HURRICANE SEASON - 2013! Do you have a plan for the next six months?

Top emergency managers from Hallandale Beach, Broward County, the National Weather Service, the U.S. Small Business Administration, FPL and others offered sage advice to a large gathering of residents and visitors at the City of Hallandale Beach’s 2013 Hurricane Preparedness Forum Monday night at the Community Cultural Center. The event was a huge success in part to the City partnerships with a variety of businesses, including Simply Healthcare, Restoration USA, The Home Depot, Costco, WellCare, Memorial Hospital Healthcare System, Mount Sinai Emergency Room, the law firm of Katzman, Garfinkel & Berger and the Hallandale High School Key Club. Meeting to get advice at the forum are, from left, Hallandale Beach Fire Chief and EOC Director Daniel Sullivan, Sydney Sandoval of Restoration USA, residents Barbara Southwick and Sheila Meyerson and Fire Department Citizens Corps Volunteer Leo Grachow. Whole Body Cryotherapy is introduced to South Florida AVENTURA - It is not unusual to see NFL & NBA players in the waiting room of Ice Cryotherapy in Aventura. Especially during off-season athletic training, they are there for their 2.5 to 3 minute session in the Cryogenic chamber. They know that just those few minutes in the hypercooled chamber can calm their inflamed muscles and joints to help prepare their bodies for the grueling NFL & NBA schedules. This is their newest and best alternative for pain relief that avoids painful analgesic injections. Cryotherapy, which is intense hypothermia, can best be described as the application of extreme cold to quiet the nervous system, lessen the inflammatory process, and reduce pain. The attraction to Ice Cryotherapy is the recent installation of a Whole Body Cryotherapy sauna, the first of its kind in South Florida. Over the next few decades, research focused on developing the safe delivery of potentially harmful hypothermia in a cryo-chamber to the largest amount of skin in the shortest amount of time without damaging delicate skin tissue. That led to the development of the Whole Body Cryotherapy sauna. Dr. Abraham Wagner DPM, who currently practices in Aventura, treats his patients with WBC for multiple lower extremity injuries and conditions. “The way WBC works,” he says, “is by subjecting the outer layer of skin to extreme cold for 2 to 3 minutes the thermoreceptors in our peripheral nervous system trigger a sympathetic/ parasympathetic response that immediately reduces inflammation, creates a dramatic vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation, and activates various hormones and enzymes that result in pain relief.” Dr. Abraham Wagner. DPM, is a foot and ankle specialist in Aventura, works at Arthritis & Rheumatic Disease Specialties. Ice Cryotherapy practice is located at 18205 Biscayne Boulevard, Suite 2214, Aventura, FL, in the same plaza as Fresh Market and around the corner from Starbucks. To schedule an appointment, call 305-932-2202. For additional information on Whole Body Cryotherapy, visit the website icecryotherapy.com or google : whole body cryotherapy Aventura.

It’s the one column each year that has become a ritual. One that you never enjoy writing, but something that has to be conveyed to those in our region. This weekend will signal yet another hurricane season. Six months of nail-biting, weather-watching and the reality that just one storm – no matter how big or strong it may be - could really changes lives. With the way the 2012 season came to an end with Super Storm Sandy ripping into the northeast with a winter/late fall storm, this isn’t something that only Floridians and others along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Seaboard has to deal with.

This is the time of year when we put the generators to the test, hoping that if we do lose power and the storm does extensive damage, we will be ready. The one thing that I can never, ever preach enough is to be ready. I could care less if you’ve heard it over and over again – and we are stuck with water, canned goods and other essentials after the season is over. You think your com-

plaints will be heard in places such as Moore, Oklahoma, which saw their world get turned upside down by a violent EF-5 tornado, which accompanies just about every hurricane? It is always about being prepared, never ignore a warning, and when you are told to board up and secure home and property, it isn’t a mere suggestion. This is serious business, and local –––––––––––––––––––––– BLUSTEIN, Page 5A

HALLANDALE BEACH GROWTH CRA has awarded a contract to two contractors to build 12 single family homes As the housing market picks up Hallandale Beach CRA has awarded a contract to two contractors to build 12 single family homes. Over the past years the city has acquired lots through donations from the county, direct purchase and in some cases, liens. These lots were transferred to the CRA and after a thorough inventory the CRA has decided to move forward to develop 12 lots suitable for single family homes. The lots are located with the Palms Neighborhood and will be eligible for sale to qualified buyers under HUD criteria for 80-130 percent of median income levels. In a meeting on May 16th Stuart and Shelby and DeAngelo Developers were both approved. The two contractors presented various floor models comprised of 2- 3 bedroom units with garages. On two of the odd shaped lots, a special design was presented including a two story model. The homes will be sold from 130,000 to 176,000. Both contractors have many years experience building and will be adhering to our Community Benefit Plan.

