A Friendship for the ages ‘RON’S GONE WRONG’ IS SURE TO CONNECT WITH AUDIENCES For the past five years, English filmmaker Sarah Smith (“Arthur Christmas”) has been working hard on Locksmith Animation’s first feature film, “Ron’s Gone Wrong.” The hilarious and heartwarming tale of a socially awkward middle schooler named Barney (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, “Luca”) and his malfunctioning robot, Ron (voiced by Zach Galifianakis, “The Hangover”), the movie hits theaters on Oct. 22. Sunseeker caught up with Smith, who not only co-founded Locksmith Animation, but also executive produced, wrote and directed “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” to talk about the film and its important message.

RON’S GONE WRONG

ONLY IN THEATERS

Where did the idea for the story come from? The idea first stirred when I watched the Spike Jonze film, “Her.” I just thought we [Smith and her longtime friend Peter Caynham, who co-wrote “Ron’s Gone Wrong” with her] had to make a film like that for kids. I was very aware of my 4-year-old entering the world of iPads, etc., and not having any awareness of the bigger world, agenda or voices behind what she was watching. Pete and I both had the experience of seeing our kids grapple with friendship issues — that feeling we’ve all had as a kid, and adult, that everyone else at the party has friends to talk to except you. That pressure becomes so much more complicated when you add social media. Suddenly, you have this brilliant tool for meeting people you have things in common with, yet you end up worrying even more about being on the outside. So, we wanted to find a way to show, basically, an animated iPad that is sold as “your best friend out of the box,” and the B*Bot was born! What makes “Ron’s Gone Wrong” such a great back-to-school movie for kids to enjoy? One of the key images in the movie is Barney standing on the edge of the schoolyard, staring out at every other kid who appears to him confident and socially sorted (because they all have B*Bots). I think every kid has that experience at some point. But Ron changes all that for Barney because he teaches him he’s worthy of friendship and shows him that all the others are going through the same stuff.

Continued

SUNSEEKER

7

8

It’s also just a heap of fun. It shows what happens when the socially awkward kid brings this crazy, unafraid, broken bot to school that just wants to rush around making friends with everyone. Without giving away too much, Ron triggers a huge chaotic bit of mad hilarity in the school in which every rule is broken — it’s every kid’s wish fulfilment!

Were you at all awkward in middle school like Barney? If so, would you have loved to have had something like a B*Bot by your side? Wasn’t everyone? It’s a nightmare of selfconsciousness! A B*Bot would have been awesome — a brilliant alternative to having to be funny and charismatic to other kids!

The movie has a great cast. What did the main actors bring to their respective roles? Jack is one of the most versatile voice actors I’ve ever worked with. He gives six different versions of every line, and he can make you cry in a heartbeat. Zach, meanwhile, is a comedy genius who totally got the helpful deadpan of Ron with just a hint of cheek! Ed Helms is a brilliant improviser. He’s so warm as Barney’s dad but also gave us reams of hilarious additional material and alternative lines that make his character so alive and real. Then there was Olivia Colman, dancing up and down to Bulgarian songs. They were such a lovely, generous cast to work with.

If you had one electronic device you’d consider “your best friend out of the box” today, what would it be? Gotta be my iPhone — is it possible to live without them?

SUNSEEKER

What message do you hope viewers take away from the film? Things may be tough today, but you will find friends. And they don’t have to be anything like you, or agree with you or like the same things as you. It will be more fun if they don’t — if they bicker and argue and laugh, like Pete and I do.

Each tour begins at the Al Davis Memorial Torch, a tribute to the Raiders’ longtime owner that stands over 9 stories tall and holds the distinction of being the world’s tallest 3D-printed structure. Guests will hear about Davis’ lasting legacy as they tour the $1.9 billion stadium, visiting places usually only open to invited guests, like the broadcast booth, the press conference room and MGM Resorts’ private suite. Along the way, visitors will pass by stunning works of art that pay tribute to both the Raiders and Las Vegas. More than 400 curated pieces are on display, many of which are found on Allegiant Stadium’s suite level. Highlights include paintings by Michael Godard of Elvis Presley wearing a Raiders jersey and Marilyn Monroe dressed as a Raiderette. Guests will also get to step inside the Raiders’ and Raiderettes’ locker rooms to see where they get ready for a game. There’s even an exhibit detailing the Raiderettes’ history in their locker room that showcases the cheerleaders’ uniforms throughout the years. Additionally, an inspirational surprise awaits guests in the Raiders’ locker room that will have visitors feeling like they are about to step onto the football field themselves. While most tours do

