Five years jail for Salman Khan Salman Khan found guilty in blackbuck poaching case. Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre acquitted in the case. The trial of the case has been in progress for the last 20 years

Jaipur: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan will spend his time in a barracks next to Asaram, the self-styled ‘godman’ facing trial in rape cases, in a jail in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur after he was found guilty in the two-decadeold blackbuck poaching case on Thursday, officials said. Khan was sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs 10, 000 after a local court in Jodhpur convicted him for the killing of two blackbucks, an endangered species of antelope, in Kankani village in October 1998. “We have made special security arrangements in the jail for Salman Khan,” superintendent of Jodhpur Central Jail Vikram Singh said. Singh said Khan, prisoner number 106, was lodged in “Ward Number 2”. “He was made to undergo medical tests and has no medical issues. He hasn’t made any demands.

Politically motivated steps, ‘mishandled events’ led to violence, suggests report by SC panel

We’ll give him jail uniform tomorrow (Friday),” he told said. Singh said the 52-year-old actor will be lodged in a barracks next

to Asaram’s in the security ward and will not share it with anyone. There are only two barracks in the security ward and each of them is occupied by prisoners, who need to be kept away from other prisoners. Asaram is in Jodhpur jail since August 3, 2013, after he was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old schoolgirl. Officials said Khan will be treated like any other prisoner and has to follow the

jail schedule. The Bajrangi Bhaijan actor will sleep on the floor and get a ceiling fan to beat the heat, they added. The maximum temperature in Jodhpur on Thursday was about 40 degrees Celsius. Superintendent Singh said prisoners get tea and breakfast in the morning in their barracks that is served between 9am and 10 am. They are locked in their wards between 11am and 3pm after which they are free to roam

Arun Jaitley suffering from kidney-related ailment

New Delhi : Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that he is suffering from kidney-related problems and other infections and is undergoing treatment. “I am being treated for kidney related problems & certain infections that I have contracted. I am therefore currently working from controlled environment at home. The future course of my treatment would be determined by the doctors treating me,” he tweeted. The 65-year-old politician was brought to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he underwent diagnostic tests. Doctors indicated that it was a kidney-related ailment. “Jaitley is likely to undergo kidney transplant and it is learnt that formalities for a donor kidney have been completed,” said. Depending on doctors’ advice, Jaitley may be admitted to the CardioNeuro Tower at AIIMS. Nephrologist Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo hospital, also brother of AIIMS director Randeep Guleria,

who is a family friend of Jaitley, is likely to operate him. Jaitley, however, has not yet been hospitalised but has been advised to avoid going out in public for fear of catching infection. He has not been attending office since Monday and even skipped taking oath after being re-elected as Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. 53 out of 58 newlyelected or re-elected members took oath of office during the last two days and Jaitley was one of the five members who have not taken oath. Sources said Jaitley’s present condition may be a fallout of the bariatric surgery he had undergone soon after the BJP government came to power at the Centre in 2014. He underwent the surgery to treat weight gain that he suffered because of a long-standing diabetic condition. It was first performed at Max Hospital, but he then had to be shifted to AIIMS because of complications. Though he has not been attending office since Monday.

around until 7pm. Dinner is also served in the barracks around this time, he added. Khan has already spent some time behind bars in Jodhpur since the three cases against him were registered in 1998 – two for poaching chinkaras or Indian gazelles and one for killing the blackbucks. The forest department arrested the actor in the blackbuck poaching case on October 12, 1998. He was in department’s custody for two days and sent to jail for four days from October 15 to October 17. The second time the actor went

to jail was in 2006 when he was convicted of killing a chinkara on September 28, 1998, at Ghora Farm near Mathania village. The court of chief judicial magistrate sentenced him to five years of imprisonment on April 10, 2006. Khan spent three days in the jail and was released on April 13 on bail. The third time Khan went behind bars was in 2007 when his appeal against the conviction was rejected by the session court on August 26. He was sent to jail and released on August 31 after he got bail from the high court.

month extension, citing the Assembly elections in Karnataka. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had asked both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to avoid a parochial outlook and

engage in a constructive dialogue with Centre. Despite this, both the states have been protesting over the issue that has been one of the factors disrupting the working of Rajya Sabha– the others being the Nirav Modi bank fraud, agrarian distress, the order on the SC/ST Act, the anti-draft bill, and special category status for Andhra Pradesh. With just two more days of the budget session to go, Cauvery water dispute is going to hold a lot of space with AIADMK and TDP members storming into the well of the house.

