Delay in bail plea hearing of activists accused in Delhi riots case irks SC

Agency News: New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed displeasure at Delhi police seeking adjournment of hearing on pleas against the bail granted to three student activists in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case on the ground that a senior law officer representing them was busy in another court. A bench of Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice A.S. Oka observed that solicitorgeneral Tushar Mehta may be busy in several matters, but some alternative arrangements have to

be made so that the matter could be heard. “...If no alternative arrangement is made, we will presume that the government has nothing to say in the matter,” the bench said while posting the matter for hearing on February 21. When the pleas had come up for hearing before the apex court on January 17, a deferment was sought by the police stating that Mehta, who is representing the state, was arguing before a constitution bench. The bench had then posted the matter for hearing on Tuesday.

Yes Bank’s AT1 bonds tell the tale of broken financial regulation in India

Bengal Finance Minister Gives ‘Zero’ Rating to Union Budget, Says ‘Doesn’t Address Major Inflation Issue’

Agency News: New Delhi

BSP leader Malook Nagar on Wednesday said the relief granted to the common people in the Union Budget has made it a hit like the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathaan”. “The relief given to the common people in the Budget has made it a hit as the movie ‘Pathaan’,” Nagar, a Lok Sabha member from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh, told in a video. He said the Income Tax relief granted in the Budget will ensure that

The saga of the Additional Tier-1 (AT1) bonds continues. It started with Yes Bank selling these bonds to retail investors as high-interest yielding fixed-deposits, what followed was a chain of events in early 2020 — the bank getting into trouble because of bad loans, the RBIappointed administrator writing them off, the bondholders suing in court, the Bombay High Court setting aside the write-off decision, and the case now likely to go to the Supreme Court. This series of events illuminates the different ways in which financial regulation in India is broken. In 2016 and 2017, Yes Bank issued AT1 bonds to increase its capital base. The bonds provide higher yields than other comparable bonds. The catch? In case of a crisis, they can be converted to equity, or even be written off. That is, if you purchased these bonds, you would get a higher interest rate (than say a fixed deposit), but in the event that the bank got into trouble, there was a chance that you wouldn’t be paid interest, or your bonds would get converted to equity. By March 2020 it was public knowledge that Yes Bank was in financial trouble owing to some of its loans becoming Non-Performing Assets (NPAs). The RBI appointed an administrator to deal with the bank’s solvency, superseding the Board. The administrator put in place a scheme for its revival — State Bank of India along with some other financial institutions would purchase equity, while AT1 bondholders would get nothing. The first problem is the marketing pitch for the bonds. It is alleged that Yes Bank employees overemphasised the returns, and downplayed the risks of investing in these bonds. Mis-selling by bank employees is not new. They have been known to recommend the highest fee-paying product, and rarely disclose costs and lock-ins. Consumer protection regulation by the RBI has yet to mount a comprehensive response to such practices.

Budget 2023 ‘Anti-people & Opportunistic’: Mamata Banerjee

Agency News: New Delhi

Terming the Union Budget “anti-people”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said it will deprive the poor. Addressing a government function at Bolpur in Birbhum district, she claimed that the changes in the income tax slabs will not help anyone. “This Union Budget is not futuristic, totally opportunistic, anti-people and anti-poor. It will benefit only one class of people. This Budget will not help address

the country’s unemployment issue. It has been prepared with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,” she said. “The changes in the income tax slabs will not help anyone. There is no ray of hope in this Budget — it is a dark dark budget. Give me half an hour and I will show you how to prepare a Budget for the poor,” she added. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman placed the Budget for 2023-24 in Parliament. She announced no tax for those with an annual income of up to Rs 7 lakh under the new tax regime.

West Bengal finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya slammed the Union Budget 202324 announced on Wednesday, saying it had not addressed the massive issue of inflation. Giving it a ‘zero’ rating, she said chief minister Mamata Banerjee had also called the new budget “opportunistic and not futuristic” besides being “anti-poor”. “This is absolutely not for the middle class; they have created confusion with two tax regimes and have not addressed the inflation problem, which is major. How can they not mention the inflation issue?” Bhattacharya told. Asked about the 66 percent increase in allocation on Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana funds to Bengal, Bhattacharya said there was a big difference in what the central government allocates and what it disburses. “We are sure that what they allocate and what they give,

there is a big difference in it. We are still awaiting funds from the last allocation despite raising an issue with the Centre. They have not given disbursed money for ‘100 days’,” she said. On distribution of projects to different states, Bhattacharya said the Centre had only given a package to Karnataka and not any other state. “Why are there no projects for Bengal or other states? They always declare projects as per election schedule,” the minister added. She also criticised funds allotted for the upliftment of backward classes, saying it was merely Rs 15,000 crore in three years that amounted to Rs 5,000 crore per year.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said despite paying more than Rs 1.75 lakh crore income tax last year, the city was allocated only Rs 325 crore in the Union Budget 202324. Accusing the Centre of meting out step-motherly treatment to the national capital, he said the budget has offered no respite from the twin problems of inflation and unemployment. “Step-motherly treatment again with the people of Delhi. The people of Delhi paid more than Rs 1.75 lakh crore

income tax last year. Out of that only Rs 325 crore was given for the development of Delhi. This is a gross injustice to the people of Delhi,” Kejriwal said in a series of tweets. “There is no relief from inflation in this budget. On the contrary, this budget will increase inflation. There is no concrete plan to remove unemployment. Unfortunate to reduce education budget from 2.64 per cent to 2.5 per cent. Reducing health budget from 2.2 per cent to 1.98 per cent is harmful,” he said.

