While most people across the country are heading indoors to escape the cold in December and January, the mild weather in Jacksonville beckons visitors to explore the Northeastern Florida destination all year long.

The dining scene in Sanford continues to thrive thanks to several recent culinary additions that are sure to leave taste buds salivating for more.

HENRY’S DEPOT Opening late fall/early winter, this flavorful spot in downtown Sanford is located in an old train depot on First Street that was originally the depot for one of the state’s first railroads in the late 1800s. Visitors can dine at an array of tasty tenants like the Twisted Greek gyro shack and Salvatore’s Prime Sandwiches, the latter of which serves a selection of impeccable Italian sandwiches. Other enticing eateries on site include the gourmet, wood-fired pizzeria Grain & Ember and the Southern-style vegan restaurant Dixie Dharma, which is already a foodie favorite in Orlando thanks to its healthy comfort food and barbecue dishes. In addition to its four restaurants, there is an Old Florida-themed bar, The Basin, that adults can enjoy a craft cocktail or local beer at while listening to live music. Showcasing chef-driven cuisine inspired by the Sun Belt, the mouthwatering dinner menu celebrates various cultures across the Southeastern and Southwestern parts of the United States. Signature selections include the fire-grilled Jail Bird Chicken and the Sunshine State Cioppino made with mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp, mahi-mahi, tomato broth, fennel and house-made pasta. Whether you’re celebrating your own traditions or honoring someone else’s, traditions are an important part of the holiday season. Therefore, Allegiant passengers visiting Punta Gorda/ Englewood Beach this December should make time to experience one of the area’s most beloved holiday traditions by booking a Christmas Light Canal Cruise with King Fisher Fleet.

For nearly 50 years, Punta Gorda’s residential canals have showcased the community’s unique display of Christmas spirit by having its homes, boats, seawalls and docks decorated in lights and other merry décor. To see the festive displays, Punta Gorda Isles, Inc.—the developer of the Punta Gorda Isles subdivision—started running Christmas canal cruises around 1970 aboard a small passenger boat it was using to promote its newly created waterfront neighborhoods. Over the years, residents began touring the canals in boats of their own. The holiday lights were such a draw that the canals ended up welcoming hundreds of private boats every December!

In 1983, local boat excursion company King Fisher Fleet decided those who don’t own their own boats should be able to share in the magical holiday experience, too, so it began offering its own Christmas Light Canal Cruises to the public. Running from Dec. 1 through 31 with three departure times nightly—6, 7:30 and 9 p.m.—the popular one-hour cruises take place on multiple boats ranging from 40 to 65 feet in length. General admission for adults costs $20, with tickets for children ages 3 to 11 priced at $10 (children younger than 3 are free). Group pricing is also available for groups of 15 or more adults, with each passenger costing just $18.

Private Christmas Light Canal Cruises are available for $165 aboard King Fisher Fleet’s cabin cruiser, Island Girl. Able to accommodate up to six passengers, the 35-foot-long boat is ideal for families looking for a more intimate holiday experience.

While the Christmas Light Canal Cruises keep King Fisher Fleet busy throughout the month of December, the family-run business at Fishermen’s Village continues to offer its other year-round sightseeing cruises and fishing charters, too. Popular excursions include its 90-minute Harbor Tour, where passengers search for dolphins and other wildlife, and its Back Bay Fishing Charter, where anglers fish in the Charlotte Harbor Aquatic Preserve. Like the Christmas Light Canal Cruises, advance reservations are required.

BLANCHARD HOUSE MUSEUM Housed in a home built in 1925 for steamboat pilot Joseph Blanchard and his mail-order bride Minnie, this museum shares the “untold and untaught” history of African Americans in Charlotte County. Re-opened in February 2006 after Hurricane Charley hit in August 2004, its permanent exhibit room features artifacts and materials dedicated to the history of Charlotte County’s African-American pioneers, their work life until the late 1960s and more. There’s also an exhibit room that features temporary seasonal exhibitions, such as “African Roots of Southern Cooking,” which is currently on display. blanchardhousemuseum.org HISTORY PARK Run by the Punta Gorda Historical Society, this outdoor museum showcases a collection of relocated historical structures in a beautiful garden setting. Among the buildings on display is the Trabue Land Sales Office, which was built by Col. Isaac Trabue in 1886 as his law 2 6 ▪ r ec r e at i o n

