PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY
THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF SUNRIVER ST GEORGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Welcome April

Lifestyle Update

Did you know that the US Government has decided to change the number of days in April to extend the spring season? …April Fools! April brings April Fool’s Day, and I am sure you may recall how fun that was when you were a kid. You could get away with almost anything and cause your parents a few extra grey hairs with your April Fool’s Day pranks. It’s also funny that when I looked up the history of April Fool’s Day, there wasn’t much about its origins, but the media and major brands have helped make this holiday have a long life. Some historians speculate that April Fool’s Day dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had been moved to January 1st would continue to celebrate the New Year during the last week of March through April 1st and became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April Fools.” These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “April Fish,” which symbolized a young, easily caught fish and gullible person. In modern times, people have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fool’s Day hoaxes. Newspapers, television, radio, and websites have participated in the tradition of reporting outrageous, fictional claims which have fooled their audiences. It’s fun to see what length some will go to put their prank together. Now, what fun tricks are you going to pull this year? We want to hear about it; email SR-Events@PMPmanage.com.

Spring Events

As we welcome the spring weather and see the pretty flowers blooming while the baby birds are chirping, it officially feels like spring. Before the weather heats up is the time for outdoor activities. It’s the best time to enjoy the local hiking trails, walk around in the community (WWAD is on 4/18), take an outdoor fitness class, hit the golf course, or just eat dinner on the outdoor patio.

We are planning a new event this month, a Bourbon Street Festival Dinner and Dance. Come ready for lots of dancing, live music, and Ryan’s delicious Jambalaya. Bourbon Street is an immense street that extends thirteen blocks in the heart of the French Quarter of New Orleans. Some say Bourbon Street is the life of this party town; the street is lit with neon lights, throbbing with music, and decorated with beads and balconies. The street was named for a royal family in France, not the amber-colored alcohol, and has become a place for merriment. The party never stops on Bourbon Street, with jazz, country western, Dixieland, and blues in the air, along with lots of Cajun food options at every corner. The events team is going to try and capture this exciting vibe and bring it to the Ballroom on Tuesday, April 18th, starting at 6pm. We hope to see you there, and don’t forget to wear your decorative beads!

April also brings the dreaded Tax Day. Here we hope to help ease the pain of Tax Day by offering a special at the Poolside Café. For this one day only, Monday, April 17th, buy one, get one hamburger or cheeseburger for one-half off. Who says you can’t save money on Tax Day! We have you covered! Come sit and enjoy the east patio table and chairs and eat your lunch alfresco.

As promised, we have worked to reschedule the Star Party, and this time it will be much warmer. A huge thank you to the St. George Astronomy Club for partnering with us to make this event happen. Please note that this event will be held near the Dog Park after dark. Telescopes will be provided, but if you have your own you are encouraged to bring it. Join us and learn more about the night sky. Light snacks will also be provided. Please bring flashlights and your own lawn chairs. See you at the Dog Park on Thursday, April 20th, at 7:30pm.

With this grand weather also comes outdoor concerts. Join us on Thursday, April 6th, to dance and listen to the music of Rok Dox, and on Tuesday, April 28th, to hear the tunes of Vinyl Fusion. It is the perfect time for our Outdoor Concert Series as warmer evenings and later sunsets pair so nicely with our outdoor concerts. We are also extremely excited to announce that we are partnering with Guru’s to provide food and beverages for the concerts. This will be so convenient for the concert

2

attendees, as you can pick up dinner right at the concert venue. For our partnership in April with the Rok Dox concert, Guru’s will have a Resident special of a Hamburger with Cowboy Beans for $11.49 (please be aware this price cannot be paired with the special Resident discount). We are so excited to have this available, and we hope you will help support Gurus so we can continue to partner with them for every concert!

Annual Meeting

The Annual Members meeting will be held this month on Friday, April 14th at 9am in the Ballroom. We encourage everyone to attend either in person or via Zoom. Let us celebrate another active and successful year in SunRiver St George by gathering to enjoy Ryan’s delicious cookies and hear the Annual Report from your SRSG BOT President.

