The Florida Lottery is celebrating a record-breaking week of sales following the recent $1.787 Billion Powerball® Jackpot, which ranked as the second largest in Powerball history and the second largest U.S. Lottery Jackpot ever won. Two jackpot-winning tickets, sold in Missouri and Texas, split the historic prize. Each ticket holder had the option of receiving an annuitized prize of $893.5 Million or a lump-sum cash payment of $410.3 Million.
Florida players joined in the excitement with millions of winning tickets sold across the state, including 123 prizes worth $50,000 or more, of which five were $1 million wins. Beyond sales, the excitement also carried over online, driving historic engagement across the Lottery’s digital platforms during the jackpot run.
“Floridians showed incredible enthusiasm throughout this jackpot run, and that excitement translated into a meaningful impact for education,” said Florida Lottery Secretary John F. Davis. “Every ticket purchased during this historic cycle not only gave players a chance to win, but also helped fund opportunities for students across our state.”

Since joining Powerball in 2009, Florida has celebrated more jackpot winners than any other state, while the game itself has generated more than $3.16 Billion for education in Florida.

They said it was for
They said it was for order.
They said it was for the good of the nation.
They always say it’s for something good… until it isn’t.
Nearly a quarter-century after 9/11, we are still living with the consequences of fear-driven government power grabs. What began as “temporary” measures for our security have hardened into a permanent architecture of control.
The bipartisan police-state architecture that began with 9/11 has been passed from president to president and party to party, each recycling the same justifications—safety, security, patriotism—to expand its powers at the expense of the citizenry.
So they locked down the country “for our safety.”
They expanded surveillance “for our security.”
They rounded up anyone who challenged the narrative “for the common good.”
They erased names, ideas, and histories “to prevent offense.”
They forced schools to teach only what was politically correct “for the children.”
They censored speech “for our protection.” They targeted dissenters “to preserve peace.”
They militarized the streets and called it “law and order.”
These very abuses—once denounced when carried out by the Left—are now cheered, defended, and excused when carried out by the Right.
People who once spoke passionately about truth, freedom, and faith have now fallen silent in the face of injustice, or worse, convinced themselves that nothing is wrong. The very voices that should be warning against tyranny are instead excusing it or looking away.
This is the danger of double standards in politics: every tyranny is rationalized in the moment by its chorus of defenders.
But history teaches that what goes around comes around. If you justify it now, you’ll have no defense when the tables turn.
And yet, time and again, the lies we tell ourselves make it possible. The cult of personality. The blind loyalty to party. The belief that “our side” can’t be the villain.
It never ceases to amaze how far people will go to excuse the actions of their favorite tyrant, even when those actions are the very things they once swore to oppose.
The pattern of justifying tyranny is as old as power itself. Every abuse comes wrapped in the same excuse: we had to do it.
After 9/11, Americans were told the
Patriot Act and mass surveillance were
“necessary to prevent terrorism.” The result was a sprawling security state that tracks every phone call, every online search, every purchase. The justification was security. The cost was freedom.
Under Obama, drone warfare and the prosecution of whistleblowers were defended as “keeping America safe.” The president even claimed the power to assassinate U.S. citizens abroad without trial. The result was an unaccountable government acting as judge, jury and executioner. The justification was safety. The cost was due process. see. The result was government claiming control over every aspect of daily life. The justification was saving lives. The cost was the right to govern our bodies.
nals.” Mental health round-ups of the homeless are justified as “helping the vulnerable.” Militarized patrols on city streets are justified as “cleaning up the streets.” Turning ICE into a roving army of lawless thugs is justified as “protecting citizenship.” Censorship and efforts to sanitize American history are now being lauded by the same voices that railed against “cancel culture.”
That same logic has taken a deadly turn abroad. At Trump’s direction, the U.S. carried out a series of preemptive military strikes this year—against Iran’s nuclear sites, against the Houthis in Yemen, and
Under Trump, the script is familiar.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns and mandates were imposed in the name of “public health,” laying the groundwork for a Nanny State empowered to micromanage every aspect of our liveswhere we go, what we buy, who we see.
What makes Trump and those who came before him especially dangerous is not merely their willingness to wield power but the eagerness of their enablers to excuse and defend it at every turn.
History shows that bullies and strongmen can only rise when mobs rally to their side. A tyrant’s greatest weapon is not his fist, but the crowd that cheers him on, intimidates his critics, and convinces itself that might makes right.
The machinery of authoritarianism always needs a chorus of defenders, and today that chorus is louder, more organized, and more dismissive of constitutional limits than ever before.
People imagine tyranny is only tyranny when the other side does it. When their side does it, they call it leadership. They call it patriotism. They call it protection. But the abuse doesn’t change when the party label does. Wrong is wrong.
Every new regime that seizes power promises it will use extraordinary authority only for good. And every regime—without exception—uses it to entrench itself at the expense of liberty.
Every generation tells itself the same lies to excuse the same abuses.
The double standard is breathtaking.
Tyranny doesn’t change depending on who carries it out. Yet partisans convince themselves it does. They say: It’s different this time. It’s necessary. It’s for us.
In truth, the only difference is who holds the whip.
You cannot defend freedom by defending tyranny when your side is in power. You cannot preserve liberty by cheering for its destruction. You cannot expect constitutional limits to shield you tomorrow if you discard them today.
If you want liberty, you must defend it consistently—even when it restrains your own party, your own leader, your own side. Especially then.
What you excuse today will be used against you tomorrow.
As I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, it does not matter whether the abuse comes draped in red or blue. It does not matter whether it is cheered by the Right or justified by the Left. Tyranny, once excused, becomes entrenched.
National Guard deployments in American cities are justified as “restoring order.” Sweeping surveillance is framed as “protecting communities.” Crackdowns on dissent are defended as “stopping crimi-
zation—as part of the president’s unilateral war-making authority.
This, too, is part of the bipartisan police-state architecture built after 9/11, when presidents claimed open-ended authority to wage preemptive war without meaningful congressional oversight.
As always, the justification is order, safety, and patriotism. The cost is truth, justice and freedom.

