Twice The Milestone: How Dual Education Is Empowering Students
(BPT) - High school graduation is a milestone worth celebrating - but for 73 students at DeVry University Advantage Academy (DUAA), this year’s ceremony marked two academic achievements. In addition to their high school diplomas, 38 students earned Associate Degrees in Information Technology and Networking and 35 earned Associate Degrees in Business Management - with the vast majority completing their degrees before turning 19.
“Graduating with both my High School Diploma and Associate Degree was a really big personal accomplishment,” said 2025 DUAA graduate Ben Bednar. “The work and greater expectations of our college classes pushed me to realize that I just enjoy learning and DeVry further refined my personal ambitions for the future.”
A dual path, a singular goal
Founded in 2004, DUAA helps qualifying 11th and 12th grade students from 48 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) earn college degrees alongside their diplomasall at no cost to families. Through a rigorous and accelerated model, students
split their day between CPS coursework and DeVry University classes, with all tuition, books and technology covered.
The results speak for themselves:
CPS’s Class of 2025, including the 73 DUAA graduates, alone earned more than 66,000 early college credits - the highest total in CPS history - with an estimated $10 Million in tuition savings for families.
Real-world readiness beyond the credit
While affordability is a major draw, DUAA’s impact reaches far deeper. The program equips students with the time management, communication and critical thinking skills typically honed much later in college or early careers.
“DUAA students have two rigorous years of college work behind them,” said Brian Niro, Assistant Dean of DUAA.
“Depending on whether they continue in the same field of study, many enter college as juniors. But beyond cost savings, these students leave knowing what it feels like to meet high expectations - and exceed them.”
Ben agreed, noting the network and confidence he built in the program’s immersive, college-level environment.
“The professors taught me a lot more than just the subject matter. The supportive atmosphere helped me take initiative I might not have otherwise,” Ben added.
“The students and friends I made were all very future-focused and that set the standard for my own goals.”
Recognized for rigor and results
In 2024, DUAA was ranked No. 13 on Chicago Magazine’s list of the Best Public Schools, recognized for its curriculum strength, outcomes and college readiness. The program also earned the AP Access Award in 2023 for serving a representative percentage of AP exam takers from lowincome and underrepresented backgrounds - a key marker of equity and access.
While the broader field of dual enrollment has grown, with 2.5 million U.S. high school students taking at least one college course in 2022-23, according to the Community College Research Center (CCRC), Black, Hispanic and low-income
students remain underrepresented nationally. DUAA’s model helps shift that trend, offering a structured, supported and nocost path to early college success.
Building momentum with students’ futures in mind
DUAA’s success isn’t limited to Illinois.
A new Advantage Academy launched last year in partnership with DeKalb County School District in Georgia, expanding access to students from any high school in the county. This expansion is part of DeVry’s commitment to providing access and opportunities to high school students nationwide.
Programs like DUAA show what’s possible when institutions invest in students early and intentionally. For this year’s graduates and the thousands who follow, the impact isn’t just academic. It’s personal, financial and deeply empowering. Their stories remind us that when students are given the opportunity to rise, they do - and they don’t rise alone.
For students enrolled in a dual education program, the future is bright. To learn more about how DUAA is helping high school students step into their futures early, with confidence, momentum and savings behind them, visit: www.DeVry.edu.

How To Find Resilience And Joy As A Family Caregiver
You don’t have to go it alone.
Did you know nearly 1 in 4 American adults is a family caregiver? And according to a new study from the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, onethird of all caregivers are also members of the “sandwich generation” - caring for an adult and a child under 18 at the same time.
Family caregivers provide help with daily activities, transportation, advocating during medical appointments, companionship and much more.
Especially for those caring for a parent with Dementia or Alzheimer’s, the challenges are great - as are the rewards. A recent National Day of Joy survey by Talker Research on behalf of Comfort Keepers, market-leading provider of inhome care for adults, reveals nearly 3 in 4 caregivers (74%) find the role to be one of the most rewarding of their lives, and nearly all (91%) say it deepens their bonds with the senior in their care.
“Caregiving for an older loved one is a role most of us will play, and the connection you make with your loved one can be incredibly meaningful,” said Sherri Snelling, Gerontologist and Comfort Keepers spokesperson. “The key is to remember to care for yourself, and focus on the joyful moments.”
To help provide care for your loved one with compassion and resilience, keep these approaches in mind.
Especially for caregivers who want to ensure everything is done right, it’s easy to fall into the trap of doing everything yourself.
“I didn’t trust other people to give my father care or understand him like I did,” said Joni. “But that led to exhaustion, so I couldn’t be my best when we were together.”
By assembling a care team, you can consistently provide the assistance your loved one needs. This may include family members, neighbors, friends, community groups and other resources. Ask your loved one’s health care provider about resources in your area.
Another way to ensure extra support is through Comfort Keepers, which employs thousands of caregivers nationwide who deliver joy through interactive caregiving by continually communicating with, involving and engaging with seniors in everyday tasks and activities, providing trusted respite care when you need it.
Self-care isn’t selfish
While your loved one relies on you, it’s crucial to take care of yourself. Find ways to support your own well-being, including getting restorative sleep, eating well and even just a few minutes of walking but most importantly find time to simply do things you love.
“When I stopped doing things that
ARTS&CULTURE
made me happy, so I could care for my
mom, I got easily irritated by little annoyances that might not have bothered me before,” added Bryan. “After I resumed my hobbies just once a week, I felt more positive. I needed to fill my cup so I could have the physical and mental strength to give to her.”
Self-care takes many forms, so it’s vital to learn what’s important for you. Ask yourself what you need to bring your best self to caregiving. This is even more important when you’re in the “sandwich generation” with kids at home.
A Comfort Keepers caregiver can also give you peace of mind that your loved one is in good hands, opening opportunities to care for yourself and others in your family who may need you.
Find moments of joy and gratitude
As you spend time caring for your loved one, notice those moments when you laugh together, share a special memory or just enjoy a good day when the sun is shining.
“Some days feel ordinary, then something breaks through: My dad tells a story I’ve never heard before, or smiles when the family’s cat hops on his lap,” said Saudia. “Those are the moments I’ll remember.”
Caregiving for a family member involves a commitment that demonstrates love and a sense of belonging that’s fun-