In coordination with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), we are gearing up for our annual Health and Fitness Day! Join the fitness team on Friday, April 21st, from 10am-noon in Veteran’s Honor Park. Bring your own yoga mat, sunscreen, and ample water for the outdoor morning classes. There are countless benefits to getting active, whether you are inside or outside. We are also taking advantage of the added benefits of going outside to get some sunshine and vitamin D! This will be a one-day-only event, so we hope you will join the fitness team as they try something new. Come to experience a variety of our team’s classes all in one day. Our talented instructors will be there to help new participants and continue with those resolute, long-term participants. If you have not yet participated in the fitness classes, this is a fantastic way to sample what the department has to offer. The NRPA puts on the Health & Fitness Day each year national wide to remind and encourage people to get active and focus on their health. It is empowering to take control of your activity and see the many benefits that follow.

Town Hall Meetings

You are invited to attend the first Town Hall Meeting this month. These informative meetings will be held every other month, beginning in April. This is just another way your SRSG BOT is offering additional communication and a method for disseminating valuable information to the community and providing a Q&A session. There will not be any association business discussed, and no decisions are being made; this is just to offer a venue for Residents of the community to ask questions. Come ask your SunRiver St George Board of Trustees questions or gain insight into what projects your BOT is currently working on. If you want to get the most current and accurate information, this is the perfect opportunity. See you on Friday, April 21st, at 1pm in the Ballroom.

Around The Town

The City of St. George has its annual public Neighborhood Open House event on Thursday, April 27th, from 5-7pm at the Desert Canyons Community in St. George. Enter through the gates of The Shore Resort, located at 820 W. Akoya Pearl Street. There is no formal agenda for this meeting; it has been organized to allow community members to learn more about St. George and interact with elected officials and city staff members. Mayor Randall, members of the City Council, and city departments and divisions will be there, including public works, water, energy services, leisure services, police, fire, human resources, economic development, budget, finance, and legal. The city has also stated that they will be offering

Swim Club

Before swimming, be sure to shower. Most adults would never reuse someone else’s bath water, but forty percent skip the shower before entering the swimming pool. This article is to encourage everyone to shower before going into the swimming pool. Showering before swimming helps keep swimming healthy for everyone in the pool. You should shower with soap at home before you come down to the pool. Then shower again (with no soap) at the poolside shower. A thorough shower with soap helps remove perspiration, body oils, cosmetics, and other ‘not to mention’ particles. Sending those substances down the shower drain goes a long way toward reducing the ‘yuck factor’ for everyone who shares the pool. But there is much more to consider. The pre-swim shower helps minimize the irritating, smelly substances formed in pool water when impurities introduced on the bodies of swimmers combine with chlorine. Many people identify that smell as the smell of chlorine. That stringent odor is not from chlorine, but from irritants produced when chlorine reacts with impurities. A well-managed pool has no strong chemical smell. The stronger odor of chlorine does not mean the pool is cleaner; it means more chlorine is necessary to maintain the chemical balance of the water. When swimmers shower away impurities, they help reduce the risk of waterborne illnesses such as swimmer’s ear and skin infections. Dry skin absorbs chlorinated water quickly. This water sinks deeper into the skin layers and causes further damage. A quick shower will inhibit your skin from absorbing chlorine-treated water and prevent other damage. Showering after exiting the pool is a good idea. Showering will get rid of the chlorine and any foreign agents you may have picked up from the pool. Make sure to also rinse your hair and wash your swimsuit after you swim.

Showering after you swim will keep your skin from becoming dry. You do not have to worry about picking up a germ, and you will get rid of that chlorine smell. It only takes a few minutes to shower, so make sure you make it a priority. You shower after jogging or working out in the gym - think of swimming in the same way! Just because you are in water does not mean you are not working up a sweat. Of course, all the above pertains to soaking in the Spa also.

SW Utah Restaurant Reviews

“All the news that’s fit to eat”

While cruising through St. George on I-15, it’s hard to miss the large, orange, Viva Chicken sign. Located at 1183 E. 100 S., Saint George, 435-628-8855, Viva Chicken, A Peruvian Rotisserie Joint. is one of a unique mini-chain of fifteen restaurants and the only location outside of the Carolinas. Although the menu includes soups, salads, wraps, stuffed avocados and rice bowls, the star of the show is their rotisserie chicken (which is either included in, or can be added to most other offerings).

