A South Florida Legend: Beloved Rabbi Dovid Bryn zt”l

Sunday, 6 Iyar - May 4, 5785 (2025), marked the 23rd Yohrtzeit Anniversary of the passing of South Florida Legend, the beloved Rabbi Dovid Bryn zt”l, Founder of Chabad Chayil & the California Club Shul. Mostly known for his unending acts of kindness and genuine love for every human being, he is truly missed by all who knew him.

Some Rabbis are known for their gigantic shuls and temples, but Rabbi Bryn had a much bigger Shul, one not bound by walls. His shul was in the flea markets, soccer fields of the JCC & in people’s homes. His Sunday afternoon would be spent in a teenager’s living room with a pair of Tefillin and a group of friends. His Shul was in the community’s hearts.

Rabbi Bryn was a Chabad Rabbi and emissary of The Rebbe to North Dade, whose life was tragically cut short at age 40 by Marfan Syndrome, a condition that affects the body’s connective tissue. For over a quarter of a century, Rabbi Bryn –the son of Holocaust survivors - courageously battled the fatal disease that decimated his heart, yet managed to minister to, counsel and save tens of thousands of Jews and non-Jews alike.

Rabbi Bryn fed the hungry and poor,

counseled the sick and the troubled - all with great courage, fortitude and selfsacrifice. He arranged marriages, taught Torah and ethics to thousands, bridged the interfaith gap by working closely with people and clergymen of all faiths … he was the living embodiment of kindness and bravery.

Some might be troubled by the precariousness of constantly living on the edge of existence, but the rabbi’s overflowing concern for others left no room for worry over his own well-being. He lived the equivalent of 120 years of good in a third of the time.

One friend commented on: RabbiDovidBryn.org which was created to remember the legendary Chassid, ‘If he could breathe, then he would talk to others about G-d’s good, the beauty of a Mitzvah, or life’s bright spots. If he could walk, then he would go to share life with others and show a positive perspective as it should be seen. If he could drink, then he would toast L’Chaim to all things positive and constructive. If he could sing, then he would. If he could do it, then he did. He showed strength not owned by men who appear stronger. He showed love that is only written about. He lived a full life of treating others as one would

treat themselves. When I need an example of the unrelenting power of love, I think of him.’

For the past 22 years, we’ve been getting together for an annual Farbrengen, to say a l’chaim, reminisce about the good times shared together and most important, to talk about how he chesed - his loving kindness for every human being could be emulated. On Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., was an hour-long Farbrengen & inspiration. The breakfast Farbrengen took place at Chabad Chayil, temporary location behind 2601 Northeast 211th Terrace, in the Highland Lakes section of West Aventura. The Farbrengen was also broadcasted on Facebook Live as well as YouTube Live. It was also shown live at: RabbiDovidBryn.org.

Shacharit Services began at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Breakfast Farbrengen at 10:00 a.m. Afterwards, they went to the Mount Sinai Cemetery in Opa Locka to say Tehillim with a Minyan at his resting place at 11:30 a.m.

To view or share photos or experiences of this remarkable man, please visit: RabbiDovidBryn.org. You can also learn about the new Chabad Chayil center being built in his honor, by calling: (305)

770-1919 or visiting the website. To dedicate a part of the new building or even 1 square foot for $180, visit: https:// BuildChabadChayil.org.

Please dedicate this day to doing an extra Mitzvah, by going out of your way to doing someone a favor. You can be his hands and feet, in making this world a better place. Think global, but act local! Don’t push it off for tomorrow, do something today! And you will have a tremendous part of bringing healing to a wounded world; making it a better place for all, one good deed at a time, until the world reaches perfection, with the coming of Moshiach. May that happen today!

New Hope For Pancreatic Cancer Patients

For over a decade Dr. Robert Donoway, a Pancreatic Cancer surgeon, has been treating select patients who have Pancreatic Cancer with a new form of technology called irreversible electroporation, sometimes referred to as the NanoKnife procedure. The treatment which is FDA approved and involves the passage of high voltage electric current through probes placed in the Tumor during a minimally invasive procedure that requires only an overnight hospital stay, has been found to be quite effective in treating patients with advanced stage disease. The problem until recently was that only tumors smaller than 3 cm could be treated. Dr. Donoway has pioneered the development of a device that enables the treatment of much larger tumors. Because he matches the treatment with each patient’s molecular testing and circulating tumor cell analysis he has been able to identify patients that may still be candidates for treatment even though they were originally excluded based on tumor size, location and complexity. This has been a project in evolution and now he is submitting it for publication on those patients with advanced Cancers now out over 5 years who have

had the procedure as part of a multimodality strategy along with standard of care treatments. Dr. Donoway explains...”clearly this is not for every patient with Pancreatic Cancer, but does offer an opportunity for some who were denied treatment simply because of the limitations of the original design and comes at a critical time as recently published data from a large international collaborative group shows that patients with advanced and oligo-metastatic Pancreatic Cancer do better when treated more aggressively than with just chemotherapy alone by almost 3x longer median survival.” It has become clear that although Pancreatic Cancer is most often diagnosed at a late stage and benefits from palliative chemotherapy in most cases for less than a year, it will be important in the future to individualize patient treatment not only with newer targeted molecular therapy such as K-ras agents but to also remember to include offering such techniques as Pancreatic NanoKnife, Irreversible Electroporation, so that patients do not miss the treatment window of opportunity and are not denied it’s benefits.

