April’s showers bring May flowers! With all the rain we have experienced, we should definitely see many beautiful desert flowers this year. Speaking of flowers, do you remember making May Day flower baskets and putting them on your neighbors’ doorsteps? I used to love doing that as a child, but I do not think anyone has kept up this tradition. My mother used to have my sister and I make at least ten baskets each, and we would run all over the neighborhood and give them to people who lived alone. We would ring the doorbell and then hide. It was so exciting to see the joy on a person’s face when they opened the door. It was such a great tradition! Fresh flowers always bring a smile to someone’s face, even if it is a photo of a flower. When you are out on your next hike or jeep trip, consider stopping and taking pictures of the wildflowers and then send them to us at SR-Communications@PMPmanage.com! We love to see what you find while you are out on your adventures. Another traditional May Day event we used to have in school was dancing around the maypole. Do any of you remember doing that?
Dozens of ribbons were fastened to the top of a pole, and each dancer would take a ribbon and move around the pole in a pattern with the rest of the dancers. The goal was to cover the pole in pretty, woven designs. You will still see this with some dance performances and some spring festivals. As we make the turn into the summer heat next month, we will say goodbye to our snowbirds until the fall months. We wish everyone safe travels, and we cannot wait to see you all back in the fall. While you are away, we do encourage you to keep an eye on your association emails and the upcoming event tickets. Many times, for bus trips, we will put tickets on sale early to secure a bus and other required deposits. For those who are leaving for the summer or just traveling for part of it, our Utah Shakespeare Festival tickets and a few other early fall trips will be on sale in the late summer. You do not want to miss out! It is so convenient; you can easily purchase tickets from anywhere in the world, as long as you have the internet! You can log on to the website and purchase your tickets so you never miss any of the fun activities.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the community. On Mother’s Day, we honor mothers, the maternal bond, and the influence of mothers in our society. This holiday is celebrated on many different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in May. Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 14th. We hope that every mother feels honored on this day and hopefully can either be with family or connect with them. For me, becoming a mother was the most rewarding experience of my life; I never knew how much I could love until my sweet boy came into my life. I am also grateful for all the remarkable women in my life who have been inspiring examples! A big thank you to all the mothers in the community; we appreciate you and your big hearts!
Twenty-two million phones will ring on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day became an official holiday on May 9th, 1914.
Greeting cards top the list of Mother’s Day gifts. Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for restaurants. Carnations are the official flower of Mother’s Day. Americans will spend 31 billion dollars on this Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day is the third most attended church service day of the year.
Latin Festival Dinner and Dance
Ryan will be cooking up some exciting, Latin-inspired dinners for the Latin Festival that will consist of Chile Verde, Refried Beans, Spanish Rice, and Rice Pudding. We will also have some amazing entertainers who will start the evening off with some Latin-inspired dances. After dinner, DJ Lex will play some of your favorite songs. Don’t forget to submit your requests on the website under Association News. The DJ wants to play what you want to hear! Don’t worry; knowing the Samba, Cha-Cha-Cha, or Rumba is not required! Our DJ is going to play a mix of sounds you choose! Dinner starts at 5:30pm, the dance performances start at 6pm and the dance party with DJ Lex starts at 6:30pm.
National Burger Day is back! We are excited to hold this Burger Day again this year! You can buy one burger and get a burger half off on Tuesday, May 30th, from 11:30am-2pm at the Poolside Café! Ryan will be doing special burgers on this day, and we want to hear from you about which ones should be added to the menu! This year’s specialty burgers will be Pastrami Burgers, Greek Burgers, and Blue Cheese Burgers! We hope you are hungry, and the best part is you can bring a friend along with you and get their burger for half price! Or you can purchase one for lunch and save the second burger for dinner.
Meet us at the golf course pavilion area for two amazing bands. These two concerts will be the last of our Spring Concert Series, and we plan to go out with a bang with two of our most popular bands. Gather up all your neighbors for a wonderful evening of entertainment, dancing, and food! Gurus has agreed to provide food for both events and will be down near the concert. Watch for emails as we get closer, and we will announce the Guru’s menu for these two evenings. Mark your calendars so you do not miss out, and remember to get your tickets ahead of time! Don’t get a case of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) as you definitely will not want to miss these great events!

Can you remember way back to your high school days and singing with the choir? For most of us, our voices are just a little rusty, and we are not sure if we can hit those high notes anymore. Maybe some of you have been fortunate enough to have sung with adult choirs since then or there might be some who currently are participating in a community choir. Whatever the case, something inside of you is calling to let that voice out and sing again! The SunRiver Community Choir is the one calling for you to join this newly formed mixed choir. You may join this club even if you do not sing; there are many other ways that you can participate. We meet every Wednesday evening from 6-8pm at the Community Center.