After years of struggling with nerves on the biggest stage, 24-year-old Sabalenka’s three-set win over Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the final at Melbourne Park gave the big-hitting Belarusian her first grand slam title. Now world

No.2 and boasting one of the most powerful games in women’s tennis, she looms as a major threat to topranked Pole Iga Swiatek, who she beat at the WTA Finals. The development of a proper rivalry between the pair would be a tonic for the WTA which has produced few of note in recent years and recently.

Gautam Adani no longer Asia’s richest person after stock rout, Mukesh Ambani overtakes him

Agency News : New Delhi

India’s Gautam Adani lost his title of Asia’s richest person on Wednesday as a rout in his conglomerate’s stocks deepened to $74 billion after a short-seller report. A report by Hindenburg Research last week alleged improper use of offshore tax havens while flagging concerns about high debt and the valuations of seven listed Adani companies. It has brought heightened scrutiny of the conglomerate with an Australian regulator saying on Wednesday that it would be reviewing the allegations to see if further enquiries are warranted. The Adani Group has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and saying it has always made necessary regulatory disclosures. Wednesday’s stock

losses saw Gautam Adani slip to 10th on Forbes rich list with an estimated $84.1 billion, just below rival Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd who has an estimated $84.4 billion. Before the Hindenburg report, Adani had ranked 3rd. The worsening rout comes despite the group managing to muster support from investors to haul a share sale for flagship firm Adani Enterprises Ltd over the line on Tuesday. “There was a slight bounce yesterday after the share sale went through, after seeming improbable at a point.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, the film has collected Rs 315 crore in India and globally, Pathaan has raked in Rs 645 crore within seven days of its release. In an interview, the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ director said that the success of Pathaan is not just important but it has ‘exposed the desperation with which trolls were at it’. He added that even after the record-breaking box office numbers, ‘some people are at it, trying to find a reason to run it down’. “They have become completely naked,” the filmmaker said. “They are so desperate, trying to say all kinds of things like, ‘Don’t watch, this has misinformation’ but you know what, they are all ‘nange’ (naked) now. It is clear now more than ever that the ones who run the agenda are not people, it is invested right-wing trolls. People came out with love and a lot of it. But they want to create this misinformation. It is just manufactured,” he told. Pathaan was embroiled in a massive pool of controversy ever since the release of its first song Besharam Rang.

From religious identities and ideologies to the colour of the clothes worn by the actors, the song had whipped up a storm. It sparked outrage after Deepika was seen donning a “saffron bikini” in one of the scenes. Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra called her outfit in the song “objectionable” and threatened makers to stall the film’s release.

prescribed in old tax regime. The move will lead to a saving of Rs 33,800 for those earning up to Rs 7 lakh annually and opting for new tax regime. Those with income up to Rs 10 lakh would save Rs 23,400 and Rs 49,400 saving would accrue to those earning up to Rs 15 lakh. Lost trailer: Yami Gautam plays a hard-as-nails crime reporter in the Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury film

A journalist trying to piece together the puzzle of a missing person’s story, with a sense of danger hanging heavy. The trailer of Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s feature film Lost stars Yami Gautam as crime reporter Riddhi Sahani who seems to pull no punches and is relentless in the pursuit of truth. The two-minute-19-second trailer begins with the disclaimer that around 665 people go missing in India every year. Every two minutes a person goes missing, according to the 2019 report of the National Crime Records Bureau, which is followed by Yami’s voiceover posing the question — what’s more important for a reporter: the truth or to do the right thing? The scene then moves to the Amherst Police Station in Kolkata where a woman lodges a report for her brother, Ishan Bharti, who has been missing for two weeks. Riddhi calls Ishan’s case a love story, while Ishan’s family allege that the police have been harassing them on the pretext of interrogation. The law enforcement authorities, on the other hand, think Ishan is involved with an extremist group. The police are not sure whether Ishan is missing or absconding. What follows is Riddhi challenging the police’s version and running a parallel investigation all by herself. In the process, she makes enemies with people in power and there’s a word of caution from her boss to move away from the story. With Riddhi determined to get to the bottom of the truth, the wait is on to see how Aniruddha – the director of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Pink – has tied it all in this mystery thriller inspired by true events.

There were no substantive negative surprises. The Budget was focused on all aspects that can help India grow including Agriculture, infrastructure capital outlay, Green Energy, Tourism, Youth skilling while also providing for the economically weaker sections. A key focus was on improving the ease of doing

business, continuing digital thrust, promoting entrepreneurship, simplifying regulations and compliance, and indicating a glide path to fiscal consolidation – which collectively will unleash the potential of India to grow into an economic superpower in the next decade.”, Shanti Ekambaram, Whole Time Director, Kotak Mahindra Bank.

All-rounder budget from the FM – prudent and growth-oriented – with practically all segments receiving a positive touch! FM has managed to focus strongly on capex/investment and spur domestic consumption and still managed to bring down fiscal deficit to 5.9%. And all of this without bunging in any unreal numbers across govt. borrowings and govt. expenses/subsidies OR on tax revenues, divestment target, etc. I believe this budget is likely to create a multiplier impact on the economy. Specific focus on the Infrastructure sector through a massive outlay of INR 10L crore will have a positive impact across segments. Significant measures taken towards “ease of doing business”, including sweeping reforms through the National Data Governance Policy

& skilling of our Youth, will aid businesses in improving their costcompetitiveness. Rural incomes will see a boost with the support provided through technology, valueadded crop cultivation & increase in credit to agriculture & allied activities. Large-scale inclusion as well as efficiencies will come from digital initiatives announced across the board.
