You can largely determine where a person will fall in the debate over gun control and the Second Amendment based on their view of government and the role it should play in our lives.

In the first group are those who see the government as a Nanny State, empowered to look out for the best interests of the populace, even when that means overriding our rights as individuals and free will.

These individuals tend to interpret the Second Amendment to mean that only members of law enforcement and the military are entitled to own a gun. Case in point: President Biden recently (and wrongly) asserted that “the Second Amendment, from the day it was passed, limited the type of people who could own a gun and what type of weapon you could own. You couldn’t buy a cannon.”

In the second group are those who see the government as inherently corrupt.

Can you imagine the exhilaration for a brand new horse owner to win her first race at Gulfstream Park on a newly purchased thoroughbred? The thrill for Candice J. Renee (known throughout Gulfstream Park as C J,) was totally electric!

This happened on June 30th.

Ten Pin Ally, C J’s 3-year-old filly, started slow at 6 lengths off the lead, striding from behind, passing every horse, with jockey Victor Lebron cleverly edging her in along the rail to steal the finish. Wow! “Standing in the Winner’s Circle alongside my beautiful young champion was unbelievable,” said C J, “ yielding a challenging and calculated delivery in a bad weather situation.”

Free Services to Surfside Building Collapse Victims and Their Families Miami’s Albizu University has announced that all victims, family members and friends impacted by this morning’s apartment building collapse in Surfside, Florida can receive free mental health counseling in person or via secure telehealth at Miami’s Albizu Clinic by calling: (305) 592-7860. “The mental trauma of surviving and even simply witnessing a disaster like this cannot be understated, particularly, when it involves the perceived safety of one’s own home and the seeming fortitude of a large apartment building,” explained Albizu University Chancellor, Dr. Tilokie DePoo. “The Albizu Clinic provides trauma counseling and psychological crisis intervention.

I am proud to say that our professors and clinicians are already lining up to volunteer and we are standing by to help our neighbors.”

office. Freelance job openings have skyrocketed amid the pandemic, nearly 70% of remote workers say they’re open to such an opportunity. Some of the fastest-growing positions involve accounting, data analytics and health care.

It’s understandable that fiscal conservatives, object to proposals for free four-year degrees. A degree in Film Studies or liberal arts majors, may not give workers, the tangible skills they’ll need on the job. But investment in community colleges is different. It’s a cost-effective use of federal dollars, a “bridge-loan” that recipients who otherwise wouldn’t go on to higher education, will pay back many times over in higher income taxes and in increased productivity.

Nearly a dozen states already recognize the benefits of free two-year colleges and now is the time for the federal government to jump on board. in Battlefield America: The War on the American People, the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms reflects not only a concern for one’s personal defense, but serves as a check on the political power of the ruling authorities. It represents an implicit warning against governmental encroachments on one’s freedoms, the warning shot over the bow to discourage any unlawful violations of our persons or property.

As such, it reinforces that necessary balance in the citizenstate relationship. As George Orwell, who plays a starring role in my new novel The Erik Blair Diaries, noted, “That rifle hanging on the wall of the working-class flat or labourer’s cottage is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there.”

Free community college should be viewed not as a partisan issue, but as an investment that will yield future returns in the form of economic growth. The bottom line: free community college will pay for itself in the long run. The best jobs require more than a high school diploma. A

high school graduate makes $39,000 a year on average, a figure that jumps to $46,000 with an associate degree. That’s almost $300,000 more in earnings over a 40-year career. But nearly 30 percent of Americans over the age of 25, lack a higher education.

Republicans are right that a federal program won’t be cheap.

President Biden’s plan calls for $109 billion to pay for free, twoyear degrees. But that’s peanuts compared to what America will lose in economic output should our skill levels stagnate. A lack of workers with associate or bachelor degrees will cost America $1.2 trillion in economic output over the next decade.

The lost output occurs, when employers can’t fill jobs that need the specialized training that higher education provides. Even with record unemployment, last year, employers had 8.1 million jobs left unfilled.

Employers struggle to find workers with the right mix of technical and soft skills. Some reports show that 83% of bosses can’t find the right candidates.

Three-quarters believe that applicants don’t have the skills that they’ll need on the job.

Free community college can help close the skill gaps by preparing students for the jobs of the future. In 2019, community colleges granted a million associate degrees and certificates.

Nearly 60% of associate degrees and 94% of certificates were for health care, IT, business, computer science and construction trades.

Those skills can help workers succeed outside of the traditional

The case, NY State Rifle & Pistol Assoc. v. Corlett, takes issue with a state law that requires a license in order to carry a concealed gun outside the home.

On the heels of Corlett, is another legal challenge to the state’s authority to regulate—or ban outright—gun ownership outside the home. The attorneys general of 21 states have filed an amicus brief in Young v. Hawaii asking the Supreme Court to uphold Hawaiians’ Second Amendment rights to bear arms outside their homes.

Unfortunately, while the various federal circuit courts of appeal continue to disagree over the exact nature of the rights protected by the Second Amendment, the government itself has made its position extremely clear.