A VACATION DESTINATION RICH WITH ADVENTURE Go beyond Las Vegas’ city lights with Pink Adventure Tours

Story By Heather Turk

One of the best ways to explore the area is with Pink Adventure Tours. The company offers informative guided tours of some of Southern Nevada’s most popular outdoor attractions, including Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon. Round-trip transportation is included from most Las Vegas resorts, so tourists don’t have to worry about renting a car.

For a truly unique experience, visitors can step back in time with Pink Adventure Tours’ Eldorado Canyon Gold Mine Tour. The 4-hour excursion takes guests past the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town of Nelson, Nevada, to one of the state’s richest gold mines that operated from 1861 until 1942: Eldorado Canyon’s Techatticup Mine. Guests will not only get to enter the once-thriving mine to see the gold and silver that still run in its quartz veins today, but also learn about the lawlessness of Eldorado Canyon in the 1800s. Visitors will hear about the many celebrities who have shot projects in the remote area, too, and even see a plane that was blown up for the movie “3000 Miles to Graceland.” As guests travel to Eldorado Canyon, their friendly Pink Adventure Tours guide will educate them on some of the desert plants they’re driving past. Vegas visitors will be happy to learn that the city is once again living up to its reputation as the Entertainment Capital of the World thanks to the return of some of Las Vegas’ most beloved acts and the addition of several new must-see shows. Ordinary attractions are turned on their head to create unique and memorable adventures from the seemingly mundane. Lost Spirits Distillery, for instance, transfigures a standard distillery tour into a journey through a dreamscape of tasting rooms. Elaborately concocted spirits are sipped aboard a

submarine, in a candlelit forest or on a magic elevator. AREA15’s main attraction is artist collective Meow Wolf’s latest installation: Omega Mart. What looks like an ordinary supermarket is actually an interactive art exhibit that transports guests through an interdimensional story. Given a key card, patrons become employees of Omega Mart, working their way up from grocery store clerk to a spot in the corporate offices, uncovering mysteries along the way. Secret passages dot the store, hidden messages fill every room and incredible visuals dazzle and mystify. There are no ordinary bars inside of AREA15, either. Sure, Dueling Axes serves signature cocktails every night, but it also features 18 axe throwing lanes, accommodating up to six participants each. Nearby, Emporium tops its extensive drink menu with an even larger game selection. The two-story bar boasts skeeball, pinball, classic arcade games and bar mainstays, like shuffleboard, billiards and foosball.

To call Las Vegas’ newest hit attraction a playground for adults is an understatement. Delicious restaurants from James Beard Award winning chefs are kitty cornered to supernatural supermarkets stocked with secrets. Overhead, people whiz by on a zipline while, below, a distillery tour leads patrons into a submarine. At AREA15, the play is anything but grounded.

Explore a natural wonder By Teresa Bitler

HIKE AND BIKE Most South Rim visitors get their first glimpse of the canyon at Mather Point, then hike a portion of the 13-mile Rim Trail towards Yavapai. You can continue by foot to the historic Grand Canyon Village or venture below the rim a short distance on the Bright Angel Trail. (Do not try hiking to the bottom and back in one day.) Want to pedal your way along the rim instead? Rent a bicycle from Bright Angel Bicycles, the park’s only authorized concessioner, and explore from Yaki Point to Hermits Rest. bikegrandcanyon.com TAKE TO THE AIR For a different perspective, book a helicopter or plane tour. Helicopter tours usually fly through the canyon, with some even touching down for a short time on the canyon floor, while planes provide a more panoramic view. Most flights take off from Grand Canyon National Park Airport, with some departing from Phoenix or Las Vegas.

