THE FORCE GROWS STRONGER

Cosmic new adventures await Star Wars’ fans at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Stormtroopers stand guard at the entrance to Star Wars Launch Bay, a multi-sensory space where guests can interact with Star Wars characters; view costumes, droids, artwork and large-scale artifacts from past

movies; play interactive video games; and shop for Star Wars merchandise. At the reimagined Jedi Training Academy, kids can test their true Jedi skills as they train to face villains such as Darth Vader. The experience culminates with a dazzling nighttime fireworks show, "Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular," set to Star Wars' music.

"RIVERS OF LIGHT" NIGHTTIME SHOW

In the first-ever nighttime show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Discovery River comes to life with magical fireflies, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery in the "Rivers of Light" spectacular. Winter is the star attraction at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

WINTER’S GALLERY OF HOPE CLEARWATER MARINE AQUARIUM’S TOUCHING NEW EXHIBIT By Marcia Biggs

S

oon after the feature film Dolphin Tale was released nationwide in 2011, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) realized they had a major movie star on their hands. Winter had been found six years earlier stranded and entangled in a crab trap line, which cut off circulation to her tail flukes. She was transported to the aquarium for treatment, however, her tail could not be saved. Dolphin Tale is Winter’s story of recovery and rehabilitation. Winter played herself in Dolphin Tale, alongside Hollywood stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Harry Connick, Jr. and Kris Kristofferson. It was not long before emails and letters came flooding in. Families from around the world arrived at the aquarium—

many with children who had likewise lost limbs or suffered from debilitating diseases that left them in wheelchairs. Winter’s tale was their tale. Just minutes from CMA in downtown Clearwater, Winter’s Dolphin Tale Adventure is a 32,000-square-foot attraction that pays tribute to the beloved dolphin. Visitors will find re-built sets and props used in the filming of the movie, including the lab where scientists worked to create Winter’s prosthetic tail, the first of its kind in the world. A touching new exhibit, Winter’s Gallery of Hope shows just how powerful and inspiring Winter’s story has become globally. More than 150 items are on display, a mere fraction of the thousands of mailings the aquarium has received since the release of Dolphin Tale. There are photos of children and adults with missing limbs interacting with Winter, colorful paintings made with a child’s touch, letters both scribbled and typed (even one in Braille), all sharing memories and gratitude for encounters with Winter that changed lives. “Our Inspire program welcomes people of all ages to come for a visit,” said Becca Romzek, the head of outreach at CMA. “Send us your story to inspire@cmaquarium.org and when you plan to visit and we’ll try to orchestrate a meeting with Winter.” Today, Winter is thriving at CMA where she can be seen most days during her regular exercise program. She is joined by two other rehabilitated dolphins, Nicholas and Hope, along with injured otters, sea turtles and other marine life. Dolphin Tale 2, a sequel featuring the story of Hope, was released in January 2014.

Beach Drive is also home to some of Florida’s most delightful dining and drinking establishments, like The Canopy rooftop lounge. Perched atop The Birchwood hotel, guests can indulge in invigorating libations like the Michter’s Coco Rock (Michter’s Small Batch Bourbon with a toasted coconut ice cube) and tantalizing light fare while enjoying unobstructed views of Tampa Bay, Straub Park, Beach Drive and the downtown St. Petersburg skyline. Private cabanas are available and there are fire pits to warm up by during those “cold” winter nights. Another popular drinking and dining spot is 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House, with indoor and outdoor dining, overlooking Straub Park and The Vinoy hotel yacht basin. Guests can experience award-winning coastal cuisine by chef Ana Granucci while enjoying a selection from the restaurant’s extensive wine list, which offers 40 wines by the glass or one of 24 draft beers. Other delightful options with mouthwatering fare include Annata, a relaxed restaurant and wine bar situated on the scenic waterfront of Straub Park, and the popular Italian eatery Bella Brava. Of course, this is just a taste of what Beach Drive has to offer. For more information, go to stpete.org/portal-things-to-do.php.