Dr. Donoway is a Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist and past Chief of Surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital as well as “former” Director of the Memorial Regional Cancer Center (now the MCI) and a past Chairman of the Aventura Hospital Cancer Committee. “He is also a former President of the American Cancer Society in South Florida and well as past recipient for Medical Advancement of the Year.” He currently serves as the Medical Director of ATLAS ONCOLOGY - Located in Hollywood at 4000 Hollywood Blvd; in the Presidential Circle building at Suite 555 South. Britney Spears The Musical: First In Florida - Once Upon A One More Time, Jr.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts education department has been selected by Music Theater International (MTI) to produce a pilot production of a junior version of the new Britney Spears musical, “Once Upon A One More Time.” MTI is one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies that grants theaters from around the world the rights to perform Broadway musicals.

Under the supervision of Broward Center’s Artist-In-Residence Tammy Holder, the pilot will be produced and performed by 39 students in grades 5 through 12 from 17 public and private schools across South Florida who take classes at the Broward Center as well as four neurodiverse students from The Friendship Journey. These students are the first in Florida to produce this MTI pilot. For set construction, the Broward Center has partnered with Nova Southeastern University’s Tech Theater program. Holder and the students are one of six groups nationally providing feedback to MTI about the script, the music and all other production elements, including the set that the licensing agency will use to incorporate into the final Junior show kit. That final production is then added to the MTI Junior catalog to be available for schools around the country for students to experience.

“We are thrilled to be the first in Florida who have the privilege of working on this junior pilot production from the ground up,” said Holder, who is also in charge of supervising the students throughout the production process. “After I saw the show in New York, I thought it would be great for our students to do, as many of them have some professional experience already and even one of our choreographers is a former student herself. I’m very proud of what they are accomplishing and look forward to seeing the show come to life on stage.”

The pilot production of “Once Upon A One More Time, Jr.” will debut in the Broward Center’s Amaturo Theater on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:30 p.m., with two additional performances on Friday, May 23rd at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, May 24th at 2:00 p.m.

Powered by the chart-topping hits of the undisputed Princess of Pop, Britney Spears, “Once Upon A One MoreTime, Jr.” turns those favorite fairy tales upside down with a clever twist. When a fairy godmother goes rogue and plops copies of The Feminine Mystique in the laps of classic heroines, the damsels embark on a quest to rewrite their stories and redefine “happily ever after.” Once Upon A One More Time, Jr. weaves many of Britney’s smash singles including: “Crazy,”

“Oops!…I Did It Again,” “Circus,” “Lucky” and “Toxic” into a big, modern, musical dance party with Britney’s beating heart at its core. Perfectly soundtracked by Britney’s sparkling discography, it transforms the musical into a high-octane concert that will leave theatergoers breathless.

Mind Over Milliseconds

Mental Resilience at the Miami Grand Prix

At the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, precision was everything—and still, it wasn’t always enough. During Day 1 qualifying practice, two drivers clocked identical lap times down to the thousandth of a second, momentarily tying for first place. For a brief, electrifying instant, they were on top—until another two racers delivered laps just milliseconds faster, coming in close together and knocking their competitors down to third and fourth. The ruthless reshuffling continued, etched onto the leaderboard in cold, unforgiving numbers: 1:28.0, then +0.3, +0.5, and so on. No one made a mistake. They were simply... outpaced.

Watching it unfold doesn’t feel like failure. It feels rather like emotional whiplash—like putting your entire soul into

something, only to watch it be outrun by the tiniest margin imaginable.

Mental Endurance at High Speeds

When things go wrong, F1 drivers don’t have time to get upset or dwell. They use short phrases or breathing techniques to keep going.Their brains learn to compartmentalize by blocking out fear and staying calm under pressure. Moreover, they focus on the next lap. This ability to reset and move forward helps them stay confident and not spiral into self-blame.That’s what mental endurance looks like—staying focused, even when pressure mounts.

The Neuroscience of High-Speed Decision-Making

Formula 1 drivers operate under immense cognitive demand. Decisions

whisper of overcorrection can end your day.

Teamwork in the Pit

Pit stops happen in under three seconds. The crews resemble a trauma surgical unit more than a garage team. Each movement is rehearsed, choreographed, and timed to perfection. They embody “group flow,” a psychological state where communication becomes intuitive and roles dissolve into seamless execution. Any hesitation or ego can derail performance. It’s not just about speed; it’s about working as a unit.