Adrenaline junkies have another option, though — skydiving. Board a plane at the park’s airport and make a tandem jump over the canyon with Paragon Skydiving. skydivegc.com RIDE AND RAFT Hiking isn’t the only way to get to the bottom of the canyon. You can ride a sure-footed mule down the Bright Angel Trail and overnight at Phantom Ranch. Rather stay on the rim? Reserve a spot on the Canyon Vista ride instead. Although rafting trips technically start outside the park near Page, Arizona, most float on the Colorado River as it passes below the South Rim. Raft trips usually book months in advance, so if you want to go, plan early. For more information on activities at the South Rim, visit the national park website. nps.gov/grca

Mesa’s massive changes

By Kate Wallace

Downtown Mesa is the Valley of the Sun’s newest urban hotspot, with restaurants, breweries, retail shops and a two-acre public gathering space, the Plaza at Mesa City Center, set to welcome guests later this year. Main Street’s epic transformation is in large part due to the new digital and visual arts campus, ASU @ Mesa City Center. The three-story building will offer numerous collaborative spaces with a large exhibition gallery, screening theaters and a social café, as well as a mix of production studios, fabrication labs and innovative spaces for collaborations with community and industry. The campus will also house The Sidney Poitier New American Film School. Downtown Mesa can soon proclaim they have the state’s largest collection of craft breweries within walking distance of one another. Mesa’s craft beverage scene has been years in the making with Desert Eagle 36

SUNSEEKER

Brewing Company and Cider Corps setting up shop years ago and expanding their spaces to include outside dining. The area recently welcomed 12 West Brewing Co. and Oro Brewing Company to its main drag. More breweries and taprooms were announced including Mesa original’s B.R.I. Beer Research Institute. Their second Mesa site will take the shape of an old school arcade and taproom. Pedal Haus Brewery’s first Mesa location has a 6,000-square-foot, pet-friendly patio and indoor/ outdoor brewpub designed around entertainment and live music. This location also features their popular Belgian-American gastropub menu. Sidewalk surfers also have a collection of new throwback shops to explore including Sonoran Moon Vintage, Buckhorn Vintage and The Boutique. Oneof-a-kind clothing, rare furniture finds and timeless housewares are part of the treasure hunting fun up and down Main Street.

Dining al fresco is now an option at nearly all downtown Mesa restaurants and taprooms

Come hungry, as more and more restaurants will take on a Main Street address. Memphisbased Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken opened their first Arizona location last year, and Hope’s Fry Bread, named after Diné chef Hope Peshlakai, will soon bring a taste of authentic Navajo cuisine to the area. Sourdough bread master John Przybyl has big plans in store for Proof Bread. The Main Street bakery is gearing up to host bread-making classes, and it features a stunning view-through space inviting onlookers to watch the baking process as it happens. Phoenix hikes worth every step

By Teresa Bitler

The Valley boasts some of the best trails in the Southwest. In fact, National Geographic named the Greater Phoenix area one of the top 15 hiking cities in the nation, and with iconic hikes like Camelback Mountain, it’s well deserved. Although some local hikes are challenging, nearby alternatives offer a similar experience with less exertion. CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN Two trails take you to the summit of Camelback Mountain: Echo Canyon and Cholla. Both are

extremely challenging, but the more popular Echo Canyon Trail is shorter and somewhat steeper, ascending 1,400 feet in just over a mile. Either way, the strenuous climb rewards with panoramic views of the city from an elevation of 2,704 feet above sea level. phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations/ camelback-mountain For a similar but slightly less challenging hike, there’s nearby Piestewa Peak. The 3.7-mile Freedom Trail loops around the entire mountain, offering views of the city below, while the out-and-back Summit Trail climbs 1,200 feet to Instagram-worthy panoramas and views of wildflowers in the spring. phoenix.gov/ parks/trails/locations/piestewa-peak/hiking-trail-map THE NATIONAL TRAIL Located in South Mountain Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, the National Trail runs 14.3 miles along the Guadalupe and Gila mountain ranges. Highlights along the way include the Natural Tunnel, Buena Vista Lookout and Fat Man’s Pass, where hikers squeeze between two boulders to continue on the trail. You can access the National Trail at several points, but if you’re unfamiliar with local streets, use the park’s main entrance. From there, take the 2.5-mile Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout for a panoramic look at the city. Then, continue to the National

PALM & CIRCUMSTANCE

By Connor McIlveen

Under a canopy of palms, nestled in the Coachella Valley, there is a gallery of sorts, hosting the works of many architectural icons, whose modernist masterpieces dot the land. And twice a year, this gallery opens its doors to outsiders, allowing them unprecedented access to the architectural marvels showcased within its borders. It’s Modernism Week in Palm Springs.