This delicious chicken is first marinated in Peruvian spices, then cooked over charcoal, in hand-built ovens imported from Lima, Peru. It is incredibly juicy and very flavorful, but not at all spicy. Because the chicken is fresh, all-natural, hormone-free and rotisserie cooked, it is also quite healthful. You can order a half or a quarter of a bird, each of which comes with two small sides, or you can order family style; which includes a whole chicken and three large side dishes. Individual meals are made up of dark meat, but you can substitute breasts for a small extra charge.

In addition, there are three, completely different, authentic Peruvian dipping sauces, to slather on your chicken. Ranging from mild to hot, these fantastic sauces really elevate the taste of the already yummy chicken. I generally prefer the mild or medium, or even a combination of the two sauces, as I’m a bit of a “chicken” when it comes to extremely spicy things.

Side dishes include plantains, quinoa, two different types of beans, fresh fruit, chicken soup, rice, fries and sweet potato fries. The mouthwatering sweet plantains (sort of like fried banana slices), are my favorite.

All the usual soft drinks are served, but I love the fruity Peruvian juice selection, which includes three different choices. They always include a Peruvian fruit punch and another one with purple corn, cinnamon, cloves, pineapples, apples and oranges. Sounds odd, but it tastes great. Prices used to include all you could drink, but Mr. Foodie may have consumed a few too many, because now you have to pay by the glass!

A whole dinner costs from $13 (quarter chicken) to $18 (half chicken), so prices are really quite reasonable, especially for the quality and quantity of the food. The decor is contemporary and pleasant, if not fancy, and the seating is quite comfortable, with cushy booths throughout the restaurant.

Service, Panera Bread style, is both friendly and prompt. It is locally owned and, early on, the owners could often be seen bussing tables, helping servers and talking to customers. They seemed very grateful for their success locally and I’m quite grateful they opened here, in St. George.

Viva Chicken does not take reservations, but it is sizeable, so there is rarely a long wait in line. It is open seven days a week, from 11AM-9PM, so you can add them to the small list of restaurants that are open on Sunday.

Verdict: *A Mr. Foodie Top Twelve Favorite*, VC offers substantial, delicious, unique, reasonably-priced, healthful food, served in a contemporary, comfortable setting. If you haven’t tried it, why not?

LOCAL RESTAURANT NEWS: HALF PRICED DEAL*** Ike’s Love and Sandwiches, a California sub sandwich chain with about 50 different choices of subs, including many vegetarian and vegan ones, is temporarily charging half price for any orders placed between 4-6 pm, EVERY DAY! Yes, it’s located inside the lobby of Fabulous Freddie’s carwash on Bluff (carryout only)), but they make, by far, the best subs in town. Huge and loaded with wildly creative combinations of tasty, fresh ingredients, these sandwiches have won several awards nationally and are absolutely delicious.

Nick the Greek’s first Utah location, has opened at 15 S River Rd., serving gyros, souvlaki, pitas, hummus, baklava, etc. Apollo Burger has closed.

Mahjong

The history of Mahjong began in China during the 1800s. It was first introduced to America in the early 1920s and helped young Chinese Americans connect with both Asian and American cultures. Then, after World War II, young mothers who did not work outside the home learned to play to create opportunities to socialize with their friends. It was also extremely popular with postwar Jewish American women.

There are 40 known variations of mahjong around the world. It is a game of skill, calculation, and a bit of chance, and with today’s health advisors suggesting ‘older’ adults learn to play games that require mental alertness to ward off dementia, Mahjong is a great game to help prevent that from happening.

SunRiver Mahjong is played every Tuesday from 12:30-3pm at the Community Center. We currently have 50 members but there is always room for more.

We are friends, neighbors, and strangers who become competitors and friends. If you are interested, stop by or, if you are interested in joining the club, ask a member. We welcome anyone who would like to join us.

“SPECIAL-TEA” RED HAT Birthday Celebration!

April ushers in many unique occasions such as April Fool’s Day, spring flowers, Easter, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, BUT SunRiver Red Hatters are excited to be presenting “a ‘SPECIAL-TEA’ Birthday Celebration” on Thursday, April 20th. Tickets are on sale for only $10 and close on April 13th.

Afternoon tea seems appropriate to usher in the celebration of both the Red Hat Society and SunRiver Red Hatters’ birthdays. Do not miss our annual event that celebrates years of Red Hats. As the Ballroom doors open, each table will be exquisitely adorned with individual themes that add to the beauty of a spring tea! The doors open at 11:30am; a printed ticket and name badge are required. Once presented and you enter the Ballroom, walk around and admire the beauty of each table. Seating will be open, so just choose a table that you would like to sit at before the seats are taken. The Afternoon Tea venue will begin at noon with tea sandwiches, fruit, a dessert plate and, of course, hot tea!