The CBP provides that city contracts and awards must include a benefit that uses local vendors and sub- contractors. This creates more wealth and jobs by insuring that that tax dollars remain in our community. These homes add a double benefit since they are part of our affordable housing programs. Eligible buyers will be able to apply for affordable housing grants and live here in our city. E911 Update Thanks to the many residents and elected officials throughout Broward the County that lobbied the county commission to change their position on funding communications. The County, on a 5-4 vote has decided to fully fund countywide communications. This is a major step forward to protecting all of our residents and visitors. The ultimate plan will be to ensure all cities are dispatched on one system. The system will have three major PSAPs; dispatch cen-

ters. The centers will be located in the Northwest, Central West and Southwest in facilities that are designed to withstand hurricanes. The most important improvement will be that all calls including cell phone calls will be handled more effectively. LAYNE BOULEVARD LIGHTING In partnership with the Golden Isles Safe Neighborhood District construction has begun to light up the center median south of the GISND guardhouse. This improvement will provide lighting for pedestrians and increase security. FASHION ROW ARTS DISTRICT IMPROVEMENTS If you have not had a chance to visit 1st Avenue; I highly recommend it. Over the past months the city has added on street parking, curbing and landscaping to the area. For many years this area has been strug-

gling to redefine its identity. Many years ago the road was changed to one way. Compounded with the growth of Aventura Mall the once vibrant shopping area began to struggle. The city tried to make various changes to encourage growth and to date this has been the boldest. The city reduced the road to one lane and added parking to slow down traffic and create a friendlier area to walk. The new configuration also added more frontages to some stores. This will allow sitting areas. The next phase will include solar lighting, resurfacing, brick sidewalks, street furniture and drainage. The city will also be looking at adding a mixed used

zoning that will allow artists to live and work. This has been all part of a bold design district concept plan. Hopefully it will spur interest. In addition, the city is looking to move forward on a corridor master plan. We have been informed the Governor may have not vetoed 100,000 funding for Dixie Corridor. To date the CRA has set aside 100,000 for the design phase. GREEN CORNER The City Commission has just awarded its first ESCO. ESCO is an Energy savings contract. This is where the energy improvements are paid for up front in a contract and then the savings every year are used to pay off the improvements. The award

was given to Siemens Industry Inc. They will be conducting an Energy Audit on city buildings and recommending energy efficient retrofits. They will report back to the commission on which improvements should be preformed. The next step will then be awarding projects to construct! IT IS HURICANNE SEASON! PLEASE DUST OFF YOUR PLANS AND BE PREPARED! Please feel free to contact me at anytime with your questions and concerns. I can be reached at 954-457-1318, cell/text 954-632-5700 or e-mail me at www.MayorJoyCooper.com

There is no getting around that the weather we have here 12 months out of the year makes this a true paradise. But with every positive comes that negative of having to live in the fear that storms will form and many will head in this general direction.

Blustein From Page 1A –––––––––––––––––––––– municipalities do not have the manpower to keep up with your noncaring attitude. While we haven’t been directly impacted by a storm in nearly a decade – and over 20 years since Andrew – this is an area that never lets its guard down. We simply cannot afford to. Not in this economy that is already shaky. There is no getting around that the weather we have here 12 months out of the year makes this a true paradise. But with every positive comes that negative of having to live in the fear that storms will form and many will head in this general direction. We just need to be prepared if one hits, and that is the essence of this column that I write. This is in no way ever intended to scare or panic anyone. It’s the reality of being here over 50 years and knowing how to stay positive and ready for the next six months. With the Atlantic hurricane season officially getting ready to start on Saturday, June 1, the names Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dorian, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Ingrid, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo,

Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy will be on our minds until the end of November. STAYING AHEAD OF THE GAME When officials recommend evacuation: • Coordinate your departure with people who will be traveling with you. Notify an outof-area person of your plans. • Secure your home. • Put your disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. Double check evacuation routes and leave. EVACUATION TIPS • Keep your vehicle in good repair with a full tank of fuel • Check on friends and neighbors who may have special needs • Prepare you disaster supplies kit now. Take it with you when you evacuate • Secure you home quickly -- evacuate when asked to do so • Have an out-of-area point of contact whom family and friends can call to learn your evacuation plans • If possible, take a CB Radio or cell phone with you. Use it only in emergencies. • Monitor Emergency Alert Stations (EAS) for the latest news or information. Your Disaster Supplies Kit: • Can Opener • 3-Day Supply of NonPerishable Food • Bedding or Sleeping Bags • Fire Extinguisher • Bleach (no lemon or other additives) • Mosquito repellent • Extra Prescription Medicine (or refill information) • Baby food, diapers and formula • First Aid Kit • Water (gallon per person per day) • Eating Utensils • Tarp, Rope & Duct Tape • Toiletries • Toilet Paper • Batter-Operated