Cauvery water dispute: Protests affect normal life in Tamil Nadu, pro-Kannada outfits call for bandh in poll-bound Karnataka

Pune : The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), which conducted an independent probe into the Koregaon Bhima violence, has submitted its report to President Ram Nath Kovind and the Centre. Swaraj Vidwaan, a member of the 5th NCSC who acted as an observer while drafting the report, said their findings indicated that serious “mishandling” of events had led to violent clashes between Dalits and Marathas during the 200th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon. Vidwaan and other members of the NCSC, who were in Pune on Wednesday, didn’t divulge too many details about the report. “I will share details of the report at a later stage… it has been submitted to the President and the central government. What I can share, though, is that we found clear indications of politically motivated steps… people being forced to carry out certain anti-social activities. Many events were poorly handled and they snowballed later,” she said. Vidwaan had visited Pune in August last year, soon after

the 5th commission was constituted in July 2017, and lashed out at Pune Police over their alleged indifference towards hearing cases filed by members of Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The commission had heard a number of cases in which the SC or ST victims, who approached police to file cases, were allegedly tortured or ill-treated. The NCSC member had said in many cases, police would either deny to file an FIR, or delay it, once they learned that the victim belonged to a SC or ST community. One case involved Pune’s former Joint Commissioner of Police Sunil Ramanand, who had filed a case with the commission alleging ill treatment while working with city police. The commission, which found that Ramanand had to face “humiliation” during his stint, had taken up the issue on priority. Ramanand was later transferred as Special Inspector General, CID, Pune. On the progress in the case, Anuradha Dusane, assistant director, NCSC Maharashtra, said, “The matter is being heard… a committee, comprising members from the SC community.

New Delhi : Tamil Nadu on Thursday witnessed a bandh led by DMK and other opposition parties over Cauvery water dispute, a matter that has gained pitch in both the houses of Parliament. While DMK working President MK Stalin was at the forefront of protests in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, poll-bound Karnataka also called for a

state bandh on April 12. The two states have pitched up their battle over the watersharing issue, accusing Centre of delaying and not taking the Supreme Court’s order seriously. The top court had in February asked the Centre to resolve the water sharing dispute affecting south Indian states. The top court had, in its February 16 order, asked the Centre

to formulate a scheme for dividing the river’s waters among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. In February, the apex court had modified the 2007 verdict on the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) — an agency it had constituted in 1990 — and increased Karnataka’s share of Cauvery waters at the cost of Tamil Nadu. Uttar Pradesh: Scolded by Yogi Adityanath, Dalit MP complains to PM Modi Chhotelal, an MP from Robertsganj in Uttar Pradesh, said the apparent grudge was that a Dalit had been elected from a general seat

New Delhi : Chhotelal, a Dalit MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has complained to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying the latter scolded and shunted him out when he met him over a partyrelated problem. In a letter to Modi written last month, Chhotelal, an MP from Robertsganj in Uttar Pradesh, complained about a local party functionary helping the rival Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in a block-level election and undermining his efforts. He said attempts were being made to induct the BSP rival into the BJP. Chhotelal said the apparent grudge was that a Dalit had been elected from a general seat. He said he met

state BJP chief Mahendra Nath Pandey thrice “to save his dignity”. He also met state BJP General Secretary Sunil Bansal and other party functionaries, but there was no help. “So, I met the Chief Minister twice but did not get any help. I was scolded and shunted out,” Chhotelal said. The BJP MP also said he was threatened with a pistol by an opponent who used abusive, casteist

language against him, but the police did not register a case. “Tired over lack of response, I wrote to the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes,” he said. “I request you to protect the honour of Dalits and adivasis…,” he said in his letter to Modi. Chhotelal, a film artiste and Bhojpuri singer, also sought registration of a case against those who he claimed had attacked him.

