The exhibit, on view through Sunday, January 25th, 2026, will showcase paintings, mixed media and photography by celebrated local artists Phoenix, Lori Arbel, Kim Heise and Karin Batchelder, along with select works and photographs from History Fort Lauderdale’s permanent collection. Colombia has been at the top of Seann Malloy’s bucket list for years, so he recently started planning a solo trip to Cartagena and Medellin. Unofficial sources can be important as well, he notes. “Ask friends or colleagues who have recently visited the area whether it is considered stable, or if it is a conflict zone or near one, while also identifying any violent factions present.” Go social. “We always suggest monitoring the local consulates at your destination on Social Media, and do that prior to deciding on your trip,” says John Gobbels, Chief Operating Officer of Medjet, a medical transport and security response membership program. “Most are very good about tweeting updates on everything from where protests might be happening, to upcoming strikes, areas to avoid and a lot of other general safety information.” Gobbels says in an emergency, it’s often a source of real-time updates customized toward U.S. citizens. Be skeptical. “Crime statistics do not tell an accurate story as to safety in other countries,” says Leonard Sipes, a Former Senior Specialist for Crime Prevention for the Department of Justice who now runs a site called Crime in America. His go-to resource for safety information abroad is the State Department Travel Advisories page. But again, don’t rely on just one source. Watch for these red flags. Some signs should trigger an immediate cancellation, says Muhammed Fawas, a tour guide from Kerala, India, who regularly advises his clients on travel safety. “They include sudden government advisories or

If you see those, it’s time to rethink your travel plans. Beware of overly general advice. For example, last year, right at the start of Nepal’s peak travel season in late September, the southern part of the Kathmandu Valley experienced serious flooding. But it was in an area that tourists rarely visit, notes Naresh Dahal, Operations Manager at Everest Luxury Holidays, a tour operator. “Many travelers saw those news clips and assumed the entire country was unsafe,” he says. “In reality, the actual trekking and cultural destinations remained completely unaffected.” Look before you leap. Global volatility means more destinations can quickly shift in their risk profile. “We’re seeing increased caution advised for areas impacted by geopolitical instability, rising crime rates, or active conflicts,” notes Luis Ortega, Vice President of Risk Assessment for Allied Universal, a provider of private security services. For example, parts of the Caribbean, like Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico, can

change at a moment’s notice. Ortega says it’s best to check before you travel, even if you did your research during the planning phase. One more thing: When you go abroad, consider registering for the State Department’s STEP program, which will keep you informed if the security situation deteriorates. Risk is a personal decision As you look to your 2026 trips, beware of one-size-fits-all advice. For example, I interviewed travelers for this story who said they would never visit a communist country because they feel it’s too dangerous. But I just visited Laos and China, and it was perfectly safe -- for me. The point is, risk is a personal decision, and the general advice experts will give you only provides a framework for making your choice. “Travelers can prioritize safety through thorough preparedness, taking proactive measures, and leveraging support where available,” says Frank Harrison, Regional Security Director for the Americas at World Travel Protection. But the rest -- which includes some heavy lifting on research, contemplation

and consulting with trusted sources -- is up to you. Determining the danger of a destination in 2026 hinges on more than government warnings or crime stats. It’s a mix of hyper-local insights, geopolitical awareness, and self-assessment. Experts stress that travelers must triangulate real-time Social Media updates, cross-border advisories, and on-the-ground expat accounts to navigate risks like sudden unrest or unreliable data. Even meticulous planning can’t guarantee your safety. Volatile regions demand last-minute reassessments, while personal comfort with uncertainty varies widely. Bringing Joy To Those In Need By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

Last week I had a chance to attend the 21st “Hope for the Holidays” presented by PAL and hosted by Sandy Atkins of South Florida Educational Development Center. We know that holidays are not always joyous for everyone. Many residents are struggling during these times and quite often Christmas adds more financial burden especially for families. Sandy Atkins created Hope for the Holidays over 20 years ago. She worked at the time for Broward County addressing homelessness. She has been a member and treasurer of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church right here in our City. As part of the youth ministries, they founded SFEDC to help young students with hands-on educational help. Since 2009, South Florida Educational Development Center, Inc., located at 620

Northwest 2nd Avenue, Hallandale Beach, Florida 33009, has provided individual and group counseling, nutritional education, HIV/AIDS and STD prevention education, substance abuse counseling, job training, job placement and job retention, homeless assistance, outreach, mentoring and tutoring to over three hundred youth and young adults in Broward County, Florida. They have an excellent track record of results. They have documented an 85% success rate from individual and group counseling, tutoring and mentoring and substance abuse and HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy prevention programs. They partner with other Non-Profits to leverage support services programs which have resulted in the successful job placement of 90% of young adults into permanent employment and have documented 60% home ownership from

our housing program. In addition, we have a 95% success rate among our students who have received tutoring from our staff. A few years back Sandy took a break from Hope For the Holidays. The years of volunteerism had taken a toll. I had watched her hard work and truly loved what they do for our struggling families. I asked her if I could do the event. So for a couple of years I picked up the baton. Gulfstream Park graciously hosted the event. The past three years, I along with the group have done the event. PAL, which is housed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Dream Center, formerly Foster Park, hosted the event once again. Obviously, it takes a village to put together this type of event. I helped with fundraising alongside Sandy. We had many gracious supporters. Westway