“Today’s MAHA Commission report is another historic milestone for our country and a testament to President Trump’s leadership and commitment to Make America Healthy Again,” said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins. “America’s farmers and ranchers are at the heart of the solution — alongside doctors, parents, and communities - to fight chronic disease and protect future generations. Under this Administration, we are not just talking about healthy outcomes; we are delivering them by securing voluntary commitments to remove artificial food dye from major brands, providing technical assistance to States interested in restricting junk food and soda from SNAP, and providing growers with new tools to maintain and improve soil health, including the introduction of a regenerative farming practice pilot program. Together with our partners at HHS and
strengthening the health of our families, and ensuring the United States leads the world with the safest, strongest, and most abundant food supply.”
Key Focus Areas of the Strategy:
Restoring Science & Research: Expanding NIH and agency research into chronic disease prevention, nutrition and metabolic health, food quality, environmental exposures, Autism, gut microbiome, precision agriculture, rural and tribal health, vaccine injury, and mental health.
Historic Executive Actions: Reforming dietary guidelines; defining ultraprocessed foods; improving food labeling; closing the GRAS loophole; raising infant formula standards; removing harmful chemicals from the food supply; increasing oversight and enforcement of directto-consumer prescription drug advertising laws; improving food served in schools, hospitals, and to veterans; and reforming Medicaid quality metrics to measure health outcomes.
Process Reform & Deregulation: Streamlining organic certification; easing barriers to farm-to-school programs and direct-to-consumer sales; restoring whole milk in schools; supporting mobile grocery
drug and device approval; and accelerating EPA approvals for innovative agricultural products.
Public Awareness & Education:
Launching school-based nutrition and fitness campaigns, Surgeon General initiatives on screen time, prioritizing pediatric mental health, and expanding access to reliable nutrition and health information for parents.
Private Sector Collaboration:
Promoting awareness of healthier meals at restaurants, soil health and land stewardship, and community-led initiatives, and scaling innovative solutions to address root causes of chronic disease.
With this strategy, the MAHA Commission leads the most ambitious national effort ever to confront childhood chronic disease and Make America Healthy Again.
“Protecting human health and the environment while powering America’s comeback isn’t just about serving Americans today; it’s about ensuring future generations inherit clean air, land, water, and the foundation for healthy lives,” EPA Administrator Zeldin said. “The Make America Healthy Again strategy outlines

