The Surf Debuts As Hollywood Beach’s Newest Boutique Hotel
The Surf, located at 2307 North Surf Road on Hollywood Beach’s Broadwalk, has officially debuted as the area’s newest beachfront boutique hotel. What was once the Surf Terrace Apartments has been gutted, renovated, and repurposed as a luxury hotel catering to longer termstays.
The owner of the property, Joseph Partipilo, had been vacationing to Hollywood Beach since he was a youngster in the 1970’s and had a vision to restore this property to the retro chic design-style he remembered
as a child. “As a child, I remember the awe I had when I first saw the white sand beaches and aqua blue ocean. All the hotels in the area, while less than we have now, had this great architecture and vibe about them. When I decided to buy The Surf, I made very conscious decisions to maintain that design aesthetic and keep the retroness and beach feel both inside andout,”Partipilocommented.
Luxury amenities abound at The Surf. From the Omaha mattresses, Brooklinen sheets and Waterworks fixtures, The Surf focused on providing the same creature comforts you’d find at home and then some. Trustus, ifyoustayatTheSurf,it will be the best night’s sleep

Damar Hamlin Matters to You
Is Sudden Death Occurring More Commonly
By Jane M. Orient, M.D.
Millions of people saw Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapse on the football field on January 2. He was tackled, fell down, and at first stood up. Even to aficionados of the game, this looked no different from what usually happens throughout the game. But then his heart stopped, andhecollapsed.
There is an outpouring of sympathyforthisyoungmanand his family, suddenly struck by a terrible tragedy. And also a flood of social media posts from both sides of the political narrative: it must have been the COVID shot, orthe“safeandeffective”COVID shothadnothingtodowithit.
People are learning from wellpolished presentations about commotio cordis, an extremely rare event. A sudden impact to the chest throws the heart into a fatal rhythm disturbance. Classically, it occurs in young boys not wearing protective gear who get hit in the chest with a baseball or similar projectile traveling around 40 mph—not in older, well-protected football players. Still, Hamlin did get hit in thechest.
By now, people have noticed that a lot of athletes have been collapsing on the field, and a high percentage of them die. Many are not even engaged in contact sports. Sudden death when engaged in strenuous activity that triggers a surge of adrenalin is not new. Certain congenital heart conditions, such as hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, predispose to it, and aspiring athletes should be carefully screened for this. There are also several possibilities for which screening is not ordinarily
done.
Is sudden death occurring more commonly, or is it just gettingmoreattention?
One may also ask whether it is more common in persons who have had COVID shots. This is extremely hard to answer when almost all have gotten the shot because they are not allowed to play if they haven’t. Strenuous exertion in persons who get the shot or the placebo was not part oftheclinicaltrials.
Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart) has been recognized as an adverse side effect. It is said to be “rare and mild.” We do not know how many asymptomatic cases might be causing scarring in the heart that might predispose to rhythm problems—wedon’tscreenforit.
While people are genuinely sympathetic to Hamlin, they are also probably asking: what about
me, or my husband, son, or brother? Or the NFL might be wondering what about the future of football? Or of the organizations that have mandated the shots? Are they protected from liability, as the manufacturers are? Under federal law, the shots are supposed to be voluntary, with informed consent about possibleadverseeffects.
And what should we do now? Hamlin’s family deserves a diagnosis. Everybody wishes him full recovery, but if he tragically dies, he should have a forensic autopsy, looking for inflammation in the heart muscle and preserving tissue for tests such as immunohistologic staining that mightbecomeavailablelater.
What about the other players? There should be automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) immediately available on the field. If we were
serious about avoiding future tragedies in case the COVID shots just might play a role, one might consider the following:
• Suspend further injections until damage from the shots can be ruled out (some countries such as Denmark do not recommend compulsory shots in young men).
• Sideline players for two weeks if they do get an injection.
• Perform cardiac MRIs looking for scars in all players.
• Demand a study that screens a large population of vaccine recipients with cardiac enzymes (troponins), ultrasound, and MRI to check for inflammation.
Which, after all, is more important: the hearts of our people, or the profits of the vaccine
purveyors? Instead of guessing, or siding with one narrative or the other, let’s get an answer to the question with objective study, using our most sophisticateddiagnostictools.

Editors Note: Damar Hamlin was released from the hospital and returned to Bills facility, his return to the team facility is certainly a good sign but his future is still unknown. Due to what happened to Damar on January 2 people around the country people are signing up for CPR and AED training to learn how they can respond in an emergency.