BONITA SPRINGS

Visitors can get up close to a flock of flamingos

EXPERIENCE THE WONDER EXPLORE FLORIDA’S EVERGLADES WONDER GARDENS By Heather Turk

A

llegiant passengers visiting the Lee County area during their Florida vacation can experience the wonder of old Florida at one of the state’s original roadside attractions: Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs. This historic attraction, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in February 2016, recently reopened under new ownership and with a refreshed look. Visitors can explore the 3.5-acre botanical jungle, which is home to native trees and plants as well as rescued birds and reptiles, while learning about the flora and fauna of Florida. Each guest’s journey begins inside the Natural History Museum, which showcases specimens collected by the attraction’s original founders, brothers Bill and Lester Piper. Originally established in 1936 as The Reptile Gardens, where visitors could marvel at the wildlife wonders of Southwest Florida, the attraction was renamed Everglades Wonder Gardens in the 1940s as the animal and botanical exhibits continued to grow.

Photos by John Brady

What started as a collection of trees native to Southwest Florida as well as the Caribbean and South America has blossomed into a lush botanical jungle. Orchids, bamboos, bromeliads and other specimens serve as a backdrop to the many exotic birds and reptiles that call Everglades Wonder Gardens home. Visitors will see flamingos, snakes, tortoises, chickens, a koi pond and even a beautiful butterfly garden while wandering down the recently cleared pathways. There’s also a swinging bridge guests can walk on that overlooks a pool of alligators! An on-site gallery features art from landscape photographer John Brady, who took over the management of Everglades Wonder Gardens from 2013 to July 2015 and currently serves as the operations consultant. Additionally, there’s a gift shop filled with Everglades Wonder Gardensthemed items, including special 80th anniversary souvenirs only available throughout 2016.

Everglades Wonder Gardens is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is only $12 for adults, $10 for seniors ages 65 and older and $7 for children ages 3 to 12; kids younger than 3 are free. For an additional $5, guests can go gator fishing on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and use a bamboo pole to feed the attraction’s adult alligators a hot dog! here’s more for families to enjoy in Sarasota than just its beautiful beaches. The area is home to several kid-friendly attractions, so families will have plenty of things to do together during their Florida vacation.

BIG CAT HABITAT AND GULF COAST SANCTUARY Families can get up close to more than 100 exotic and petting zoo animals at this nonprofit sanctuary, including lions, tigers, camels and a 5-year-old, 1,100-pound liger named Brutus. Educational animal demonstrations are held in the arena each afternoon, and guests have the opportunity to feed meat and other treats to select big cats and bears during their visit. Guests can also take a “walk on the wild side” between the old and new animal enclosures for photos of the big cats lounging and playing around, or stop by the petting zoo where they can interact with emus, llamas and a variety of other animals. While you’re at the sanctuary, be sure to take your little monkey to the new Marmoset Mansion, which houses three marmosets and a spider monkey. bigcathabitat.org

donated or rescued from the wild, guests will see everything from prairie dogs to a flock of freeroaming flamingos. In fact, it isn’t uncommon to see the beautiful pink birds nibbling food out of guests’ hands! Daily animal shows, where guests can pet a skunk, learn the difference between an alligator and a crocodile or see a parrot riding roller skates, are showcased as well. ESCAPE TO MAGICAL SANIBEL AND CAPTIVA ISLANDS FLORIDA’S MARVELOUS MECCA FOR SHELLING By Gabriele Walkow

famous for their sunsets. In-between, find familyfriendly sandy playgrounds and long stretches of unpopulated sands including Sanibel’s popular Bowman’s Beach, particularly known for its fine selection of shells. The shelling is so rich on these islands that many visitors seek out local shelling guides or choose to go on a shelling and beaching cruise. Sanibel’s Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, the only museum in North America dedicated entirely to shells, is a must-do before or after shelling.

Travel+Leisure placed Sanibel #3 on the 10 Best U.S. Shelling Beaches and Captiva Island #20 in a listing of the World’s Best Island Beaches. Known for the Sanibel Stoop and Captiva Crouch shelling postures, these two islands are a mecca for those seeking seashells. The amazing inventory of over 250 different varieties of pastel seashells includes horse conchs, calico scallops, banded tulips, coquinas, whelks, corkscrew-shaped augers, the rare lion’s paw and the rarer, prized brownspeckled junonia shell.

The islands’ marinas offer ample opportunity to get out on the water for fishing, sailing, snorkeling and learning about the area’s incredible marine life. Many resorts and outfitters stock kayaks, sailboats, paddleboats and an assortment of water toys. Between the two islands, visitors can find ample accommodation—from intimate inns and cottages to grand destination resorts—to suit their needs. And from cozy cafes to waterfront elegance, the delectable dining will more than satisfy hungry appetites after a day spent outdoors.