Modernism Week in Palm Springs Miralon Pool, one of many event locations during Fall Preview Week

Modernism Week is a two week festival that takes place every February in Palm Springs. The celebration features more than 350 events, including the Modernism Show & Sale, Signature Home Tours, films, lectures, bus tours, nightly parties, live music, classic cars, modern garden tours and a vintage travel trailer exhibition. Each of the many events is dedicated to celebrating midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture. Architecture enthusiasts and antiquarians alike don midcentury clothing, cruise about in classic cars and walk the grounds of several Modernist estates for an indepth look at private residences which would be otherwise inaccessible. While tickets for Modernism Week go on sale in November, those hoping for early access will be delighted to find that, in addition to the signature February event, Modernism Week also hosts a Modernism Week Fall Preview.

More than 350 events, including the Modernism Show & Sale, are hosted during Modernism Week

The Fall Preview is a specially designed “mini-Modernism Week” with over 50 events pulled from and inspired by February’s Modernism Week. Partner organizations for the festival come together to craft a unique experience all to kick off the social season of the desert oasis. The 2021 Modernism Week Fall Preview will take place October 14-17 and will feature both new events and returning favorites from February’s festival. Ticket holders will have access to architectural walking tours of unique locations, in person talks and panels on the art and architecture of the area, and parties in locations that are rarely open to the public. The Fall Preview will also include the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale Fall Edition, a shopping experience featuring 45 premier national and international decorative and fine arts dealers presenting vintage 20th century furniture, decorations and fine arts, as well as contemporary designs inspired by the midcentury style. The Show & Sale starts with an opening night preview party on Oct. 14, offering attendees a cocktail reception, live music and an exclusive first chance to shop at the show before it opens to the public. The popular “Cul-de-Sac Experience” will also return this fall with even more retroinspired activities and tours, all of which are perfectly designed to showcase the beauty and artistry that went into crafting the midcentury modern mecca that is Palm Springs. Tickets for Modernism Week Fall Preview are available starting August 1, 2021 at noon. modernismweek.com

Adventure off the California coast

By Connor McIlveen

While a day trip to Catalina is possible, stunning hotels like Hotel Atwater and Pavilion Hotel lure visitors into an overnight stay. Pavilion entices guests with stunning ocean views and a location only 14 steps away from the beach, while Hotel Atwater’s new renovations add an alluring aura to the historic 1920s resort. Though hotels provide luxurious relaxation, the island is also home to rugged adventure. Bison Expeditions transports guests in open air, biofuel Hummers to the grazing grounds of a herd of over 100 bison that call the island’s outback home. For two hours, guests are taken through the wild landscape to view the animals in a unique habitat. Catalina Aerial Adventure provides those still seeking thrills with a chance to climb, swing and crawl through a series of challenging obstacles. The courses are selfguided and made up of rope 44

Glass Bottom Boat Voyage takes travelers into Lovers’ Cove State Marine Conservation Area to view aquatic amazements under the ocean. Meanwhile, Sealife Safari explores the Catalina Channel, treating passengers to views of dolphins and sea lions in their natural habitat. Campgrounds dot the island, and a few of them provide access to the Trans-Catalina Trail. WINERIES

SO CAL

EXCELLENCE IN A GLASS DAOU Vineyard & Winery creates some of California’s best wines

Some of California’s best wines aren’t produced in Napa or Sonoma; they’re from DAOU Vineyard & Winery in Paso Robles. Over the past decade, DAOU wines have been awarded scores of 90+ points more than 200 times. Georges Daou attributes the winery’s success to a passion kindled when he and his brother, Daniel, were boys in France. “My dad loved wines,” he said. “In Paris, he’d always bring home bottles of Chenin Blanc, and we saw the fruits of wine, how it created a sense of community. We decided this was a lifestyle we wanted for ourselves.” But it wasn’t a life the Lebanese-born brothers could pursue right away. Instead, they founded DAOU Systems, a company that specialized in hospital networking technology and, eventually, sold it in 1998. But, they never lost their passion for wine. Daniel spent years growing Cabernet Sauvignon on a 1-acre plot and making wine in his garage. Now, with money from the sale of DAOU Systems in hand, they just needed to find the right property to start a winery. They found it in Paso Robles. According to Georges, when they bought the property it was just dirt, but it had promise. One of the 46