When it comes to gun rights in particular and the rights of the citizenry overall, the U.S. government has adopted a “do what I say, not what I do” mindset.

Nowhere is this double standard more evident, than in the government’s attempts to arm itself to the teeth, all the while viewing as suspect, anyone who dares to

legally own a gun, let alone use one in self-defense.

Indeed, while it still technically remains legal to own a firearm in America, possessing one can now get you pulled over, searched, arrested, subjected to all manner of surveillance, treated as a suspect without even having committed a crime, shot at and killed. (This same rule does not apply to law enforcement officials, however, who are armed to the hilt and rarely given more than a slap on the wrists for using their weapons against unarmed individuals.)

Ironically, while Americans have to jump through an increasing number of hoops in order to own a gun, the government is arming its own civilian employees to the hilt with guns, ammunition and military-style equipment, authorizing them to make arrests and training them in military tactics.

This is the double standard at play here. We’ve allowed ourselves to get so focused on debating who or what is responsible for gun violence—the guns, the gun owners, or our violent culture—and whether the Second Amendment “allows” us to own guns, that we’ve overlooked the most important and most consistent theme through-

out the Constitution: the fact that it is not merely an enumeration of our rights, but, it was intended to be a clear shackle on the government’s powers.

When considered in the context of prohibitions against the government, the Second Amendment reads as a clear rebuke against any attempt to restrict the citizenry’s gun ownership.

As such, it is as necessary an ingredient for maintaining that tenuous balance between the citizenry and their republic as any of the other amendments in the Bill of Rights, especially the right to freedom of speech, assembly, press, petition, security and due process.

In other words, the freedoms enshrined in the Bill of Rights in their entirety stand as a bulwark against a police state.

When all is said and done, the debate over gun ownership in America is really a debate over who gets to call the shots and control the game. In other words, it’s that same tug-of-war that keeps getting played out in every confrontation between the government and the citizenry over who gets to be the master and who is relegated to the part of the servant.

The president’s question was not rhetorical. He was speaking at an event to promote his American Families Plan, which includes spending that would enable Americans to attend a free two-year community college.

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Pramila Jayapal have introduced a similar bill in Congress. The proposals aren’t short of support: 83% of Democrats back free public college and university,

For instance, eleven men were recently arrested for traveling on the interstate with unlicensed guns that were not secured in a case. The group, reportedly associated with a sovereign citizens group, claimed to be traveling from Rhode Island to Maine for militia training.

And then there is a third group, made up of those who view the government as neither good nor evil, but merely a powerful entity that, as Thomas Jefferson recognized, must be bound “down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.”

To this group, the Second Amendment’s assurance of the people’s right to bear arms is no different from any other right enshrined in the Constitution: to be safeguarded, exercised prudently and maintained.

How to exercise this right is the question that keeps jockeying for supremacy, before the U.S. Supreme Court. After declaring more than a decade ago that citizens have a Second Amendment right to own a gun in one’s home for self-defense, the

The City Commission had discussed on street parking in the past, we even attempted to implement a system. We created a Parking Committee, that evaluated parking throughout our City.

Our Police Department, was tasked with issuing stickers and

the costs were, a dollar, a day.

The manual system was inefficient. Without a better way to track spots and implement stickers, the program was abandoned and all that were left, were the metered spots at Joe Scavo.

At the time, we knew it was important to regulate on street parking for many reasons. Our on street parking spots have been abused with storage of vehicles and abandoned vehicles. Monitoring parking, takes valuable Staff time. Many condos were built with one spot, years ago and some without any parking, our Commission had inher-

ited this situation and residents that also bought their units, already know that they only have one spot.

Over the past year, we have been discussing a new modern parking program. The technology is now available where there will be no meters. Even if you do not have a smart phone, you can call in. Our City Commission has conceptually voted to bring an ordnance forward. During the meeting on Monday, our City Manager will be making a presentation on the ordinance and will be answering your questions and concerns.

Over the past year, our City, City Manager and staff have been developing a 5 year budget plan. Without bold changes to reduce costs and generate new revenue centers, our City’s reserve funds will be gone by 2024. One such measure, is the new parking program. Before the break, the City Commission received the City Manager’s budget for 2021-2022, it is online now for our residents to review. One of my goals, before I came back on the Commission to harness technology to ensure that we truly haven’t had access to all of our City business and

most importantly, our budget. I am happy to report, that day has finally come.

During our workshop, Dr. Earle, reported that over the year, many of our department’s budgets, were reviewed with a fine tooth comb. Many departments, over the years, have had staffing cuts that have adversely impacted the ability to collect our revenues. He has recommended, adding staff and actually, over the past year, we have been adopting budget amendments for adding extra staffing. One area, is with our business licensing. We had one staff person, working on implementing and collecting these fees, the staff seems counter intuitive, but the cost is covered and the increase has been revived and has resulted, in better performance.

The City Clerks Office, is also another example. Public record requests and lien searches are not free. Many of these items also need to be in compliance with the state’s laws. Less staff delays resonance and in turn, decreases incoming revenue.