“For too long health care has used a reactive approach to chronic diseases,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary said. “I am pleased to support the findings of the MAHA commission and to promote a more proactive approach, tackling root causes undermining the health and happiness of American children.”
“The MAHA Report provides a blueprint for the entire government to focus on solving the chronic disease crisis facing American children,” NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya said. “We must make America healthy again so our children live longer and healthier lives than we will.”
The recent MAHA Commission press event included: HHS Secretary Robert F. (BPT) - Children spend anywhere from 800 to 1,100 hours at school each year. For those with food allergies, that time comes with added risks. From cafeteria meals to classroom snacks, the risk of a food allergy exposure is an everyday concern.
And with good reason: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 13 children - roughly two per classroom - are affected by food allergies. Of those, 42% have experienced at least one severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. For children at risk, even a small exposure can be life-threatening.
The good news? With the right preparation, you can help your child manage food allergies with care and consistency. Discover how to educate, plan and confidently communicate with school staff and other parents to support your child throughout the school year.
Awareness and education are key
What is a food allergy? Simply put, it’s an allergic reaction that occurs after eating a food allergen. Your body’s immune system mistakenly responds to a certain
food as if it were a harmful germ, causing an allergic reaction. In children, the most common food allergies are to peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fin fish and shellfish.
A serious allergic reaction involves two or more body organs - the skin, lungs, stomach and/or heart. Symptoms may include:
• Hives on the skin, sometimes on several parts of the body
• Shortness of breath, wheezing, repetitive cough
• Tightness in the throat, hoarse, trouble swallowing
• Swelling of the tongue, lips or throat
• Stomach discomfort such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea or vomiting
• Blood pressure changes
• Pale, faint, dizzy, confused
Epinephrine is the only medication that can stop anaphylaxis. Administer it as soon as possible. Remember the rule: “Epinephrine First, Epinephrine Fast.”

Holy Cross Health has completed its first procedure with the latest generation of Inspire® therapy, the Inspire V System. Since establishing their Inspire therapy program in 2023, Holy Cross Health has impacted the lives of dozens of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) by helping them breathe easier and sleep better. Inspire therapy is an easy-to-use, mask-free1 solution for people with moderate to severe OSA who have tried and struggled with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines. It has a proven safety record with 99.6% of Inspire implant procedures successfully completed without any major complications.1 The implanted Inspire device syncs with a patient’s natural breathing pattern and works comfortably2 inside the body to keep the airway open while sleeping, successfully reducing the number of sleep apnea events each night by 79%.3. The Inspire V System is an innovative advancement in Inspire therapy, designed for a more simplified procedure. With a
new integrated respiratory sensor, the Inspire V System eliminates the need for physicians to place a separate sensing lead and instead allows for respiratory sensing to occur inside of the implant.
“We’re proud to have successfully performed the first Inspire V Procedure at Holy Cross Health,” said Sam Kosseifi, M.D., a Board-Certified Sleep Medicine Physician at Holy Cross Health. “Inspire therapy marks a major step forward in Sleep Apnea Treatment. It’s clinically proven to reduce Sleep Apnea events and is associated with high patient satisfaction and strong adherence to therapy.”
According to Inspire, 93% of patients who have received the implant would recommend it to a friend or family member who suffers from OSA. To learn more about Inspire therapy, visit: www.inspiresleep.com - Or: www.holycross.com/services/pulmonary-care/ inspire-therapy.

She has worked in the same building longer than many of her colleagues have been alive, but that doesn’t phase Laurie Maas. As the hit song from early in her career says, the longtime nurse just ‘keeps on truckin.’
Maas, Clinical Manager of the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital Pembroke, has been a nurse for more than 56 years and has provided care at the facility since 1975. It was then Pembroke Pines General Hospital and wouldn’t be acquired by Memorial Healthcare System for another 20 years.
“50 years at this location is a remarkable accomplishment, but, if you know Laurie, it’s not surprising,” said Felicia Turnley, CEO of Memorial Hospital Pembroke. “She has nursing in her DNA and has always embraced serving patients, families, and the local community.” Maas, a mother to eight children, graduated from the Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing in 1969, about the time men were first walking on the moon. Of the most recent 30 years with Memorial, she says its family friendliness to both patients and staff is what she values most. It’s a culture that Maas and her husband, Ed, a Former Healthcare CEO, contribute to each Thanksgiving by providing a holiday meal to ICU staff that have to work through the night. “Laurie loves her team, and they say she is the glue that holds things together,” said Ed Maas.
As far as the inevitable question about how long she plans to continue in the clinical manager’s role, Maas says she is blessed with good health and still enjoys working with patients and coworkers,

