Rip women entering Sabarimala temple in half: Actor Kollam Thulasi

Kollam: Actor Kollam Thulasi made a bizarre statement on Friday saying women who come to enter the Sabarimala temple in Kerala, the revered shrine of Lord Ayyappa thrown open after the Supreme Court verdict, must be ripped in half. The horrifying remark by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporter at an NDA rally did not end there. Thulasi said that after ripping apart women entering the temple in half, one half should be thrown at the Chief Minister’s Office in Thiruvananthapuram while the other half should be sent to Delhi. Kollam Kanjaveli Kuttilazhikathu Thulasidharan Nair is an actor in Malayalam cinema and was speaking in Kerala. The Supreme Court last month revoked the century old ban on women between 10 to 50 years from entering the Sabarimala temple. The apex court’s verdict of allowing women of menstruating age to the shrine has drawn criticism from several quarters. Temple authorities had said the ban was essential to the rites related to the temple’s chief deity, lord Ayyappa, considered eternally celibate.

When an internet user types a website on his browser, the broadband or Internet modem transmits that name to a system called resolver-- which converts the website name into numeric form containing code and server address of the website. ICANN has asked all internet service providers to upgrade their software that resolves

The keys required to accesses the DNSSEC central server system called root zone were implemented in 2010 and hence were required to be upgraded for protection.

Rahul Gandhi serial liar, manufacturer of fake news: BJP on Rafale charges

New Delhi: Facing relentless attack from Rahul Gandhi on the Rafale deal, the BJP on Friday alleged the Congress president was a “serial liar” and “manufacturer of fake news” and his repeated lies cannot substitute the truth of the deal. Citing comments of Rafale’s French manufacturer Dassault Aviation’s CEO Eric Trappier to reject Gandhi’s allegations, Union minister Piyush Goyal said the French government and Dassault have “exposed” Gandhi’s “fake news” and it was high

time for him to stop lying. Asserting that the people of India trusted Narendra Modi, Goyal also rejected the suggestion that the Congress has used the issue of alleged corruption in the Rafale deal to create a perception against the prime minister. Goyal said an “issue-less” party and its leadership bereft of truth are no substitute to Modi and his good governance. The union minister was fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party to reject Congress’s charges on the Rafale deal.

Turning dirty coal into clean energy

If India’s need for energy security (reduction in energy imports) seems at odds with its need for clean energy (reduction in energy related air pollution), can indigenous coal provide some relief to a large and complex problem? The answer is yes, if new technologies are adopted for gasifying coal and usher in the methanol economy. The lyrics of the Kaala re (coal bazaari) song from the 2012 film Gangs of Wasseypur 2 centres around coal being dark and dirty. The song aptly describes the concerns about our coal. Indian coal has gained this reputation due to its high ash content and there is a global campaign to phase out coal completely. India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to have grown at 6.7% in 2017-18, which could rise to 8% in the future depending on the effectiveness of economic reforms. As GDP growth is positively correlated to energy requirement, we can expect strong energy demand in the coming years. Given that India is rich in coal reserves, there could be a way in which we can create clean energy security through coal to meet our growing demand. India’s energy consumption is projected at 33,899 Terawatt hours (TWh) by 2047. The energy consumption is expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.87% from the current 8,133 TWh. The worrying part is that energy consumption growth is weighted towards fossil fuel (coal + crude oil) consumption, which is an environmental challenge. The challenge is greater because of our excessive dependence on the import of crude oil (81% of total crude oil consumption), and because Indian coal comprises mostly of inferior non-coking coal (67% of total coal deposits) which causes more air pollution. It may give an impression that India’s energy security needs are at odds with her Conference of the Parties 21—Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (COP21-INDC) targets. However, we can achieve clean energy security by adopting technological advancements in converting coal to methanol, a liquid fuel. Methanol, which can be derived from coal, can be blended in petrol. Dimethyl ether (DME), which can be further derived from methanol can be blended in diesel, as well as in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking. Collectively, this coal conversion to methanol and its derivatives is referred to as “methanol economy”, advocated by George A. Olah, and suggests a future economy in which methanol and DME could potentially replace fossil fuels. China had embarked on a journey to convert coal to methanol, using various types of gasifier technologies (not just Chinese, but American technologies, including fixed-bed, fluidized bed and entrained flow gasifiers) for different types of coal.

Festive cheer for motorcycle customers

Prices to fall by up to Rs. 2500/- following new insurance ruling Mumbai : A new circular, issued by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) on Tuesday, October 9, is set to bring cheer for motorcycle customers across the country. As per this circular, customers would be required to buy only one year of compulsory personal accident (CPA) cover policy, and not a five-year cover as had been ruled by the regulatory body earlier. This change will bring respite to the customers as it reduces the upfront cost of insurance by Rs. 2500/depending on specific models. The insurance companies had recently floated products and insurance covers of Personal Accident Insurance bundled with Third Party Insurance with tenure of five years, after the IRDA had issued directives to this effect. However, the new circular from IRDA has directed general insurers to offer one-year CPA cover for the owner-driver.

in a fourth innings on Asian pitches. Only two visiting teams to Asia have ever scored higher in a fourth innings chase than the 362-8 scratched out with astonishing grit and defiance by Paine’s men. It followed a calamitous batting collapse of 10-60 in the first innings, which had appeared a terminal setback in the context of the match. All that, and without the country’s two best batsmen in former captain Steve Smith and David Warner, who remain suspended for their parts in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal. In their absence, Khawaja emerged as the team’s safest hands in the rejigged order, having compiled the highest ever fourth innings score in the continent by a non-Asian batsman.

Gujarat High Court seeks govt’s response on attacks against migrants

VADODARA: The Gujarat High Court on Thursday directed the state government to file an affidavit on the recent attacks on migrants while admitting a petition seeking action against the perpetrators. The public interest litigation, filed by advocate and social activist Khemchand Koshti from Ahmedabad, also challenged the “action or inaction of the state as well as the state police in not taking any preventive measures” to prevent the attacks on the migrants. The petitioner stated that this was not only “illegal” and “unreasonable” but also in violation of Article 14 (right to equality), Article 15 (prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth), Article 19 (freedom to reside or settle anywhere in India) and 21 (right to life and personal liberty) of the Constitution. The petition stated

‘We may have made a mistake’: Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor sits on day-long fast

that more than two lakh migrants have fled Gujarat and returned to their home states after the rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha following which “some political leaders addressed meetings and gave inflammatory speeches to provoke local inhabitants and thereafter the incidents of violence/attacks on migrants spread over the state”. The state government and the DGP, who have been made

respondents in the PIL, have been held responsible for “not taking preventive measures to prevent such incidents and not providing proper protection/ security to migrants”. “Migrants residing in the state from many years have integrated themselves into the culture and ethos of the state while earning their livelihood. They have also been a contributor to the development of Gujarat,” the PIL added.

Under fire for inciting the recent attacks on migrants in Gujarat and the alleged role of his outfit — Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena (GKTS) — in the incident, Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor on Thursday observed a day-long symbolic ‘sadbhavna’ fast in Ahmedabad. He said his outfit might have committed a mistake, but it was not their culture to harass or mistreat the poor. “We (Thakors) may have committed a mistake. We are unhappy, but it is not our culture to harass or mistreat poor. We have been portrayed as looters.

Attack on migrants BJP conspiracy, In Violation of the Constitution, Hinduism Treated as First Among sack Vijay Rupani: Congress Equals in Gujarat

Gandhinagar : Days after the BJP government in Gujarat accused the Congress of inciting violence against north Indians, the Congress on Friday hit back by demanding that the Centre impose President’s Rule in the State after sacking Chief Minister Vijay Rupani for failing to maintain law and order. At a press conference at the party’s headquarters, Shaktisinh Gohil, senior Congress leader from Gujarat, said the exodus from the State in the wake of attacks on north Indians following the rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district “indicates that law and order in the State has collapsed”. Mr. Gohil

said the violence was a BJP conspiracy to drive out people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, among others, who worked in the State’s industrial units. He cited official figures of the Railways to show that data showing a 137% jump in passenger traffic over the corresponding period last year was proof of an exodus. The Congress leader said 165 FIRs had been filed in connection with the violence. He released photos that appeared to show some of the key accused alongside BJP lawmakers. Condemning the ‘objectionable language’ used by Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor in the aftermath of the rape, Mr. Gohil.

Gandhinagar : In a country constitutionally wedded to the ideals of secularism, can a state government promote one religion while ignoring the others? In Gujarat, over the last two decades under the rule of the BJP, there are numerous instances that can be cited that point in this direction. The latest example comes in the form of disclosures in a public interest litigation filed before the Gujarat high court by Mujahid Nafees, a member of a social organisation called Minority Co-ordination Committee. The PIL alleges that the Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board (PYVB), constituted by the Gujarat government in 1995 for developing religious sites – such

as providing better amenities to the visiting devotees – has focused on promoting and developing only Hindu religious sites over all these years. The petitioner has stated that initially, religious shrines such as Ambaji, Dakor, Girnar, Palitana, Somnath and Dwarka were declared as ‘Pavitra Yatradhams’. “However, the list has grown exponentially since then and now the temples covered under the Pavitra Yatradham Board are around 358. It is respectfully submitted that the aforesaid list does not contain even a single religious shrine belonging to Muslim, Sikh, Jain, Christian, Baudh, Zoroastrian or other religions,” the petitioner has stated.

Federal Reserve ‘out of control’, says Donald Trump

Washington : President Donald Trump has intensified his attack on the US Federal Reserve following this week’s plunge in stock prices, saying the central bank is “out of control” in raising interest rates, but ruled out firing its head Jerome Powell. Trump’s remarks on Thursday were the latest in series of recent barrages he has unleashed at the Fed. The Fed under his hand-picked chairman Powell has been gradually raising rates as the economy has strengthened to prevent a run-up in inflation. “I think the Fed is out of control. I think what they’re doing is wrong. Under the Obama administration, you had a lot of help because they had very little interest,” Trump told reporters at the White House Thursday while responding to questions on the down sliding of the stock market for a second consecutive day. While the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 546 points, the S&P 500 tumbled 2.1 per cent and Nasdaq Composite by 1.3 per cent. “When you talk about economies, our economy is far better than that. But we have actually — we’re paying interest. They weren’t. They were using the funny money. But I think the Fed is far too stringent, and they’re making a mistake and it’s not right.

Washington : The US Supreme Court with new Justice Brett Kavanaugh issued two decisions on Thursday that helped clear the way for Tennessee to execute an inmate convicted of murdering two men in 1983. Edmund Zagorski, 63, had been set to be executed on Thursday but a few hours before the Supreme Court’s decision Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted a 10-day reprieve to allow the case to wind itself through the courts and to consider the inmate’s request to be put to death by electrocution. Kavanaugh’s name was not on the Supreme Court’s two decisions that were offered without elaboration, so it was not clear how the conservative justice voted in what was likely his first ruling in his new post. Liberal justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor dissented in both decisions. In its first decision, the court denied a request to hear a case brought by Zagorski and other Tennessee death row inmates over the state’s lethal injection drug protocol. The mix includes a compound used in flawed executions in Oklahoma and Arizona where witnesses said inmates twisted in pain on death chamber gurneys as drugs to halt breathing and cause cardiac failure took effect.