and land sales office, and later operated as the city’s first post office and the original town jail. Visitors can learn about the buildings on a self-guided tour with their smartphone or enter them on a volunteer docent-led tour. historyparkmarket.com MILITARY HERITAGE MUSEUM Currently located at Fishermen’s Village with plans to move into a larger building two blocks away by the beginning of March 2019, this museum tells the stories and impact of the men and women who served in all five U.S. military service branches across nearly four centuries. Not only will visitors find more than 10,000 artifacts on display—some from local residents who donated items from family members who served—but the new location will also feature an exhibit dedicated to the Punta Gorda Army Air Field. Founded in 1884, the city of Punta Gorda is rich with history. Briefly named Trabue after its founder, Kentucky attorney Col. Isaac Trabue, purchased 30 acres from a homesteader to start his own town, the Charlotte County city began to thrive in 1886 when the railroad came to town. It later contributed to the United States’ victory during World War II by training pilots at Punta Gorda Army Air Field. After the war, new subdivisions drew retirees from the north attracted to the city’s warm weather and bountiful fishing opportunities. Visitors can learn more about the scenic Southwest Florida destination at several local museums during their Allegiant getaway.

In September, North Dakota’s Grand Forks International Airport held its first-ever Wings for All program. The event is an airport “rehearsal” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities and their families. Participants go to an airport and practice making their way through security and the terminal before boarding a plane.

A few weeks later, a similar event was held in Missouri at Springfield-Branson National Airport.

For Allegiant, the event in Springfield was the ninth of the year it hosted along with The Arc, an organization advocating for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

But for the communities in North Dakota and Missouri, these were their first.

Traditionally, those living in smaller cities like Grand Forks and Springfield have difficulty accessing the same programs and support like those who live in larger metropolitan areas.

“Areas like Grand Forks are more rural. The airports are smaller. There are less flights. There is less traffic. So, it’s harder to get a plane there,” said Kerry Mauger, manager of special projects at The Arc. “We had someone come from 90 miles away just to attend the event [in North Dakota].

That was their closest airport.”

Wings for Autism/Wings for All also gives the airport, airline and TSA professionals the opportunity to receive hands-on experience as they learn how to handle certain situations and provide the best ways to support and help families with autism and other intellectual disabilities who travel.

The challenges of autism vary from person to person, as the spectrum is wide. As a whole, it’s common for those who are autistic, or someone with a similar disability, to suffer from a sensitivity to loud noises, confined spaces, crowds and even just a break from the normal routine. Wings for All provides families the opportunity to not only practice handling the challenges of air travel but also to see if they’re ready for it.

“I think this experience really helps families figure out if air travel is something they can actually do in the near future or if they need more practice,” Mauger said.

Allegiant has hosted 23 Wings for Autism/Wings for All events since partnering with The Arc.

But Allegiant is in the unique position to provide support to organizations like The Arc and those who live in less populated areas of the country because most of its routes originate from smaller airports.

Kelsey Baez likes to keep busy. When she’s not managing Allegiant’s World Mastercard program, you can usually find her out on a run or jet-setting around the globe.

We caught up with Kelsey to discuss her latest project, latest travels and latest additions to her family.

We know you currently manage Allegiant’s credit card program, but word is you’re working on something special. Can you give us a teaser?

I’m developing our new loyalty program, which we expect to launch sometime next year. We want to engage and thank our customers in more ways.

The goal is to keep it simple for everyone. You would earn a point per dollar, which you will be able to redeem at any of the Allegiant brands like Sunseeker Resort, G4CE, Kingsway Golf Course in Port Charlotte, Allegiant of course and any of our future partnerships. I can’t say too much about it right now, but we’re really excited about it.

What have been your favorite destinations so far?

Definitely Iceland. It was a really cool experience. We drove around the whole country and saw a lot of different landscapes and did a lot of adventuring.

I also really love Austin. I was able to fly there on Allegiant for the first time, and I’ve been back a few times since. They have a great food scene, and it’s such a fun place to visit.

We also heard you have some new additions to your household. What can you tell us?

My boyfriend and I adopted two puppies about a month apart early this year. We came across an organization in LA called the Dove Project that rescues dogs in South Korea. That’s how we found Mika, a Korean Jindo, who was about 3 months old when we adopted her. We couldn’t stand leaving her alone during the day and seeing her get so sad. That’s when we adopted a second puppy from the same organization, Coco. We try to take them on our travels now and then, and it’s been a lot of fun.

Have you been able to take advantage of our travel benefits?

Last year, I tracked all my flights and I flew over 75 times, so I’ve used them quite a bit (chuckle). I’ve done a few international trips now. I love to travel — it’s a big reason I got into this industry. I’ve been to Iceland, Australia and Cuba. I’m going to India this year. I’ve gotten to see a lot of this country and other countries as well.

And since my family is from Mesa, Ariz., I fly back and forth there all the time. It’s really nice to have that ability to visit my family that frequently.

SEAT BELTS

PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD

The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events.