The way you treat others offers a window into the type of person you are. Your interaction with people, whose job it is to serve you, reflects on your character and offers a glimpse into the way they will react to you.
When you behave in a condescending manner, you are sure to elicit a negative reaction. Immediately, the person you are talking down to will be put off, even if they don’t show it. You will squelch any inclination for the other person to go out of their way to help you. At most, they will do no more than the bare minimum necessary to keep you mollified.
Corporate CEOs like to observe how job candidates treat waiters. These corporate captains have found that how a prospective employee treats a waiter offers a clear picture of the type of person he or she is. Someone who is polite to you but discourteous to a waiter does not have desirable interpersonal skills. They tend to be abrasive, causing friction among coworkers and subordinates. Your treatment of waiters isn’t just significant in business settings. A survey by a dating service discovered that being rude to waiters tops the list as the worst dining etiquette. It is a real turnoff to be in the company of someone who is mean spirited.
Anyone can treat a waiter well when there are no mishaps or mess-ups. The real indication of a person’s true nature is how they react when there are problems. What do they do when a waiter makes a mistake or their meal is not what they had hoped for? Do they get indignant, make a scene, and jump down the waiter’s throat? Or are they gracious and
No one likes to be berated when they make a mistake. Some waiters are better than others. Some are more conscientious. You can’t manage their behavior, but you do control yours. If you can’t handle a problem when you are eating out, how can you be depended on to handle life’s real predicaments?
People, who are rude to waiters, erroneously believe they are displaying power and authority. They mistakenly think their behavior will impress others. Anyone who attempts to elevate their status by stepping on others will ultimately fall flat on their face.
People with integrity and character treat everyone with courtesy and respect, regardless of their occupation, financial, or social status. They don’t view themselves as being above or below anyone else.
The way you treat people determines to a large part how they treat you. Not everyone will respond to kindness and consideration. But everyone will react negatively to berating. Your best bet for bringing out the best in people is to treat them with respect.
If you expect the worst from people, your attitude will project this and your low expectations will usually be met. If you anticipate the best, people tend to try to live up to those expectations so as not to disappoint you.
People crave approval and recognition. If you start out rejecting someone, they will feel there is no chance to please you and won’t even try. However, when you say please, thank you, and can you help me, others will make an extra effort to accommodate you.

Just like humans, pets experience Anxiety due to various triggers such as loud noises, changes in their environment or separation from their owners. Understanding the root cause of your pet’s Anxiety is the first step in coping. Common signs of Anxiety in pets include excessive barking, destructive behavior, pacing and restlessness - especially when experiencing separation or environmental stress. By recognizing these signs early, pet parents can take proactive steps - including these ideas from Oh Norman!, the pet wellness brand Co-founded by “Big Bang Theory” actress and animal advocate Kaley Cuoco - to help their furry friends overcome Anxiety and live calmer, happier lives.
Practice Desensitization Training
Desensitization training involves exposing your pet to Anxiety-inducing stimuli in a controlled (and gradual) manner. Start with short departures if your pet experiences separation Anxiety and gradually increase the length of time you’re away to help your pet become more comfortable being alone. Pairing these departures with positive reinforcement, like treats or favorite toys, can help create a positive association.
Harness the Power of Familiar Scents
In your absence, leaving behind a worn t-shirt or blanket that smells like you can be soothing for anxious pets. A familiar scent can provide a sense of security and reassurance, reducing anxiety levels.
Consider Science-Backed,
Vet Approved Supplements
For pets needing extra support, science-backed supplements like Oh Norman’s Calm the Eff Down! can help anxious pups. The all-natural daily supplement - developed with board-certified veterinary specialists - combats stress from separation, vet visits, travel and fireworks.
“I love seeing my dogs get super excited, but sometimes they need to effing chill,” Cuoco said. “Having a vetapproved natural supplement that calms stressed-out dogs gives me peace of mind. I only want to give my dogs something that is safe and effective, so Calm The Eff Down has been a game changer. I’m so proud of this product!”
In fact, the supplement has been
Unusually high tides, also called King Tides, are expected periodically through early December. These seasonal high tides occur when the moon’s proximity to Earth causes tides to rise higher than normal. Combined with rising sea levels and stormy weather, King Tides can significantly increase the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Rainfall, wind direction, and wind speed can all affect how high the tides come in, sometimes pushing water levels higher than predicted. With seven miles of shoreline, nearly eight miles of canals and a flat topography, Hollywood is particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and tidal flooding.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), above-average
High seasonal tides can flood coastal roads, parking lots and docks. Motorists should use caution, avoid driving through flooded streets and plan alternate routes when possible. During peak high tides, water levels may rise more than two and a half feet.
The City of Hollywood is actively working on both short- and long-term solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding. Flap gates have been installed in the stormwater system to block tidal water from flowing back through drains. Auxiliary pumps are also stationed in highrisk areas to help clear flooded streets as quickly as possible.
Make a Difference in Your Neighborhood Heavy rainstorms and King Tides
increase the chance of localized flooding. City crews work hard to maintain more than 157 miles of stormwater piping and nearly 4,900 catch basins, but residents can help too. By adopting a catch basin in your neighborhood, you can help keep debris out of the storm system and reduce flooding.
Participation is simple: sign up to adopt, inspect the basin at least once a month, clean it as needed and submit proof of your efforts. You can even earn rewards for helping to prevent flooding and waterway pollution.
Sign up today at: www.hollywoodfl.org/ adoptacatchbasin - You can also help by placing coconuts in your garbage cart for collection and disposing of lawn clippings and yard waste properly to keep them from entering storm drains.