More Of The Same? What To Expect From The Government
By John & Nisha Whitehead
For those wondering what to expect from the government in 2023, it looks like we’re going to be in for more of the same in terms of the government’s brand of madness, mayhem, corruption andbrutality.
Digital prisons. Unceasingly, thegovernmentanditscorporate partners are pushing for a national digital ID system. Eventually, a digital ID will be required to gain access to all aspects of life: government, work, travel, healthcare, financial services, shopping, etc.
Precrime. Under the pretext of helping overwhelmed government agencies work more efficiently, AI predictive and surveillance technologies are being used to classify, segregate and flag the populace with little concern for privacy rights or due process. All of this sorting, sifting and calculating is being done swiftly, secretly and incessantly with the help of AI technology and a surveillance state that monitors your every move. AI predictive tools are being deployed in almost every area of life.
Mandatory quarantines. Building on precedents established during the COVID-19 Pandemic, government agents may be empowered to indefinitelydetainanyonetheysuspect of posing a medical risk to others without providing an explanation, subject them to medical tests without their consent, carry out such detentions and quarantines without any kind of due process orjudicialreview.
Mental health assessments by non-medical personnel. As a result of a nationwide push to train a broad spectrum of socalled gatekeepers in mental health first-aid training, more Americans are going to run the risk of being reported by nonmedical personnel and detained forhavingmentalhealthissues.
Tracking chips for citizens. Momentum is building for corporations and the government alike to be able to track the populace, whether through the use of RFID Chips embedded in a national ID Card, microscopic chips embedded in one’s skin or tagsinretailproducts.
Military involvement domestically. The future, according to a Pentagon training video, will be militaristic, dystopian and far from friendly to freedom. Indeed, all signs point to the battlefield of the future being the American homefront. Anticipating this, the government plans to have the military work in conjunction with local police to quell civil unrest domestically.
Government censorship of anything it classifies as disinformation. In the government’s ongoing assault on those who criticize the government— whether that criticism manifests itself in word, deed or thought— government and corporate censors claiming to protect us from dangerous, disinformation campaigns are, in fact, laying the groundwork now to preempt any “dangerous” ideas that might challenge the power elite’s strangleholdoverourlives.
Threat assessments. The government has a growing list— shared with fusion centers and law enforcement agencies—of ideologies, behaviors, affiliations and other characteristics that could flag someone as suspicious and result in their being
War on cash. The government and its corporate partners are engaged in a concerted campaign to shift consumers towards a digital mode of commerce that can easily be monitored, tracked, tabulated, mined for data, hacked, hijacked and confiscated when convenient. This push for a digital currency dovetails with the government’s war oncash.
Expansive surveillance. AI surveillance harnesses the power of artificial intelligence and widespread surveillance technology to do what the police state lacks the manpower and resources to do efficiently or effectively: be everywhere, watch everyone and everything, monitor, identify, catalog, cross-check, crossreference and collude. With every new AI surveillance technology that is adopted and deployed without any regard for privacy, Fourth Amendment rights and due process, the rights of the citizenry are being marginalized, underminedandeviscerated.
False flags and terrorist attacks. Almost every tyranny being perpetrated by the U.S. Government against the citizenry—purportedly to keep us safe and the nation secure—has come about as a result of some threat manufactured in one way or another by our own government.
Endless wars to keep America’s military’s empire employed. The military and security industrial complexes that have advocated that the U.S. remain at war, year after year, are the very entities that will continue to profit the most from America’s expandingmilitaryempireabroad andhereathome.
Overcriminalization. The government has increasingly adopted the authoritarian notion that it knows best and therefore must control, regulate and dic-
tate almost everything about the citizenry’s public, private and professionallives.
Strip searches and the denigration of bodily integrity. Court rulings undermining the Fourth Amendment and justifying invasive strip searches have left us powerless against police empowered to forcefully draw our blood, forcibly take our DNA, strip search us and probe us intimately.
Censorship. First Amendment activities are being pummeled, punched, kicked, choked, chained and generally gagged all across the country. Free speech zones, bubble zones, trespass zones, anti-bullying legislation, zero tolerance policies, hate crime laws and a host of other legalistic maladies dreamed up by politicians and prosecutors have conspired to corrode our corefreedoms.
Taxation Without Any Real Representation. As a Princeton University survey indicates, our elected officials, especially those in the nation’s capital, represent the interests of the rich and powerful rather than the average citizen. We are no longer a representative republic. Never before have average Americans had so little say in the workings of their government and even less access to their so-called representatives.
Year after year, the government remains the greatest threat to our freedoms and yet year after year, “we the people” allow ourselves to be suckered into believing that politics will fix what’swrongwiththecountry.