BCCI media rights: Star India outbids Sony, Reliance Jio in record Rs 6138.1 crore deal

Mumbai : The BCCI sold the broadcast rights for India’s home games to Star India for a record total of Rs 6138.1 crore. Announcing the landmark deal on Twitter, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry congratulated Star India for emerging as the highest bidder in the e-auction. Star India had to cough up a staggering 59.31 per cent more than what it had paid for the rights in 2012. This takes the per match value

to Rs 60.1 crore for 102 international games across three formats of the game. It was previously Rs 43 crore per match between 2012-18. The BCCI, however, hasn’t officially announced which company landed the rights. In the e-auction that spanned for over three days, Sony Pictures Network India, Star India and Reliance were the three participants. Star India has successfully made the winning bid in the global consolidated rights category that includes the worldwide TV and digital rights. With the India home cricket rights, Star now has a virtual monopoly in the cricket broadcasting world

having bagged the IPL rights for a record Rs 16,347 crore (USD 2.55 billion) bid. They also own the rights for all ICC Tournaments (men’s and women’s 50-over World Cup, World T20). On Wednesday, the bids breached the Rs 6,000-crore mark amid intense bidding between Star India and Sony. The day ended with the highest bid touching Rs 6032.5 crore. The media rights were auctioned across three categories: the Indian television rights and rest of the world digital rights (GTVRD), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent alone (ID), and the global consolidated rights (GCR).

The NDA, the UPA, and two types of chicken

The exit of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has placed the spotlight on the inner dynamics of the NDA. The hard choices before each ally of the NDA can be modelled by the game of “chicken”. Think of the much reprised “chickie run” from the Hollywood classic Rebel Without A Cause. Jim (memorably played by James Dean) and Buzz are two leaders of high school gangs who dare each other to drive a car full tilt toward a cliff. The person who stops or exits the car first is chicken, and loses. If neither stops, both experience a terrible car crash. If both swerve, there is a status quo. The game of chicken is a collective action problem where the total surplus of a collective is maximized when a few members—the “chickens”—yield, while others remain unbending, and win. The winners enjoy the benefits generated by the chickens without incurring the costs. If all members play tough, then a very unpleasant outcome for everyone results— all members end up falling over the cliff. In the story of the chickie run, the aggressive player wins. But there is another version of the chicken story, referred to as “snowdrift”, where the player that is able to remain passive for the longest amount of time emerges victorious. In this story, a car gets stuck in a snowdrift. The driver and the fellow passenger both want the snowdrift to be removed. But each wants the other to do the work while they themselves remain in the comfort of the car. If both shovel, each will survive but both will have put in unnecessary labour. If neither shovels, both will freeze to death. The game between the constituents of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), including the Congress, exhibits the features of a chickie run while that between the members of the NDA, excluding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is like snowdrift. In the UPA, several constituents, both current and potential, are claiming their right to lead the coalition. The Trinamool Congress has trotted out a set of eligibility criteria for the leader of the opposition which sounds suspiciously like Mamata Banerjee’s resume. The Congress has declared it is the only party which can bring together the different groups within the country in amicable fashion. Thus, all contenders are going toe to toe, hoping the other will back down. In the absence of an agreement, each party runs the risk of total irrelevance. In the NDA, on the other hand, it is clear that the continued power of the BJP will rapidly erode the power of its allies. In fact, the BJP has been accused of actively triggering such possibilities by playing one regional party against another. Hence, the cumulative welfare of the allies of the BJP will be maximized if a few allies leave, while the others stay on in a weakened NDA, which still has a decent shot at coming to power in 2019. Who will leave and risk being left out in the cold, and who will stay to taste the sweet fruits of power? Both the chickie run and the snowdrift are identical from a mathematical point of view. But, practically speaking, they require different behaviours from the players. A player who is able to exhibit increasingly audacious activity, like Mamata Banerjee, is likely to triumph in the chickie run, while the player capable of remaining stubbornly inert, while continually issuing statements that provoke others to leave, like Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thakeray, will win in snowdrift. Both capabilities are unlikely to be found in the same player. In the chickie run of the UPA, there are as many equilibria in pure strategies as the number of claimants to the crown. In each equilibrium, one of the claimants stays adamant while others back down. In the snowdrift game of the - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara NDA,

Salman Khan gets Iulia Vantur on board for Race 3

Mumbai : Rumours of the alleged relationship between Salman Khan and Iulia Vantur never cease to stop. On the other hand, Iulia who is trying to find a foothold in Bollywood, has taken a keen interest in music. And with her new talent gaining prominence, now she has received an entry in the team of Race 3. How? Well, let us tell you. Do you remember the popularity that the Bipasha Basu and Akshaye Khanna song ‘Pehli Nazar’ from the film Race had gained? Courtesy, Atif Aslam! It seems that the makers of Race 3 now want to repeat the success of the chartbuster for this film too. So, Atif has crooned a

romantic track for this film and accompanying him was none other Iulia Vantur. We had spoken about this song earlier in a couple of reports. The team had shot for this song picturized on the lead pair Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez in Dubai. If reports are to be believed, it was Salman who suggested that his ‘good friend’ Iulia be taken on board for this romantic duet. Reportedly, Atif Aslam had already recorded his part in Dubai. However, Iulia Vantur is said to have recorded her version in India at a Mumbai studio recently. We had, in the past, also mentioned that Salman Khan turned lyricist for this film. The actor had written a song and had sung it for the Race 3 team.