Music Voyager showcases Hollywood, Florida's music & culture HOLLYWOOD - Florida's Hollywood is ready for its close up. The South Florida coastal community with the famous name will take the spotlight on American Public Television's Music Voyager, a music-themed travel show that airs on Public Television and Create TV in North America and on a host of major networks around the world. Florida: The Other Hollywood, the fourth episode of Music Voyager's fourth season, will make its broadcast premiere locally on South Florida's WPBT2 on Tuesday, June 11, 7:30 p.m. The episode will debut nationally on the Create TV network on Tuesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 25th at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. Hosted by ethnomusicologist Jacob Edgar, founder of the wildly eclectic Cumbancha label and curator of the Putumayo label's popular world music compilations, the 30-minute program follows Edgar as he takes in Hollywood's sun-drenched beaches, historic architecture, diverse dining and wide-ranging nightlife. But it's the city's rich cultural identity that gets the most attention. Shot in gorgeous HD, this beautifully filmed exploration of Hollywood's emerging music and arts scene features live performances by Spanish flamenco-pop star Antonio Carmona, captured at the Hollywood ArtsPark Experience: Spain concert produced by The Rhythm Foundation in Downtown Hollywood in December 2012 to kick off Viva Florida 500. Renowned as the voice of the Spanish flamenco-fusion act Ketama and now enjoying a successful solo career, Carmona can be seen performing his hits with top South Florida musicians at the event commemorating the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's arrival in Florida. The live concert footage includes Carmona's high-energy duet with South Florida singer-songwriter Javier Garcia, and an impromptu percussion solo on the 'cajon' drum beneath the park's majestic Baobab trees that shows why Carmona is one of the instrument's most-recorded virtuosos. Carmona's prodigious mastery of modern flamenco is also on display in a lovely sequence shot at the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood. Surrounded by colorful paintings and abstract images, Carmona accompanies himself on acoustic guitar for a soulful solo rendition of his duet with Alejandro Sanz, Para Que Tu No Llores, while the camera swirls around him, intimately capturing every nuance of the performance. Florida: The Other Hollywood was ground-produced by The Rhythm Foundation's James Quinlan and features home-grown musicians and artists with Spanish roots and world-class talent. Cuban-American guitarist Eddy Balzola is featured playing solo at the Riptide Hotel on the Broadwalk and with his fiery Afro-Cuban jazz group Oriente at the Montecristo Lounge during the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk. Also in the spotlight is Hollywood-raised muralist David "Lebo" LeBatard discussing his music-themed contribution to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. Host Jacob Edgar's visits to quirky local hot spots like Resurrection Drums, Cuenca Cigars, Le Tub and South Florida community public radio station WDNA get good air time too, giving viewers a glimpse of some of the area's funkiest institutions.

More than 100 residents gathered at the Hallandale Beach Community Center Tuesday night for the annual 2013 Hallandale Beach Community Forum on Hurricane Preparedness. At the meeting Gordon Gordon, left, and his wife, Sheila Gordon, get advice on hurricane safety from Broward County EOC Director Chuck Lanza, second from right, and Miguel E. Gonzalez, right, of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, married more than 30 years, have gone through a few hurricanes together but were eager to learn more to prepare for this season. AFTER A SEVERE TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE Stay out of disaster areas which could be dangerous and where your presence will interfere with essential rescue and recovery work. Do not drive unless you must. Roads should be left clear for emergency vehicles and debris removal equipment. Remember, debris-filled streets are dangerous.