The choir began at the beginning of March this year, organized by Jeanette Nielsen, one of our newer Residents. She has quite an extensive background in vocal music as a vocal coach, artistic director for choirs, program facilitator, a music director for community theater, and she has participated in many community choirs throughout her adult life. Wanting to continue to sing after she moved to Saint George, she had the idea to form a choir right here at SunRiver. This choir would not be a formal choir, but one that would sing familiar songs that the Residents would enjoy. Many of our Residents have already joined in the fun of singing and socializing together each week.
The choir will hold two sessions yearly with two concerts. There will be a Spring Session that is currently rehearsing and a Fall Session that will focus on Christmas music. This spring, their concert will be held on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023, at 6pm in the Ballroom. Everyone is invited to come to this free concert titled, “Peace on Earth” with a presentation that includes songs of love, friendship, peace, and harmony. “Let there Be Peace on Earth” will carry the tone joined by other pieces such as: “God Bless the USA,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Shenandoah, “and the “Old Irish Blessing.” If audience participation is your thing, there will even be a few times where you will be invited to join in with a “Do-Re-Mi” of your own.
The Community Choir Club has no dues, but the members donate for the cost of their own music each session. The choir also needs a piano for rehearsals. Our amazing Grand Piano in the Ballroom cannot be moved from room to room throughout the Community Center, so a portable electric piano/keyboard has been purchased for our community to be used by all vocal, instrumental, and theater groups. The piano was purchased at Gentry Music with a generous discount given to us by Garry Gentry. Mr. Gentry has even consented to help with the choir by accompanying and teaching about the piano/ keyboard and its functions. This electric, Casio keyboard has weighted wooden keys and is easily played because it has the touch of a regular piano keyboard. Considering all its additional features, the choir is most excited that it can transpose music. Maybe those high notes will not be so high after all. The May 17th Concert will be free to all, but the SunRiver Community Choir Club is asking for donations to help pay for the new piano/keyboard. We hope to see you all in a few weeks, on May 17th, to share our newly found voices with you.
“All the news that’s fit to eat”
By Andy MarglesQ: Hey, Mr. Foodie, who serves the area’s best Mexican food?
A: Well, if you mean in SW Utah, my favorites are Oscar’s, in Springdale, and Casa Tequilana, in Leeds. If I’m limited to the St. George area, the choice is more difficult. Although there are over thirty local Mexican restaurants here, I find most of them to be similar, both in their offerings and quality. In general, they’re mostly Tex-Mex, serving large portions of that tasty cuisine, for reasonable prices. If forced to pick a favorite of the dozen or so that I have tried, it would be Angelica’s.
Located at 101 E St. George Blvd, 435-628-4399, Angelica’s is open M-Sat, 11-9 and does not take reservations. The eatery’s décor is fast food chain-like with Panera style service. There is a large salsa bar, with about a half- dozen different types of salsa and pickled vegetables. However, there are no free chips and salsa served at Angelica’s. This is common in Mexico, where salsa is used as a condiment and not a pre-dinner snack, but, hey, this is Utah! I have to admit, I was a little disappointed because, well, Mr. Foodie likes free food and eats it whenever he gets a chance.
The first time I dined at Angelica’s, I ordered the chicken torta, a Mexican sandwich and one of the restaurant’s specialties. The manager warned me that their torta was so huge, that anyone who could eat a whole one in under ten minutes, got another one, free! My wife gave me THE LOOK, but I had to find out if I was up to this gastronomic challenge. (Remember, Mr. Foodie really likes free food).
When the torta came, I almost fell off my chair! It looked like they had sliced a loaf of bread in half lengthwise, loaded it with chicken, onions, peppers, avocados, tomatoes and cheese and then sliced it in half, widthwise. I opened up one of the halves, slathered it with medium hot salsa and dug in. YUM! The well- seasoned chicken and veggies combined with the tangy salsa were a fiesta in my mouth! Juices and salsa were pouring out of the sandwich and dripping down my chin, onto the plate.
I was trying to eat something almost as big as my head and losing the battle. After consuming only, the first half of this delectable monstrosity, I was completely stuffed. I had failed miserably in my quest for the free torta. There were no waiters clapping, no music playing, no cheering from my adoring fellow diners…. The good news? LEFTOVERS!
Note: Sadly, the torta challenge is no more and certainly not because of Mr. Foodie’s feeble attempt. However, if any reader can actually eat one in under ten minutes, send me the video. I’ll “honor” you, in the next review and send you a bucket of Tums!