The seashell bejeweled beaches span from the pristine sands at Lighthouse Beach Park (home to the historic light tower and popular fishing pier) at one end of Sanibel to Captiva’s romantic beaches

With buildings no taller than the tallest palm tree, Sanibel and Captiva are the perfect place to reconnect with your island self! For more information, visit fortmyers-sanibel.com.

he beautiful and secluded Gulf of Mexico barrier islands of Sanibel and Captiva welcome visitors to a different pace of life—the leisurely pace of island life. hile Asheville, N.C., is famous for its craft beers, an area just 30 minutes south is making a name for itself in the hard cider industry. The Hendersonville area, long known for its orchards, is the largest apple-producing county in North Carolina and the seventh largest in the nation, thus making it a natural home for an emerging hard cider business. Hard cider, which is growing in popularity as an adult beverage, is sweeter than beer, less potent than wine and capable of complex flavors. A visit to the Hendersonville area offers Allegiant travelers the opportunity to learn how hard cider is made and sample a variety of locally produced ciders.

FAMILY FUN IN THE QUEEN CITY FINDING FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY IN CINCINNATI By Justin Ralenkotter

S

ituated on the banks of the Ohio River at the intersection of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Cincinnati has long been a crossroads town and gateway to the old West. In recent years, however, the city has received national praise as one of the most livable, affordable and family-friendly cities in the country. With nationally-recognized museums and professional sports teams, there’s no shortage of fun for the whole family in the city affectionately dubbed the “Queen City.”

CINCINNATI MUSEUM AT UNION TERMINAL

Cincinnati’s Union Terminal was built in the 1930’s as a rail hub and is considered an art deco masterpiece. Today, Union Terminal now houses the Cincinnati Museum Center

which includes three museums: the Museum of Natural History and Science, the Cincinnati History Museum and the Duke Energy Children’s Museum. Over the holiday season, the Museum Center plays host to one of the largest model train displays in the world. Open from Nov. 6 through Jan. 3, the Duke Energy Holiday Trains display has been a beloved local tradition for families since 1946. Visit cincymuseum.org for ticket and exhibit information.

CINCINNATI ZOO & BOTANICAL GARDEN

The world-renown Cincinnati Zoo was established in 1873, making it the second-oldest zoo in the United States. Over the last 140 years, the zoo has grown to include over 500 animal and 3,000 plant species and has been named one of the best zoos for kids by Child Magazine. In the winter months, the zoo and gardens sparkle with over two million LED lights for the annual PNC Festival of Lights from Nov. 19 through Jan. 1. From the Elephant Reserve to Manatee Springs to Monkey Island, the Cincinnati Zoo offers something for animal lovers of all stripes! Visit cincinnatizoo.com

CINCINNATI REDS

No trip to Cincinnati would be complete without cheering on the Queen City’s Reds baseball team. Located on the riverfront at the Great American Ballpark, the Cincinnati Reds are credited with being the first professional baseball team and have been a Cincinnati institution for over 100 years. Home games in the spring and summer at Great American Ballpark offer plenty of exciting activities for the kids, or pay a visit to the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, also at the park and open year-round. Visit cincinnati.reds.mlb.com for ticket packages and games schedules.

You see them and interact with them when you fly, but you may not realize just how much our stations team members do to make sure our operations run smoothly. Station agents are responsible for providing exceptional customer service while checking in passengers, boarding planes, assigning seats and loading bags. They’re also responsible for ground operations, aircraft cleaning and safety and security. In short, it’s their work that helps keep us going. With the goal to reach more than 100 cities, Allegiant team members, including managers and executives, hopped on hundreds of flights and stationed themselves at airports around the country to surprise thousands of our agents. They handed out goodie bags to all team members and expressed their appreciation to those who are constantly working behind the scenes and on the front lines for you, our travelers, and the rest of the Allegiant team.

Our stations team in Santa Maria got a surprise visit

“It was really important for us to recognize our stations teams. We know these surprise visits were just a small token of appreciation, but we want them to know we are so grateful for their continuous dedication,” said Keny Wilper, vice president of stations operations for Allegiant. “This was also a great opportunity for our team members from all departments across the system to experience and celebrate the daily effort that goes into each flight.” Even though September may be over, we continuously thank them as we could not 54