Towing, Gulfstream Park, Memorial Healthcare System, Wellcare, Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen and FHBPA Association, Eric George Funeral Home, Healing Foundation of America, Design2Form, Jessi Smatt Tennis, many members of the tennis club and myself. This event is not just about toys. They also provided clothing, food, bikes and made sure everyone that attended was able to have lunch. There was entertainment as well as a visit from Santa. Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Offers New Hope for Veterans (Family Features) For generations, America’s Veterans have borne not only the visible scars of battle but also the hidden wounds of war. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Depression, Traumatic Brain Injury and anxiety have long haunted those who served, often with devastating effects on their quality of life and their families. While traditional treatments have helped, many Veterans continue to suffer in silence - left behind by a system struggling to meet their needs. However, science is now reopening doors once closed, and therapies previously dismissed are being reconsidered with fresh eyes. Among them are psychedelic-assisted treatments, which have revealed potential in clinical trials to address the most severe Mental Health conditions afflicting Veterans.

The FDA’s Role Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only one psychedelic-based medication: a Ketamine nasal spray to treat depression. However, other compounds are gaining

the attention of researchers, clinicians and Veterans alike. Psilocybin - the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms” - and a drug similar to LSD have both earned FDA “breakthrough therapy” status for their potential to ease depression and anxiety, sometimes after only a single dose. In 2017, MDMA-assisted therapy was identified as a potential breakthrough treatment option for PTSD; ultimately, the FDA declined to grant full approval. This setback underscored not a failure of science, but the complexity of studying powerful compounds under existing regulatory frameworks. For Veterans, it was a disappointment, yet it also spotlighted the urgent need for continued research and funding. Veterans and Research at the Forefront One compound has captured national attention: Ibogaine, a psychedelic root traditionally used in ceremonies in central and west Africa. Early studies with special-operations Veterans have found improvements in PTSD, depression, anxiety and overall functioning - especially for

those living with the effects of traumatic brain injury. Recognizing this potential, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) is championing these new approaches. At its 2025 National Convention, the organization hosted a groundbreaking psychedelics roundtable that brought together researchers, Veterans, advocates and even a former NFL player to discuss the potential of psychedelic-assisted therapies. The century-old organization supports research into these treatments, pointing out that traditional therapies can fail for as many as 60% of those who try them. It’s also advocating for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to make psychedelic treatments available once they receive FDA approval. “We are experiencing a watershed moment in medical research as psychedelic-assisted therapies have revealed true potential in clinical trials to treat Severe Mental Health conditions,” said Barry Jesinoski, DAV’s National Adjutant. “This glimmer offers veterans contending with not only PTSD but

depression, traumatic brain injury, anxiety and more hope in a world where the status quo is failing them.” A New Mission The promising results of these treatments spurred some states to commit funding toward research into psychedelic therapies or conduct legislative hearings to explore their role in advancing this science. The VA is now conducting studies on MDMA and Psilocybin. While more research is needed to fully understand their risks, benefits and best applications, for DAV, psychedelic medication represents both hope and responsibility. By advocating for rigorous research and ensuring veterans’ perspectives are central to the conversation, the organization is working to accelerate progress while safeguarding integrity. Most Americans With OCD Never Receive Effective Treatment Analysis By The International OCD Foundation Highlights Widespread Gaps In Diagnosis And Care A study released today by the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) finds that millions of Americans living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are not receiving care that could help them reclaim their lives. Up to 10 million Americans live with OCD, yet only one in six receive a correct diagnosis. As a result, 95% of people in the U.S. with OCD do not receive the most effective treatment, despite strong evidence that specialized therapy can significantly reduce symptoms and restore daily functioning. “Without effective care, people with OCD are left living with distress and limitations that don’t have to define their lives,” said Rebecca Deusser, Executive Director of the International OCD Foundation. “Treatments exist that help many people with OCD live productive, fulfilling lives, yet millions are suffering needlessly.” OCD is a common and serious Mental Health condition marked by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that can disrupt work, school, relationships, and everyday routines. Symptoms may involve fears related to contamination, safety, morality, religion, sexuality, or harm. Without appropriate treatment, OCD can severely diminish quality of life - yet many people struggle for years without answers or support. The findings come from the largest analysis of OCD diagnosis and treatment patterns ever conducted, reviewing 10 years of electronic health records from 10.4 million patients across all 50 states. The research found that people affected by OCD are being failed at nearly every step - from recognition and diagnosis to referrals and access to treatment. Only a small fraction of diagnosed patients received Exposure And Response Prevention (ERP), the evidence-based therapy shown to be most effective for treating OCD. In response to the findings, the IOCDF is urging broad, system-level action to close the gap between what is known to work and what patients actually receive. Priorities include: • Implementing routine screening for OCD in all clinical and Mental Health settings • Expanding clinician training so more providers are prepared to accurately diagnose OCD and provide evidence-based treatment • Strengthening adherence to professional care guidelines • Raising public awareness that OCD is both serious and treatable This research was conducted in collaboration with Guardian Research Network (GRN) and Resonance. When treatment is discontinued or adherence decreases, the underlying biological drivers of Obesity, including increased appetite signals, reduced energy expenditure, and a tendency to regain lost fat mass, reemerge. Without ongoing medical support, weight regain is a predictable physiologic response.”

“Obesity is a chronic and progressive disease, and comes with a litany of challenges, so individuals that address the issue are to be commended,” said Dr. Cohen. “But just buying random drugs from Internet pharmacies without proper clinical supervision can lead to significant problems.
