Ways To Conquer Back-to-School Shopping Without Emptying Your Wallet
of school supplies, new clothes, tech gear, and more. For many families, this time of year brings excitement and a fresh start, but also financial pressure. The costs of back-toschool shopping can quickly spiral out of control if you’re not careful. According to recent surveys, American families spend an average of over $800 per child each year on back-to-school expenses, including clothing and supplies!
If you’re looking for ways to avoid breaking the bank this season, you’re in luck. In my role as the Chief Information Officer at TheCardsGuy.com (a comprehensive credit card resource), I have seen firsthand how smart school shopping strategies can make a big difference. Here are 9 effective strategies to conquer backto-school shopping without emptying your wallet.
Take Inventory Before You Shop Before stepping foot in a store or clicking “Add to Cart,” start with a comprehensive home inventory. You’d be surprised at how many supplies are hiding in drawers, backpacks, or storage bins from previous years! Look for unused notebooks, gently used binders, pens, pencils, and markers, backpacks in good condition, and clothing and shoes that still fit. Get your child involved in the process, as they can help assess what’s still usable and what they’ve outgrown, saving you both money and unnecessary clutter.
Set a Realistic Budget & Stick to It
The most important step to avoiding overspending is creating a clear, realistic budget. Sit down and list out expected expenses in categories like school supplies, clothes and shoes, technology (laptops, calculators, etc.), and extracurricular fees or uniforms. Once you have a total budget number in mind, divide it per category and do your best not to exceed it. Shopping with a budget helps you make thoughtful decisions instead of impulsive ones driven by flashy displays or “limited time” sales. I also recommend giving older kids their own mini budget for clothing or supplies, as letting them manage part of the process can be a great lesson in financial literacy.
Shop with the School List in Hand It sounds obvious, but many parents forget to bring the school-supplied shopping list with them or they just shop without one entirely. This results in buying extras they don’t need and missing items they do need. Most schools release supply lists well in advance, and many are available online. Cross-reference it with what you already have from your inventory, and then shop only for what’s missing. Also, avoid the temptation to stock up on extras unless they’re heavily discounted or used frequently throughout the year.
Compare Prices and Use Price-Matching Tools
Retailers know parents are looking for deals, so prices for back-to-school items can vary widely. Don’t assume the first deal you see is the best one. Before buying items, check multiple retailers (both instore and online) and use price comparison websites or browser extensions (like Honey, Rakuten, or Capital One Shopping). On top of this, look for pricematch guarantees, as many big-box stores will honor competitors’ lower prices.
Apps like Flipp and ShopSavvy can also help you scan flyers and barcodes on the go to find the best deal near you.
Time Your
Purchases
Strategically
Not all back-toschool shopping needs to happen in one trip. In fact, spreading out your purchases can save you significant money! For example, shop taxfree weekends (offered in many states) for bigticket items like laptops or calculators. You can also buy off-season clothes by waiting until September or October for fall clothing sales when stores start clear ing out inventory. In addition, grab clear ance deals after the school shopping rush! Many school supplies go on deep discount in late August or early September. Some items, like specialty calculators or optional classroom supplies, can often wait a few weeks, which will give you time to scout for deals or buy used.
tools, as they can help bring forth serious savings. To maximize your savings, sign up for retailer email lists and loyalty programs for exclusive coupons. Also, use cashback websites like Rakuten or TopCashback when shopping online. Pay with credit cards that offer rewards or cashback on purchases. And stack offers by combining coupons with cashback for double the benefit.
Remember that many stores offer student or teacher discounts. If your child
Minimalism doesn’t mean going without; it means being intentional and thoughtful with your purchases.
Turn Back-to-School
Shopping into a Teaching Moment Involve your kids in the budgeting, comparison shopping, and decisionmaking process. This builds essential life skills around money management, critical thinking, and patience. Also, set a spending limit and let them decide how to use it.
has a student ID or .edu email, they might qualify for tech or clothing discounts.
Embrace Minimalism and Needs-First Thinking
Buy Gently Used or Refurbished Items
There’s no rule saying everything has to be brand new. Buying second-hand can dramatically cut costs, especially for clothing, backpacks, lunchboxes, and even electronics. So check out thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army, online marketplaces (Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Mercari), and refurbished tech retailers like Gazelle or Apple Certified Refurbished. When shopping second-hand, always check the condition carefully, especially for tech items. Many refurbished products come with limited warranties, offering peace of mind at a lower cost.
Use Coupons, Cashback, and Rewards Programs
There’s never been a better time to make deals work in your favor. Invest a little time to find coupons and cashback
Finally, one of the most powerful ways to save is to reframe the mindset around back-to-school shopping. It doesn’t have to be a shopping spree, as it’s more so about preparing your child for a successful year (not winning a style contest). So start with essentials and let your kids add more clothing or supplies as real needs arise. Talk to your kids about the difference between wants and needs, which can help avoid peer pressure. And you can even customize plain items at home instead of buying expensive themed ones. A few stickers or fabric markers can turn a $2 folder into something fun and personal!