Verdict: Viva Angelica’s! In a close race, with a large field of fairly similar eateries, Angelica’s wins by a nose as Mr. Foodie’s favorite Mexican restaurant in St. George.
RESTAURANT NEWS: KAIRO’S, located at 14 W Tabernacle St., SG 84770, 435-992-0764, is now open. Hours are M-Sat, 11-7. It’s owned by the folks at Farmstead Bakery, located just down the street. The limited cuisine offered here is “healthy Mediterranean”. The menu features mostly bowls with grains, fries or greens as a base, plus a protein and your choice of several mix-ins and dressings. Service is Chipotle style. Kairo’s offerings were a bit too healthy for Mr. Foodie, but you clean eaters out there may love it, so maybe give it a try when you’re in the neighborhood.
In the 1920s, the poolroom was an environment in which men gathered to loiter, smoke, fight, bet, and play. The rooms of today bear no resemblance to those of earlier times. Until very recently, billiards was completely dominated by men. The atmosphere of the poolroom was very forbidding, and women had trouble being accepted there. Nonetheless, women have been enthusiastic players since the game was brought up from the ground in the 15th century. For over two hundred years, women of fashion have played the game. In the past, it was very difficult for a woman to develop billiard skills because male players, family, and friends usually did not support a woman’s efforts, and it was not easy to find experienced female instructors or coaches. As these situations have changed and continue to change, we can expect women to equal men in ability and take the game to new heights.
Two electrifying events, one in 1961 and the other in 1986, moved billiards into the mainstream. The first was the release of the movie, “The Hustler.” The black-and-white film depicted the dark life of a pool hustler with Paul Newman in the title role. New rooms opened all over the country, and for the remainder of the sixties, pool flourished until social concerns, the Vietnam War, and a desire for outdoor coeducational activities led to a decline in billiard interest. In 1986, “The Color of Money,” the sequel to “The Hustler,” with Paul Newman in the same role and Tom Cruise as an up-and-coming professional, brought the excitement of pool to a new level and again, the game increased in popularity. Today the game continues to grow and welcomes players of all ages and backgrounds.
The SunRiver Billiards Club is made up of around sixty members. Both men and women belong to the club and play in ongoing 8-Ball seasons that last about eight weeks, with members competing in four groups arranged by skill level, with a playoff at the end of the season. Periodic 9-Ball tournaments are also held throughout the year; these are one-day affairs and can be either singles or doubles. The club welcomes players of all skill levels. More information can be found on the Billiards Club website at SunRiverStGeorge.com > Lifestyle > Clubs and Groups > Billiards.
Here it is, May already. We are sharing the disappointment of looking out the windows and seeing piles of dirt instead of a busy Outdoor Pool. But things are moving forward under the newly hired project manager, and everything is being done to complete the new pool for a fast-track opening. The recently released summer fitness class schedule was designed by Weston Welch and his staff to create exercise options for everyone, but with special attention to water exercise options to compensate for the continued closure of the Outdoor Pool. Whether you have an interest in lap swimming, water fitness classes, or individual workouts, there is plenty of opportunity for you in our great indoor pool. Weston and his great staff of fitness instructors are available to introduce you to all levels of difficulty/interest through participation in their water fitness classes.
Our March article described alternate pool options at other properties in the St. George area. You may also want to consider these as an alternative to the Outdoor Pool while awaiting its completion.
Tip for beginners: The ubiquitous foam noodle is an especially effective water exercise tool. Because it is buoyant, you have to engage multiple muscle groups to counter its floatation, leading to burning calories and firming your muscles. The seated bicycle swim, kicking only, arms only, and synchronized swimmer are four of the more popular noodle water workouts which you can learn from an instructor or research online!
Weston has a noodle ready for you in your length and favorite color!

“Celebrate Mom with ‘The Gift I’ll Give’ by Shawna Edwards
Tennis has always been a game played politely. Starting with the royals and gentry of England and France, tennis is steeped in a history of manners and etiquette. “Politesse,” coupled with the knowledge of the rules of tennis, will keep players calling you back for another game. The following is an opportunity to assess your knowledge of some unusual rules and important etiquette:
1. Can your shot be good if the ball touches part of your body?
a. No.
b. Yes, if it touches your finger(s).
c. Yes, if it touches any part of your hand.
2. When spinning a racquet or flipping a coin at the beginning of a match, how many choices has the winner of the spin?
a. Two: the choice to serve or receive first and the choice of preference as to which side to start the match.
b. Three: the choice to serve or receive first, choice of preferred sides to begin the match, and the choice to defer to the opponent to choose from the choices above.
