrity to help rain-battered Chennai get on its feet by opening the doors of his house for the flood-affected people from the slums near his house in RA Puram. “Since it was difficult to leave Akhil (Anand’s son) and elderly father-in-law at home and venture out to offer relief and assistance, we chose to open our doors for the affected. Facebook is killing off its Creative Labs experiment

Agency | New Delhi Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg may be talking up his company’s innovation drive around the world but back home in California, the social media giant has quietly pulled the plug on Creative Labs –- an initiative that allowed employees to attend binge-coding sessions to come out with experimental apps. The programme was shut down after it failed to build apps that could gain traction with users, a CNET report said. Apps that came out of the programme -- Slingshot, Rooms and Riff – have been removed from app stores and the web page for Creative Labs. “Facebook is famous for its mantra ‘Move fast and break things’. The company decided some of these initiatives had, in fact, failed to gain traction and is shutting them down,” a Facebook spokesperson said. The shutdown of Creative Labs is nothing new for the Menlo Parkbased company that regularly scraps projects with little output.

In it’s bid to find two new teams for the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI) has included a unique clause of reverse bidding in the franchise auction which will be held in national capital on Tuesday. The classical definition of reverse bidding or reverse auction states: “In a reverse auction, the buyer puts up a request for a required good or service. Sellers then place bids for the amount they are willing to be paid for the good or service, and at the end of the auction the seller with the lowest amount wins.” Earlier explaining the process, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said that the base price for the reverse bid from the central revenue