Indeed, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, this is the very definitionofinsanity.

labeled potential enemies of the state. Before long, every household in America will be flagged as a threat and assigned a threat score.
Militarized police. Having transformed local law enforcement into extensions of the military, the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and the FBI are moving into the next phase of the transformation, turning the nation’s police officers into techno-warriors.
The government has increasingly adopted the authoritarian notion that it knows best and therefore must control, regulate and dictate almost everything about the citizenry’s public, private and professional lives

Water, Wastewater And Stormwater
Hallandale Beach Needs Over $230 Million Dollars For Its Projects
By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper
Over the past few articles, I have been updating our residents on our Infrastructure Projects. In all there is a current need of over $230 Million Dollars in projects that must be completed to secure our Water, Wastewater and Stormwater needs. These projects will span over many years and will be funded from Revenue Bonds, GO Bonds and other Funds secured through Government Grants. $181 Million Dollars in costs are planned to be paid for by Revenue Bonds and the rest will come to voters in the form of a GO Bond. It needs to be noted that the cost of construction has increased so these projections will vary depending on future costincreasesordecreases.
At the last meeting, we adopted a Budget Amendment to authorize moving forward with $53 Million Dollars in Revenue Bonds to pay for the repair and replacement of many of our Lift Stations, Underground Water Pipes and expanded Water Resources. The planned projects will be spread over different areas depending on the critical needandage.
Over the past year, we have adopted these projects into our 5-year Capital Improvement Plan and have adopted rate increases. Rate increases will also be phased in over the years as projects come online. This coming year we have authorized an additional rate study to fine tune the process. Our Finance Staff has been working alongside a consultant that specializes in this type of borrowing. In March we will be receiving the updated study.
I understand that many resi-
dents, in particular our condominium owners, are going through their own 40 and 50 Year Inspections. Our process is similar in that these projects are not wanted, they are needed. Like many condos, the previous Commission kicked the can down the road. For five years, due to changes in management and Commissions, many projects sat on the shelf. We sympathize with struggling residents but like Assessments these rate increases are a requirement to fix theCity.
Last year we received the great news that as part of helping communities in South Florida the Governor authorized Direct Grants to a handful of communities that had projects ready to do. Hallandale Beach received over $15 Million Dollars towards our Lift Stations. These types of Grants do help but will not pay for all our needs. We continue to apply for every Grant possible andeveryFederalProgram.
Dr. Jeremy Earle our City Manager has put together an amazing group of professionals who have worked righting many wrongs of the past. Thankfully we have a great Commission which I would like to say is shenanigan FREE and laser focused on makingsureweprovideoversight and direction to keep our Citymovingforward.
Last meeting, we also kept a promise to our residents to evaluate our on street parking program. This project was controversial during the last Election. We know that anything new and especially with a price tag will not be a fan favorite. We actually discussed and worked on the program many times before it was approved unanimously last
year. Since then the program has been successful in addressing many parking complaints that we heardaboutinthepast.
We stopped the storage of resident’s vehicles, over parking of vacation rentals, trailer storage, commercial vehicle storage, many of which were not even from our City. These changes freed up spots for our residents. The program does have various rates for Residential and Nonresidential Parking depending on the location. A monthly passruns$30Dollarsaday.
There were some false statements made during the Election that need to be addressed. The first was that there is paid parking at our parks. This is not true. There is paid parking on the City streets around some of our parks. Parks that have parking lots are open and FREE. We charge for on street around the parks to address the same problems we have had around the City. Also we are not the only city that has parking programs. Many cities including Hollywood, Pompano Wilton Manors and Daniaallhaveprograms.
One area that I and some of my colleagues were concerned about was for home service providers particularly nurses and care providers having to pay Visitor Rates. The new proposals would provide for a Discount Rate for what will be called Workforce Pass. It will allow for businesses needing to park for employees and service providers. We will also be working with developers and their tradesmen to provide parking arrangements. This will stop swale storage and other issues created during construction. We are also changing Beach Parking to Flat Rate
Avant Garde Safe Route to School Sidewalk Improvement Program Underway in Hollywood
As part of the Safe Route to School Grant Program, the Federal Highway Administration through the Florida Department of Transportation is funding approximately $765,407 of sidewalk improvements in Hollywood’s North Central neighborhood. The scope of the project includes adding 13,225 linear feet of new 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalks to fill in missing links along 26 different blocks that serve Oakridge Elementary School, Beachside Montessori Village, the Avant Garde Aca-
demy and Dowdy Field in Hollywood.