So come, dressed in your best, lady-like attire and ‘bling,’ to enjoy the frivolity of chit-chat and simplicity of an ‘Afternoon Tea Celebration!’

Looking forward to seeing you, Hugs, Queen Jan Frisbey

Emergency Preparedness Committee

When a member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee asked the fire department about preparing for emergencies, their primary emphasis was on communication. They strongly encourage everyone in SunRiver to sign up for Reverse 911. It is a way the city can quickly contact and inform everyone in a specific area, such as SunRiver, about an emergency. Signing up is easy and free. There is no charge for ongoing services. You can sign up by going to the SunRiverStGeorge.com. Once you log in, select the heading ‘Association,’ scroll down and click on ‘Committees,’ scroll down and near the bottom is ‘Preparedness Committee,’ click there. The second item in the drop-down is ‘Reverse 911’. Clicking it provides a link to register for Reverse 911. You can register your cell phone, your home phone, or both.

The fire department has also suggested that everyone in SunRiver understand and prepare for Sheltering in Place

The idea behind Sheltering in Place is that, rather than leaving your home during an emergency, we hunker down in the comfort of our own home after having made some preparations, including stockpiling food and water, and having resources to care for and protect ourselves. Sheltering in place is just that simple: have a supply of food and water stockpiled in the house and stay home indoors during the emergency.

Imagine a perfect night with the moon shining bright. Family and friends are gathered around the back porch when Grandpa Fred grabs his fiddle and begins the family favorite, “Orange Blossom Special.” Immediately those with instruments join in, laughing as they try to keep up with grandpa. Listeners are soon whoopin’-n-hollerin’ with the music. Just as Orange Blossom screeches to a halt, Cousin Keith issues the “Duelin’ Banjo” challenge. Don, the guitar guru, answers right back, and the music goes wild once again. Next, Uncle Dave slows things down with an old-time waltz, but wait, the words of the tune have the audience rolling with laughter. Cousin Tom, who honed his talents in Vegas, delights the listeners with a rock-and-roll oldy, and Cousin Marty adds a blistering guitar solo. Uncle Mike follows with a Merle Haggard favorite, played on his dobro guitar, while everyone joins in. Then Uncle Pat plays and sings a toe-tapping country medley with banjo and fiddle, adding improvised solos. The music seems to make the moon shine brighter.

If this sounds like a night you might enjoy, the Country-Plus Jam Group tries to recreate this on the first and third Fridays of every month at 6:30-8:30pm in the Community Center’s Multi-Purpose Room. Please consider joining us! Our doors are open to all, both listeners and musicians, who enjoy playing in a country jam format. Musicians: please arrive early to allow time to tune up!

The Happiness Doctor is in

Dr. Louise Jorgensen will share strategies that can turn any place into your happy place. No mind games, just proven processes for increased happiness in today’s world.

SunRiver is fortunate to have someone of Dr. Jorgensen’s caliber living here and willing to present her findings during a successful career in scholarly research, patient consulting, and lecturing – on how humans can best find true and sustainable happiness today.

On Thursday, April 20th, 2023, at 2pm in the Ballroom, Dr. Louise Jorgensen, guest of the Resident Services Committee, will show us ways that we can become happier and stay happier – if we so choose. Throughout her career, she has advanced the cause of human happiness through purposeful recognition of positive actions we can take on our own to enhance our daily living.

Dr. Jorgensen earned her Ph.D. degree in Counseling from Oregon State University and went on to receive post-doctrinal training and certification at the Harvard Medical School’s Positive Psychology Mind-Body Institute.

She has extensive clinical experience and has counseled hundreds of companies, families, and individuals across the U.S. and beyond.

Her expertise reaches into the ‘senior mind,’ something we all can relate to here in SunRiver. Happily, her presentation is interspersed with humor, one of the key elements of a tranquil life.

Plan now to attend this positive, uplifting seminar. You will be happy you did!