Chanu started off on a rousing note by breaking the existing Games record with a lift of 80 kg. SPORTS ROUNDUP

IPL 2018, Team Profiles, Rajasthan Royals: A Blend Of Experience And Talent Make RR A Potent Force

GNS Ag / New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals (RR), the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise making a comeback to the league after a gap of two years, were dealt a blow when their captain-elect Steve Smith was banned for a year by Cricket Australia for his involvement in the latest ball-tampering saga to hit the sport. The team that is based out of Jaipur, Rajasthan, regrouped in their moment of crisis and passed the baton to their experienced campaigner Ajinkya Rahane, while South Africa's Heinrich Klassen replaced Smith in the team. Founded at the inception of the league, RR have the distinction of being the inaugural champions of the league when it was led by the mercurial

Shane Warne in 2008. They were also the runners-up of the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid. However, the team was banned from the league in 2015 after they were convicted of matchfixing by Lodha Panel, which was a panel appointed by India's Supreme Court. The re-emerging team made some extravagant buys in 2018 IPL auction as they bagged Ben Stokes for a whopping Rs. 12.5 crore, making him the costliest player at the auctions. They also bid Rs.11.5 crores for Jaydev Unadkat, making him the most expensive Indian player. The Royals have always been hailed for backing young, obscure players and giving them a platform to express

themselves. The legendary Australian spinner Warne returns to the team this season as a mentor and he promises to hand the Royals a muchneeded boost before and during the season. Ahmedabad: CEAT Ltd – India’s leading tyre manufacturer recently launcheda new campaignfor its flagship tyre Milaze X3. The ad aimsin communicating the benefits of Milaze X3’s longevity that allows consumers to focus on otherupgrades for their cars. The Milaze X3 tyres are designed to be highly fuel efficient and durable giving up to 1 Lakh KM when tested under standard test condition Basis insights, the campaign depicts a few real-life situationswherein consumers can opt for their favourite upgrades for their cars. This could be about making those perfect cosmetic changes such as stickers, flags, car paints, upgrading their vehicle

headlamps, seat covers or even a mini fridge. Tyres which are a vital requirement for a safer and comfortable drive is always last are the shopping list. However with the Milaze X3 car owners can now be assured of not replacing them for a long while. Mr Nitish Bajaj – Vice President – Marketing, CEAT Ltd said, “Our Milaze X3 brand campaign has been created to generate consumer awareness and promote the benefits of a tyre that Lasts 1,00,000 km and beyond. This campaign has been conceptualized basis consumer insights that consumers want to accessorise / personalize their vehicles but seldom do they think about the tyres and hence CEAT

created the Milaze X3 tyre which significantly delays the need for a tyre replacement owing to its new generation tread compound and CEAT’s cutting edge technology making it a hassle free and a long term purchase for their foreseeable future.” According to Mr. Kiran Anthony, ECD, Ogilvy and Mather, “It's a joy when a brand allows you to break the category codes, and I congratulate our partners at CEAT for doing that. For the first time, on mainstream television advertising, CEAT is not showcasing a tyre in action. It is an exception that mirrors the product promise of 1,00,000 km which is extraordinary in itself. For the agency as well as the brand, every campaign

is akin to laying a brick in our brand personality. With MILAZE-X3, it was easy to fall in the trap of being clever; to exaggerate, to play on long-life, to go gimmicky. In fact, it is a bigger challenge to be relevant, and be insightful. We're glad we found a good insight, and stayed true to our brand personality, which is always set in a human truth.” Milaze X3 tyres have a new generation tread compound that brings in optimised shoulder depth as well as rigid shoulder blocks. These together give the tyre a longer life. The higher groove depth of tyres also provides high resistance. Tyres also ensure superior load distribution that offers improved riding comfort for safer and pleasant travel.

If paired with a nice linen shirt that I usually prefer to wear off the field it just adds that simple style and sophistication one needs. Whether you decide to wear a suit or an Indian outfit, it’s always effortless fashion with Platinum.”Said Zaheer Khan about his top platinum picks. “We are delighted to