alone. According to Pew Research, more than 44 million households in the U.S. were rented in 2024 - that’s more than one-third of all homes. And the number keeps growing.
With renting on the rise, it’s never been more important to think about protecting what’s inside your home. That’s where renters insurance comes in. Many people mistakenly believe their landlord’s insurance covers them, but that’s only true for the building - not your belongings.
Mercury Insurance wants renters to know they have options - and that coverage is often more affordable than people think. Renters insurance can help replace your things after theft, fire or other disasters, and even offer liability protection if someone gets hurt in your unit.
“Renters insurance can offer peace of mind when it comes to such things as protection of your personal property and finances,” said Adam Bakonis, Senior
Insurance. “Some consumers don’t think about renters insurance until they are in a situation in which they need it, so it pays to do some research prior to moving into a rental property so that you are prepared for the unexpected.”
Here are some of the benefits of having renters insurance:
• Protection of Personal Property: Renters insurance helps cover the cost of repairing or replacing your belongings - such as furniture, clothing and electronics - if they are damaged or stolen due to covered perils like fire, theft, vandalism and water damage from burst pipes. Your belongings can be covered even if the loss occurs outside your rental unit, such as in a storage unit or while traveling. You may have the option of choosing between replacement cost value (RCV) or actual cash value (ACV) coverage for your belongings. Replacement cost coverage is recommended since it will pay to repair or replace damaged items with items of a similar type and

Petty Officer 2nd Class Ajianah Broomes, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Naval Station Mayport.
Broomes graduated from Dillard High School in 2019.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Fort Lauderdale.
“I developed a strong work ethic through various jobs, which taught me the importance of professionalism, including maintaining my uniform and appearance,” Broomes said. “I made it a point to wake up each day looking and feeling my best.”
Broomes joined the Navy five years ago. Today, Broomes serves as a retail services specialist.
“My guidance counselor highly recommended I participate in the Junior ROTC program,” Broomes said. “I had no intentions of joining, but my good friend enlisted and influenced me to follow.” Since its commissioning in 1942, Naval Station Mayport has grown to become the third largest fleet concentration area in the United States. Boasting both a large harbor and an 8,000-foot runway capable of handling any military aircraft in use, Naval
Station Mayport is home to more than 80 commands, including 22 ships and three helicopter squadrons.
The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.
According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Broomes has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“My proudest accomplishment was being selected as Sailor of the Third Quarter and later as Sailor of the Year for fiscal year 2021,” Broomes said. “Now, as a supervisor, seeing the growth and success of the junior personnel I have mentored has been my greatest achievement.”
Broomes serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosper-
depreciation in the final payment amount.
• Additional Living Expenses (Loss of Use): If your rental property becomes uninhabitable due to a covered loss (like a fire or extensive damage), renters insurance can help cover the increased cost of temporary living expenses, such as hotel stays, meals and other related expenses to maintain your normal standard of living while your place is being repaired or rebuilt or until you permanently relocate.
• Medical Payments: Some policies include guest medical coverage, which can pay for reasonable medical expenses (like X-rays or ambulance rides) if a guest is injured at your rental, even if you are not at fault.
• Liability Protection: This coverage can protect you financially if someone is injured in your rental
child accidentally breaks a neighbor’s window, your renters insurance can help cover the costs of their medical bills or property damage, as well as legal fees if you are sued.
• Affordability: Renters insurance is generally inexpensive, with the average cost often being around $15 to $30 per month, depending on location and coverage limits. According to NerdWallet, the average cost of renters insurance in the U.S. is $148 per year, or about $12/mth.
• Pet Liability: If your pet causes damage or injury to another person or their property, renters insurance may help cover the costs. NOTE: While this falls under general liability coverage, it is relatively common for liability losses and merits a separate mention.