If power has been out, food that was refrigerated or frozen may not be safe to eat. • Don't light candles. Do not attempt to turn on utilities. • Be wary of dangerous or frightened animals. • Use care handling power tools, gas lanterns, generators

and matches. • Call your insurance company to file a claim if your home is damaged, ask your insurance company for financial help. • Listen to local radio stations for official disaster relief information and instructions. NANDO RESTAURANT AND PIANO BAR

By Suzanne Wallace Nando Restaurant and Piano Bar is a South Florida favorite! Fourteen years at the 2500 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. location tells you something. We all have seen restaurants come and go but Nando Restaurant has been so successful for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, the fine Italian restaurant excels in serving delicious, authentic Italian cuisine made with quality ingredients. Owner, Nando Sorrentino admits it is not easy to keep things going with the price of ingredients rising every year. Nando has a well-earned reputation for serving only the best and refuses to compromise with the quality of his food. Nando uses only tomatoes shipped in from the Vesuvius Region, Tuscan Extra Virgin Olive Oils and many other gourmet products from Italy. Some of you may remember Nando Sorrentino’s Villa Capri, first in 1981 in Miami Lakes then in the Carriage House Hotel at 54th and Collins. In 1990 he opened Versacce on South Beach and later Positano’s at 176th and Collins Avenue. The reason why his restaurants have done so well is his reputation for quality. He brought his experience and love of the business to Hallandale and enjoys his regular customers and meeting new ones every night. Celebrities, out-of-town visitors and locals get the same wonderful food and entertainment night after night. Don’t be fooled, the restaurant looks expensive with the fresh white cloth tablecloths and wonderful ambiance but the prices are reasonable and the menu is filled with mouth-watering, authentic Italian selections. For instance just to list a few of the delectable choices on the menu: ANTIPASTI/APPETIZER Zucchini Flower (filled with mozzarella) (each) – $2.50. Cozze All’Orvieto – $12.95. (Fresh mussels steamed in Orvieto wine, garlic and fresh herbs) Pomodoro & Mozzarella – $9.95. (Caprese with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil) Carpaccio Di Manzo Al Tartufo – $12.95. (Rare beef on rucola with parmigiano slices and tartufo oil) And there’s Mediterranean octopus salad or grilled, clams, traditional Neapolitan rice balls and eggplant, and wonderful Pizza Margherita! And those are just some of the appetizers! There’s fresh soup made every day and fresh salads. The Risotti dishes...Risotto with Wild Mushrooms – $16.50. with Mixed Seafood – $19.95. Pasta dishes are cooked to order and you have your choice of Angel Hair, Spaghetti, Penne or Fusili. Fresh Tomato Sauce – $10.00. Bolognese/Norma/Aurora – $12.50) Clam Sauce/Amatriciana – $14.75. Pescatore (Mixed Seafood) – $21.75.

Orecchiette Rustiche (rapini sausage & nuts) – $18.95. Gnocchi Levanto (Pesto and shredded filet mignon) – $18.95. And more............ SECONDI (ENTREES) Grilled Chicken Breasts (Served on a bed of organic salad) - $14.00 Chicken Nostrano (Mushrooms, pearl onions, peppers) – $17.00 Chicken Al Mattone (1/2 chicken under a brick) – $16.00 Veal Parmigiana – $20.75 Veal Di Bosco (Marsala & wild mushrooms) – $22.75. Pork Chop Al Rosmarino – $19.00. Grilled Black Angus Steak (14-oz.) – $26.00. Pesci E Frutti Di Mare (Fish and Seafood) Grilled Red Snapper – $18.00. Red Snapper Livornese (onions, olives, tomatoes and capers – $19.75. There’s always a couple of salmon, shrimp, and lobster dishes along with a Branzino Filet (fresh Mediterranean striped bass). There are many more selections too numerous to mention in this article. Entree are served with Pasta Al Pomodoro or Daily Vegetables. Nando says “Our pizza is the absolute best pizza in town.” Always ask for the Specials of the Day and the Desserts are wonderful! Take advantage of the summer discount on your total check! The palate pleasing food is not the only attrac

tion. Nando Restaurant has one of the few remaining piano bars in South Florida. The music starts at 7:00 PM and you are encouraged to singa-long with Nando! It’s great fun for a couple or a crowd! Kitchen hours are listed below, but stay and enjoy the music and bar. The fun continues into the night! Enjoy the many call drinks for $6.00 and 2 for 1 drinks. SPOTLIGHT ON STAGE Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts presents a stunning aerial spectacular ‘Tango Takes Flight’ Performed in more than 100 cities around the world, 8CHO (pronounced “OCHO) comes directly from Buenos Aires to dazzle Miami audiences in its South Florida premiere at the Adrienne Arsht Center. The international ariel dance sensation created by critically-acclaimed choreographer Brenda Angiel, no stranger to the American Dance Festival, brings to Miami this high-flying two-week limited engagement. The Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House will be transformed into “sexy, exhilarating, gravitydefying performances, by aerialists, various dancers and musicians, who perform entire routines in the air. Suspended on ropes, and soaring up to 20 feet above the stage, the performers will leap, swivel and fly through the air, creating sort of a kaleidoscopic movement and action. In addition, 8CHO will fascinate the audience with its original acoustic and electronic hip-hop and tango music score, composed by Juan Pablo Arcangeli and Martin Ghersa, and singer, Alejandro Guyot, who appears in a few of the numbers. The dramatic lighting and different scenes give the impression of being in a sophisticated nightclub where there are few sensual couples present. Two men competing for the attention of a woman, a lonely man without a partner, and a woman looking for a long, lost love, as the scene progresses. 8CHO will heat things up at the Arsht Center with a preview on June 20th with official opening June 21, through June 30. Tickets are $35 to $75, at the box office, located at 1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. For show times and information call (305) 9496722. Not recommended for children. Contains brief nudity.