Resident Services Committee - Caregiver Group

I’M FINE - NO PROBLEM

How many times have we heard the phrase, “I’m fine, no problem,” or something similar from a person who is caring for a loved one? Yet, they are probably not fine; they may be physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausted. Caregiver Stress is a common condition that comes from providing continuous care for another person, with no relief. Since the primary focus is on their loved one, the caregiver may forget they have a limited amount of physical and emotional energy; when that sort of exhaustion is reached, he or she can easily fall apart. It has been said that the well-being of a person with a serious illness depends directly on the well-being of their caregiver. Therefore, it stands to reason that our fatigue, frustration, fear, anger, etc., can be sensed in some way by our loved one; so, it is crucial that we recognize our own needs honestly and take steps to address them. In some instances, caregivers believe that they can/should be able to manage everything by themselves, which hinders them from reaching out to others. That is when a reality check is called for, and the caregiver will then realize it is practical and wise to allow willing friends, family members, and home health folks to be part of their loved one’s care. Being part of a support group has proven to be very helpful in this journey, so we invite all SunRiver caregivers to consider attending the SunRiver Caregiver Group meetings, which are held every 4th Tuesday of the month at 10:30am in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Community Center. Annual Spring SunRiver Junction Model Railroad Tour

It is warming up in Southern Utah, and the SunRiver Junction Model Railroaders have been working through the winter months on new ideas for their railroads. We are preparing for you to join us on Saturday, April 29th, from noon-4pm to enjoy the trains and see what has changed. Our spring event began 11 years ago with just two railroads. This year we will have ten operating railroads. Our numbers continue to grow, and we are proud to have you join us for a fun afternoon of Model Railroading.

Some of our railroads are indoors and some are outdoors; weather can always be an issue, so stay tuned in case we must make a date change. For a list of railroads, tour times, and a map, please check our web page. We are listed under Clubs & Groups, Hobbies, then Model Railroads, on the SunRiverStGeorge.com website. More information will also be available in the weekly Events Email during April.

We also want to thank all of you who came during the Holiday tour in December.

Hiking Life Lessons

• You cannot just give up in the middle.

• There will always be a voice in your head that says “can’t.” Accept it; then stuff it into a tiny box that you banish to a corner of your brain.

• You are only as strong as your weakest link. You will be a burden to others if you are not prepared.

• A positive attitude will see you through.

• There is no need to rush things.

• The view at the end is beautiful, but in reality, so is the entire journey.

Storytelling & Then Some...

In 1930, my grandfather Frank, a naturalized citizen formerly from Guatemala who spoke with a Spanish accent, posted a personal ad under the heading “Men Seeking Women.” A personal advertisement, sometimes called a lonely-hearts column, is a form of classified advertising in which a person seeks to find another person for friendship, romance, and marriage. Now it was said, back in those days, that men were so desperate to marry, that they never asked a woman her age, all they required was teeth.

Knowing a little about my grandfather, I think he may have written something like this: “A young gentleman, who is hard-working and ambitious with stable employment at Ford Motor Company, and having little contact with the ladies in town, wishes the acquaintance of a fair maiden desiring the holy and happy state of matrimony.”

I don’t know how long the ad ran or which paper or papers he placed the ad in, but it did attract the attention of my grandmother, Mary Belle Burns, a Southern bell from London, Laurel County, Kentucky.

Courtship: A reply was sent, a courtship ensued which lasted until their wedding day on 29 July 1931. By this time, Frank was 33 and Mary was 23.

What did they say during the time of their courtship? I posed this question to my 12-year-old granddaughter, Diane, as we rehearsed the events of their courtship. I imitated my grandfather’s voice along with my grandmother’s southern drawl to highlight the fact that my grandparents were from two diverse cultures and spoke two different languages - but when you look at their photos together, it’s clear they were deeply in love!

Spanish Conversation Group

The Spanish Conversation Group was initiated by Bob and Barb Kieffer in December 2022. The goal of the group is to help those who have studied Spanish in the past to improve their spoken language. Our members have varied backgrounds and experiences. Some of us have traveled or lived in Spanish-speaking countries. Others are renewing rusty skills obtained from courses or other exposure to the language. We encourage each other in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Gatherings enable us to increase our vocabulary, and often we can clarify grammatical usage. At future meetings, we plan to incorporate games and real-life simulations as a part of our format.

The Spanish Conversation Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 10:30am-noon in the Game Room. For more information contact the president, Barb Kieffer, at bjk81236@aol.com.