3. Do you win a point if you hit a ball that goes around the net post, not over the net, and lands fair on the opponent’s side?
a. Yes.
b. Yes, if the ball is hit at least as high as the net’s height.
c. No.
4. May you reach over the net to hit a ball if you do not touch the net with your body or clothing?
a. No.
b. Yes.
c. Yes, but only if the ball has gone over the net to your side first.
5. In doubles, what happens if the served ball touches the net and then, before the bounce, hits the receiver’s partner who is standing outside the proper service court?
a. The serving side wins the point.
b. The receiving side wins the point.
c. It is a “let,” so the server repeats the serve.
6. In doubles, during a point, when may a player say something to his or her partner?
a. Never.
b. Only after the opponent hits a ball.
c. Anytime.
7. If there is uncertainty about a ball landing fair or out, may either side make the call?
a. No, only the side receiving the ball.
b. Yes.
c. Whoever had the best view.
8. Under what circumstances is the server allowed to repeat a faulted first serve (there may or may not be more than one correct answer)?
a. A ball from another court enters your court between serves.
b. The receiver needs to retie a shoe between serves.
c. A bird nearby starts squawking between serves.
d. The receiver calls “out” and hits the faulted first serve softly into the net, but because it rolls back from the net, needs to clear the ball before the second serve.
e. The server needs to retie a shoe between serves.
Answers:
(server is entitled to no delay between serves and receiver must play at server’s pace)
The Tennis Club invites you to experience our “etiquette!” At the Sports Pavilion’s information board near the courts, please check out our monthly socials and drop-in tennis on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Now that May is here, wildflower enthusiasts can still view bear claw poppies in full bloom for a few more weeks. Striking clumps of white flowers with yellow centers may be seen until mid-May along the Bear Claw Poppy Trail and other locations near St. George.
The bear claw poppy, also known by other names, such as the dwarf bear poppy and the Coville bear-claw poppy, is endemic to Washington County, meaning the species is found only there and nowhere else on earth. Its scientific name is Arctomecon Humilis Coville. Listed as an endangered species, bear claw poppies grow only in areas where the soil is high in gypsum. They get their “bear claw” name from the shape of their leaves, and they typically bloom only for a couple of months each spring. Due to the specific environmental conditions where they are found, including soil composition, temperature, and rainfall, Bear Claw Poppies cannot be grown outside their natural, wild habitat. If you tried to grow one from a seed, it would not germinate. They also cannot be dug up and transplanted due to their long taproots. The only place to enjoy them is in the wild.
Enjoy them. Be careful about destroying the crust, the soil around them. Feel free to take pictures of them. Please do not pick them. They are pretty, but they do not make good, picked flowers, so they are not going to be a nice addition to a bouquet. So, do not pick them, not just because they are endangered, but because it is not worth it.

Dancin’ to the Oldies is a hugely popular event, with tickets selling out within weeks after becoming available! If you are among those who have not yet been able to come to one of our dances, your opportunity may be coming. During the summer months, many SunRiver Residents travel to other places, but our dances continue on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Kevin Auernig, “The One-Man Band,” plays tunes that we all know and love. So, whether you grab a partner and dance or just come to listen, it is a night of fun!
In 2007, when Dancin’ to the Oldies began, we played music mostly for couples dancing. In recent years we have expanded, and now line dancers and freestyle groups, and others have joined in. We have recently been joined by a new SunRiver group, “Couples’ Dance.” Quoting from their website: “Couples’ Dance Group is open to all SunRiver couples who love to dance and want to have fun learning some of the great partner dances. Couples’ Dance Classes are taught on the 2nd and 3rd Mondays of the month. Practice sessions are held on the 1st, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month. You will need a partner!” These sessions are all held in the Community Center in the Fitness Room. Check their website for information on the instructors and what dance style will be taught.
They also host a fun opportunity for all Residents and friends: a Couples’ Monthly Dance Social on the 4th Thursday. This is an informal dance event held in the Ballroom. There is no DJ, but they play a wide variety of music from 6-7:30 pm. There is no cost, and neither a ticket nor rsvp is required. You are free to bring friends, just sign them in at the front desk and punch your guest card. Come anytime; you just need to bring your partner.
So, check their webpage for all the details and sign up to receive Couples’ Dance Group emails. To do so, select Dance - Couples under Performing Arts on the Club & Group webpage, and be sure to click SAVE at the bottom of the page.
See you at Dancin’ to the Oldies on May 23rd, the 4th Tuesday of the month, on the Ballroom dance floor from 6:30-9pm.
If you have comments or questions, email us at dancin.2.the.oldies@sunrivertoday.com or talk to one of us at the dances.