They may choose to splurge on one item and save on another, or even come away with a little leftover. Either way, they’re learning how to balance priorities and think long-term.
To Wrap It All Up Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to drain your wallet. With a little planning, some smart shopping tactics, and a shift in perspective, you can gear up for the new school year without financial stress. Whether you’re a parent of a kindergartener or a college student, the principles remain the same: plan ahead, shop smart, and focus on what really matters. With these nine strategies in hand, you’ll be well-equipped to conquer the back-toschool rush without sacrificing your savings.

If you’re looking for ways to support your child’s learning before they even enter a classroom, new research from FIU offers an answer that’s backed by science and surprisingly simple: puzzles, blocks, and spatial words.
Spatial reasoning—the ability to visualize how shapes and objects move or fit together—is one of the strongest predictors of later success in Math, Science, Engineering, and even Reading. And the earlier it develops, the better the foundation for future STEM learning.
This is at the center of the new findings from researchers at the Center for Children and Families, published in Infant and Child Development. They discovered that children as young as three years old use the same mental strategies as adults to solve spatial puzzles. In other words, preschoolers aren’t just guessing or copying. They’re mentally rotating whole objects in their minds with surprising speed and accuracy.
“We now know young kids don’t just get the right answer—they’re often using the same mental tools as adults,” said Karinna A. Rodriguez, Lead Author and FIU Doctoral Student. “That tells us we can start supporting these skills much earlier than we thought—through toys, play, and everyday conversations.”
Researchers used eye-tracking technology to observe how children ages 3 to 7 approached a mental rotation task, something used in past studies with adults. The majority of kids used what’s called a “holistic strategy,” mentally rotating the object as a whole rather than breaking it down into parts. Those who used this strategy solved problems twice as fast as those who used a slower, piecemeal approach.
These skills can be supported at home and in the classroom, starting well before age of three.
According to researchers, the key is providing early exposure to spatial experiences. That might mean giving children opportunities to build with blocks or LEGO, encouraging them to rotate puzzle pieces to see what fits, or letting them play with objects that challenge them to think about size, shape, and space.
Talking about those activities is just as important. When parents and educators use spatial words like “under,” “around,” “bigger,” “farther,” or “corner,” they’re helping children develop the mental vocabulary to reason and solve problems. Even simple moments become powerful learning opportunities when parents or educators describe spatial relationships out loud.
“When we use spatial words in everyday situations — like talking about how to stack groceries or fit toys into a bin — we’re supporting the brain’s ability to reason and problem-solve,” said Shannon Pruden, Senior Author and Professor of Psychology at FIU.
The findings build on Pruden’s earlier work showing that language shapes how children think about space—and confirms that the earlier children engage in spatial play and talk, the greater the impact on their success in STEM education.
As families and schools prepare for a new school year, experts say this is the perfect time to rethink how we approach STEM education, starting in early childhood.
Researchers hope to translate these findings into classroom tools, early learning guidelines, and future studies that explore how children switch between different mental strategies—and how adults can support that flexibility through play.
The study was funded by FIU’s Department of Psychology SEED Fund and conducted in partnership with the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, where children participated in the study while exploring exhibits. It’s part of a growing body of research using eyetracking to understand how children think,
learn, and problem-solve in real time.
“Kids aren’t just absorbing information—they’re thinking critically and strategically much earlier than we used to believe,” Pruden said. “And now we have the tools—and science—to help them thrive.

She explored the impacts of climate change, coastal development and pollution on mangrove habitats, highlighting how their destruction not only harms the environment but also disrupts marine life and the health of local waterways. To bring the issue to life, Medrano filmed herself paddleboarding through local waterways, collecting trash and showing firsthand the damage caused by human impact. Kylin Reynolds, Southwest Ranches
Kylin Reynolds’s project “Let’s Get Physical! Promoting Healthy Lives and Well-Being,” tackled the growing issue of youth inactivity by using the power of storytelling to encourage children to embrace movement as a fun and rewarding part of daily life. Aware of the physical and mental health consequences of sedentary lifestyles, such as poor muscle and bone
development, increased obesity risk and lower academic performance, Reynolds wrote a children’s book featuring short stories about kids discovering the benefits of physical activity. She collaborated with a fellow Girl Scout to illustrate the book and worked with students to record audiobook versions, making her stories widely accessible on YouTube and Instagram. Initially aiming to reach 75 students, she quickly surpassed that goal, engaging nearly 200 students in just one month through partnerships with schools and youth organizations. Survey feedback revealed that 98% of participants learned something new about physical activity and many expressed excitement about finding new ways to get moving. To ensure her project’s continued impact, Reynolds donated books to school libraries and classrooms, and her online resources remain available for future readers. In recognition of her leadership and community impact, Reynold was honored with the $3,000 ECHO Scholarship during the awards ceremony.