Fandom, Identity, and the Psychology of Spectating

F1 spectators don’t just watch—they feel. The crowd surges with adrenaline, anticipation, and tribal loyalty. Wearing team colors or chanting a favorite driver’s name isn’t superficial, it’s a form of identity affirmation. Psychologically, sports spectatorship provides a sense of belonging, catharsis, and even physiological changes due to intense emotional investment—mimicking the highs and lows of direct competition.

Staying Calm in Chaos

One veteran incident marshal, who has worked high-risk posts at international circuits including last year’s Mexican Grand Prix, recalled a moment where they narrowly avoided serious injury during a chaotic race start. Ducking quickly when a car launched off the line unexpectedly, this story highlights the importance of staying calm but vigilant. These workers on the sidelines are just as mentally strong as the drivers on the track.

What This Teaches Us

are made at over 200 mph, where delays of even 100 milliseconds can cost critical positions. Neurologically, this kind of performance is powered by lightning-fast sensorimotor processing, intense prefrontal cortex regulation, and deeply rehearsed muscle memory. Drivers must suppress panic responses while staying hyper-attuned to micro-adjustments in grip, track conditions, and physical mechanics—all while strategizing positionally.

The Calm Before the Storm

The day began with foreshadowing. A red flag late in practice brought the session to a halt after a driver clipped the wall near Turn 1. The contact was minor, but the symbolism wasn’t.

This track doesn’t tolerate hesitation. In F1, the margin of error is so slim, even a

Not everyone is a race car driver. But we all know what it’s like to work hard and still not come out on top. We all have moments where we think we’ve won— only to see things change at the last second.

This sport quickly showed me that doing your best doesn’t always mean winning. What matters is staying steady, adapting fast, and continuing forward. This was demonstrated by the F1 drivers when they returned later that day for the sprint qualifying.

SQ1: Echoes of Earlier Chaos

With just over two minutes left in the first Sprint Qualifying (SQ1) race, that same, rare phenomenon unfolded as three drivers settled in with matching lap times, locked in a dead heat at the top of the board: Lando Norris, MaxVerstappen, and Kimi Antonelli.

The leaderboard froze. Fans held their breath. And just like in practice, it came down to a final push. George Russell delivered—a lap of 1:27.6 that broke the tie and sent the rest tumbling.

SQ2: Precision Under Pressure

SQ2 saw tension rise another level. With a 1:27.3, Oscar Piastri lit up the board early, followed closely by Norris and Antonelli—again separated by mere tenths.Verstappen and Russell hovered in the mix, while Hamilton edged in at tenth with a solid final effort. In the closing seconds, Norris took the top spot. But it wasn’t by domination, it was by 0.1 seconds (s).The heartbreak wasn’t theatrical, it was clinical. It lived in the timing data, not yet in the faces of the audience.

SQ3: The Final Push

The final session delivered everything fans could’ve hoped for. Russell opened strong, posting a 1:26.7. Verstappen trailed by just 0.2s. Albon shocked many by sliding into third—momentarily.

And then came Kimi Antonelli.

The rookie driver, cool under pressure, nailed his lap: 1:26.4. Clean, fast, and unfazed with a staggering time that redefined the grid. Piastri came within 0.045s. Norris followed at 0.1s.

Final Top 10 Qualifying Results: Antonelli – 1:26.4, Piastri – +0.0s, Norris –+0.1, Verstappen – +0.2, Russell – +0.3, Leclerc – +0.3, Hamilton – +0.5, Albon – + 0.7, Hadjar – +1.0, Alonso – +1.3

What It Means

The first Italian to take the pole 1 position in Miami didn’t do it with luck. He did it with precision and poise. This is a tremendous advantage as it determines the starting grid on race day.

Antonelli showed that pressure doesn’t break everyone—sometimes, it sharpens them. And that’s the story of this qualifying day: the ones who kept calm, adapted fast, and didn’t flinch were the ones who rose.

This wasn’t chaos. It was evolution. And for anyone watching—whether you’re a driver, a student, or someone just trying to push through the unknown—it was inspiring.

Day 3: Final Race

Though Antonelli had the P1 position, he was unable to stay in the top 5 as the race took a surprising turn.We saw Norris rise quickly to the top, but suddenly he was eclipsed by none other than his McLaren teammate, Piastri with a smooth

ment. You can be flawless—and still get bumped. You can hit the exact same mark as the person ahead of you—and still land behind them.

That’s not just racing. That’s life. The real lesson echoes mental flexibility. Can you stay calm while the rankings

outcome. That’s the lesson racing gives back to the rest of us. Focus only on what you can control: not the clock or the conditions, but your actions and most importantly, your mind.

In a world ruled by uncertainty and time is unforgiving, resilience is the only way to keep driving forward. Mind over

milliseconds isn’t just a racing principle.