Sidewalks are being constructed on one side of these neighborhood streets in the following locations:
• Wilson Street: North side of the street from North 26th Avenue to Dixie Highway
• North 25th Avenue: West side of the street from Arthur Street to the alley between Arthur Street and Cleveland Street, and the east side from that point north to Wilson Street

Sidewalks will be constructed along the property line. Property owners adjacent to the new sidewalk locations are asked to remove all personal private property, including plants, walls, pavers or other structures that could be in conflict with the new sidewalk path. added, “each room was designed to encourage families to spread out, relax and unwind, while also providing separation andprivacywhenit’sbedtime.”
Another advantage to The Surf is the full-size kitchens in nearly every suite. We’re not talking just a mini fridge and microwave here. Each kitchen has all the appliances and accessories to cook a gourmet meal and showcase your inner Julia Child. Partipilo commented on the thought process behind this unique hotel concept by stating, “we wanted to appeal to guests who plan to stay for several weeks at a time or the full season by providing them the space and ability to shop for a week’s worth of groceries, cook their own meals and settle into their new home. No one can, or wants, to eat out every night, so it was important for us to provide the most comfortable setting, just like home, except we can offer a white sand beach and ocean as your new backyard.”
Mr. Partipilo has thought through every detail when it comes to entertaining, even offering a huge patio and barbeque grill to enjoy adrinkoramealwhileyouwatch thesunset.
For those with a flair for adventure, you couldn’t ask for a better location than The Surf. Located right on Hollywood Beach’s famous Broadwalk, you won’t be lacking for things to do with this ideal location. You can walk the Broadwalk and find dozens of bars, restaurants, and shops to pass the time. Guests can also access the Hollywood Beach shuttle for just $1 and traverse to even more entertainment and adventure with easy hop-on and hop-off serviceanywhereacrosstown.
The laid-back vibe at The Surf is by design and was carefully planned out to make guests feel that they’re in their own private retreat without the constant monitoring of an overbearing staff. The hotel offers a contactless check-in and checkout process by providing each guest with a special digital access code prior to arrival, enabling guests to arrive and depart at their convenience. While there is not a dedicated staff on site, guests can communicate any questions, special requests or needs via a text messaging app that is monitored 24/7. It’s the whiteglove concierge service for the 21stcentury.
While The Surf is a 5-star luxury boutique hotel, it offers many affordable rate plans, including deeper discounts for stays lasting a week, a month, or an entire season. Guests are encouraged to book direct at: www.thesurfhollywoodbeach.com where they will receive a 20% direct book discount for all stays. “Our mission has always been to offer the best discounts when guests book directly with us. This way guests don’t have to pay excessive processing fees and
service charges like they do when booking on: Expedia.com orBooking.com,”Partipilonoted.
The Surf is very easy to find and has something truly creative that allows this hotel to stand out from the rest. A thirty-five-foot flamingo. Curated by renowned artist, Nathaly Diaz, the flamingo mural was spray painted over an arduous 5-day period. Perched atop a wrought iron scaffold, Nathaly poured her literal blood,
sweat and tears into the project. Partipilo discussed how lucky he was to have Nathaly as the resident artist, “I’ve known about Nathaly for years and love her work. It’s creative, fun and ties in seamlessly with the surroundings of the structures she uses for her canvas. We absolutely love the finished product and hope visitors, and guests alike can enjoy the flamingo.” For those curious about Nathaly’s work, we
encourage you to follow her on Instagram at: @nvt.art or: www.nvtart.com.
We commend Mr. Partipilo, who is now a full-time resident of Hollywood Beach, for his work and dedication to owning a local business in the community. We asked Mr. Partipilo, who has developed two other high-end hotel properties in Downtown Milwaukee, if this would be his last hotel project. “it’s hard to
say if this will be it. I’ve enjoyed the challenge and rewards with every project we’ve done, and truly believe we’ve added value to each community. I love that what we’ve created in the hotel space is different, special and unlike anything else in the market. That’s enough for me… fornow.”
We strongly encourage you to stay at The Surf, it’s worth the trip.

Cruising is Back in a Big Way
After nearly three years of challenges and uncertainty, cruise lines are gearing up for a strong year with travel demand rising and Americans eager to set sail. A new AAA survey finds 52% of U.S. adults are just as likely or more likely to consider taking a cruise vacation than they were before the pandemic. That number is up from 45% one yearago.
“Cruising is back in a big way. We expect a lot more people to book cruises in 2023 as several new ships have entered the market,” says Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We already saw this in November which proved to be a record-breaking month for cruise bookings. For many cruise companies, Black Friday was the single largest bookingdayinhistory.”