“MY SON, THE WAITER-A JEWISH TRAGEDY” NOW ON STAGE AT BROWARD STAGE DOOR THEATRE Brad Zimmerman, hasn’t waited on tables for the past six years, still he remembers every single experience he’s had with his patrons. Every finicky and cranky diner who made his life miserable, by under-tipping, working overtime and having to memorize and keep repeating the daily specials, only helped him to write his one man play, “My Son, the Waiter.” After twenty seven years of trying to become an actor, and being the son of an overbearing mother, he was able to gain enough material to write even more than one play. As early as the 1990's he knew he wanted to be a standup comedian. As he pursued his love for comedy, he became better and better, finally able to get the attention, he needed, in order to be good enough to be the opening act for Joan Rivers, Brad Garret, Dennis Miller, Julio Inglesias, Billy Crystal and one of the best comedians, George Carlin. He was also able to star in the soap operas “Loving,” "All My Children,” and appeared in the Television show,

“The Sopranos,” as Johnny Sack’s lawyer. Brad is a very funny comedian with a very unique and original voice in the world of comedy. Born in Bergen County, New Jersey, he combines all his years of acting into his true pride and joy, his one-man show, “My Son the Waiter, A Jewish Tragedy,” now on stage at the Broward Stage Door Theatre, through June 30, 2013. Tickets are $38. Evening performances at 8 p.m. Matinees at 2 p.m. Show times vary every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call the box office at (964) 344-7765, located at 8036 W. Pre-construction plans for the redesign of B.F. James Park will be unveiled in a community forum at 6 p.m., tonight, Thursday, May 30, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, 816 NW 1st Avenue. Lead architects and engineers, Bermello Ajamil & Partners, will display the pre-construction plans. The park will include a new walk-in swimming

Residents are urged to attend the forum to learn about the amenities and how the City’s Community Benefit ordinance will provide construction opportunities to City residents and subcontractors. Burkhardt Construction Incorporated of West Palm Beach has been selected as the

Mr. Radcliffe, who served in Vietnam, joined other veterans and City residents in paying respect to those soldiers who gave so much in the name of freedom. The ceremonies at Hallandale Beach Cemetery and Foster Park attracted the largest crowd in years as the community came together to honor all soldiers.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS "After searching for a caring, compassionate, conscientious, and competent dentist I finally found Elite Dental Center. Not only has Dr. Richard Silver continually provided state of the art treatment but he responds promptly to emergency situations with phone calls as well as with follow-up appointments. Dr. Silver is unique among dentists. He really cares about his patients, taking time to fully explain all the treatment procedures that are to be performed in an easily understandable way. If all dentists were like Dr. Silver there would be no dental phobia in America an appreciably less visits to the dentist," says Hugh B. "Dr. Silver is just great. A friend recommended him to me, and it took only one appointment for me to switch to him from my old dentist. He did an outstanding job filling a cavity my old dentist had done a terrible job on. And he did what's certainly the best cleaning job I've had in years. In all, he's extremely thorough, meticulous, careful, and knowledgeable. On top of that, he's a super nice guy -- funny and easy going (yet very professional). The staff is just as nice and helpful. I highly recommend him,” says Raul S. "Dr. Silver is efficient and runs on time. I really appreciate that of him. I also don't have to wait a long time to get an appointment either. His staff is courteous and Dr. Silver cares about patients and dentistry," says Patricia D.

services like dentures in one day and repairs while you wait. Whether your smile needs a quick and thorough cleaning or a more comprehensive smile make-over, Dr. Silver and his staff are specialty trained in most state-of-theart techniques to bring you the newest treatments and specialize in dental implants. Dental Implants are done for a variety of reasons. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, statistics show that nearly 70% of adults aged 35 to 44 years in the United States have at least one missing tooth due to an accident, tooth decay, gum disease, or dental fractures. But there’s no need to go through life with missing teeth. There are many good alternatives available. Dental Implants and Dentures are the most common options and can work in conjunction with each other. After a while the tooth your partial denture is hooked to may decay. If you are missing teeth and your gums and jaw are healthy, you may benefit from dental implants, which are replacement teeth that are implanted surgically into the jawbone. Two or more implants may serve as a base of support for several replacement teeth. Implants are tiny titanium posts that are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing. Aesthetics is one of the biggest reasons for opting for dental implants because they look and feel as natural as real teeth and help to create a beautiful smile. Normal chewing and bite can also be re-established which keeps surrounding teeth, gums and jaws working properly. With ad-

vancement in the technology, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Most people worry about the amount of time it takes for often complicated dental implantations as well as the required period of recovery. Conventional implant procedures often require several appointments and long hours of surgical procedures, not to mention the recovery time. However, technological advancements significantly reduce the amount of time for an implant to be placed as well as for recovery. Today, implantation only takes a day and virtually no recovery time is needed as patients can eat almost anything they want immediately after. Dental implants are changing the way people live! With dental implants, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy life. If, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, they ask you to undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history. Your questions and concerns are important and their team works very closely to help make your procedure a success. Many options can be consid-

ered if you decide to have implants. You can decide which type of restoration is attached to the implants. Dental Crowns (single teeth) are the most common restoration attached to dental implants but other options are bridges and dentures. If you are wondering what would be best and healthiest for you, come in for a FREE CONSULTATION! Botox and Juvéderm and Dysport are also offered and for a limited time you can enjoy a FREE CONSULTATION to evaluate, how and which, procedure would work best for you. When your child asks about sex, don’t hide your head in the sand Q…Dr. Ron…, My 11 year old son is hinting to us about sexual issues he is obviously learning from his friends. We are conservative people who have difficulty talking about these issues. We are also concerned about school programs he may enter soon that offers sex education from a different viewpoint than what we may believe. Should we send him for some counseling with a professional? P.J. Miami…. A…Absolutely not…It is up to you and your husband to get over your hang-ups, and give your child what he needs…, open and honest discussions with his parents….Most parents are not enthusiastic communicators about sexual issues with their children. In fact, it is estimated that less than 20% of parents engage in any meaningful conversation on this topic with their kids..So if their kids are not getting direction and information from their parents, where do you suppose

most kids are getting their information from?.. You guessed it… from other kids, and the entertainment media. It is no wonder that the U.S. has one of the highest unwanted teen-age pregnancy rates in the world… .Schools also supply some help on this topic. About 70% of all school districts in the USA offer some type of sex-education programs. Fearing protests by some parents, the majority of these programs are of an extremely basic nature, emphasizing the biological aspects, rather than the real social issues that affect common teen-agers. School programs usually present in 3 ways: 1) Abstinence Only Programs are the most basic approach, and

offer no information about the use of contraceptives, relationships, or sexually transmitted diseases. 2) Abstinence Plus Programs offer besides basic biology lessons, information about sexually transmitted diseases, and the proper use of contraceptives. 3) Comprehensive Programs cover almost all issues regarding sexual matters including relationship issues and sexual orientation. As you might imagine, which program is taught in each school is highly influenced by the dominant ideology of the parents residing in each district. Research on the effectiveness of these three programs have supported comprehensive programs as having more positive out-

comes, and correlate with students experiencing reduced pregnancies, and less high-risk sexual behavior. While I can understand how more conservative parents would rather not have their children learn about many sexual topics from a school program, they then best stand up to the plate, and talk to their kids. Hiding one’s heads in the sand, praying that the Lord will handle it.., is just too often an accident waiting to happen.

P.J., if you insist on professional counseling, don’t get it for your son: get it for yourself P.J. so you can become a better communicator and source of information for your son…Best

of Luck. Dr. Ron Dr. Ron is in private practice in Hallandale Beach You can contact him at 954-270-4226.

Simple ways to save water, money and your landscaping this summer • Rather than spraying water over plants, use a method that delivers the right amount of water where it will do the most good - the roots of plants. (BPT) - With many states facing drought this summer, homeowners across the country will be looking for ways to save their landscaping while conserving water at the same time. Even if you're not in a drought-affected area, it pays to keep conservation in mind when it comes to watering outdoors. Using less water is good for the environment and your wallet. Fortunately, maximizing the efficiency of your watering efforts and taking steps to conserve water outdoors can help trim your water bill this summer, even if you live in a severe drought area, such as in the western regions of the

country. Here are simple ways to conserve water, save money and preserve your garden, lawn and landscaping this season: EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE IRRIGATION Traditional watering methods for lawns, gardens and flower beds waste a lot of water through run-off, over-saturation and evaporation. Rather than spraying water over plants, use a method that delivers the right amount of water where it will do the most good - the roots of plants. Drip irrigation systems, like those offered by Mister Landscaper, can help you water more effectively. These systems

deliver water as close as possible to plant roots, allowing you to achieve better results with less water used. You'll also lose less water to run-off and evaporation. Place the system on a timer, and you can also ensure you're watering at optimum times of the day to reduce evaporation and waste. A starter kit with 50 linear feet of tubing - ample enough to handle most gardens and planting beds - costs less than $1 per foot. Visit www.misterlandscaper.com to learn more. Water lawns, gardens and flower beds either early in the morning or as evening approaches to ensure you don't lose moisture to the hot sun. And if a day is

Water lawns, gardens and flower beds either early in the morning or as evening approaches to ensure you don't lose moisture to the hot sun. And if a day is windy, hold off watering lawns altogether as the breeze could leave you watering the sidewalk or driveway, rather than your grass.

windy, hold off watering lawns altogether as the breeze could leave you watering the sidewalk or driveway, rather than your grass. REUSE, RECYCLE AND PRESERVE Even during a drought, some rain and condensation will occur. Take steps to capture natural moisture. A rain barrel situated beneath a

downspout ensures you can catch run-off from your home's roof. While using barrel water may not be practical with most irrigation systems, it's a great option for watering container gardens or even indoor plants. You can also use household water, such as water left over from boiling vegetables or pasta, to water potted plants. Just be sure to

let the water cool completely before using it. You can help plants retain more moisture by placing organic mulch around the roots. The mulch will also help keep down weeds that would compete with plants for much-needed moisture. Depending on where you live and the type of mulch you choose, you can buy a bag of mulch for just a few dollars. Finally, adjusting the type and location of plants is a great way to grow a drought-resistant garden or landscaping bed. Check with your local agricultural extension or search online for naturally drought-resistant species that do well in your area. By planting these hardier varieties, you can help keep your environment green and growing through a long, dry summer - and avoid the money drain of high water bills.

Add fresh grapes for great summer dishes (BPT) - Grapes from California are in abundant supply throughout the summer, which is welcome news for those seeking a healthy, refreshing snack. They're also a boon to the home cook: grapes provide bright color, a sweet-tart flavor and a refreshing burst of juice to warmweather dishes. Grapes also complement, enhance and balance many flavors, including salty, hotspicy, herbaceous, sweet (such as honey and maple syrup), citrus, vinaigrette-tart and many more. Their juicy and crisp qualities work well with other textures, too. Grapes are always ripe and ready to use in a word, dependable. Added bonus: grapes are a natural source of antioxidants and other polyphenols, which may contribute to heart health. To enjoy the juicy sweet delight of grapes in fresh summer salads, try these recipes: QUINOA SALAD WITH GRAPES, ALMOND AND SPINACH 1 cup multi-colored quinoa Salt 1/3 cup Orange Mustard Dressing (recipe follows) 1/2 cup slivered almonds 2 cups washed and