most influential postprohibition winemakers, André Tchelistcheff, singled it out as having the potential to produce extraordinary wines. Their dirt plot has since far exceeded their expectations. Today, it produces some of California’s best Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties. “We are a lot more than that first sip,” says Georges. He recommends that if you enjoy what you drink on your flight, you purchase a bottle of Soul of the Lion when you get home. Or, come visit.

CARES

Allegiant returns to making dreams come true

Allegiant is built around the idea that travel should be accessible to everyone. That philosophy is at the heart of our national partnership with Make-A-Wish®, the nonprofit organization dedicated to granting the wishes of children facing critical illnesses. Wishes not only help hope and joy to shine through the toughest of circumstances, but can also make a real difference in improving health outcomes for many children. About 77 percent of those wishes involve travel, and since 2012 Allegiant has provided free, nonstop flights for nearly 2,000 wish kids and their families to reach dream destinations across the country — from Florida and California theme parks to sports events, concerts and celebrations in New York and Las Vegas. We’ve also been honored to help design and host special wishes, including a visit to Allegiant’s west coast training center, where prospective pilot Eric flew a full-motion professional flight simulator, and where honorary flight attendant, 5 year-old SJ, handed out snacks to his fellow passengers during his wish trip to Orlando. When the pandemic delayed the fulfillment of wishes involving air travel, Allegiant team members stepped in to help fill the void. Pilots and flight attendants delivered messages of hope and gifts of encouragement to the homes of wish kids in Las Vegas. Administrative staff helped with a functional and beautiful bedroom makeover for 9 year-old wish kid Annay. And, across the country, hundreds

of team members participated in “virtual” walks and fundraisers during this most unusual year. This fall, our team will once again welcome wish kids on board Allegiant flights as they resume travel to fulfill their wishes. You, too, can help support MakeA-Wish and their important mission during your flight. For every purchase of a specially-branded Wingz Kids Snack Pack, Allegiant will donate $1 toward making even more wishes come true. Plane spotters should also keep an eye out for Allegiant’s one-of-a-kind Make-A-Wish livery aircraft — a symbol of our team’s dedication to this hopeful, life-changing cause, and to keeping travel accessible for all. Go to allegiant.com/make-wish for more information about Allegiant’s proud partnership with Make-A-Wish. Visit wish.org to find out how you can get involved with Make-A-Wish in your home community.

As part of that recognition program, our Customer Experience Leadership Team (CELT) specifically honors those who have worked hard to improve our customers’ overall experience, naming them our CX (Customer Experience) Celebrities. Here are some examples of their dedication and passion to our customers and each other: “Corrine (Stations Manager, MFR) personally delivered a bag to a customer who was traveling for a funeral.” “CVG Team Members Tracy, Ryan, Chris and Maurice stepped up to assist with last minute charters on a day off when there were no other flights planned. This type of spirit and teamwork will pull us through these difficult days.” “Several of my coworkers and I had the recent pleasure of traveling on a flight that Captain Acoba (LAS) was in

command of. Before the main cabin door was closed, Captain Acoba came out of the flight deck and introduced himself from the forward galley and thanked everyone for coming out and flying.” “While flying home from vacation, Karl (Line MX Inspector, SFB) heard a gate announcement that the flight would be delayed due to a maintenance problem. He proceeded over to the gate and identified himself as a Maintenance Team Member and asked if he could be of assistance.” Although this year we were unable to continue our tradition of an in-person celebration, we look forward to bringing these Team Members together next year Congratulations to our 2020 CX Celebrities: Annette Ingleston, Flight Attendant (PGD) Tycho Sanders, Captain (PIE) Nathan Chester, Captain (PIT) Corrine Schuur, Station Manager (RFD) Chance Bird, CSA/GOA (BOI) Tracy Kleinhenz, Area Manager Stations (CVG) Maurice Rogers, Reg. TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats
