‘The Hundred’ will reduce difference between good and ordinary, says Ganguly Kolkata : Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who is also a member of the MCC’s World Cricket Committee, is not in favour of tinkering with the hugely popular Twenty20 format as mooted by the England and Wales Cricket Board. The ECB has proposed to overhaul domestic Twenty20 tournament, making it ‘The Hundred’ which could feature 15 six-ball overs per side and a final 10-ball over. The exact details are yet to be finalised, with the eight-team tournament to begin in 2020. “You got to be very careful

that it should not be such that before a spectator comes and blinks, the thing (match) is over. The shorter the format gets, the difference between the very good and the ordinary becomes much lesser,” Ganguly, who is the mentor of Pro Star League, an Under-16 all-India cricket tournament, said. “The spectator wants the fun and pressure to go on for a certain period of time and then find genuine talent and genuine winners. We will have to wait and see how shorter it gets.” Ganguly firmly believed that the Test cricket will remain

the ultimate challenge, even with the commercial success of the T20 format. “It requires concentration, skill, technique. T20 will remain, it’s commercial and fun but the real version will be the longer format of the game. It is still the biggest challenge. “You have to come and bowl in the morning and then in the afternoon and then at tea time when you’re tired fielding all day, you still have to bowl at 140 kilometre per hour, that’s why it’s tough,” he said. A Brazil football fan, Ganguly said he has plans to watch the World Cup final in Russia on July 15.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Friday that the player's father and agent, Neymar Sr., has told PSG his son wants to leave immediately.

Neymar on target to regain fitness by World Cup but PSG future unclear Madrid : Brazil forward Neymar is focusing on getting fully fit in time for next month’s World Cup following foot surgery but his future at Paris St Germain looks increasingly uncertain. He was absent from PSG’s Ligue 1 title celebrations in April although he was at the Stade de France on Tuesday to watch his side beat third-tier Les Herbiers 2-0 in the French Cup final to complete a domestic treble. Reports in French and Spanish media say Neymar, who joined the Ligue 1 club from Barcelona for a record 222 million euros ($265.18 million) last August, has told PSG directors he wants to quit the club after only one season. Pressed on the topic by reporters in his preLigue 1 match news conference on Friday, PSG coach Unai Emery said: “(Sports director) Antero Henrique is not far from here and he could come and answer, or why not even Neymar himself.” The latest media reports say the Brazilian now wants to move to Real Madrid, who tried to sign him in 2013 before he opted to join Barcelona from Santos. Spanish newspaper Marca reported on Friday that the player’s father and agent, Neymar Sr, has told PSG his son wants to leave immediately. It said his father met Real directors in December on the day Cristiano Ronaldo received the Ballon d’Or in Paris. The 26-year-old Neymar has been out of action since spraining his ankle and fracturing his fifth metatarsal on Feb. 25, which led him to undergo surgery in Brazil. He had chalked up 28 goals and 16 assists in 30 appearances in all competitions for PSG before his injury.

Jaipur : Kings XI Punjab co-owner Preity Zinta slammed a popular media outlet on Friday after they wrote an article on a conversation between her and team mentor Virender Sehwag, calling it fake news. A report by Mumbai Mirror said that the Bollywood actress slammed Sehwag after defeat against Rajasthan Royals. The report even said that an angry Sehwag could quit the franchise. However, Preity took to social media, saying that the conversation between the two has been blown out of proportion. “Mumbai Mirror gets it wrong again because we didn’t do Media net & pay them to write

articles cuz that’s the only time they get it right. A conversation between Viru & me has been blown out of proportion & suddenly I’m a Villian ! Wow ! #fakenews,” she wrote on Twitter. The report said that Preity approached Sehwag even before the players had retired to the change rooms after the match and questioned him about the ‘tactics’ used during the game. “Viru had told the other owners to rein in Preity. He told the owners that he’ll not comment on Preity’s acting chops and she should refrain from talking about his cricketing acumen,” Mumbai Mirror quoted a franchise source.

People know me today only because of Mumbai Indians, says Krunal Pandya Jaipur : Mumbai Indians allrounder Krunal Pandya journey to the top has been one filled with struggles and immense sacrifices. It is an inspiring tale as the elder of the Pandya brothers went through one of the biggest lows in his career to bag a lucrative IPL contract with Mumbai Indians. In a recent chat with Mumbai Indians, Krunal revealed his moment of reckoning which occurred after an Under-23 match for his state team of Baroda against Karnataka. Recalling the immense sacrifices made by his parents, Pandya said that once he faced the axe he was shattered and left in grief. However, not among the ones to get bogged down, Krunal kept his chin up and changed his life in a couple of years. Recalling the troubled

period Pandya said, “I had my reality check during a U23 game- Baroda vs Karnataka. This was the turning point of my life. It was the end of the 4th days play, we were trying to save the game.I played a poor shot and got out, and was dropped from the team immediately. I went home and cried for an hour.” “It was hurting and I began to think about what I had achieved in my life. My parents had done so much for me. sacrificed so much. They had relocated cities just so that I could play well. I was 22-23 and I had nothing to show for it. At the time I got that reality check, I felt miserable…But that was the best thing that could have happened to me. After that things turned around for me within a couple of years.

Gianluigi Buffon hit with UEFA charge after rant at referee Jaipur : Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was charged with violating UEFA’s code of conduct on Friday for comments he made about referee Michael Oliver following his team’s Champions League quarterfinal defeat by Real Madrid last month. The Juve captain was

enraged by Oliver’s decision to award Real a decisive stoppagetime penalty during the secondleg tie at the Bernabeu and lost control, screaming at and jostling the English referee until he was shown a red card. Forward Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to convert the penalty and send

Real through to the semi-finals 4-3 on aggregate. Buffon, 40, criticised Oliver after the match, saying the referee had been out of his depth, should have been in the stands eating crisps and must have had a garbage bin for a heart. UEFA said in a statement on its website http://www.uefa.

com/insideuefa/disciplinary that Buffon had been charged both for receiving a direct red card and with violating the governing body’s “general principles of conduct”. The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 31.

Gold eases on firmer dollar, eyes first weekly gain in four

Bengaluru: Gold prices slipped in range-bound trading on Friday as the dollar firmed slightly, with investors mostly brushing off a potential broadening of conflict in the Middle East. Spot gold was down 0.1 per cent at USD 1,319.61 per ounce as of 0656 GMT, after rising to the highest since endApril at USD 1,322.76 in the previous session. The metal was, however, still on track to register a first weekly rise in four. US gold futures for June delivery were nearly 0.2 percent lower at USD 1,320.20 per ounce. “I think geopolitical concerns (with respect to recent attacks on Syria) are still a concern but investors aren’t paying significant attention to these,” said Naeem Aslam, chief markets analyst, Think Markets. “The dollar story is more prominent.” Israel said

it attacked nearly all of Iran’s military infrastructure in Syria on Thursday, after Iranian forces fired rockets at Israeliheld territory for the first time in the most extensive military exchange ever between the two adversaries. Gold is traditionally seen as a safe place to park assets in times of uncertainty or conflict. Meanwhile, the dollar index on Friday edged slightly higher, but still held below a 4-1/2-month high hit on Wednesday, with

tepid US inflation data for April prompting traders to pare bets of faster rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. Fed funds futures, however, rose on Thursday, indicating some traders continued to expect the US central bank to raise key interest rates at its next policy meeting in June. A stronger dollar makes gold more expensive for holders of other currencies, while higher US rates tend to boost the greenback.