Recipes to fill up without filling out (NewsUSA) - For anyone looking to embrace a healthy physique this bathing suit season, it helps to stick to fresh fruits and veggies. "Yeah," you sigh, "as if I haven't heard that one before." Yet, it's true -- not to mention, it's delicious and pretty easy. Certain fruits allow conscientious eaters to fill up without filling out. For example, According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, watermelon, is 92 percent water -- so it's hydrating and satiating without any disadvantage of fat or cholesterol. Even better, if you or your kids have an affection for sweets, why not indulge in watermelon? Otherwise known as "Nature's candy," it provides several vitamins. Vitamin A plays an essential role in eye health and infection-fighting white blood cells. Vitamin B6 helps produce antibodies, and Vitamin C helps protect the body from harmful free radicals. Try out one of these two beautifully simple recipes highlighting watermelon. They're super easy, great for kids and delicious at breakfast and lunch, not to mention picnics and barbecues. Find more watermelon recipe ideas at www.watermelon.org. WATERMELON WALDORF SALAD 2 cups cubed watermelon (about 1/2-inch cubes) 1/2 cup sliced celery 1/2 cup seedless red grape halves Dash of salt 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted Stir watermelon, celery and grapes together in a bowl. Just before serving, stir salt into yogurt for dressing. You may want to add a little water to lighten the thickness. Pour mixture over fruit, and stir until coated. Sprinkle with almonds. WATERMELON POPSICLES Watermelon slices, cut to triangular wedge shapes, about 1/2 -; 1 inch thick Popsicle sticks For an easy, fun take on the yummy watermelon slice, insert a popsicle stick into the rind. Summer entertaining made easy (BPT) - The weather is warming up and summer is right around the corner. From holiday celebrations to road trips, family vacations to block parties, it's the time of year for cookouts. Make all of your summer cuisine extraordinary no matter what the occasion with these five simple tips: * Kick seasoning up a notch - Spice up your main dish and sides by adding bold flavors through marinades and dips. Pair grilled shrimp with a homemade barbecue sauce or create a delicious horseradish sour cream for seasoned waffle fries. * Create cutting-edge comfort food - When menu planning for summer get-togethers, add a twist to a classic recipe. It doesn't have to be a large departure from a family favorite; try swapping out a regular hamburger bun with artisanal bread or include sweet potato fries as a side dish rather than traditional french fries. * Add some color to your meal - Never underestimate the importance of an aesthetically pleasing meal. For an easy summertime side, try Alexia Sauté Reds - a delicious combination of roasted red potatoes, baby portabella mushrooms, whole green beans and onions bathed in thyme-infused 100 percent olive oil. This tasty side is made on the stovetop in less than 12 minutes. * Incorporate the flavors of the season into your cocktails - Use seasonally fresh fruits and vegetables as more than a garnish to create memorable cocktails. Start with your spirit of choice and try the following refreshing flavor combinations: basil and grapefruit, apple and sage or rosemary and lime. * Fill the grill - Simplify cooking - and clean-up by doing as much cooking as possible in your outdoor kitchen. Sides such as Alexia Waffle Fries or Panko Breaded Onion Rings make summer entertaining a breeze when prepared on the grill and are delectable complements to a variety of grillfriendly fare, from steaks and sweet corn to barbecue chicken and asparagus (and beyond). To prepare, simply create a foil grilling tray using two pieces of aluminum foil by crumpling the top piece, creating an edge around the bottom smooth piece to make a tray, and grilling on medium for about 20 minutes. Sophisticated summer menus are easy to create with help from Alexia Foods, a line of premium, all-natural frozen potatoes, breads and side dishes. For delicious seasonal recipes, visit www.alexiafoods.com. GRILLED SHRIMP WITH HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE Grilled Shrimp Ingredients: 16 large jumbo shrimp

GRILLED SHRIMP WITH HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE. 1/2 cup olive oil Kosher salt Fresh ground pepper Homemade Barbecue Sauce Ingredients: 1 slice bacon 1 bunch fresh thyme Extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, chopped 2 cups ketchup 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup molasses 2 tablespoons red or white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon paprika (or smoked paprika if available)

sauce just before serving.

Shrimp Directions: Use a pair of scissors or paring knife to slit the backs of the shrimp and remove the vein. Combine the shrimp and olive oil in a bowl and toss evenly to coat. Cover and keep refrigerated until ready to grill. Prepare homemade barbecue sauce (directions below). Prior to heating, spray grates of a large outdoor grill using PAM® Grilling, specially formulated for no-stick performance at higher temperatures. Next, heat the grill to medium-hot. Season shrimp with salt and pepper and place on the grill. Baste with the homemade barbecue sauce and grill for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Brush with more

Homemade Barbecue Sauce Directions: Wrap the bacon slice around the bunch of thyme and tie with kitchen twine so you have a nice bundle. Heat about 2 tablespoons of oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the bacon-wrapped thyme and cook slowly for 3 to 4 minutes to render the bacon fat and give the sauce a nice smoky taste. Add the remaining ingredients, give the sauce a stir and turn the heat down to low. Cook for 20 minutes to meld the flavors. Once the sauce is done cooking, remove the thyme bundle and discard. Take about 1 1/2 cups of the sauce and reserve for serving alongside the shrimp. Pair with Alexia Sweet Potato Puffs or try grilling Alexia Waffle Cut Sweet Potato Seasoned Fries. Grilling Directions for Alexia Waffle Fries: Preheat gas grill to medium (400-450 F.). Next, create a foil grilling tray using two sheets of heavy duty aluminum foil - crumple one sheet of foil and place it top of the second piece of smooth foil, folding up the edges of the bottom smooth piece to create a tray. Arrange waffle fries in a single layer on the grilling tray, place on grill and close the lid. Cook to desired color and texture, turning once or twice during the cook time, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