Types of Cruises Most Travelers
Want to Take in 2023
Contemporary, family-friendly, and luxury cruises top the list of most popular ships among people who are likely to go on a cruise this year, according to AAA’s survey. But smaller, more intimate ships are gaining popularity, like river cruises which offer personalized itineraries and port-centricexperiences.
Some of the top reasons keeping some people from cruising are cost and health and
safety concerns. Haas says, “Cruising offers tremendous value versus other vacation options. Our Travel Agents are skilled at helping travelers identify the itinerary that fits your interestsandbudget.”
“Increasingly, there is something for everyone in cruise vacation options. Families, couples and friends looking to reconnect are finding that cruising offers outstanding experiences and value,” adds Haas. “Cruise lines have undertaken extensive measures to promote health and safety onboard, so you can expect attention to detail and cleanliness. In the case of unexpected illness, they have protocols in place to isolate passengersastheyrecuperate.”
Some of the most popular cruise destinations for 2023 are: Alaska, California, Barcelona, Spain, Hawaii, Mexico, Venice, Italy, Paris, France, Bermuda, Canadaamongothers.
5 Mistakes People Make When Booking Cruises
Forgoing a travel agent and travel insurance. Travel agents are experts who can help you select the cruise line, ship, and itinerary that best fit your lifestyle, budget, and interests. They have access to the same pricing as booking through a cruise line directly and can provide additional savings, onboard credit,
complimentary gratuities, and other amenities you won’t get from booking on your own. Travel insurance gives you peace of mind for many unexpected situations. Without it, you could be on the hook for 100% of your trip if you must cancel unexpectedly. Insuring your trip allows you to breathe a little easier, knowing your travel investment is protected.
Delaying booking in hopes of getting a deal. Think you’ll get a better deal at the last minute? Think again! Cruises can be booked as far as two years in advance. Waiting too long can result in the cruise or stateroom category you want being sold out. With lower stateroom inventory as the sailing date approaches, many cruise lines increase prices as the sailing date gets closer. So, it’s best to book early to get the specific cruiseandstateroomyouwant.
Waiting to book shore excursions or onboard dining and shows. Putting off booking a shore excursion is risky because the most popular tours may be sold out by the time you’re on board. The same goes for certain restaurants or shows. Often, cruise lines will offer lower prices for shore excursions booked in advance. That’s another way travel agents can help. They can guide you through the pre-cruise process and assist with those typesofreservations.
Flying in on the day of sailing. Weather delays or mechanical
issues can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare if you are flying in on the day you are sailing. The stress of possibly missing your cruise is not the way to start a relaxing trip. AAA recommends flying in a day early and enjoying an evening at your port of embarkation before settingsail.
Picking a cruise based solely on price. There are cruise lines for all types of budgets. Travel agents can be invaluable in this area because they can match your interests with your budget while laying out exactly what experiences and service you can expectatdifferentpricepoints.
5 Biggest Myths about Cruising
I will be bored. A cruise can be as active or as relaxing as you want it to be. From basketball and pickleball to rock climbing walls and surfing simulators, large ships have amenities galore. At night, end your day with Broadway-style shows, solo acts, movies, casinos, or nightclubs. Expedition cruises are all about the destination and focus on the great outdoors. For travelers looking to take in the sights and sounds of a breathtaking city, European river cruises, for example, offer activities and excursions that immerse passengersinthelocalculture.
I will get seasick. Cruise ships have stabilizers to minimize the ship’s motion as much as possible. If you’re taking a river cruise, you’re less likely to get
motion sick due to minimal waves. But travelers who are extra sensitive can take medications like Dramamine, use acupressure bracelets, or wear seasicknesspatchesbehindtheear.
I will have to wear formal clothes. The days of wearing a tuxedo or cocktail dress in the evening are over unless you want to go all out! Most cruise lines have adopted a resort casual dress code. Depending on your mood, you can opt for a more relaxed look or put on something specialforaromanticnightout.
The only activities on a cruise are eating and drinking. It’s no secret that cruises are known for a wide range of cuisine, room service, all-day pizza bars, and burgers by the pool. But there are plenty of other things to do, like hanging out at the pool, going on offshore excursions, watching live entertainment, taking a fitness class, or treating yourselftoaspaservice.
Cruise ships are only for older crowds. Today’s cruises are popular with people of all ages and offer a fantastic vacation for families, groups of friends, and honeymooners. Kids have their own dedicated space and activities to keep them entertained, while young adults can take advantage of endless sports and activities onboard. Adults can enjoy a wine tasting or spa treatment, and all ships offer quiet corners for reading, relaxing, and evennapping.