Most importantly, these legal challenges, can cost more money.

Next budget year, we will be discussing even more challenging issues. As many of our readers know, I have and I remain opposed to the BSO merger. Our staff has been working to address an accurate costs of the contract. To date, we know there is an addition cost of $800,000.

Please note, that we still have to pay for building maintenance, equipment and trucks. Another component of the Fire Department, is the fact that our City had applied and received, a Safer Grant to add more employees. Starting in the next budget cycle, these employee’s costs, will be one million dollars.

Critical Race Theory

Just as Karl Marx interpreted all of human history as a fight between the “proletariat” (oppressed) and the “capitalists” (oppressors) using a method I can only call “Illogical Abstractionism,” so also do the “critical race theorists,” who use a rigid abstraction to divide all of mankind into one of two groups.

Karl Marx had no understanding of history or the time course, in human affairs. He never set foot in the situations he wrote about with such certainty.

Stupid. The “revolt of the proletariat” never happened, because the people whose strengths did not include invention of machinery, or founding of factories, (the proletariat) became much more comfortable and wealthier as a result of the existence and work of those whose strengths did include those things (the capitalists). The capitalists provided useful work and it was an enormous benefit to the workers (proletariat).

Perhaps a “trained Marxist” knows the story of Lavrentiy Beria, the chief of Stalin’s secret police. He bragged “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.” That seems to be very like the mantra of the “Critical Race Theorists.”

Several months after Stalin’s death, this slave labor camp supervisor and torturer was summarily executed by his rivals.

Critical Race Theory’s view of the oppressor (whites) and oppressed (people of color) classes quickly leads to logical contradictions. Where is Barack Obama? He is half “white” on his mother’s side and half “black” on his father’s side, whether his father was the elder Obama or Frank Marshall Davis. So, is half of Barack Obama oppressing the other half? Sounds schizoid, but of course, that’s why we have psychiatrists. The question also arises, which half is which? Does

the left half oppress the right?

The right side of the brain is not exactly the same as the left half, so, right away we run into a problem. Same with the front side fighting the back. There are no eyes in the back of the head, so, they are not exactly equal halves. I suppose maybe each cell could line up its mitochondria, and uncurl its chromosomes and divide each, into half.

Obviously crazy, but crazier than dividing society by skin tone?

Psychiatry has not made much progress in treating sociopaths and psychopaths. Perhaps that is because those are moral diseases, not mental ones.

More conundrums: Are Arabs people “of color” They enslaved “black” Africans for centuries. In fact, they bought “black” people as slaves from other “black” people in Africa and sold them to British slave-traders, or took them east to their lands, where they were enslaved. Arabs also enslaved “white” people. Do those “white” people somehow become “black” because they were oppressed? Do “black” people who enslaved other “black” people get transmog-

When Gulfstream Park completed its transformation as a major entertainment center in 2019, C J’s enthusiasm grew even more, and she aspired to become a horse owner in order to have a vested interest in the race.

Her eagerness in owning and racing brought her closer to Orseno, who began giving her pointers on how to select racers.

“There’s so much to learn,” she said. “He showed me how to read a race, rate the speed, check the pedigree and evaluate critical factors in the horse like bone structure, muscle tone, balance, movement and manners.

Then, he turned me on to claiming races.”

In a claiming race, all of the participating horses are for sale.

Prospective buyers commit to the asking price for a particular horse before the race and place their name with proof of financial commitment in a box. If there is only one bidder, he or she gets the horse. If there are several bidders, one name is drawn from the shake as the winner, and the horse is theirs.

Aventura Is Coming: The Brightline Station Will Soon Be A Reality Things are warming up, with it’s boots on the ground, as Brightline is getting ready to reopen with a brighter, revamped service, this Fall.

Aventura Station Located at the halfway point between their Miami and Fort Lauderdale stations, this new 17,500 square-foot station will have unique features that include a new pedestrian bridge over West Dixie Highway and a Miami-Dade Transit bus drop-off canopy. The Aventura station, located just west of Aventura Mall, will be built on three acres of land. The station itself, includes a 860-foot platform, along the tracks to which Brightline and parent company Florida East Coast Railway, have the right-of-way. Construction will also add 240 parking spaces

and the site includes, a bus drop-off area.

It’s an expansion of our family of stations – for me, what I find

exciting about this and other expansion locations, is a validation that intercity passenger rail and connectivity of local destinations for shorter trips – either business or pleasure has a demand. Eight years ago, when I joined this team, I’m not sure that any of us could have foreseen, how the demand for our services would go, they have gone far beyond, the original, four station locations.

Brightline Trains Operating at Top Speeds For the first time since Brightline began testing, trains will be able to operate at the FRA approved and authorized top speeds of 79 miles per hour outside of the specific testing zones and along the entire 67 mile corridor, from West Palm Beach to Miami. Trains will be adhering to quiet zones throughout testing and will not sound horns, in the designated areas.

With trains now operating on the tracks at more regular intervals and at top speeds, Brightline is reminding the public, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists to make safe choices around trains
